New Zealand 1985 “CRISTMAS” spelling error PAIR! -
A very interesting Story. These stamps were printed in the Netherlands, by the well-known and widely used Enschedé Security Stamp Printers, in Haarlem. The stamps were all printed and perforated and ready to go, when someone noticed that the word CHRISTMAS had been added and approved by the Dutch printers, and NZ Post, and mis-spelled “CRISTMAS” (with missing H!) and not CHRISTMAS spelling. I understand that is more in keeping with the European/Dutch spelling, so no-one noticed - not sure, but it got right through to the proofs being all signed off on, and being printed and perforated, and darn near issued nationally. The stamps were rapidly re-printed for then heavy NZ Christmas mail useage, and the originals were SUPPOSED to be destroyed. A very few pairs leaked out somewhere, and I bought them near 40 years ago, and offered them in the local magazine for $A500 the pair, and they sold fast. The same original paper, gum, and perfs as the issued stamps of course. One client I sold these to has recently passed away, and I bought them back this month from the Estate. Stamps in the News - Globally! Heading for a Gross profit
Reported at www.smithsonianmag.com A 1-cent USA postage stamp from 1868 is up for auction and could fetch up to $5 million. A New York auction house is selling what it calls “America’s Most Valuable Postage Stamp”—a 1-cent “Z-grill” stamp from 1868 featuring Benjamin Franklin. It’s one of only two of its kind known to exist. The auction will mark the first time the rare stamp is up for sale in 26 years. It’s rarity comes from what philatelists call a “Z-grill” Z-grill stamps are among the most coveted for collectors. A grill is a type of mark impressed into a postage stamp invented in 1867 to prevent reuse. The Z-grill, named after its zig-zag pattern, is the rarest of the grill shapes. Owning any Z-grill is no small feat, let alone a 1-cent Z-grill. The U.S. Post Office stopped issuing the stamps in the early 1870s and very few are known to still exist. “Most of [the Z-grill stamps] were 2-cent and 12-cent stamps. Some were 3-cent stamps. And very, very few were 1-cent, 10-cent and 15-cent stamps,” explains Scott Trepel, the president of Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, the auction house. The only other known surviving copy of the 1-cent Z-grill stamp is at the New York Public Library, which received the stamp as a donation in 1925. The stamp is the most-valued piece of what some industry observers have called the most complete and significant collection of American postage stamps ever assembled, one that was built over decades by the “Bond King”, Bill Gross. Gross says he was introduced to philately as a child, when his mother gave him a stamp album that she believed would help him pay for college. While those stamps proved to be essentially worthless, Gross wanted to show that stamps could be a good investment and went on to become one of the most prolific 21st-century stamp collectors. Gross came to acquire the stamp in 2005 when Shreve, acting as his representative, traded with the Mystic Stamp Company for it by bartering a plate block of Inverted Jennys worth $2,970,000. According to the auction house, it was known as the “Great6 - Stamp News
est Stamp Swap of All Time.” In collecting the 1-cent Z-grill, Gross had what is known as a “complete” U.S. stamp collection, becoming only the second person to do so. Since 2007, Gross has been selling off stamps from his international collection and in 2018, he began to sell the U.S. collection; he has given the proceeds of these sales to charity. The mogul claimed that “getting all of the rarest stamps took patience, but the chase was the fun part.” The 1-cent Z-grill stamp will go on sale on June 14, along with 99 other top stamps in Gross’ collection. The entire collection is expected to generate between $15 million and $20 million.

and an overall neoart-deco look. “This stamp carries the colours of Paris 2024 and will fully contribute to opening up the Games. We can’t wait to see it travel in France and around the world,” said the President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee. La Poste Group issued its first official Olympic stamp in 1924, when Paris hosted the eighth Summer Olympic Games. Subsequent Olympic events in France, such as the Grenoble Winter Olympics in 1968 and the Albertville Winter Olympics in 1992, also saw the release of Olympic stamps by La Poste. Following the successful bid of Paris to host the 2024 Summer Olympics in 2017, La Poste released a special stamp which included the signature of the bid committee, “Come and share”, its logo and image of the Grand Palais. 800,000 copies of the new stamps will be issued and go on sale on March 29.

