AN POST in Ireland have released a special set of stamps celebrating the long and successful career of Irish band U2. The four stamps depict different eras of the band’s 34 year career told through four of U2’s most memorable albums: The Joshua Tree’ (1987), ‘Achtung Baby’ (1991), ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ (2000), and ‘Songs of Experience’ (2017). Each booklet contains four stamps, two which can be used to send post nationwide, and two for international postage. The stamps and souvenir sheets include a photograph U2 performing in Dublin’s Dandelion Market when the band was just beginning to take off.

Oman Post has launched a new postage stamp featuring horse and camel taming, recently given cultural heritage recognition by UNESCO. Oman Post said: “Under the patronage of the Royal Court Affairs, we are launching a new postage stamp on the Ardhah of horses and camels on the occasion of their inclusion in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in UNESCO. The stamps support 3D augmented reality technology.” Horse and camel Ardhah (taming) is practised across many regions of Oman. Canada Post sees the light

Reported at https://www.similkameenspotlight.com Canada Post has produced a new commemorative stamp to mark Diwali, a festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and others around the world. This year Diwali falls on Saturday, Nov. 14, with festivities continuing for five days. Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, usually falls in either October or November, based on the Hindu lunar calendar. It celebrates victory of good over evil, light over darkness. Canada Post’s new Diwali stamp features a diya and a geometric background evocative of a traditional rangoli. The domestic-rate stamp is available in a booklet of 10 stamps. Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word dipavali, meaning rows of lights. Diyas – small shallow receptacles made of clay that hold purified butter – are lit to ward off evil and to

usher in goodness with light. Rangoli is an art form in which patterns are created on the ground using coloured rice, sand, quartz powder or flower petals. Followers of each religion go to their respective place of worship to pray and light the diyas on this holy night. This year some Diwali celebrations will shift to the digital world. Among them is the annual 5X Festival, which aims to replace in-person parties and events with virtual performances and other ways of engaging an audience during the pandemic.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Charles Dickens, the Isle of Man Post Office in association with the Charles Dickens Museum in London has produced a set of six stamps featuring five of John Leech’s illustrations for A Christmas Carol. The highest value stamp is decorated with the ‘lost portrait’ of Charles Dickens made when he was 31, lost for more than a century and bought by the museum last year for £180,000.

“This has been a wonderful collaboration to mark the 150th anniversary and to highlight the museum and its extraordinary collection,” said the director of the Charles Dickens Museum. “Considering that Margaret Gillies’ portrait of Dickens was lost for over 130 years, it’s quite something to see it presented so beautifully on a stamp.”

Reported at https://www.arabnews.com/ node/1748801/media The Lebanese are trying to put the devastating Beirut blast behind them as they slowly rebuild their city, a little more than two months since the tragedy occurred. But the country’s post office has captured the dramatic explosion in a limited edition stamp costing LBP10,000 ($6.63) with the proceedings going to the Lebanese Civil Defence, angering some people at the decision to launch the stamp when investigations have been delayed and few questions have been answered. Twitter responses include: “Someone needs to get fired over this tasteless LibanPost Beirut Blast stamp.” “The view from our balcony. The explosion, as well as leveling half the city, prompted the resignation of Prime Minister Hassan Diab and his government.

Drug policy reform advocates disagree. “We are facing an overdose epidemic made increasingly deadly due to the pandemic, but the DEA is selling stamps.” But Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said USPS hopes “that the Drug Free USA stamp will help publicize the dangers of illicit drug use and to promote drug abuse prevention.” The current Miss America 2020 is also involved in the anti-drug postal promotion. In the DEA announcement, she said, “I have dedicated my year as Miss America 2020 to keeping patients safe with medications and fighting prescription drug misuse, so I am thrilled to see this issue nationally recognized through the drug-free stamp.” For those with mailing needs who aren’t interested in supporting the notion of a “Drug Free USA,” USPS does have another stamp that recognizes the 50-year anniversary of the drug-fueled 1969 counterculture music festival, Woodstock.

