philatelic news
An Australian Ai Ron Lee, well known in philatelic circles for many years, has written a four volume history of Australian Airmails from the beginning of flying to the end of World War II and the reestablishment of the Australia/ England air service. This has been a life long project. The books are designed for easy reference with events in chronological order and include many maps and photographs. As with most branches of history, aerophilately has its myths. As an example we have all accepted, even to the extent of issuing stamps commemorating the event, that Guillaux flew the first airmail in Australia. The Story of Australia’s Overseas Airmail, clearly shows that Guillaux flew no such mail.
8 - Stamp News
Guillaux’s Melbourne to Sydney flight took place just four years after the first aeroplane was flown in Australia. This flight, which was in the air for only a few minutes, was not easy. The Post Office has always taken very seriously its responsibility to safely and efficiently carry the Kings or Queen’s mail. There is no way in 1914 it would have entrusted the mail to the fragile, unreliable, primitive aircraft which had little range, could only carry a small load and were subjected to the vagaries of the weather. The Post Office did not initiate the carrying of mail by air at that time. All mail between Melbourne and Sydney was carried by train in much less time than
n Airmail History Guillaux precariously flew the distance. The Post Office had accepted a proposal from early aviators to fly souvenir postcards to promote and fund their flying. Guillaux carried only promotional souvenirs – not mail. The first airmail was not carried until after World War I when aircraft design and performance had improved dramatically. Even then the Post Office only reluctantly agreed to a request for an experimental airmail. The series of four books is of interest not only to those who collect overseas airmail but also to those interested in the development of trunk air routes in Australia. These books include maps showing the
air routes operating at any particular time. There is also information on the design of stamps of the period. Flight covers, both commercial and philatelic, can tell us so much. The series is essential reading to those who wish to understand more about both the philatelic and commercial items in their collections. In this magazine on page 47 is an advertisement with details of a prepublication offer for Book 1 : The Beginning of the Australia/England Service via India to 1934. The other three volumes will be offered at three monthly intervals during 2022.

Stamps in the News - Globally! Tiger tale fail in China
Reported at www.globaltimes.cn A set of zodiac stamps for the Year of the Tiger featuring a tiger peering into the distance and a mother tiger accompanying her two babies have sparked heated discussions online in China. Many claim that the images fail to fully demonstrate tigers strength and energy of exorcising evil, conveying Chinese people’s hopes for a year of bravery, peace and prosperity under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. The two stamps were issued by the China Post in January, marking the 42nd consecutive year since it issued the first set of zodiac stamps in 1980. The first one,”Guoyun Changlong,” references national fortune and prosperity. The stamp depicts a majestic tiger peering into the distance. The second one, “Huyun Jixiang” references good luck and shows a gentle mother tiger tending two cubs. However, many on social media have claimed that the tiger on the first stamp “looks sad” as it frowns and seems sick. Some said the two baby tigers also look unhappy and lacking enthusiasm. Artist, Feng Dazhong responded in a media in-

terview. “Animals also have happiness and sorrow, so the painting of the tiger needs to break the code, break through its animal nature to convey a spiritual emotion. Paying attention to portraying the spirits of the tiger also coincides with the cultural connotation of the zodiac tiger.” The Chinese Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is celebrated at the second new moon following the Winter Solstice. This festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of a long-awaited spring. According to the Chinese Zodiac, which is represented by 12 animals to record the lunar years and reflects people’s attributes, 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. The zodiac sign Tiger is a symbol of exorcising evils and bravery and many Chinese kids wear clothing with a tiger image of for good luck. The Chinese Zodiac dates back to the Qin Dynasty over 2,000 years ago and is rooted in a system of animal worship.

An Post has unveiled two new stamps to celebrate the centenary of the publication of James Joyce’s celebrated book, Ulysses. Regarded as one of the greatest and most influential pieces of modernist literature, Ulysses was initially published as a series of stories in an American journal. It was first published as a complete novel on 2 February 1922, James Joyce’s 40th birthday. The book chronicles a single day (16 June 1904 – now celebrated as Bloomsday) in the lives of Stephen Dedalus along with husband-and-wife Leopold and Molly Bloom as they meander through the streets of Dublin. The stamp design is intentionally unorthodox, challenging, and unexpected, as well as modernist – exactly what you would expect from Ulysses.