Ethio Post has dedicated a series of new postage stamps in honour of the legendary Ethiopian athlete Derartu Tulu. The postage stamps were released on the same day the two-time Olympic gold medallist celebrated her 53 birthday on March 21, 2024. “Today, we pay homage to a trailblazer who not only ran her way into history but also left indelible footprints on the hearts of millions,” Ethio Post announced. ever, there were some more unusual hazards including magpie and other bird attaches, insect nests in letterboxes and roped off driveways. Across the country, New South Wales had the highest number of logged hazards throughout the year at over 20,000, followed by Victoria with nearly 19,000. In the other states and territories, Queensland logged over 16,000 hazards, South Australia logged over 13,000, Western Australia had over 10,000, Tasmania logged 1,300, the Australian Capital Territory logged over 900 and the Northern Territory logged over 500 hazards. The digital hazard tool was rolled out 12 months ago to help reduce incidents and injury to posties, allowing them to immediately digitally log a hazard. The next time they, or any other postie, approach a pre-logged location they will receive a warning notification on their device. An Australia Post spokesperson said, “Once a hazard is logged in the system we take the necessary steps to try and resolve it for our team.” In addition to the hazard tool, Australia Post also uses video footage and sensors across its delivery fleet to help to reduce serious accidents as its delivery team takes to the streets each day. A report last year also revealed that a postie is injured by a third party on the roads at a rate of one a week.

One of the major dangers is the risk of robberies, especially ones in which the perpetrator has sought to obtain the mail carrier’s master key, which opens boxes containing mail. There were two incidents in Youngstown in 2023 in which mail carriers were robbed of their master key. Neither mail carrier was injured but the robberies are indicative of a problem which has been more pronounced in other areas, including Cleveland. According to a USPS news release, 412 USPS letter carriers were robbed on the job during its fiscal year 2022, while 305 incidents of carriers being robbed were reported in the first half of fiscal year 2023 alone. According to the release, USPS and the Postal Inspection Service have made efforts to expand its Project Safe Delivery crime prevention initiative. The goal of the project is to “protect postal employees and facilities, prevent mail and package theft, and enforce the law against individuals who perpetrate crimes against postal employees or engage in mail and package theft.” To help achieve this goal, the postal service is installing 12,000 high-security blue collection boxes across the United States; and replacing 49,000 “antiquated” arrow locks with electronic locks.
Selling the farm in India