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for December 2020. This month’s column includes new issues from Australia Post, literature on Queensland postal stationery and an updated list of the views on the 1910 Queensland view cards. The Queensland 1910 View Cards The Queensland 1910 View Postcards (Figures 1 and 2) remain something of an enigma. Issued by Queensland in 1910 as a ‘modern’ replacement to the 1897 postcards with small views on the front, the 1910 postcards have black and white views on the reverse. They were printed by the Queensland Government printer using views from the library of photographs used for the Queensland Intelligence and Tourist Bureau (QITB) postcards. Unlike many other postal stationery view postcards of this period, the number of views which appeared on the reverse of these cards has never been established. Postal Stationery 38. View from Cairns Range, Barron River in Foreground In addition, there are two colour views with no captions which are assumed to be proofs: Neurum Creek (as number 35 but reversed) and Rockhampton Customs House. Some views are also known on buff (rather than the issued white) paper and are also thought to be proofs. If you know of any additional views, I would love to hear from you (please send scans of both the front and reverse of the card). Literature on Queensland Postal Stationery This listing of literature on Queensland Postal Stationery seeks to assist collectors of Queensland postal stationery until an up-to-date and comprehensive catalogue or handbook becomes available. It is not meant to be a comprehensive bibliography. Catalogues: Higgins and Gage’s Queensland listings remain the most recent catalogue listing of Queensland and despite its simplified nature, its omissions and its flaws it remains in use by both dealers and collectors. The lettercard listing in particular is seriously flawed and collectors should use the listing in Bill Walton’s articles (see below). The most recent edition was the AUSIPEX 84 edition in 1984. Earlier catalogue listings can be found in the Robson Lowe and Asher Catalogues: The Encyclopaedia of British Empire Postage Stamps. Robson Lowe Vol. 4, The Empire in Australasia, 1962 and Grosser Ganzsachen-Katalog Siegfried Ascher. Monographs: Queensland Postal Stationery Phil Collas 1979 is a very good account of Queensland postal stationery which is still ‘a must read’ today. Unfortunately, it has no illustrations at all making it difficult to use but the information it contains makes it worth the effort. The Postal Stationery of Queensland Alan Griffiths published by British Society of Australian Philately 2018 is based on Alan Griffiths’s collection which had a wide range of proofs and essays as well as many rare items and sold at Abacus Auctions No 240 1 March 2020 https://www.abacusauctions. com.au/Auction/240. Postcard articles include: • 1909 1d postcard with four line-heading including ‘The address only to be written on this side: A number of mint and used copies of this postcard (Figure 3) are known. See Queensland 1910 Postal Cards Bernie Beston Postal Stationery Collector (PSC) August 2000 pp 39-43. • 1910 view cards: The current list of the known views is given above. Cinderella Corner Christmas Labels Welcome to the final Cinderella Corner for 2020. To coincide with the festive season, this issue will focus on the rich landscape of Australian Christmas labels; the article is more visual than text-laden so that a wider variety of these labels can be appreciated. Next year’s December piece will continue the narrative and explore more of these wonderful Christmas items. Promoting Shopping And Christmas Figure 1 illustrates a Myer Emporium PTPO (Printed to Private Order) 3½d envelope, postmarked Melbourne 6 November 1958. Its reverse is illustrated in Figure 2, which presents a cinderella encouraging customers to shop during the Christmas period. Coloured greenblue and white, the label is imperforate, measures 77mm x 43mm, and alongside a Christmas tree features the text: For your comfort & convenience / SHOP AND POST EARLY THIS CHRISTMAS A similar label, affixed to the reverse of a Myer Emporium PTPO 3d cover postmarked Melbourne 5 November 1951, is illustrated in Figure 3. Measuring 46mm x 61mm and coloured red and cream, the imperforate cinderella features the near identical text featured in the label shown in Figure 2: For Your Better Comfort & Convenience SHOP AND POST EARLY THIS CHRISTMAS These labels are believed to have related to the rather elusive Myer Philatelic Department in Melbourne, and further information can be found in the February 2018 Cinderella Corner. Posting And Christmas A range of non-official Australia Post labels were also issued to encourage Australians to post their Christmas presents earlier, thereby ensuring timely arrival of gifts. Most of these date from the 1940s to the early 1960s. The label illustrated in Figure 4 is affixed to the reverse of a Myer Melbourne PTPO 1½d cover postmarked 11 November 1947. Imperforate and measuring 44mm x 43mm, the label features the text: POST Your Christmas Mail Figures 1 - 4 28 - Stamp News

NOW. The label also exists in black and pale yellow, as illustrated in Figure 5. Figure 6 illustrates a colourful block of six labels, each perforated 11 and measuring approximately 33mm x 47mm. The text on each cinderella echoes a message of similar sentiment to that on Figure 5, namely: SHOP AND POST EARLY… for CHRISTMAS. The Top L-R Figures 5, 6 & 9 Above Figure 8 Below L-R Figures 7, 10 & 11

label is also illustrated affixed to the front of a 9 November 1956 postmarked PTPO envelope of Price Waterhouse & Co. Sydney (Figure 7). Similar labels were also issued in 1957 (see the block of 8 illustrated in Figure 8) and again in 1958 (see the block of 10 illustrated in Figure 9). Similar examples are shown throughout Figures 10 to 13. Any help about the dates for these latter labels is greatly appreciated. A slight variant on the promotion of posting gifts early is illustrated in Figure 14. This cinderella, measuring approximately 37mm x 36mm and rouletted 7 on all four sides, was released in late 1954 to promote the early sending of Christmas telegrams. The green, red and white label features the text: LODGE OVERSEAS GREETINGS TELEGRAMS EARLY. Further information on the Shop and the vari-

