Victoria 1902 KEVII £2 Blue, **Superb CTO**: Sensational looking stamp as you can see. Really weirdly, this, and same design £1 were the ONLY postage stamps from any state, to issue stamps depicting KEVII. Q.Vic died in 1901, yet until the Kangaroo stamps in 1913, these 2 were the only postage stamps to show KEVII anywhere here - Q.Vic was depicted on every other State’s stamps. If this was the £2 that replaced it, in superb CTO, ACSC Cat for that is $7,500. Today’s prices for this stamp are ABSURD. This a fully Australian Commonwealth stamp - first issued a year after Federation. so secure key examples NOW, before retail prices keep climbing. SUPERB used Melbourne CTO cancel of 1907, (same implement as used on 1913 Roo CTO’s) clean and fresh, superb perfs and centering, and pristine flat, free of hinges and gook and gunk etc, and vibrant deep colour. USA 1906 Liberty Head $2½ Dollars, Quarter Eagle Gold Coin $A570: A rare coin, and this is in barely circulated grade it looks like. Gold coins mark and scuff readily as it is so soft, but this looks very decent to me. No edge dings, and high points in LIBERTY wording look unworn etc. Not used to taking coin pix, and they do not seem to scan, and do not have a close up setting on my camera, or tripod, or correct lighting so this is as good as you get at 5pm! Glen Stephens, after writing the Market Matters column in Stamp News for several decades, has decided to put down his pen. I wish to acknowledge Glen’s tireless dedication to this journal over many years, and wish him well. He will continue to be an advertiser with us, and always has some tempting offers on his website: www.glenstephens.com. You will also notice that this month’s magazine is a little thinner than usual; back to the number of pages when we took over in 2001. This is due to a couple of reasons. We have again absorbed a 10% postage price increase domestically to $3.30, and it now costs $13.50 to send to most overseas destinations. Also as digital sales increase and hard copy sales decline our print run has necessarily been reduced, making each 80 page copy $1.50 more to print. This sounds odd maybe, but pre-print costs remain the same, and paper costs are increased. We have maintained the cover price at $8.95 since 2007, something of a record I think. When we took over in early 2001 the cover price was $5.95, and so only a 50% increase in 20 plus years. In that time your daily newspaper has gone from around $1 to $2.50, making us still great value for money.
Australia Post is gearing up for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with the release of a specially designed stamp and plans to honour every Australian gold medallist of the 32nd Olympic Games in an instant stamp program. The ‘Ticket to Tokyo’ stamp, on sale from today, shows four interlocking abstract figures representing the spirit of the Olympic Games, while the Australian Gold Medallist instant stamps will depict each winning athlete at their medal ceremony and will be released as sheetlets within 72 hours of the medal presentations. Australia Post Group Philatelic Manager Michael Zsolt said that while these Games are certain to be unlike any other, it is important to remember what they stand for and to celebrate the athletes representing their country and performing at their peak. “The Olympic Games bring the whole world together through sport, and while they will look very different this year, there is no doubt they will be an incredible accomplishment for all involved,” Mr Zsolt said. “Australia Post takes great pride in celebrating the Olympic Games in this way and we look forward to honouring our great Olympians with our instant stamp program while the Games are underway.” The Games’ program features 339 events, in 33 sports incorporating 50 disciplines. Approximately 12,000 athletes will compete, with the Australian team comprising around 470 of the country’s most outstanding sportspeople. The ‘Ticket to Tokyo’ stamp is available now in sheets of 10, as a maxicard, first day cover and in a special sheetlet pack at participating Post Offices, via mail order on 1800 331 794, and online while stocks last. The Gold Medallist sheetlets will be available through participating Post Offices, the Australian Philatelic Bureau and online within 72 hours of each gold medal presentation. Despite great expectations, the British Guiana 1c magenta stamp got licked in a much anticipated auction last month. The magenta was expected to set a new world record for a single stamp sale at auction. Instead, the landed price paid by the new owner was $US8,722,350 ($A11,312,263 ),considerably short of the $US10-$15 million the stamp was expected to fetch. Even so, the stamp remains by weight one of the most highly valued items on the planet. “To philatelists, it’s a really big deal, since it’s the only copy of this stamp that has survived since 1856,” says the curator of philately at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum. The dark red, octagonal British Guiana 1c magenta is often called “the Mona Lisa of the stamp world.” But he admits, “it’s fairly unremarkable looking.” Murky in hue and scribbled upon by a colonial postal worker and former owners, the stamp disappointed some visitors to the museum when it was displayed there a few years ago. The stamp was rarely viewed until it was purchased by footwear magnate Stuart Weitzman in 2014, who allowed it to be exhibited for years. The stamp was printed just 16 years after the introduction of postage stamps. The postmaster in British Guiana, facing a stamp shortage, asked the