When was the last time farmers featured in an Indian postage stamp? In 1992, when the Department of Posts commemorated the silver jubilee of Haryana. The stamp showed a farmer and his wife in the foreground of power transmission lines, tap water supply, and a farmer driving a tractor in a field. After that farmers have featured only in the backdrop of stamps on political leaders and institutions such as the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics. Over the past two decades, agricultural products have featured on Indian stamps more often than producers. Farming -related stamps themes peaked in the 1980s but declined when agriculture was no longer among the priorities of the government. This is in contrast with the earlier decades, especially the period between the mid-1960s and early 1980s that witnessed a whole-of-government approach to agriculture, with the postal department playing a role in
building awareness at multiple levels. The conscious use of the postal system to promote the government’s agricultural policies began after Independence. A set of four commemorative stamps, including one featuring a farmer couple, was issued for the inauguration of the Republic on January 26, 1950. The sustained campaign to promote government policies began on January 26, 1955, when the government issued the second definitive series comprising 18 stamps on industry, rare earths, agriculture and multipurpose projects, health, cottage industry, and transport and communication to canvass support for the Second Five-Year Plan (1956-61) a year ahead of its launch. The food shortages of the mid-1960s seriously challenged the sense of security of the nation. The government was forced to reconsider the dependence on imports that threatened progress. The government set a target of raising foodgrain output by 30 million tonnes between 1967 and 1971 to ease supply-side pressure. At the same time, it also promoted family planning to address the demand side of the problem. This marked the beginning of a sustained campaign to promote the expansion of agricultural output and population control that lasted over three decades. The sixth definitive series titled “Agriculture and Rural Development” (1979-85) offered the most expansive statement of the government’s agricultural policy during the planning era. Stamps in the News - Globally! in this series suggest that the government was alert to, among other things, the need to diversify the food basket and shift to high value products. In addition to food grains, stamps of this series featured dairy farming, pisciculture, poultry, horticulture (cashew, apple, and orange), and non-food crops (hybrid cotton and rubber). But the new approach to agriculture required literate farmers, who had access to irrigation and new technology. The series, therefore, included stamps on Adult education, Minor irrigation, and Transfer of Technology (from lab to farms), respectively. Transformation of rural India was the ultimate objective of these initiatives, which featured in “Agriculture and Rural Development”, the last stamp of the sixth definitive series. The stamp showed a planned village with roads, tap water supply, television, sports arena, and mechanised agriculture symbolised by a man ploughing a field using a tractor. By the late 1990s, the postal campaign to promote the government’s agricultural policy—a campaign that ran for over three decades—came to an end. The retreat of the state, considerable improve-

ments in foodgrain output and foreign exchange reserves, and a drop in fertility explain the end of these three longstanding campaigns.

Spain has had a long running program of promoting its unique cuisine through stamps with the Gastronomy series highlighting reginal specialty dishes. In the last 6 years the series has focused on foodstuffs with Protected Designations of Origin status. The denomination of origin is a geographical indication used on a product that has a specific geographical origin, whose qualities, reputation and characteristics are essentially due to its place of origin. It is a seal that shows a link or cause-effect relationship between the specific characteristics of the product and the geographical environment of the production area. Pimentón de la Vera is the product obtained from the grinding of dried red bell pepper fruits dried with oak wood, by the vertical current drying system with a lower hearth, used in La Vera, using emery stone mills. Pimentón de la Vera is a product with a smoky, intense and penetrating flavour and aroma, due to this drying process. The Protected Designation of Origin “Cereza del Jerte” exclusively covers fresh table cherries originating from the area located in the northern regions of the province of Cáceres. This area has very specific and homogeneous geographical, physical, historical and cultural characteristics. The crop is grown on small terraced farms, located on the slopes located on shady or sunny slopes.

A new Chinese-language phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) platform named “darcula” has been targeting postal organizations in more than 100 countries, including the United States Postal Service (USPS). Researchers said in a March 27 post that the attacks use more than 20,000 phishing domains to trick victims into entering credentials and other sensitive information in the belief they are interacting with
legitimate postal organizations. The researchers said the “darcula” platform has been used for numerous high-profile phishing attacks over the last year, including messages received on Apple and Android devices in the United Kingdom, as well as package scams impersonating USPS in the United States. There have also been many attacks across the Middle East. “We found ‘darcula’ to be the most pervasive worldwide package scam operation we have seen,” said an industry authority. Darcula uses Rich Communication Services (RCS) — the default SMS app provided on many Android devices enabling the attackers bypass SMS firewalls. RCS has end-to-end encryption, offering users the sense of a more secure and private messaging experience but it’s a tremendous benefit for malicious actors in that it enhances the agility and adaptability of phishing campaigns, making them more effective against evolvin security measures. It also lowers the technical barrier for new malicious actors, enabling even those with limited skills to conduct sophisticated attacks seamlessly making it a persistent and adaptable threat in the cybersecurity ecosystem.