Australia Post And Christmas Several different labels have been produced by Australia Post to help with the promotion of Christmas and associated Australia Post services. The two strips of Merry Christmas labels illustrated together in Figure 15 are multicoloured and feature four vertical stickers. The strip to the right measures 71mm x 161mm and was likely released in 1984. The sheet to the left is slightly narrower, measuring 64mm x 162mm, and was released in October 1985. Both self-adhesive and imperforate sheets were printed for Australia Post by S. R. Frankland Pty. Ltd. of Prahran, Victoria, for use with the Christmas ‘Postpak’ range 30 - Stamp News

of products. The third label on the 1985 confirms this, with its margin inscription: POSTPAK CHRISTMAS STICKERS MS921 (OCT 85). Modern Christmas Greetings With the wonderful assistance of Noel Almeida, many more modern Christmas greetings cinderellas have been identified, all produced in Australia over the last 30 years. These are illustrated across Figures 16 to 34, and the 18 labels. Some of the messages heralded on these items include: We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year / NOEL NOEL; CHRISTMAS GREETINGS / Wishing you the very best for Christmas and the New Year; SEASONS GREETINGS / Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year; Glad Tidings / Extending

warm greetings on this Season of Goodwill; JOY; NORTH POLE / Christmas Town 12.25 Some of these labels were printed by Australian Label Company in Clayton Vic and sold through stationers. Others were produced by Australian Credit Stationers, an idea considered from as early as 1976. These self-adhesive labels were printed in sheetlets and in rolls. Noel Almeida also adds that firms used to send out a monthly statement of account in the post, and that many November and December statements went out with these stickers attached. It was also a reminder to pay on time, with settlement normally monthly using the statement. Conclusions The world of Australian Christmas cinderellas is vast and bountiful; those illustrated in this Cinderella Corner form only a snapshot of this extensive landscape. It is anticipated that next December’s Cinderella Corner will explore more of these wonderful labels, with a closer focus on religious-themed ones. Feedback, as usual, is welcomed. Stamp News - 31

Gilbert & Ellice Islands 1912/24 £1 KGV absolutely *SUPERB* MVLH: The rarest KGV high value from the entire Pacific from this tiny island. Incredible condition

ex Germany - lightest hinge touch, fresh and vivid and bright and unfaded, free of gook and gunk, and “unrubbed”, with DEEP vibrant printer-yesterday colour. These stamps fade and “rub” badly if handled carelessly, and after a century, most have been! SG 24, cat £550=$A1,100. Totally without fault or blemish of any kind. A stamp for the discerning collector, who accepts ONLY the finest quality material, yet priced at half Gibbons as bought very favorably! Only $US375 as I type. $A550 (Stock 519JR)

Davo album Netherlands 1852-1980, Cat $A3,500 for $A500!: Davo album of Netherlands 1852 to 1980 mainly used, Michel value €2,062=$A3,500. Juicy lot from an Estate. Owner has a page of imperfs from 1852, and then a decent spread to 1980. Many better pieces and sets, and Michel cat noted next to each in pencil for your easy checking. All in the very cool blue cloth covered Dutch DAVO album, with brass peg fittings and country Coat Of Arms in lavish embossed colours etc - cost $100s when new. A great nucleus to complete, and a lot of the hard work is already done. Condition a bit mixed as always on 130 year span collections, but many better pieces and sets in nice shape. Near all used. Bought well, so out it goes at just 15% of Michel cat! For a US buyer around $US350. Only a few pix here - tinyurl. com/DavoNeth a LOT of pages are in this book. $A500 (Stock 567PD)

Territory Of New Guinea, 1935 Bulolo Airmail, £5 Green Top Value, *Superb Used*: One of the most iconic Airmail stamps from the entire World in the 1930s. Incredibly high value - the largest denomination

Australia ever had was a £2, and even those are scarce and expensive - the CHEAPEST watermark being $5,000 mint. This was literally over a month’s gross wages for anyone who had a job in The Great Depression. Clean, perfectly centered, fresh VFU, with deep rich original colour. Clean and flat and fresh. Free of all hinges, gook and gunk and aging etc, after 85 years. And free of the THINS and tears and bad creases that these coarse blotting paper stamps mostly get, after usage on the very heavy shipments of Gold Bullion that these were used for. Superb light cds of “BULOLO - 31 MAY : 40 - New Guinea”. Most of these have WAU cancels which was just a few miles from Bulolo in the NG Highlands, which was the site of a huge Gold Rush in the 1930s, so this cancel is highly sought. Perfect centered, and better than usual perfs for these as you can see, that were lumpy single line perf, printed on coarse blotting paper. Way under-rated by SG 205, £450=$A900. Should be TREBLE this used, which are FIVE times scarcer than mint of course, despite the silly cat for mint, as HEAPS of mint sheets were stolen from PO, and sold off cheaply well under face to dealers at the time – see here tinyurl.com/ Bulolo - Police were even called in. I handle just one of these genuinely used, each few years. However, I handle 100s of used £2 Roos a year! Impossible to improve on quality - $A550 (Stock 382JK) Order via: tinyurl.com/GlenOrder All Cards accepted with ZERO fee - even Amex! Bank Deposit fine, or Money Orders. PayPal is accepted in ANY major currency, saving you fees - contact me first. LayBys/Layaways always OK with me!