Stamps in the News - Globally! Britain salutes the Stones Reported at www.reuters.com
The Rolling Stones are being honoured on new British stamps, with a dedicated set featuring their performances worldwide as the legendary rock band marks their 60th anniversary this year. Eight stamps feature pictures of lead singer Mick Jagger, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood and late drummer Charlie Watts performing at different concerts around the world: from London’s Hyde Park in July 1969 to New Jersey in August 2019. The other four stamps are presented in a miniature sheet and feature two images of the band all together, and two of posters for their global tours. Watts died last year, aged 80. “Few bands in the history of rock have managed to carve out a career as rich and expansive as that of the Rolling Stones,” a Royal Mail spokesman said. Formed in 1962, the Rolling Stones are one of the world’s most successful and long-lived rock bands, selling an estimated more than 240 million records worldwide and picking up numerous awards, including three Grammys, along the way. They are the fourth music group to have a dedicated Royal Mail stamp issue, following in the footsteps of The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Queen.

British South Atlantic territories salute Shackleton Reported at https://en.mercopress.com
To mark 100 years since the death of Sir Ernest Shackleton, South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, the British Antarctic Territory and the Falkland Islands, have joined together to release a series of stamps celebrating his life and achievements. Shackleton rose to fame in 1915 when his vessel, the Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and sank. Against all the odds, Shackleton succeeded in getting all his men back to safety, a tale of resolve and selfless leadership that is celebrated as one of the greatest stories of human endeavour.

Margo Campbell don, with a crew comprising eight shipmates from the famous Endurance Expedition. After arriving at the quiet waters of King Edward Cove in South Georgia, Shackleton unexpectedly died in the early hours of the morning on the 5th January 1922. His final diary entry reads: ‘A wonderful evening. In the darkening twilight I saw a lone star hover, gem-like above the bay.’ Shackleton was buried on the 5 of March at the whaling station, Grytviken, a ceremony attended by the managers of the five stations on South Georgia and a hundred whalers and seamen.
Shackleton led three major expeditions during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His first was in 1901, on the Antarctic expedition ship Discovery. Led by British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott, Shackleton and Edward Wilson trekked in pursuit for the South Pole in extremely difficult conditions. They got closer to the Pole than anyone previously. In 1908, Shackleton returned to the Antarctic as the leader of his own expedition, on the ship Nimrod. They made many important scientific and geographical discoveries and set a new record by getting even closer to the South Pole. He was knighted on his return to Britain. The race for the South Pole ended in 1911 with Amundsen’s conquest and in 1914 Shackleton made his third, now well-known expedition, with the ship Endurance. In 1921, Shackleton returned to the sub-Antarctic on the Shackleton-Rowett Antarctic Expedition. It was to be Shackleton’s fourth and final expedition. After the city of Beijing announced its first reported case of the Omicron variant, Chinese officials alleged that the virus may have travelled to the city through a piece of mail from Canada—a claim experts say doesn’t add up. The chief medical adviser at Health Canada, calls the allegation “highly improbable.” “You would have to have virus on an object, it would have to survive through all of that transport and all of those circumstances. It would be highly unlikely that that could ever transmit COVID-19.” “Certainly, the experience in Canada, and I think throughout the world, has shown that the main mode of transmission really is through the air as opposed to a transfer from inanimate surfaces.” Recently, the Beijing Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) said that the city reported one case of the COVID-19 variant in a 26-year-old woman who had been isolating. An examination of the woman’s mail, revealed a letter sent on Jan. 7 from Canada, arriving in Beijing three days later via the United States and Hong Kong. Officials allege that piece of mail had traces of the Omicron variant. “The possibility of contracting the virus through foreign items cannot be ruled out,” the Beijing CDC said in a news release. On 14 January 2022, Croatian Post issued a new commemorative stamp for the 30th anniversary of the international recognition of the Republic of Croatia. For 30 years, Croatia has established itself internationally, becoming a member of NATO and the European Union and numerous international organisations, and has made a significant contribution to building world peace by participating in peacekeeping operations.