cut costs and greenhouse emissions, comes after Germany’s coalition government moved to relax rules governing delivery times, meaning that customers will now have to wait longer for letters. The very last aircraft carrying domestic mail took off from Berlin and flew to the southwestern city of Stuttgart early on Thursday morning, the German dpa news agency said. Other planes previously departed from Hannover, Munich and Stuttgart, with the altogether six aircraft carrying around 1.5 million letters weighing 53 metric tons (58.5 US tons), according to dpa. Deutsche Post says that transporting letters by land instead of by air will reduce CO2 emissions per letter by about 80%. Deutsche Post will, however, still rely on air transport for letters destined for abroad. That mail will be transported in the hold on regular passenger flights.

cient. The company plans to lay off 700 posties over the next five years and pass their duties to contracted courier drivers. NZ Post last year said it would “trial a whole range of things” to figure out what worked best in response to declining mail volumes. Twenty years ago, New Zealanders sent more than one billion mail items a year - but this has decreased dramatically to around 220 million with further decreases predicted. The postal workers union has responded arguing van delivery would be slowed down because it’s much quicker to go along the footpath on an electric bike with the posties holding onto mail and small packets and parcels than to deliver by petrol powered vans having to find parking spots. It also claims NZ Post’s plan to replace postal workers with contractors violates the State Owned Enterprises Act.
Heroic posties honoured
Reported at www.atlasobscura.com The disaster on the RMS Titanic is forever linked to Southampton—the British port city where the ship launched on April 10, 1912. Graves and memorials are dotted all over the city. All told, over 500 Southhampton households lost at least one family member from the wreck. This memorial is dedicated to five people lost in the disaster, whose role onboard was tied directly to the ship’s title. The “RMS” in RMS Titanic stood for Royal Mail Ship. As well as people, the Titanic was built to transport mail across the Atlantic. Mail officers onboard had crew quarters separate from the standard crew. On the night of the disaster, shortly after the Titanic struck the iceberg, the five mail officers, who were mid-birthday celebrations for postal clerk Oscar Woody, realized the mail room was flooding fast. They had over 3,000 sacks of mail onboard and the five men started to work hard to save the mail. One steward who was roped in to help gives us a

clue as to how the men attended their duties, testifying: “I urged them to leave their work. They shook their heads and continued at their work. It might have been an inrush of water later that cut off their escape, or it may have been the explosion. I saw them no more.” The five postal officers wouldn’t survive the disaster. They are honoured in the Southampton Civic Centre with one of the most unique memorials to the disaster: a piece of the Titanic itself. The Harland and Wolff shipyard, which built the Titanic, donated a spare propeller to be recast to make this memorial.
More than 1,500 people died after the Titanic hit an iceberg off the southeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Among them were the five postal clerks: U.K. citizens James Williamson and Jago Smith and U.S. citizens William Gwinn, John March, and Oscar Woody. Not everyone would stand by their posts in the face of death, but in the early hours of April 15th, these men did right until the end.