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation AusVipex 2020 AusVipex 2020 is the Australian virtual one-frame exhibition organized by the Australian Philatelic Federation. The exhibits and the results are still available for viewing on the website: ausvipex2020.com.au. Most philatelic classes are represented including Traditional, Postal History, Postal Stationery, Open, Revenues and the newest FIP class of Postcards. There are also exhibits from Australian experimental classes such as First Day Covers and Topical. This is a great opportunity to see these exhibits without having to travel to the exhibition. Christmas Feasts Christmas is celebrated in many ways all over the world, so it’s no surprise that the philately for the holiday includes thousands of stamps and covers. The Christmas theme is among the world’s most popular topical areas to collect. Many nations have issued commemorative stamps for Christmas that usually go on sale sometime between early October and early December. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without lots of delicious food. The traditional Christmas dinner can take place any time from Christmas Eve to the evening of Christmas Day itself. The food is often particularly rich and substantial and eaten in large celebrations with family and friends. The actual dinner varies in different parts of the world with regional cuisines and local traditions. In many parts of the world, particularly former British colonies, the

Figure 1: Christmas Island, 2019 Christmas Feast meal shares some connection with the English Christmas dinner involving roasted meats and a pudding of some description. In countries, without a Christian tradition, the Christmas meal may be more heavily influenced by popular culture. There are tales behind some of the most popular Christmas foods. Christmas Food Traditions Around the World Australia As you stuff the turkey, cook the ham, boil the plum pudding or snack on mince pies this Christmas, you might be wondering why we stick with these traditions in Australia in the middle of summer. The Christmas Island miniature sheet in figure 1 shows us celebrating with many festive foods are steeped in ancient northern hemisphere practices where the weather is much colder at Christmas. Figure 4: U.K., 2010 plum pudding chopped beef or lamb, onions, vegetables, dried fruit, breadcrumbs, and wine. During the 16th century, the meat and vegetables started to disappear, and it became a pudding. This rich dish was served on feast days and has been a Christmas regular since the 1670s. In the Yule festival, the pudding was set alight to symbolise the rebirth of the Sun and topped with a piece of holly to represent everlasting life

Great Britain Christmas dinner in the United Kingdom is usually eaten on 25 December. The traditional meal consists of turkey, pheasant, duck or goose, served with stuffing, gravy, Yorkshire puddings, cranberry sauce and vegetables, particularly Brussels sprouts. A Christmas cracker (see figure 2) is placed next to each plate at the dinner table. When the crackers are pulled, a coloured paper crown, a small toy and a joke fall out. Turkey hasn’t always had pride of place at the festive table. Before explorer Sebastian Cabot introduced turkey to England in the 16th century, the rich feasted on peacock or swan, while boar’s head was the main course for everyone else. But once it arrived, turkey quickly became the most popular Christmas meat in Britain and it is even immortalised in Charles Dickens’s 1843 classic tale A Christmas Carol, in which Scrooge’s first act of generosity is to buy a Christmas turkey for the family of his badly treated employee Bob Cratchit (see figure 3). The dessert is plum pudding (see figure 4), mince pies or trifle, with brandy butter or cream. Today’s mince pies are a lot more appealing than those of medieval times where the parcels contained meat or liver mixed with hard-boiled egg and ginger. Over time the filling was improved. By the 1800s the mince had become a mixture of dried fruits, chopped nuts, spices, lemon juice with brandy. It’s said that if you eat a mince pie in a different house on each of the 12 days of Christmas you’re guaranteed to have a Stamp News - 51

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation happy year, as each mince pie will bring you a happy month. New Zealand New Zealand Christmas is like Britain and Australia. They share traditions, like turkey, mince pies and Christmas pudding and they often serve a ham (see figure 5). Whether it’s glazed and baked or eaten cold off the bone, ham finds its way into most Christmas celebrations (including sandwiches for days afterwards!). Pork has featured in festivities since ancient times. The Romans ate boar during the Saturnalia festival in honour of the god Adonis, who was slain by a boar and whose birthday is celebrated on December 25. Due to New Zealanders celebrating Christmas in the summer, it is also common to barbecue, and eat seasonal vegetables and fruit such as cherries and strawberries. One popular dish is pavlova topped with pomegranate seeds and Chantilly cream (see figure 6). France In France and many other French-speaking countries, a Réveillon is a long dinner, and possibly party, held on the evenings preceding Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. The name of this dinner is based on the word réveil (meaning “waking”), because participation involves staying awake until midnight. Dishes might include roast turkey with chestnuts, roast

Christkindelsmarik, the oldest Christmas market in France, is a joyful celebration in Strasbourg that has started four to five centuries ago (see figure 7). The market is a long-standing tradition of the representation of the “Child Jesus.” With more than 300 stalls, parades, an ice rink and much more, Christkindelsmarik proves to be a large and festive celebration with many different dishes from various stalls. Millions of people come to visit and celebrate the festivities and food involved at this Christmas festival. Italy Traditional Christmas feasts in Italy vary depending on the region. The Feast of the Seven Fishes, a famous Christmas Eve feast called la Vigilia, is a tradition that came from Southern Italy. It consists of seven seafood dishes, symbolic of the number seven, which is the most repeated number in the bible. Some popular dishes are baccala (salt cod), baked cod, fried calamari, fried shrimp, linguine with lobster sauce, octopus salad and shrimp cocktail. In