Hara is specifically accused of disposing of some 7,000 mail items in 13 plastic bags around a wooded area in the city. According to the police station, a man who was walking in the area spotted Hara dumping the bags and called police. An officer who rushed to the scene confirmed a large number of postcards and direct mail items in bags, and questioned the suspect. Hara was quoted as saying, “In around November last year, I began to bring home mail items I couldn’t deliver. This is the first time I disposed of them. Delivery work is not for me.”

digital world. Customers can scan the barcodes in the Royal Mail app and will eventually be able to watch videos, information about services, or birthday messages and other greetings from senders. At the moment, a video featuring Shaun the Sheep can be viewed. It is the first in a series of planned videos to be released during 2022 that will allow customers sending stamped mail to choose which one the recipient can see when they receive an item of mail. However, this is secondary to the barcode’s primary role, which will allow Royal Mail to accurately track and trace every piece of mail, The Express reports. Royal Mail is hoping the new stamps will help to cut down on mail that gets stolen or goes missing. The barcoded stamps will have a “digital twin” and the two will be connected by the Royal Mail app. The barcodes match the stamp colour and sit alongside the main body of the stamp, separated by a simulated perforation line. Along with the barcode, the stamps themselves are getting a makeover. A series of new colours are being introduced for First and Second class stamps for both regular and large letters. Regular First Class stamps come in purple, while Second Class are green. First Class Large Letter can be found in turquoise and a Second Class Large Letter is in dark green.

Royal Mail’s website explains: “The existing Machin design is retained with a barcode printed in matching colour alongside the main body of the stamp with a simulated perforation line.” Non-barcoded definitive and Christmas stamps will only remain valid for postage until January 2023 and will be demonetised thereafter. Norwegian Postal Service chalks up 375 Years Reported at www.adweek.com
Founded all the way back in January 1647, the Posten Norge (Norwegian Post) has seen massive changes in everything from the country’s rulers to methods of delivery. Celebrating a legacy so impactful requires taking a look back in time. This has been done via a short ad inspired by the
1994 movie, Forrest Gump. The video starts with a charmingly naïve postman sitting on a park bench next to an apparent stranger. A letter arrives at his feet and he observes, “My mama said life was like a postbox…you never know what’s inside.” Going back to the Norwegian Civil Wars, the postman notes that he delivered an infant who would one day become the first king of Norway. After wearing out his voice yelling “post,” he ultimately found himself a horn to announce the arrival of packages. An irritated person twists the horn into a curve, and the postman notes, “that’s actually how the posthorn got its appearance!” The spot speeds through the eras, with the postman noting that he’s been there for everything. Showing him delivering on foot, via horse, on boats and planes and beyond, he emphasizes that in order to stay relevant, one needs to constantly evolve. The ad concludes with a tagline “For 375 years, the most important thing has always been tomorrow.”

Ross Smith 1920 Vignette Reprints
With a history extending beyond a century, the celebrated and thoroughly researched 1920 Ross Smith vignette is a giant in both aerophilately and the broader Australian cinderella landscape. It has featured in several key philatelic texts and journals, including Tom Frommer’s feted Australian Air Mail Labels and Vignettes 1920 – 1960, and Bill Hornadge’s key Local Stamps of Australia. Given its already formidable presence in Australian philatelic literature, this article does not explore its history and features but rather considers some of the many cinderella labels that replicate the design of the famed 1920 vignette.