Why Collect Postal History? Postal history collecting, that is commercial covers, parcel tags and labels, postcards etc., has been gaining in popularity over the past 30 to 40 years. The late Rodney Perry in his series over many years in this magazine sought to educate and enthuse readers to consider this fascinating area of philately. I hope that I can re-ignite some of that enthusiasm in the following pages. The reason? As collectors find that they have gone as far as they can with their chosen country or theme in stamps, postal history opens up a whole new field of collecting interest. You can collect multiple areas or just one or two including solo use covers, rates, usages, registered, express mail etc. Then of course there are postmarks and instructional markings. Every cover is of course unique in it’s own way. A fun and not too expensive exercise to do, at least in the early stages, would be to collect as many solo use covers as you can find of just the domestic letter rate for your chosen country/area. Perhaps to try and get all of the sheet stamp as solo usages of Australia for the decimal period alone would be a challenge, the cost could even be as low as $1 a cover! There really are a myriad of ideas, and I will illustrate some examples in these pages. My own interest by the way is ín the commercial mails of Pitcairn Island. Douglas Wilkie (1909 – 10 April 2002) was a respected columnist for The Sun News-Pictorial (Australia). The son of travelling Shakespearean actors Allan Wilkie and Frediswyde Hunter-Watts, he began his
newspaper career as a copy boy with the Hobart Mercury. This period was followed by Sir Keith Murdoch appointing him as Geelong correspondent for The Herald. Wilkie is best remembered for his political commentary for The Sun News-Pictorial for which he wrote during 1946–1986. Philip C. Horton was a professor of public diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy before his retirement in 1977. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was a graduate of Princeton. He taught English at Harvard and served as curator of poetry at Harvard’s Widener Library from 1937 to 1942. During World War II he served in the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, London, Germany and Paris. In 1946 he became the first station chief in Paris of the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1947 he joined Time magazine as an associate editor and two years later left for The Reporter, where he became executive editor, a post he held until the magazine ceased publication in 1969. Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for May 2024. This month’s column looks at Australia Post’s new ‘local’ postal cards, new issues and the Commonwealth’s reuse of unsold reply postal cards in 1917. Community Hub @ Post in Orange Postal Cards Reports from Australia Post suggest that the Localised Postal Card program previously described in this column has ended. Under this program selected official post offices and all LPOs had the opportunity to have postal cards produced with their office name and postcode and a picture of their choice printed on the reverse. Cards ordered by LPOs were (in general) only available at the LPO that ordered the card. Hundreds of cards were produced with many documented in the Postal Stationery Collector, however, the exact number will most likely never be known. I would be happy to learn of any cards you come across. Australia Post, however, appears to have commenced a new program of local postal cards. Last year they announced the establishment of Community Hubs @ Post: These were billed as Send smart and shop local with Australia Post reimagined. Postal Stationery Burnie (Tasmania) and Noosa Heads (Queensland) that will be opening soon. Shared Tables Postal Cards Four postal cards on the theme ‘the Shared Table’ were issued on 12 March 2024. The cards were issued in the small format and sold as a set for $7.80. Although Australia historically had a relatively bland cuisine, from about the 1960s this began to change as a result of post-war immigration. In a country as diverse as modern Australia, it is of little surprise that a wide range of cuisines have come to influence our diets. The Shared Table postal card issue highlights culinary influences that have their origins in cultures of the Mediterranean, Asia, Middle East and Indian Subcontinent. New Zealand Making Games Postal Cards The New Zealand Making Games - A Developing Industry postal card issue (Figures 6-7) celebrates recent innovations and successes in Aotearoa New Zealand’s game development industry. The issue comprised five $3.30 postal cards designed by Chris Jones, Graphetti, Wellington and were issued on 6 March 2024. Greenland : Tattoo Art Series I, II & III Greenland released a third set of two stamps featuring traditional tattoos on 29 February 2024. Traditional Inuit tattoos are gaining greater notoriety in Greenland. In 2022 the first set in a series on Tattoo art in Greenland was launched. The third part of the series, features a stamp debut for two younger artists, Ujammiugaq Møller and Mimi Josefsen. The stamps are printed in offset, and an attractive souvenir sheet is also available from Tuass Greenland at www.stamps.gl. Face value / post office price: 38 DKK. Date of issue: 29th February 2024 The second set of two stamps was issued in 2022. Maya Sialuk Jacobsen created two eyecatching designs for the theme ‘Tattoo Art in Greenland’. Date of issue: 30th May 2023 Greenlandic tattoo art has its roots in Inuit culture. In recent years, Greenlandic tattoos have been experiencing a renaissance, especially among young people who use the tattoos as cultural markers. Visual artist and tattooist Paninnguaq Lind Jensen started the series with two beautiful stamps. They are printed in offset and issued both as a set and as an attractive souvenir sheet. philatelic news 60th Anniversary of the Tristan Volcanic Eruption Part 3 – Resettlement The determination of most Tristan islanders to return home from their enforced volcanic evacuation in October 1961 began in earnest on 13th April 1962 when islanders Adam Swain and Joe Glass returned to England from the Royal Society Expedition declaring that the island was fit for habitation. It proved a tricky exercise to plan and carry out resettlement. This began when on 9th August 1962 twelve men of the Resettlement Survey Party left Southampton Docks aboard the Stirling Castle, arriving on Tristan aboard the Tristania 8th September 1962. Although officially this was a survey trip, make no doubt that these ten men were never going to return to England – resettlement of Tristan began on that day. HMS Puma crew blasted a road from Garden Gate, the only usable beach for landings now that both Big and Little Beach had been destroyed by lava. Slowly the village was restored to some sort of order. Back in England pressure grew on the British Government to facilitate a resettlement of the island, but there were doubters on both sides. On Sunday 2nd December representatives from the Colonial Office arrived unannounced in Tristan Close to conduct their secret ballot. The vote in favour of going back was 148, with five voting to remain. Now return of the refugees was a certainty. The Advance Party of 51 islanders led by Willie Repetto oddly sailed from Tilbury aboard RMS Amazon on 17th March 1963, transferring to MV Boissevain at Rio de Janeiro and arriving on Tristan on 9th April, rather than using the conventional Southampton-Cape Town route. Also on board was Administrator Peter Day, returning to lead the effort to re-build crucial harbour and factory infrastructure on which a successful resettlement would depend. The main Resettlement Party of 198 islanders travelled direct from Southampton with 200 tonnes of cargo to Tristan aboard the Danish ferry Bornholm, departing on 24th October and arriving in triumph at Tristan on Sunday 10th November 1963. The islanders had made it home against the odds, and nothing could stop them. There were many early problems before a viable economy and a good standard of living was established. Poor weather meant the Bornholm took eleven days to offload; one family refused to stay in their lava-damaged home and returned to England; potato crops were poor; savings dwindled as earnings were low before commercial fishing operations resumed in 1966. 35 islanders left Tristan for the UK in April 1966, so, out of the 280 Tristan islanders who could have returned home in 1963, 66 (24%) remained in the UK or had subsequently moved back. Whilst many of the 35 returned to Tristan, these facts highlight the human side of the resettlement – there was uncertainty