Scandinavia Christmas celebrations involve a long evening feasting on a buffet of traditional foods on Christmas eve. In Finland, they call it Joulupöytä and in Norway, Julaften Classic fish dishes like gravadlax salmon (see figure 9), herring prepared a thousand ways and lutefisk are served on thick slices of rye bread. The main dish is usually a large Christmas ham and casseroles with potatoes, rutabaga (swedes), or carrots. The dessert Ris á la mande is a cold rice pudding with whipped cream, vanilla, almonds, and a hot cherry sauce. There is a peeled almond hidden in the dessert bowl, and whoever finds it gets a present. There is plenty to satisfy Scandinavia’s collective sweet tooth as Christmas approaches, with candy canes (see figure 10) and chocolate. The traditional beverage is mulled wine. Candy canes were originally white and straight, but a popular story states that in 1670, the choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral in Germany bent them into canes to represent a shepherd’s staff and gave them to his bored, young singers to keep them quiet during Christmas mass. Eastern Europe You won’t see any ham or turkey on the Christmas table in Poland, as it’s a meat-free day. The dinner, called Wiglia, begins when the first star appears in the sky. Nothing can be eaten until all the members of the family have broken the Christmas wafers together and exchanged wishes for good health and prosperity. Traditionally, 12 dishes are served for dinner, which represents the 12 apostles. These include the very popular red borscht with tiny dumplings, mushroom soup, carp, herring, pierogi, braised sauerkraut, cabbage rolls, kutia (wheat berry pudding), gingerbread, poppyseed cake, and dried fruit. In the Czech Republic, Štědrý den translates to “Generous Day,” probably for the wealth of food that has traditionally been served for Christmas dinner. Fish soup is the first course. The main dish is usually fried carp with potato salad. Vánočka is a Czech sweet bread that is braided and made with raisins and almonds, served for breakfast. USA In America, both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner is traditionally turkey or ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. Cookies of many kinds are also used to celebrate Christmas in America. They can be gingerbread, snickerdoodles, or sugar cookies baked throughout December and fashioned into many shapes and figures. Gingerbread is used to make edible Christmas tree ornaments or gingerbread houses (see figure 12). Gingerbread has been popular in Europe since the essential ingredients (spices, sugars, almonds and citrus fruits) were brought back from the Middle East in the 11th century. It has since evolved in different ways. In some countries, gingerbread is a moist and spicy-sweet cake, while others enjoy it as moulded biscuits. Gingerbread men were first made by Catholic monks for saints’ days and festivals. Large, fancy carved “cookie boards” pushed a pattern into the dough, creating biscuits which showed celebrated saints and religious motifs. 54 - Stamp News

Canada In English-speaking Canada, much of Christmas dinner is like that of Britain with turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and vegetables. For dessert, pumpkin or apple pie, raisin pudding, Christmas pudding, or fruitcake are the staple. Like Christmas pudding the fruitcake started as plum porridge, then in the 16th century, it became popular to add butter, replace the oatmeal with wheat flour and add eggs to hold it together, making a plum cake that was eaten to celebrate the Twelfth Night. In England, Stir-up Sunday (five weeks before Christmas) is considered the final day that fruitcakes and puddings can be made so they have time to age. According to tradition, all family members must take a turn at stirring the mixture, which must be done in a clockwise direction with eyes shut while making a wish. In French-speaking Canada, traditions may be more like those of France and hold a Réveillon. Eggnog, a milk-based punch that is often infused with alcohol, is also popular around the holiday season. Other Christmas items include Christmas cookies, butter tarts, and shortbread, which are traditionally baked before the holidays (see figure 13). South America A traditional Christmas dinner in Curacao includes large quantities of culinary delights such as Christmas ham, salted, dried salmon pickled in vinegar and onions, Christmas cake, Quesillo (flan), and Ponche Crema (locally made eggnog) (see figure 14). Tamales are a very important traditional Costa Rican and Honduras Christmas. Tamales (see figure 15) are eaten year-round now, but traditionally, they were only made for Christmas. The ingredients can vary depending on each family’s preferred recipe, but they’re usually made with a mix of ground corn, pork, carrots, rice, sweet pepper, and achiote, then wrapped in a plantain leaf and cooked. Other dishes include

Like many other countries in South America, roast suckling pig is a big part of Christmas dinner in Peru. The meal also includes things like applesauce, tamales, potato purée, and a rice dish. A popular sweet dish is panetón that pairs especially well with another Peruvian Christmas tradition, spiced hot chocolate, made with cloves and cinnamon. In Mexico, it’s a tradition to eat dinner late at night with family on Christmas Eve. The meal includes typical dishes like tamales, bacalao (dried salt cod), pozole (a soup made of pork or chicken with garlic and chilli), and buñuelos, fried dough with sugar. But on January 6th, they celebrate El Dia de los Reyes, which is considered the height of the Christmas season. This means the day of The Three Kings, and on that day, families eat a special cake called Three Kings cake or Twelfth Night cake. There is a figure of the Baby Jesus hidden inside, and whoever finds it becomes the “godparent” of Jesus for that year. Philippines Christmas dinner in the Philippines is called Noche Buena following Hispanic custom and is held towards midnight of 24 December. This usually comes after the entire family has attended the late evening Mass called the Misa de Gallo (“Mass of the Rooster”). The centrepiece of the Noche Buena is often the hamón which is usually a cured leg of pork. This is usually served with queso de bola, literally a ball of Edam cheese covered in red wax. Other ubiquitous dishes are pasta and for dessert, fruit salad. The