were applied to existing 1969 reprints and in what quantity. A complete 289mm x 459mm sheet of the reprinted vignette is illustrated in Figure 5. A total of 30 labels are illustrated in the sheet, with two cinderella sizes noted: 39mm x 45mm (18 labels: C1, C3, C5) 62mm x 45mm (12 labels: C2, C4) The size of the central FIRST AERIAL POST is consistent at 34mm x 40mm. Gutter strips are also present as well as striking top and bottom margins. Smaller 209mm x 167mm (3 x 2) sheets of this label also exist, with an example illustrated in Figure 6. The large margins and blank central horizontal strip allowed for the labels to be separated and distributed as minisheets. An imperforate variety of this sheet also exists, with iden-
The more common and available of the Ross Smith vignettes are illustrated across Figures 1 to 9. They collectively suggest at least two separate printings differentiated by the distribution and clarity of the blue colour. The earliest of these printings dates to 1969 where 30,000 copies were produced in England by Philart Productions Ltd. At the time, each was sold for 25 pence and were printed on cream paper with perforation 10. An example of the reprinted vignette (front and reverse) is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. Some of these vignettes were later reverse stamped with FACSIMILE to help distinguish from the original 1920 labels, as per Figure 4, with the front of this label illustrated in Figure 3. The originals are clearly distinguishable from replicas, howevAbove : Figs 1 & 2 er, as they show official CoA watermarks. It Below : Figs 3, 4 & 5 is unsure when these FACSIMILE handstamps

tical dimensions, as illustrated in Figure 7. The Ross Smith vignette reprints were retained by several collectors and philatelic dealers and applied to souvenir covers, over the years. One example, as illustrated in Figure 8, illustrates an example affixed to a 25 March 1984 Thomastown, Victoria postmarked cover. A part sheet of the replica label is illustrated in Figure 9. This item is fascinating as it presents absent horizontal perforations at its base resulting in the bottom five labels only perforated on three sides.
National Stamp Week 1976
An Adelaide printing company produced a version of the Ross Smith vignette, in 1976, with a print run of 1,000. These were issued as part of the celebrations marking National Stamp Week and the A.S.A. Stamp Company and C.B.A. Exhibition. Labels measure 56mm x 63mm and are printed inside a minisheet, with a 67mm x 75mm gold border. An example with a SPECIMEN overprint is illustrated in Figure 10. This label contains the additional text: NATIONAL STAMP WEEK 1976 / A.S.A. STAMP CO. & C.B.A. EXHIBITION 1976 ADELAIDE, S.A. As exemplified on the sheet, part of the 1976 exhibition was supported by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. These labels were printed in sheetlets of four (2 x 2) and it is unsure how many of these items were overprinted with SPECIMEN.
Arthur Bergen
Prolific cover creator, Mr Arthur Hugo Bergen, was Born in Wellington, New Zealand on 24 May 1914 and died in Adelaide, Australia, at 98 years of age, on 28 April 2013. He produced many 100s of different philatelic covers across nine different decades. Alongside these covers, Bergen also crafted many cinderella labels, often flight themed, and at least one of these from 1994 included a version of the Ross Smith vignette. Measuring 40mm x 46mm (inner rouletted label) and 80mm x 86mm (complete label), the blue and yellow vignette has a central SPECIMEN overprint. They were 40 - Stamp News

An example of the label on an 18 November 1994 cover is illustrated in Figure 11. The reverse of the cover with decorative handstamps and recognisable Arthur Bergen signature is illustrated in Figure 12. Each cover was also issued with a black and white insert outlining the original 1920 flight, as illustrated in Figure 13. Some of the inner labels were cut from their overall piece and applied to covers san border; an example is illustrated in Figure 14, and the cover presents a 24 October 1994 postmark.
40th Anniversary
Perhaps the earliest of the Ross Smith vignette reprints is illustrated, on cover, in Figure 15. Dating to 1959, the imperforate label is coloured bright blue and black. The label was issued to help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the 1919 Sir Ross Smith Flight, and covers bearing the la-
bel were flown on 12 November, 1959, from Hounslow to Melbourne. Many thanks to Martin Walker for providing a scan of the cover illustrated in Figure 15.
Re-Enactment Of First Flight
An imperforate Ross Smith reprint, in a distinct blue that spreads across the label, was released in 1986 to help commemorate the re-enactment of the first flight from English to Australia by Sir Ross Smith and Sir Keith Smith. The label measures 37mm x 41mm and features a distinct white border. It was printed in a sheetlet of six labels (3 x 2). An example of the label affixed toa 23 March 1985 Northfield postmarked cover is illustrated in Figure 16.
Collinridge Rivett
Joseph Collinridge Rivett was born in New Zealand on 7 January 1923 and died in New South Wales on 29 March 2008 at 85 years of age. At the time of his death, he had lived in Australia for nearly 80 years. Rivett, as he was more commonly known, was most famous for his FDCs and souvenir covers that he either handpainted ‘from scratch’, or converted and embellished established ones, many of both which were limited in numbers and hand Stamp News - 41