about what was best for families and the future of their young people. Greetings from Great Britain Viking Britain…. and more Hello, welcome to a new series from me, Michael Dodd of cddstamps. Over the coming months I will be writing about some GB issues, new releases and some not so new but with a perspective on similar themed issues, their presentation on First Day Covers and how the covers and issues compare. Hopefully you will find this approach to seeing and reading about GB stamps interesting. Of course I welcome feedback and also ideas for future articles. In February 2024 Royal Mail released a new series of stamps: Viking Britain. A series of eight stamps which I for one find enjoyable to see and interesting to read about. I hope you find this brief review of a few Royal Mail stamp issues and their presentation on GB First Day Covers interesting. I will start with a very brief time line on Brit-
ish history which of course goes back many years, some suggest a million years. The periods over more recent years can be grouped as the Neolithic Period, the Bronze Age, The Iron Age, Roman Britain, Anglo Saxon Britain, Norman Britain and then the Plantagenets and Kings and Queens of the last say 700 or so years. You might already recognise some themes that Royal Mail have used for stamp issues. Obviously the Kings and Queens issues, and then Roman Britain, and one other you might not be so familiar with, Ancient Britain. I will keep to the Viking Britain, Roman Britain and Ancient Britain issues as I think they form a nice trio. The Viking Britain issue is described by Royal Mail as: “In the late 8th century, the first Viking raiders arrived on our shores in a maelstrom of fire