dinner would usually be accompanied with tsokolate or hot cocoa, which is made with pure, locally grown cacao beans. The Christmas stamp in figure 16 was designed by the PHLPost’s in-house graphic designer Rodine Teodoro. It shows the variety of sumptuous dishes that are served during this famous Filipino Christmas dinner like pancit, hamon, queso de bola, puto bumbong, bibingka, fruit salad, suman, and many more. Japan It’s traditional in Japan to eat Christmas foods such as seafood, rice and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Yes, you read that right - KFC. Every Christmas season about 3.6 million Japanese families treat themselves to fried chicken from the American fast-food chain, in what has become a nationwide tradition. Getting the KFC special Christmas dinner often requires ordering it weeks in advance or you will wait in line at the shop for hours. Takeshi Okawara, the manager of the first KFC in the country, dreamt up the idea for a “party barrel” to be sold at Christmas in 1970. It was an instant hit. In 1974, KFC took the marketing plan nationwide, calling it Kurisumasu ni wa Kentakkii, or Kentucky for Christmas. Stamp News - 55

Market Matters New finds always possible!

As I have typed 100 times over 40+ years, “The Last word In Philately Is NEVER Written”. New and exciting things turn up all the time. Often very important discoveries. Some are very immediately obvious, like a sideways watermark on stamps not recorded with them before etc. A good example of that was the 1914 1d Red KGV head stamp from Australia - a century after it was issued, one turned up in a junk collection - from Scotland as I recall, with watermark sideways. Hard to believe that such a find could be uncovered more than a century after first being issued, but it did. The 1d Red KGV is generally regarded as the most studied stamp issue on earth. About 100 different shades of ”Red” are listed and priced in the ACSC specialised catalogue, and This is a £50,000 stamp!

there are also various different Dies and different WWI emergency papers it was printed on etc. From Australia, that is a $50,000+ piece, and such an item was indeed discovered in recent years. It is shown nearby - it was creased, torn, thinned and stained, but still sold for a mega sum at Phoenix Auction in Melbourne. SG 21cz, £50,000. ACSC 71aa, $A85,000. After the publicity following its discovery, another example was reported soon afterwards. The same occurred with the 1913 ½d Kangaroo - SG #1. Simon Dunkerely discovered the first sideways watermarked example of that one 30 years ago in a junk lot. He submitted it the the RPSV for a Certificate. Ray Chapman it is believed stated: “I do not own one, and have never seen one, therefore it MUST be fake” and the RPSV gave it a Certificate as “treated and faked”. That howlingly wrong Certificate is shown nearby. How on earth can anyone fake a sideways watemark, on an oblong perforated stamp? Disheartened, Simon sold it to Rodney Perry for a pittance. Rod simply mailed it to the BPA in London, who had none of Chapman’s prejudice, and within months it had a clear BPA Certificate, and ended up in Arthur

Ugly as sin, but sold for $A31,200 Gray’s $A7.15 milion Kangaroo collection, getting $A56,250. FOUR more copies later were discovered. Two of them perforated large “OS” were found recently.

World’s most inept Certificate?

It is to my mind THE most inept “Certificate” I have ever seen issued, from any “Expert” (sic) Committee, from anywhere, at any time, for any stamp. Most especially when it was submitted by Simon Dunkerley, who knew more about Roos that the entire Committee bundled together, and later on went to issue his own Photo Certificates - doubtless inspired by this travesty. After all the global publicity two more examples of this sideways watermark were then quickly discovered - the watermarks pointing in the OTHER direction to Simon’s example, proving at least 2 master sheets of 480 existed. Then, 16 years later, 2 more turned up, both perforated Large “OS” this time, just to be different! Mossgreen Auctions auctioned those two “OS” examples in February 2017, that had turned up in an

unchecked old lot. One was rather faulty. For the record, the very ugly off centred copy with ripped out perfs and toning shown nearby, estimated at $A7,500, was invoiced for $A31,200 - over 4 times estimate. Value about $1 otherwise. So do check your ½d Roos - many more must still exist in old albums. Other finds are not so easy to spot, or as clearly, and that is where an eagle eye comes in. I was sorting some loose Tasmania stamps this week I bought from The Townsville Hoard. Eight huge removalist cartons we few back with from Townsville, which had a 3 generation collection in there, and some very serious material among it. Many photos of that adventure here - tinyurl.com/TownsV The owners of the collection just wanted a fair and honest offer for the lot, as they were leery of the high auction fees, GST taxes on al fees, huge shipping costs and insurance, and of the stamp auctions that had gone into liquidation etc. They had bought off me in the past, so I was invited up, and advised to bring my cheque book.

Haul it all away please.