colony’s newspaper to print an emergency supply while awaiting a shipment of stamps from London. Displeased with the quality of the printing, the postmaster asked each postal clerk to initial the stamps upon sale to prevent fraud. The 1c bears the initials “EDW,” those of clerk E.D. Wight, and a postmark of April 4, 1856, from the town of Demerara. The stamp’s first owner was a Scottish boy named Vernon Vaughan who found it in 1873 among his family’s letters. He sold it to a local collector for 6 shillings. Since then, the stamp has passed through the world’s great collections, was seized by the French as reparations from Germany in 1920 and was owned for a while by John DuPont, a scion of one of America’s richest families, even after he was convicted of murdering a wrestler in 1997. The new owner is the iconic stamp company, Stanley Gibbons.
Red Mauritius rules
Reported at https://7news.com.au The so-called Red Mauritius, one of the most famous and rarest stamps in the world, has been sold by auction by Gaertners in Germany. The stamp is on cover with the 1847 Mauritius 1d Ball Cover the most expensive philatelic item ever auctioned. The cover was invoiced at double estimate at Є10,027,800 ($A15,776,000), over 50% more than Guiana. According to Gaertners, the cover has only changed hands every few decades. A total of three interested parties had bid on the phone after the stamp was offered for sale by private owner on Saturday morning at a starting price of 4 million euros. The Red Mauritius was used for the first time to pay the postage for invitations to a costume ball. Three of the envelopes are said to have survived. “Queen Elizabeth II has one of the ‘Ball Covers’ in her philatelic collection,” explained auctioneer Christoph Gaertner. Another copy is in the Philatelic Collection of the British Library in London, he added. “Both can never be sold.”

The third still in existence, he said, was the one just auctioned in private hands. The previous owner, from Singapore, only parted with the rare stamp with a heavy heart, he said. The “Post Office” orange-red one-penny stamp along with its deep blue two-pence counterpart were engraved by England-born miniature painter Joseph Osmond Barnard, who stowed away on a ship to Mauritius in 1838. However, the stamps weren’t issued until 11 years later in the then-colony Mauritius on Sep. 21, 1847. The price for this copy was reportedly so high because the other two are not for sale. The buyer is an anonymous German speaker from Europe.

Here comes the sun
Reported at http://www.collectspace.com Last month, United States Postal Service has released “Sun Science,” a collection of 10 stamps celebrating the study of heliophysics using the imagery from a NASA probe. “We illuminate the light and warmth of our nearest star by highlighting these stunning images of the Sun on stamps,” the USPS wrote. “These 10 images come from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, a spacecraft launched in February 2010 to keep a constant watch on the Sun.” Each of the 10 stamps feature a single image of the Sun set against a black background. Each depicts the Sun in bold colours, which are based on the different wavelengths that reveal or highlight specific features of its activity. The images display common events on the Sun, such as solar flares, sunspots and coronal loops. The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) was NASA’s first mission dedicated to its “Living With a Star” program, which focuses on increasing our understanding of the causes of solar variability and its impacts on Earth. Launched into an inclined geosynchronous orbit in 2010, SDO has been able to make continuous observations of the Sun while transmitting its data to a dedicated ground station in New Mexico.

Party time in China
Reported at https://www.globaltimes.cn Note: The Global Times is a daily tabloid newspaper under the auspices of the Chinese Communist Party’s flagship People’s Daily newspaper A number of postal fans lined up at Shanghai Post recently to purchase commemorative stamps and envelopes to celebrate the Communist Party of China (CPC)’s 100th anniversary. China Post issued a set of 20 commemorative stamps and a commemorative cover, revealing the 100-year journey the CPC has travelled. The stamps use red and gold as the main tones of the picture. The commemorative envelopes contain the pattens of the Party emblem, Great Wall and a golden inscription of Chinese characters saying “Staying true to our original aspiration and founding mission.” Yang Chaode, 66, a CPC member himself from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, lined up from Wednesday afternoon. Yang couldn’t help conceal his excitement to purchase the stamps, “my friends in Xinjiang are waiting for me to send the letters to them, with the postmark in Shanghai, the birthplace of CPC on July 1,” Yang told the Global Times on Thursday. Meanwhile in Hong Kong it was announced that Hong Kong Post plans to issue a set of commemorative stamps, a stamp sheetlet and other philatelic pieces to mark the centenary

of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on July 1. This is the first time the Hong Kong Post issues commemorative stamps featuring the CPC. The set of four stamps showcase the site of the first national congress of the CPC, Tiananmen rostrum where Chairman Mao Zedong solemnly proclaims the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the development of cities and the reform and opening-up, as well as China’s scientific and technologic achievements in the 21st century. The pride of Erin
Reported at https://www.irishcenst-pride-stamptral.com An Post, Ireland’s postal service, has issued two colourful new stamps featuring the rainbow Pride flag and the words ‘Pride’ and ‘Bród’ (as gaeilge) to celebrate Ireland’s Pride Movement.
An Post says it worked closely with representatives of the LGBT+ community in planning for the stamps which were designed by Dublin company, Unthink, and unveiled mid-June.. “We are delighted to join with our staff and customers in celebrating Bród and the Irish Pride Movement,” CEO of An Post, said upon the launch. “Two hard-working national LGBT support groups, BeLonG To and LGBT Ireland, will benefit from the sale of the stamps, in line with An Post’s purpose to work for the common good and to improve the quality of life now and for the generations to come”, he added. The Pride flag was originally designed by American artist and activist Gilbert Baker in 1978 to represent the diverse LGBT community.