In addition to covers, Rivett is also known for his hand drawn and coloured cinderella labels, which many were also limited in numbers. Two of these labels that reproduce the Ross Smith vignette, likely produced in the 1970s, are illustrated in Figures 17 and 18, with the first black and white and the second featuring Rivett’s distinct hand colouring. Both labels also feature the text: Reproduction: The 1919 Ross Smith vignette. The labels each measure approximately 48mm x 57mm.
AEROPEX ‘94
AEROPEX ’94 was much celebrated in Australia, and the event heralded several cinderellas and other commemorative items acknowledging the philatelic exhibition.

One such souvenir, produced by the Australian Air Mail Society, is the minisheet of four labels illustrated in Figure 19. One of these cinderellas, the bottom left in the 2 x 2 arrangement, features a replica of the Ross Smith vignette. Text surrounding the 50mm x 67mm label reads: Souvenir of Aeropex ’94 / Australian Air Mail Society / Adelaide November 1994 / Stamp Design of Lt. GC Benson
Novelty Printing And Fameface
Novelty Printing, along with their trademark FAMEFACE logo, was advertised, initially, at philatelic exhibitions and craft fairs in 1994. The organisation produced many cinderella labels for clients, including Bill Hornadge. Novelty Printing then closed in 2000, ending a 6-year stint in the
modern Australian cinderella market. FameFace labels existed for several Australian philatelic exhibitions. One of these, celebrating AEROPEX ‘94, is illustrated in Figure 20. Measuring 42mm x 28mm and perforated 11 on all four sides, the multicoloured cinderella features the text: AUSTRALIA / 75th ANNIVERSARY SIR ROSS & SIR KEITH SMITH 1919 – 1994 / AEROPEX ADELAIDE 94 The 1994 label features a small replica of the Ross Smith vignette, measuring approximately 8mm x 9.5mm. It also features the signature FameFace text in top right corner. The label was produced in 278mm x 210mm sheets of 36 (6 x 6) with two decorative margins. A similarly designed label was then issued by Novelty Printing the year it ended, celebrating Congress (Adelaide) 2000, and an example is illustrated in Figure 22. It too measures 42mm x 28mm and is perforated 11 on all four sides. The cinderella is identical to the one in Figure 20 except for the slight variant text: AUSTRALIA / 80th ANNIVERSARY SIR ROSS & SIR KEITH SMITH 1919 – 1994 / LONDON – ADELAIDE / CONGRESS ADELAIDE 2000 A replica of the Congress 2000 label in the centre of a larger imperforate sheetlet is illustrated in Figure 23. The sheetlet features additional text on the famed Smith flight.
Conclusion
The landscape which includes reprints of the original famed Ross Smith vignette is rich and diverse. Labels have been produced featuring the image of the label for at least 60 years. Stamp News - 43
Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation This month we continue the focus on Exhibiting, details on the upcoming Canberra Stamp Exhibition along with an article to assist new collectors or those thinking of starting Stamp Collecting. Additionally we have updated information on previously advised State Council addresses. Stamp Collecting – the Basics If you have never collected stamps before, or have come into possession of a collection that you know nothing about, it is very easy to do yourself and your collection a disservice by not following some of the generally accepted basics: Organisation Sorting by country: Working out what you have and organising it can be very difficult, especially if you don’t know much about what you have. Organising material by country is usually the first and best step. If you don’t have a lot to sort through, grouping countries into categories such as British Commonwealth, Europe (non British Commonwealth) and then other countries is also a good idea. Chronological sorting: If you are able, sorting your material into chronological order – at least approximately – is also advisable, especially if you are thinking of getting your collection appraised by a dealer. A collection that is well organised is much easier for someone to assess quickly than one that is disorganised and has better items scattered where the dealer is not expecting to find them. A dealer will generally know what to look for in a collection when assessing its value and often there are key items or sets that make the difference between a common collection and one that may be worth considerably more. At least if things are sorted by country and time, you can quickly ascertain what you need and know what you already have. Catalogue Numbers and References: Referencing catalogue numbers is not essential in most cases and most collectors do not go to this length when storing their stamps. For larger col44 - Stamp News