An interesting trip - we had a lovely dinner up there with a bunch of local stampboards members. It was 3 hours of flying to get up there, and Townsville is 1,700 km as the crow flies, or over 2,000 km to drive it - 23 hours non-stop! Very pretty part of the world, and indeed Margo’s parents first met up there, whilst serving during WW2. We had rented the largest 4WD Avis had, and schlepped it all back to our Hotel “Suite” to sort them out roughly. We only had a day or so before the flight home, and it was school holidays as I recall, so could not get another flight out for days. We had removal boxes stacked in the lounge room, bedroom, and the hallways! I sold about 8 or 10 removalist cartons online to stampboards members whilst up there. One chap also bought over 100 KILOS of coins and banknotes sight unseen, collected by an Army mate, which had stacks of silver and gold bullion coinage, and banknotes going back to £10 KGV etc. Half a room full. Best buy of his life I’d suggest! But quite imStamp News - 57

Virgin only allowed 4 cartons each to be checked though, 8 in all, so all the rest needed to be sold at silly low prices by the carton on stampboards, based on a few hurried pix, or given away to the stamp club there etc. We piled up the rental 4WD and headed to the little Belgian Gardens Post Office there, with a dozen large cartons of stuff to mail to the lucky buyers. The hoard had masses of mint blocks and sheets, so we pre-plastered the sides of these cartons with mint stamps. Luckily, I mail an awful lot of parcels, so have a good ‘’feel’’ as to what sort of cost that runs to. Glen Stephens red “Tombstone” transit cancel of nearby Hobart - “PRE-PAID - 27 MR - 1869”. So that one was clearly struck 2 days after the manuscript marking was inscribed at Oyster Cove. Got out my John Hardinge superb and recent, hard-bound “Tasmania Postmarks” handbook, and even in the index, there is not a single reference to OYSTER COVE. Odd. So more research entailed, as I was getting very interested in this now. I sent out an “SOS” to stampboard members, and more info came flowing is - a great read - tinyurl.com/OysterCove for more background on these. It was like a giant philatelic jigsaw puzzle! A Postage Stamp Detective Story.

Only 12 Aboriginals remained.

PPA tells us Oyster Cove was a “Receiving House” from 6/4/1857 to 8/9/1873. No cancel was ever issued for this tiny speck. Why? As it seems the population there was largely the tiny remainder of the Tasmanian Aboriginals. These included the last one to survive, Truganini - who of course was depicted on the striking 10c stamp from 1975, shown nearby. The University report in the link nearby shows only 12 aboriginals still remained alive there in 1869, when this Oyster Cove manuscript cancel letter was mailed. The rest had died. Truganini herself died a few year later, and is accepted as being the last Tasmania Aboriginal person. Indeed she may well be one of the women in this really ancient photograph, as only a few females were alive in 1858, when it was taken by Bishop of

One piece that caught my eye this week from “The Hoard”, were 2 snippings off mail from Tasmania, in an old envelope along with other near worthless mail clippings. To many readers, of little interest am sure, with a pen cancelled 6d Violet, and 2 x non full marginned later imperfs. But something about the pen cancel 6d made me look twice at it. Soaked off the piece, 99% of those reading this would assume it was fiscal use, as the vast bulk of these 6d Queens were indeed used thus. But some nagging dealer instinct told me it was worth looking into closer. Clearly both letters were in same handwriting, and obviously to the same person. I could not read the wording on top line of 6d. Margo looked, and had no idea. Handwriting from 150 years back is not easy to read, and the first word was not leaping out at me. The letters were TINY! After a bit of guessing at words, I came up with OYSTER. Typed that into google and voila, up came OYSTER COVE as a tiny remote location. So what we have here, and not seen by anyone for over 150 years most likely, is a neat manuscript cancel “Oyster Cove - 25 March 1869”. Alongside there is a clear Probably unseen for 150 years.

Market Matters Tasmania, Dr. Nixon. An INCREDIBLY early photo from Tasmania, on any subject matter. I researched it - real photos from the 1850s are most unusual. So a tiny little piece of Australian and Aboriginal history, all intertwined into these tiny pieces in The Hoard. I asked Tasmania postmark guru John Hardinge what he guessed the poorly struck barred numeral cancel might be on the 2d and 4d imperfs, and he very tentatively guessed at “66”. That numeral has long rumoured to have been allocated to Oyster Cove, but no strike of it has ever been seen or recorded. It might be an inverted strike of Aboriginal women at Oyster Cove. that numeral cancel - what do YOU think? All these are postally used There was no “Stamp Duty Act” until October 1863 so pen cancels on ALL Tasmania stamps used before then MUST be postally used, as usage of postage stamps to pay any kind of duty or tax was not yet authorised. The postal pen cancels took all sorts of forms - cross hatched grids, wavy lines, roughly hand written numerals, wavy squiggles, signatures, dates, and mixes of all the above! Early Tasmania stamps in particular one needs to be careful with, as stacks of the later imperfs had non-postal (or “fiscal”) pen cancels. However until October 1863, any pen cancel on early imperforate Tasmania (and there were many) must be POSTAL and not fiscal - confused? “Knowledge Is Power!” Another good reason to buy off real dealers who know their stuff, and not clueless eBay sellers. Maud was put on a train at Caney, Morgan County, and arrived at Jackson at 11am. The mail clerk pinned a letter on her dress and stated that he doubted the mailing’s legality. However, he said, “the child was on the mail train - therefore, she must be delivered.” On the way to her mother’s house, Maud was seen sitting on a pile of mail sacks in the postman’s wagon. “The child was seated on a pack full of mail sacks between the mail carrier’s knees, and was busily