SingPost said the stamps, measuring 81.6mm in height each, celebrate skyrise greenery projects built by both public and private developers in the last 10 years that have “inspired new possibilities and frontiers in shaping Singapore as a city in nature”. The six developments featured are Khoo Teck Puat Hospital , Oasia Hotel Downtown, Kampung Admiralty, Jewel Changi Airport, SkyTerrace@Dawson and Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum. Despite being land scarce, SingPost said the commitment to greening Singapore remains a priority in the country’s future development. The Landscaping for Urban Spaces and High-Rises (LUSH) programme introduced in 2009 to encourage building developers to adopt skyrise greenery in their building design was one of many initiatives to support implementation of skyrise greening island-wide, it said. As of end 2020, SingPost said the LUSH scheme has enabled the introduction of more than 250ha of greenery within new developments in the past decade.
Beloved Bluenose centenary celebrated
Reported at https://ca.finance.yahoo.com Canada Post has issued a pair of se-tenant stamps marking the Bluenose centennial on June 29. “On Jan. 8, 1929, we released our first Bluenose stamp,” Canada Post CEO said. “Generations of collectors continue to call it one of the most beautiful stamps ever produced in this country. In fact, the stamp was so beloved – and it represented the Canadian spirit so nicely – that we featured it again on a commemorative stamp in 1982. We’ve also celebrated the stories of those whose lives were forever tied to the Bluenose, like Captain Angus Walters in 1988, and the ship’s designer, William James Roué in 1998.” 16 - Stamp News
Roué’s 17th vessel design was the Bluenose (also known as the “Queen of the North Atlantic”), which was built in Lunenburg, N.S., before launching on March 26, 1921. Canada’s most recognized sailing vessel excelled at fishing and racing in the 1920s and 1930s. The schooner was born of a seafaring rivalry between two fishing communities: Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, and Gloucester, Massachusetts. Competition over whose fishing vessels were the fastest led to the creation of the International Fishermen’s Trophy series in 1920. Bluenose was built to challenge the Americans, who had won the inaugural competition.

There was a 7-foot long alligator in the lobby. The reptile was resting inside the Spring Hill post office after walking into the lobby through the office’s automatic doors after opening hours. The customer, who dropped by the post office at 3:30 am, immediately called the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. The alligator was safely removed by a trapper, according to the sheriff’s office.

Over 5,800 US postal service workers were attacked or bitten by dogs in 2020, according to data released from the USPS recently. The top five states for bites were California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania That number remained relatively stable from the previous year. The USPS says that even “one bite is one too many,” and is releasing the numbers alongside do’s and dont’s for dog owners as part of their annual National Dog Bite Awareness Week in June. “When a carrier feels unsafe, mail service could
be interrupted, not only for the dog owner, but for the entire neighbourhood,” the agency says. “When mail service is interrupted, mail must be picked up at the Post Office. Service will not be restored until the dog is properly restrained.” An increase in dog bites nationwide began in March 2020 of last year, and experts attribute the spike to “the disruption in routines at the start of pandemic lockdowns, when dogs were dealing with owner stress and more people around the house throughout the day.”

The Taiwan Postal Union recently urged its members to return their medals and commemorative stamps to protest poor treatment, calling the honours a “slap in the face” at a time when their demands are not being heard. Postal workers have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic by shipping equipment such as sanitiser and masks, and distributing stimulus vouchers, the union said. Postal workers have been calling for Saturdays off, shorter work hours, extended delivery times, suspension of advertising mail and payment on delivery, and COVID-19 vaccine prioritisation to keep them Stamp News - 17

A Syracuse postal worker was handcuffed and confronted after being seen on surveillance camera stuffing mail down his pants. Jason M. Powell removed the mail from his pants while in custody and admitted hiding it so he could open it later and steal its contents, according to investigators. The investigation began after a resident complained that his mail had been opened and was 18 - Stamp News
missing a gift card. That mail was traced back to the Syracuse Distribution Centre during a time Powell was working. Others at the centre described Powell’s “furtive” behaviour while processing mail, so agents set up a surveillance camera. Surveillance footage revealed Powell took a yellow greeting card from a pile of mail and placed it in the front of his pants. Powell then removed an additional two mail pieces from the sorting line and placed those down the front of his pants. Investigators moved in, handcuffing Powell and taking him to the Inspector General’s Office inside the facility. Powell removed the mail pieces from his pants and agreed to an interview, admitting to having hidden mail in a similar fashion during previous shifts, looking for gift cards or cash. Powell was charged with a federal misdemeanour of obstruction of mails. He faces up to six months in jail if convicted.

On the third, he is depicted at the Independence Day celebrations, where, in September 1964, he handed over the formal independence documents to Malta’s prime minister George Borg Olivier. Prince Philip’s links with the island go back generations. His mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was brought up in different places including Malta. Her father, Prince Louis of Battenberg, was occasionally stationed here during his time as a naval officer. Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy in 1938, moving to Malta two years after he married. He was second-in-command of HMS Chequers, leader of the first destroyer flotilla of the Mediterranean Fleet. While HMS
Chequers underwent a refit, he stayed at the house rented to his uncle, Lord Mountbatten – Villa Guardamangia in Pietà that is now being restored and planned to become a tourist attraction. A month later, Elizabeth flew out to join him – sparking off a long relationship between the royal couple and Malta, the only other place, other than the UK they ever called home. Maltapost usually issue between 10 and 12 different stamps a year, but the Prince Philip stamp was added to the list after his death, due to his strong relationship with the island.