and steel, setting in motion a period of profound transformation that would eventually unite an island of independent kingdoms into the country we know today. Royal Mail is honouring the enduring legacy of Vikings in Britain with a new First Day Cover to coincide with the 40th anniversary of York’s world-renowned JORVIK Viking Centre. Fig 4 logical importance across the country”. Yes, somewhat flamboyant language, editorial prerogative perhaps, but it sets the scene for the stamps in the issue. I won’t repeat everything as you can easily read about each stamp from the Royal Mail publicity material on their website, https://shop.royalmail.com/viking-britain-stamp-set, but will start by showing two First Day Covers with the stamps issued. The first is the Royal Mail cover. A pleasing design and one that easily accommodates the eight stamps. (Fig 1) The second cover is another I came across in my readings. A rather different idea but one I thought I would show. It combines the new Viking Britain stamps with those issued in 1993 for the first in the Royal Mail Roman Britain issue. (Fig 2) The next cover in the trio goes back to June 2020 when Royal Mail released their second Roman Britain issue. Again eight stamps and an issue that 48 - Stamp News
shows photographs of landmarks and artefacts to celebrate Roman life and culture in Britain. For an interesting read I suggest a visit to one of my favourite philatelic bloggers and philatelists: https://blog. norphil.co.uk/2020/06/roman-britain-stamp-issue-18june-2020.html (Fig 3) If by now these have not whetted your appetite to read more about the Viking and Roman periods in British History, well I am not sure what will. I suppose we all find different things interesting but this theme is one that has me reading more and more as I research materials for this article. Prior to 2020 there was another Royal Mail issue titled Ancient Britain. A 2017 issue of eight stamps which included illustrations to some well-known ancient sites and artefacts from British history across a timeline of thousands of years. These illustrations were cleverly done by the illustrator/designer Rebecca Strickson. Look carefully at the stamps and you

Fig 5 will see the illustrations. Some of the places you may know, including the Skara Brae Village in the Orkney Islands, the Avebury Stone Circles which were built in the Neolithic period roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, and the Maiden Castle Hill Fort in Dorset which is an Iron Age hill fort built around 1800 BC near Dorchester. This First Day Cover showing the eight stamps is rather remarkable, don’t you think? Yes the stones are of the Avebury Stone Circle. (Fig 4) In my humble view this Cover is perhaps one of the best designs I have seen in a long time. This one is a Buckingham cover. My final Cover shows the first Roman Britain issue, released by Royal Mail in 1993 as I mentioned earlier. Just the stamps this time as we saw in Fig 2 but on a privately produced Cover. (Fig 5) If one were to start a thematic collection perhaps
The Ages of Britain might be an interesting choice? Royal Mail have made a good start by issuing many interesting stamps over the years and there are certainly a few more “Ages” one might think are yet to be considered. Perhaps like me you have read about a new area of philatelic interest, called Context Philately. A collecting theme one might say that goes beyond collecting stamps, based for example on a country or purely a theme, but on the historical and cultural context surrounding the stamps. I think these certainly fall into that category. I welcome feedback on this piece and also topics for future articles. A PHILATELIC SERIAL STORY Many weekly magazines offer their readers novels in the form of serial stories. One or two consecutive chapters are printed each week until the end of the novel. Many daily newspapers also provide their younger readers with comic strips which tell long stories over several weeks. Readers need to be equipped with a lot of patience and it is obviously most important not to miss a single issue of the magazine or newspaper. Many postal services have used similar methods to feature an important theme on postage stamps. In 1962, the Swedish Post Office began annual issues of stamps featuring the winners of
the Nobel prizes of sixty years ago. This series went on for years and it taught us a lot about achievements in science and medicine not forgetting some of the most important names in literary history. Sadly, this series of annual stamps was abandoned many years ago. But this story is not about Nobel Prize winners but about a saint. Saint Dévote is the patron saint of Monaco and it doesn’t take long for visitors to the tiny principality to discover her importance in local life and traditions. Recently a fortuitous purchase of twelve different stamps allows me to tell the story of Dévote.