FAROESE PHILATELY IN 2020 All the Nordic postal services have been hit very hard by the digitalisation of communications. Today some 90 % of the entire populations use their mobile phones or laptops for both work and pleasure. This has of course reduced mail volumes quite considerably but increased the parcels business as many people now order all kinds of goods from Internet-based companies. One of the consequences has been the steady increase in postal rates with Denmark now being a world leader in this particular field. Postal counters in supermarkets have replaced the traditional post offices in countries like Sweden and tests are under way to explore a system of reducing mail deliveries to every second day. Also some of the Nordic postal services have scrapped their philatelic services as they didn’t produce enough money to make them worthwhile. Iceland has announced that there will be no more stamp issues as there are ample supplies of old stamps to last for many years. Postnord, the Danish-Swedish postal corporation, no longer actively promotes its new stamp issues and

relies on a stamp company in Denmark to do the job. It is still quite a different matter as far as the Faroe Islands is concerned. Posta Stamps, the islands’ philatelic service, is still actively marketing its stamps and other philatelic products advertising in some of the major philatelic magazines and by taking part in stamps shows. The Faroe Islands located in the North Atlantic is a nation of some 48.000 people. Their language is far more similar to the language spoken a thousand years ago by the Vikings than the contemporary languages of Denmark, Norway or Sweden. In fact, this writer’s mother tongue is Swedish and when I hear anyone talking in Faroese I just manage to understand a few words. Thanks to their isolation, the Faroese have managed to preserve their ancient language. The fishing industry is the main economic activity but in more recent years tourism has added a lot to the islands’ revenue. However, the current pandemic has undoubtedly caused havoc to this industry as in the rest of the world.

Christer Brunström In this month’s column I would like to introduce STAMP NEWS readers to some of the more interesting Faroese issues of 2020. There were 18 new postage stamps, four souvenir sheets and a number of pictorial franking labels. Customers buying one of each new stamp issue would have to pay 491 Danish crowns which is the equivalent of AU $110. The Faroe Islands is a Danish possession which enjoys a considerable degree of autonomy in internal matters. Thus Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II is not only the reigning monarch of Denmark but also of the Faroes and Greenland. Early in 2020 she celebrated her 80th birthday but due to the coronavirus pandemic almost all the planned activities had to be cancelled. Margrethe is a popular Queen and thus it comes as no surprise that the Faroese decided to release a very special souvenir sheet (Fig. 1) to mark her birthday. It certainly was a remarkable design featuring a selection of local wildlife including the emblematic puffin and with the profile of the Queen printed in gold. The sheet was issued on 16 April 2020.

The Faroese are pretty good at team sports and in recent years have scored quite a few rather sensational successes in international football which is quite remarkable considering the size of the country. However, it was the game of volleyball that the Faroese post office wanted to spotlight in 2020. There were two stamps showing both a male and a female player (Fig. 2) in action. The pair went on sale on 24 February 2020. During World War II Denmark was occupied by German forces. To prevent the German armed forces from using the Faroes as a base for attacks on the UK, the British simply occupied the Faroe Islands. British forces were withdrawn at the end of the war. The British occupation army ran its own field post offices for the duration of the war. This rather interesting episode in Faroese postal history was marked by two stamps and a souvenir sheet (Fig. 3) on 27 April 2020. Chess has always been a popular pastime on the islands. The Faroese sometimes use larger chessboards which resulted in longer matches. Two stamps depicting locally made chessmen (Fig. 4) were issued on 21

FAROESE PHILATELY IN 2020 September 2000. The vast majority of Faroese postage stamps have designs which relate to local life and culture. The major exception in 2020 was a souvenir sheet marking the 250th anniversary of German composer Beethoven. The famous musician is depicted on a souvenir sheet (Fig. 5) along with examples of Faroese animals and plants. The design was the work of local artist Heidrik á Heigum and it was also produced as a poster in an edition of 150 copies. The sheet was issued on 21 September 2020. Most European postal administrations issued EUROPA stamps showing historical postal routes during the year. The Faroes of course took part with two values. Carrying the mail in small boats on a stormy sea or in mountainous areas in a snowstorm can be quite a challenge. In fact, there have been a few cases where post-

men have lost their lives while trying to deliver the mail to isolated communities in adverse weather conditions. Shown nearby is one of the stamps (Fig. 6) featuring a mail boat on its route to a distant island community. The set was released on 27 April 2020. To sum up, the 2020 Faroese stamp issues continued the tradition of showcasing local events, culture, nature, society and the islands’ history. I am quite impressed by the way Faroese postal officials avoid issuing stamps solely for the benefit of worldwide thematic collectors. Since the independent Faroese postal service was begun in 1975, the country has issued all of 941 different stamps. In case no local Aussie dealer stocks Faroese new issues may I suggest interested readers take a look at www.stamps.fo for more information on Faroese collecting opportunities.