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for August 2021. This month’s column looks at current New Zealand Post postal stationery, new issues from Australia Post, definitive C5 STO stamped envelopes for photo developers, new postal stationery catalogues including the Tasmanian Postal Stationery Catalogue and forthcoming events. 50th Anniversary of Operation Overlord Stamped Envelope On 7 June 2021 a stamped envelope (Figure 1) was issued for the 50th anniversary of Operation Overlord during the Vietnam War. Operation Overlord took place on 5–14 June 1971 and involved Australian and US troops. The stamp area on the envelope, which was sold for $1.35, features a group portrait of the Australian army’s 5 Platoon 3 RAR while the design of the envelope includes a Centurion tank. The envelope was designed by Sonia Young. Another envelope was issued with the imprinted stamp in the same design but with a different cachet design including a helicopter. This envelope was sold as a PNC but was not issued mint. Pre-Paid Postcards New pre-paid postcards have been reported: Murchinson Bridge, Perth City Skyline, Christmas Island Robber Crab, Hobart, Perth Skyline, Umpherston Sinkhole, and Broome Gamtherline Point. The June 2021 postal stationery column reported on localised postcards which can be ordered on-line by postal managers of licensed post offices (LPOs) using a photograph provided by the LPO. As with other PNC issues which have the appearance of postal stationery, these are not sold mint and hence do not prepay postage. Recent issues include the Quokka (Figure 3) and Home and Away PNCs.

Current New Zealand Post Postal Stationery Current postal stationery sold by New Zealand Post are very utilitarian in design. (As New Zealand Post is only one of a number of domestic postal operators in New Zealand, postal stationery is also issued by other postal operators.) New Zealand Post sells stamped envelopes for domestic use (Figure 4) in DL, E9, E35, C5, and C4 sizes, all featuring the New Zealand Post logo, the description ‘postage included’ and three vertical bars. Plain and window-faced envelopes are available. There are also international stamped envelopes, DL, DL (window) and C4 envelopes for use to Australia and the South Pacific (Figure 5) and a DL envelope for worldwide use (Figure 6). There is also a range of plastic satchels for use within New Zealand (Figure 7). These come in five sizes ranging in cost from $3.50 to $9.50 with the cost shown prominently on the satchel and inscribed ‘Postage included NZ only’. The current issues are ‘Made with 80% recycled plastic”. There are also prepaid ‘recycled’ padded bags (Figure 8) in two sizes selling for $5.90 and $8.60.

lopes from the then current definitive series which differed from the regular post office C5 stamped envelopes in having a ‘window’. The C5 envelopes were the perfect size for sending a set of photographs printed from a roll of film and placed in the standard photo envelopes with space for negatives that were used by film developers for many years before digital photography became common place. (Do you remember silver-based film which has now been replaced almost entirely by digital photography?). In addition, the envelopes had advertising and address details for the companies and other differences from envelopes sold over post office counters, for 22 - Stamp News
example, no address lines on the reverse for the sender’s address, no instructions or details of the design and no barcode. Companies using the envelopes included Photosavers (Sydney), National Photos (Moorebank NSW, Gold Coast Queensland) and Extrafilm (Gold Coast Queensland). Some of the envelopes are precancelled with an undated Gold Coast Mail Centre cancel. Ian McMahon Nauru Revalued Stamped Postcards In 1992 and 1993 Nauru issued a set of six prepaid pictorial postcards for the stamp exhibitions, Kuala Lumpur 92 and Singpex 93. These postcards had a 45c stamp impression. The reverse of the postcards had views of Nauru. Steve Zirinsky has provided examples of these postcards used to the United Kingdom postmarked Nauru 11 August 1997. The postcards have two ‘PAID 5c NAURU POST OFFICE’ handstamps to make up the postage rate to the United Kingdom (Figure 14).

Tasmanian Postal Stationery Tasmanian Postal Stationery (Figure 15) by Malcolm Groom and Allen Shatten aims to present all that is currently known about Tasmanian postal stationery. It covers the period up to (and sometimes beyond) 1912. The authors have half a lifetime of experience between them of collecting, researching and exhibiting Tasmanian Postal Stationery. The Groom “Printed to Private Order” exhibit of Tasmanian Postal Stationery achieved Large Gold and Best-in-class at Sydney 2019 . Both authors have published articles on various aspects of Tasmanian Postal Stationery over the years. The book contains commentaries and listings for post cards, envelopes issued by the post office, registered envelopes, stamped to order stationery, reply cards, letter cards and wrappers. Each section commences with a history of the category. As well as the stationery items themselves, the book presents essays and proofs, specimen overprints and official punctures, printing details where known, earliest and latest dates of use and assessments of rarity. The book is profusely illustrated. The authors have attempted to settle some points of contention, differing in some cases from previous publications. Post Office reports to Parliament have been applied to estimate usage over thirty years, which is presented along with other evidence to support new conclusions. The wrappers and stamped to order sections include comprehensive comments and images of the businesses that adapted the stationery for their purposes. The book then describes the different types and varieties of all of the bi-coloured postal stationery issued until 1905 including the postal cards, reply cards, letter cards and wrappers. The second volume focuses on the usage of the bi-colored postal stationery in all postal historical aspects, including rates, supplementary frankings, special types of mail (samples of no value, border mail, ship mail, captain’s letters, naval mail etc.), postal markings (cancellations, date postal markings, railway postal markings, ship postal markings, private postal markings, return handstamps, office handstamps, etc.), labels manuscript markings and much more. Cinderella Corner Newcastle
Welcome to the August edition of Cinderella Corner. This month’s piece has been provided by cinderella collector and enthusiast Mr. John Patterson of New South Wales. His insight into the labels discussed is rich and invaluable; I thank him for his efforts and remarkable contribution. Sun, sand, surf, steel. String these words in a sentence and most New South Welshmen will know immediately what you are referring to. Add the words Stockton Bridge, Silverchair and The Screaming Jets to this alliterative cavalcade and most Australians would instantly recognise that New South Wales’s second largest city Newcastle sits at the centre of this word cloud. Another ‘S’ word that deserves association with Newcastle is stamps. Newcastle has had a highly active philatelic society since at least 1918, and of course readers will be aware that her sesquicentenary was the subject of a 1947 Australian postal stamp issue comprising three values. Newcastle has also been the subject and source of several important and interesting cinderella stamp issues which this article shall explore. Newcastle is best known for the important contribution which her gargantuan coal and steel industries played in the economic prosperity of Australia over many decades. These industries influenced most aspects of life in Newcastle by helping to fund sport-
ing, architectural and artistic infrastructure. They also helped to instil a strong sense of social conscience and local pride amongst her citizens. These characteristics are reflected in Newcastle’s cinderella stamps.
World War 1
The first official national day known as “Australia Day” was held on July 30th, 1915 as a fundraising day for Australia’s World War 1 effort. This was the only year Australia Day fell on that date which allows us to precisely date the scarce block of six shown in Figure 1 that was produced to support Newcastle’s fundraising for the day. Each stamp measures 31mm x 32mm.
The 1930s
Figure 2 shows a stamp produced by the Newcastle Philatelic Society to promote the visit to Newcastle by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester during his 1934 Australian tour. 1934 was the 75th anniversary year of the 1859 proclamation of Newcastle as a principality hence the reference to “Jubilee Celebrations” in the text. Newcastle’s first major stamp exhibition was scheduled to coincide with the Dukes visit. (Dimensions: 41mmx 51mm). Whilst the stamp at Figure 3 was produced in Melbourne it presents as a superbly visual advertisement for the high quality coal which had been extracted from Newcastle since 1790 and exported