Christer Brunström They were issued over a period of six years with two new additions each year from 1987 until 1992. The two last stamps were different in size and design but they still belong to this philatelic serial story. It is not that common that stamps include a lot of descriptive text but this was the case with the ten first stamps in our serial story. The text is located to the right of each stamp. It explains the significance of the picture. Joined together all the twelve stamps tell the story of the life of a young woman who died for her faith and they also explain why she has become the principality’s

patron saint. The first stamp issued in 1987 features the artist’s idea of depicting Dévote. According to the wording on the stamp, she was born in Quercio in 283 and she was martyred in Mariana on the island of Corsica, at the time a Roman colony. Apart from the portrait of the saint, the design includes a bird (which can be found on all twelve stamps but more about this later). The second value of the 1987 issue (Fig. 1) shows Dévote along with her “nanny” who told the young girl about the Christian faith. We don’t really know anything about the nanny but as the

A PHILATELIC SERIAL STORY story unveils it becomes obvious that she was of paramount importance for the young girl. The story about Dévote had thus begun but all those who wanted to find out what happened next would have to wait twelve months for the next part. In late 1988 there were two new stamps. The first one tells us about the arrival of Barbarus, Corsica’s new Roman governor. One of his first decisions was to order a ceremony thanking the Roman gods for his safe arrival. The entire population of the island was expected to take part in the celebrations and those who refused would be punished. Dévote was certainly aware of the danger but she did not want to abandon her Christian faith. She sought protection in the home of Roman senator Eutychius. The 5-franc value (Fig. 2) shows Dévote and the senator. He does not share her Christian faith but he treats her with respect. After another year-long wait two new stamps were added to our philatelic serial. Eutychius refused to hand over the young woman to Barbarus. The governor was angry and somehow managed to kill the senator by poisoning his drink. The stamp features the scene when Dévote discovers the dead body of her protector (Fig. 3). Following the death of her protector, Dévote is arrested and taken to the governor. She blatantly refuses to worship the many Roman deities and the furious Barbarus condemns her to a punishment of torture. The stamp shows the governor and Dévote. What happened next? Those who bought the new stamps each year once again had to wait for the next installment in the story. On the first stamp of the 1990 issue the young woman is the subject of the torture ordered by Barbarus. Despite all the pain, Dévote refuses to abandon her faith. Finally the young woman succumbs to the torture. This is believed to have happened in 304. On the second stamp of the 1990 pair (Fig. 4) some fishermen have managed to get hold of the young woman’s body and they placed it in their 52 - Stamp News
boat to take it away for a Christian burial. Travelling at sea can sometimes be extremely dangerous in adverse weather conditions. This is exactly what happens to the fishermen and their boat on the first stamp of the 1991 set of two. The storm is terrible and the sailors soon are completely lost and they have no idea of how to reach a safe harbour. On the second stamp (Fig. 5) rescue arrives in the form of a white pigeon which shows the oarsman how to steer his boat to a safe anchorage in a calm bay in Hercule-Monecus, today’s Monaco. Dévote can now be given a Christian burial. On the site there is now a church consecrated to Saint Dévote. The ten stamps issued during a five-year period appear to have completed the story but there was more in 1992. These two additional stamps are larger in size using designs which are entirely different from the first ten ones. Saint Dévote is by far the most popular saint in Monaco and she is celebrated in late January each year by a series of activities many of which take place in the church which was built near the harbour. The church, Église de Sainte Dévote, can be seen on the 6-franc value (Fig. 6). As part of the celebrations, a symbolic boat is burnt on the 26th of January attracting thousands of spectators each year. Another rather spectacular event takes place on the following day. After the mass in the cathedral a procession of priests, government officials and members of the princely family makes its way through the streets of Monaco carrying the shrine containing the relics of the saint. This is the design of the twelfth and last stamp of our philatelic serial story. The 6-year philatelic serial story had two purposes. First of all it wanted to present the life of Saint Dévote but the twelve stamps were also issued to publicise the important work of the Red Cross and its mission to aid suffering people wherever they might be.