internationally since 1799. Pelaw Main was a major colliery 30kms west of Newcastle famous for the quality of its gas coal, which the Melbourne Steamship Company regularly shipped down the East Coast for the Melbourne market. (Dimensions: 39mm x 53mm).
World War 2
Newcastle played a crucial role in Australia’s World War 2 campaign. The “Fortress Newcastle” living histories project indicates that during WW2 Newcastle had the largest mainland military establishment in Australia’s history, and was the critical hub for Australia’s largest war materials production program. It is also the only place in Australia where coastal defences were fired at an enemy naval vessel (8/6/1942). It should therefore come as no surprise then that the population of Newcastle was highly active in recruitment and fundraising for the war effort. The stamp at Figure 4 was produced to support WW2 RAAF recruitment efforts, inviting Novacastrians to sign up as aircrew at the Hunter Street RAAF depot. Campaigns such as this were high-
ly successful in attracting local recruits and were probably helped in part by the training and operational opportunities available close to home through the nearby Williamtown RAAF base. (Dimensions: 40mm x 52mm). Figure 5 shows a scarce group of fundraising stamps exhorting Novacastrians to immediately support their local WW2 fundraising efforts by purchasing War Savings Stamps or Certificates Now. This design is only known with a Newcastle attribution, so it is most likely a locally conceived and produced issue. The fairly intimidating and ferocious soldier captured in a dramatic half tone action pose could well be a local recruitee photographed demonstrating his approach to the hun during local training. This stamp is only known in these three colours and measures 36mm x 58mm. Figures 6, 7 and 8 show three different locally produced Newcastle Schools Red Cross Appeal one penny fund raising stamps from the World War 2 period. The stamps were sold to and by schoolchildren and the money raised was used to help fund the Red Cross’s charitable wartime activities. The label Stamp News - 41
Cinderella Corner identified with Figure 7 was also issued as a 3 pence value. It is interesting to note that despite the fact that fundraising efforts were conducted in schools across Australia during WW2 these stamps are the only WW2-era Red Cross fundraising stamps shown in Dave Elsmore’s respected online catalogue that specifically reference a schools appeal. This would suggest that the conception and production of these stamps (and the associated fundraising program) was entirely a local affair. In common with many other early Australian localised fundraising stamp issues these stamps were produced using relatively inexpensive paper and basic printing, rouletting and design – production attributes which can impart a certain primitive charm and localised interest to what some people might otherwise consider unremarkable stamps. These stamps measure 31mm x 33mm (Fig. 6), 25mm x 37mm (Fig. 7) and 30mm x 28mm (Fig. 8).
The Sesquicentenary
In 1947 Newcastle celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first known exploration of the area by an Englishman, Lieutenant John Shortland. During September 1797 Shortland sailed into the mouth of a previously unexplored river and noted the obviously abundant coal deposits there as well as the deep water harbour which the river mouth lead to. He named the river the Hunter after the NSW Governor of the time, and as soon as he reported the presence of the
coal to Governor Hunter the processes which lead to Newcastle’s future role as Australia’s leading coal producing area were put in train. Within two years Australia was exporting coal from Newcastle, as well as using it for much of the energy and heating requirements of the nascent colony. The 1947 sesquicentenary featured parades, processions, fireworks, all sorts of exhibitions, race meetings, concerts, athletics carnivals, the unveiling of monuments and the delivery of speeches. Much of the focus of the event was geared towards the importance of Newcastle as an industrial centre, a subject which is the feature of the promotional stamps shown at Figures 9 and 10. Figure 11 shows a more generalised promotional stamp for the anniversary featuring Nobby’s Beach and the iconic geological feature known as “Nobbys Head” which is topped by a lighthouse constructed in 1858. Newcastle’s industrial character is referenced in the image by a large boat steaming past Nobbys into the Harbour. The dimensions are Figure 9 – 55mm x 70mm, Figure 10 - 45mm x 50mm, and Figure 11 - 41mm x 64mm. A major philatelic exhibition was also a feature of the 1947 sesquicentenary celebrations, held in Tyrrell Hall and run by the Newcastle Philatelic Society. The rather grand classically themed Souvenir Sheet at Figure 12 was produced to promote the exhibition and is often encountered on cover. In common with Figure 11 this stamp features an image of Nobby’s Beach, Head and Lighthouse however, despite show-

This sheet also references the importance of industry and commerce to Newcastle’s self image, whilst its imposing size attempts to add further gravitas to the classical iconography. The Newcastle Show
In common with many Australian towns and cities, the annual show is a major feature of Newcastle’s calendar. The Newcastle Show is an agricultural show that features show jumping and sideshow rides amongst its many attractions, along with a range of competition exhibitions covering such diverse subjects as wood chopping, parkour and robotics. First held in 1902 an indication of the shows importance to the local community can be gleaned from the fact that up until 2012 Newcastle Show Day was a local public holiday. During the 1960s and 1970s a promotional cinderella was produced annually for the show. Although
featuring the same design each year the series is notable for the attractive colour combinations that were changed for each issue. The other primary difference between each years issue was the inclusion of the dates for the show in the particular year being promoted. These dates are the primary tool for determining the particular year of issue. Figure 13 illustrates some of the colour combinations used for this issue. The stamps measure 40mm x 50 mm (with some minor variations between the years) and are sometimes found on cover.
The Bicentennial
The colourful and appealing sheet at Figure 14 was produced by the Newcastle Bicentennial Community Committee during the 1988 Australian Bicentennial year to promote local landmarks, businesses and wildlife, as well as a range of local Bicentennial festivities including the major stamp exhibition Norpex (once again presented by the Newcastle Philatelic society). The sheet was produced as perforate, imperforate and roulette. Individual stamps are sometimes seen on cover. The roulette sheet measures 165mm x 63 mm, and each stamp measures 38mm x 26mm. Hopefully readers have enjoyed this brief introduction to the cinderella stamps of Newcastle. With any luck Newcastle will continue to be the source and subject of many more interesting cinderellas for years to come. Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation APF Awards 2022 The APF will be holding its annual general meeting in Melbourne at the end of this month. Hopefully, we will be able to present the 2021 APF Awards on time this year as the 2020 presentations had to be deferred until March of this year due to COVID. The Australian Philatelic Order was established by the APF in 1994 to recognize and honour philatelists who have given distinguished service to Australian Philately. The awards are now an established highlight of the Australian philatelic calendar with a formal presentation ceremony held in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting of the APF. This year we have awarded two Member of Australian Philately (MAP) where nominees are considered based on their services to organized philately, distinguished philatelic study and research. This includes judging, promotion of philately and public dissemination including teaching. This year we are also awarding an Australian Research Award APF Research Award. This award was introduced in 1997 to ensure recognition of those who have made significant contributions in the field of research. We are also presenting a Service to Philately at the National Level award (SPAN) where the nominee must have made an outstanding contribution, in a leadership role, through commitment, resourcefulness and creativity to philately in a specific field, area or program at the national level for not less than five years. The recipients of these awards and their citations follow. Anthony (Tony) Presgrave APR, FRPSL, FRPSV, FACCC - Member of Australian Philately (see figure 1) Tony had a childhood collection but started specialised collecting in 1970 and formed collections of Australian Commonwealth, South Australian Departmentals and general issues, River Murray Shipping, Travelling Post Offices of South Australia, Picture Postcards and more recently the Slogan Cancellations of the Adelaide GPO and Postmarking Machines in South Australia. Many of these collections have been exhibited with some achieving gold and large gold medals. Being a member of over ten clubs and societies, 44 - Stamp News

Tony has been recognised with a Fellowship from three (RPSL, RPSV & ACCC) and Life Membership of the Philatelic Society of South Australia. Tony has served continuously on the SA Philatelic Council since 1995 with three separate stints as the Judges Registrar, his current position, amounting to 18 out of the 26 years served to date. In recognition of his services to philately in South Australia, Tony was awarded the Briskham Medal in 1995, the highest award bestowed by the SAPC. In 2002, Tony received the Australian Philatelic Order Research Award. Author of three books - Albury Postal Services 1975, The Departmental Stamps of South Australia 1992 and The Travelling Post Offices of South Australia 1997, he was also joint author of a fourth, The Railway Parcel Stamps of Australia 1980. Currently editor of two journals, Tony was also Cinderella Corner columnist for Stamp News for 15 years. Tony has been the APF Frames Project Officer for the last 15 years, Cinderella Class Convenor for the last 13 years and APF Research Officer for South

Philatelic Development Officer, APF Australia for the last 10 years. An accredited Commissioner to National Exhibitions since 1992, Tony has also been the Australian Commissioner to overseas exhibitions. Apprenticed in 1992, Tony’s judging career spans almost thirty years during which time he has judged in every state of Australia except Tasmania. He is currently accredited to judge Traditional, Postal History, Literature, Open, Picture Postcards and One Frame. Tony has been a Team Leader on numerous occasions and was Jury Chair for Adelaide Stampex 2008. Tony has promoted the hobby through numerous displays and talks at local service clubs, and a periodic display in his local post office culminating in his being instrumental in obtaining Australia Post approval for the issue of postage stamps in 2003 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of shipping on the River Murray system. Tony Presgrave is well deserving of being recognised as a Member of the Australian Philatelic Order. John Moore - Member of Australian Philately (see figure 2) In 1992, when John Moore became a Committee Member of the Newcastle Philatelic Society, he began his long and productive service to organised philately. Since then, he has undertaken many functions in organised philately including collecting, exhibiting, judging, philatelic study and research and the promotion of our hobby to the public. Over time

he has edited philatelic works, designed and developed philatelic products, and trained other philatelists in exhibiting, judging and organising and running events. John has been a long-serving member on the Australian Philatelic Federation Executive including Secretary, President Vice President and Public Relations Officer. He has made a major contribution at the State level having served on the Committee for 17 years. At the local Club level, he has held the position of President, Vice President and Secretary. He has been Secretary and Chair for National and International Exhibitions including Melbourne 2017 where he was Secretary and Australian Commissioner and Melbourne 2022 where he is current Chair of the organising Committee. John has exhibited in the Traditional, Postal History, Postal Stationery, Modern, Aero, Open, Picture Postcard and One-frame classes. He has achieved gold medal level at National exhibitions and large vermeil internationally. Starting as an apprentice in 2012, John has judged extensively at National exhibitions including working as a team leader and Jury Secretary. His sound judgement and trustworthiness have informed the decisions made by the Philatelic Development Council (PDC) in NSW and the Australian Philatelic Federation (APF) at national level. In summary he has made major and long-term contributions to our hobby. Dave Elsmore - Australian Research Award (see figure 3) The APF preamble to the Research Awards contains the following phases. That the recipients should provide `particular value to the Australian Philatelic Community where the research and work record the work for the benefit of other collectors’ and `…a special talent in conducting research and making it available to other collectors successfully’. It is clear than Dave Elsmore has and will continue to fulfill those aims. He was the pioneer in Australia of the use of electronic media for which he is internationally known as well as the outstanding advocate, exhibitor, and publisher of Australian Revenues and Railway stamp together for a wide range of fields of philately Stamp News - 45

His on-line catalogues of Australian revenues, cinderellas, railway parcel stamps and related material are the current standard references for collectors and dealers all over the world. He has published extensively including journal articles in recognized philatelic journals as well as books. He has contributed articles based on his research to Stamp News over many years. In addition to his research, he has been an active member of related Societies. Acting as web master for many years for the Revenue Society in the UK, as one of the most active members of the Perfin Club of New Zealand and Australia and for over 30 years the Exchange Superintendent of the Cinderella Stamp Club of Australia, where some years ago he successfully introduced internet sales associated with exchange books. His service, research and promoting Revenue and Cinderella philately has been recognised with this award. Alma Downes SPAN Award – (see figure 4) Alma has been a tireless “behind the scenes” worker at National Exhibitions in every State and the ACT working predominantly in the Bin Room but if not required in that role, helping with the mounting and dismounting of exhibits pre and post shows. Initially under the tutelage of an experienced Bin room manager, Alma has now undertaken the role of Bin Room Manager for National Exhibitions held in Adelaide as well as continued to work in the Bin 46 - Stamp News
Rooms interstate. In addition, Alma has worked in the Bin Room at the International Exhibitions held in Melbourne, namely Australia 2013 and Melbourne 2017, as well as being a Team Leader amongst the volunteers at both shows. Closer to home, Alma has also helped in the catering department for numerous National Exhibitions held at the Drill Hall in Adelaide as well as assisting with the catering in SAPHIL House when the APF AGM has been held in South Australia. Alma is also a supporter of National Exhibitions through her roles a Juror (Picture Postcard Class) as well as exhibitor having attained medals to the level of Gold. She has also represented South Australia as a team member in the Australasian Picture Postcard Challenges in 2016 & 2019 when on both occasions South Australia won the Challenge. Alma has also supported Australian Philately overseas by exhibiting on several occasions. envelope, post card, newspaper wrapper, letter sheet or aerogramme with an imprinted stamp (or indicium) denoting that postage has been paid. In other words, it’s a stationery item with the stamp already printed as part of the design rather than one requiring an adhesive postage stamp to be affixed. Figure 5 shows an example of an indicium that was in use in Tasmania from 1893. From a collecting point of view, think of these items as ‘stamps with exceptionally large margins’ as all the interest in a postage stamp can be found in postal stationery, and more. Very often issued by postal authorities, postal stationery can display plate flaws, shades, different printing plates, specimens and a variety of values just like a postage stamp. Some postal stationery is amongst the most attractive of items available to collectors. The Australian States, like most postal authorities around the world, issued a wide variety of postal stationery, often bearing a current postage stamp issue design and using the original stamp dies in their production. In the case of UK and British Commonwealth colonies, stamp catalogue producers such as Stanley
Gibbons ceased listing postal stationery early in the 20th Century. One result of this decision is that for some countries, information about postal stationery has been more difficult to find and this may have limited the interest of some collectors in this material. This is a great pity as postal stationery is highly collectable and present a remarkably interesting area to study and collect. It is therefore an especially important occasion when a new book on the postal stationery of an Australian colony becomes available. Published by the Tasmanian Philatelic Society (TPS), this new 184-page work by well-known collectors and researchers Malcolm Groom and Allen Shatten will be available in November 2021. The TPS has an ongoing program to publish the best available information on all aspects of Tasmania and this is the latest project. This book aims to present all that is currently known about Tasmanian postal stationery. It covers the period up to (and sometimes beyond) the transfer of powers to the Commonwealth in 1912. Greenland’s Apostle Anyone who pays close attention to Greenland’s stamp output will soon discover that one person has received far more philatelic recognition than all others (except for Danish royalty). Hans Egede (1686-1758) was not even a Greenlander but he has appeared four times on Greenlandic stamps and in 2021 he made yet another appearance. The year 2021 marks the 300th anniversary of his arrival on the big island. To celebrate this important anniversary, POST Greenland issued two stamps and a souvenir sheet (Fig. 1) on 8 June 2021. The design is based on a painting (Hans Egede preaching in the Godthaab Fjord) by Greenlandic artist and writer Hans Lynge (1906-1988). Lynge painted this picture in 1955. Egede was Danish-Norwegian and trained as a clergyman. It seems he was attracted to far-away and isolated places and in 1707 he was appointed pastor of a community at Lofoten in the north of Norway.
He obviously had a strong desire to enter the mission field proclaiming the message of Jesus Christ to unreached people. Greenland was to be his calling as a missionary and he arrived there in 1621 along with his wife Gertrud Rask and their children. His main accomplishment was the reintroduction of Christianity in Greenland. Already around the year 1000, Norsemen from Norway had settled in Greenland bringing along their Christian faith. The seat of the bishop was located at Gardar. But, for some unknown reason, the Norsemen abandoned their settlements after some 400 years. Thus, when Egede arrived in 1621, the Inuit people of Greenland practised their ancient religious beliefs. Today there are ruins of the churches and chapels built by the Norsemen almost a millennium ago. Greenland has issued many stamps remembering the Arctic Vikings. The stamp in Fig. 2 shows what the seat of the bishop in Gardar must

Christer Brunström have looked like in the 12th century. Now Hans Egede was so much more than an ordinary pastor. He was a brilliant colonial administrator allowing Denmark to take control of the distant island. As a geographer, he explored parts of the island and, thanks to his work, the rest of the world was told about Greenland and its people. Paul Egede (1708-1789), Hans Egede’s son, grew up in Greenland and in many ways he continued his father’s work. He compiled the first Danish-Greenlandic dictionary and he published a Greenlandic version of the New Testament and a hymn book in the same language. Hans Egede remained on the island until 1736 when he returned to Copenhagen in Denmark where he became the director of a seminary training church workers for service in Greenland. He was succeeded by his son Paul in 1747. Summing up Egede’s work, he undoubtedly

was the first person to explore the island in a more scientific way but his main ambition was always the teaching of the Christian faith. The town of Egedesminde (today Aasiaat) on Greenland’s West Coast was founded by his son Niels Rasch Egede in 1763. Theologically Hans Egede was a dogmatic representative of the Lutheran church. His sons, who both spoke Greenlandic, undoubtedly had a closer connection with the island’s Inuit populations. Let’s take a look at the stamps which have honoured the memory of Hans Egede. It all started in 1958 when a single 30-ore value (Fig. 3) commemorated the 200th anniversary of the missionary’s death. It was Greenland’s very first commemorative stamp. The stamp was designed by Viggo Bang. In 1971 a single 60-ore stamp commemorated the 250th anniversary of Hans Egede’s arrival. This stamp was the result of the combined efforts of Greenlandic artist Jens Rosing and Polish-Swedish

Greenland’s Apostle engraver Czeslaw Slania who worked together to produce a large amount of Greenlandic stamps. The design of this particular issue shows Hans Egede and Getrud Rask on the deck of the Hope approaching Greenland (Fig. 4). On 3 July 1971 there was a second stamp created by Rosing and Slania featuring the missionary couple. Hans Egede and Gertrud Rask are shown talking to two Greenlanders. This stamp (Fig. 5) has a denomination of 60 ore with a surcharge of 10 ore going to Church Aid. Hans Egede reappears on a 1978 stamp also created by Rosing and Slania (Fig. 6). It commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of Godthaab (today’s Nuuk), the Greenlandic capital. The design features Hans Egede, a drummer, Danish soldiers and a Greenlandic audience at the foundation ceremony. Today there is a lively debate in Greenland about Hans Egede and the introduction of Christianity. Was this beneficial for the Greenlandic people or did his actions destroy the indigenous people’s traditional culture and religious beliefs? I suppose these are subjects discussed in Australia as well. Interestingly

enough, POST Greenland has issued stamps featuring traditional religion such as the Drum Dance player shown in Fig. 7. This stamp was released in 1961. Regardless of how we view Hans Egede from a historic perspective, it is hard not to recognise his importance for the development of Greenland from his arrival in 1721 until the present time. To end this story I should like to point out that Hans Egede had considerable artistic talents which is evident from a stamp (Fig. 8) issued 1976. The arm-wrestling design is based on a drawing made by Egede ca 1730. Arm-wrestling apparently was a popular Greenlandic sport at the time. The denomination is 1 krone with a surcharge of 20 ore going to the Greenlandic Sports Federation. Greenland is a small nation of some 57.000 people and it is a self-governing part of Denmark. At some time in the future, many Greenlanders hope to achieve independence very much like Iceland which once was a Danish colony. Required submission format Advertisements should be supplied in digital format (on disk or via email). Advertisements should be provided as high resolution PDF files, with all fonts embedded. All images must be scanned at 300dpi resolution and sent as separate files, and must not be compressed by jpeg below medium quality. Price lists must be provided in Excel format.