lections however, making notes as to completeness can be very useful. Varieties and Special Items: To an experienced collector or dealer, spotting the importance of some items can be relatively easy. However in many cases, stamps are produced in various forms over a period of time. For example, Australia’s two earliest Commonwealth series of stamps the ‘map and kangaroo’ and George V heads, were issued over a some twenty years period. Over that time, various types of watermarked papers were used, as well as different perforation gauges (the number of holes used to separate stamps that make up a sheet). Let’s looks at a few examples form the first Commonwealth of Australia kangaroo and map stamps. The prized piece is any Australian collection is the £2 value. These were printed over a long period between 1913 and 1950. Those from the first printings in 1913 (on first watermark paper) are considerably rarer and more expensive than those printed after 1934 (on Crown C of A watermark paper). Some values in the kangaroo series were printed on only one type of paper. For example, the five pence value was only printed during 1913 to 1915 on first watermark paper. That makes it quite a collectible item as everyone who wants a set of all the kangaroo values needs to have this value in their collection. In addition to these varieties, early printing techniques were far from perfect with printing plates often requiring constant repairs or even complete replacement. This means that what might appear to be two identical stamps may not be at all. A trained eye, and often a magnifying glass, may be needed depending on the complexity of the particular stamps concerned. Building and Improving a Collection: Having said that there are no rules and that what you collect is entirely up to you, following some basics is always advisable if you ultimately want to make some sense of it all. Adhering to some basic
Russell Boylan
Philatelic Development Officer, APF
rules is especially important if you expect to sell your collection some day and only want to build it in order to achieve a return. Condition: The importance of condition remains one of the least appreciated aspects of collecting amongst novice collectors. Many smaller collections or accumulations are let down by their relatively poor condition. This is particularly sad when the few otherwise better items in the collection are amongst those in poorest condition in a collection. Ensuring you keep your stamps and other items in their best possible condition is not that difficult. Some of key things to remember are: Store them appropriately – appropriate storage is essential to minimising the likelihood of damage. Keeping your stamps flat, dry and protected will help ensure you achieve this. Various of types of albums and accessories are available and a stamp dealer can advise you on what is best for your particular needs. Do not handle your stamps with your hands – especially mint (unused) stamps where finger marks or other blemishes will show on the gum. User tweezers to handle stamps. Use of a second pair to gently lift up the strips on an album page is also a useful technique as the perforations on a stamp are most commonly damaged from poor attempts to fit them into albums. Avoid torn, bent or damaged stamps – stamps should also be clean and free of defects such as tears, bends or missing perforations. With used stamps, heavy cancellations or cancellations that cover the majority of the stamp should generally be avoided. Circular cancellations that do not cover more than one-quarter of the stamp are still preferred. Do not hinge unused stamps – mint or unused stamps should never be hinged as this will disturb the gum and leave a mark if removed. Whilst hinging was common place many years ago, it is not advisable. Hinging is generally safe for used stamps, provided good quality hinges are
used. Poor quality hinges that are prone to coming lose are a recipe for stamps disappearing mysteriously from your collection! Completeness: Many typical childhood collections lack inclusion of complete sets and are overpopulated by more common values. This is where use of catalogues can be particularly useful – to identify missing better items. Obviously the more complete a collection is, the less work a potential new owner needs to undertake, and hence the more appeal it has if being offered for sale. Repetition: Repetition of more common stamps, particularly if they are of mixed or generally poorer condition should be avoided – if for no other reason than they take up room in your albums at the expense of potentially new and better items. A regular clean out of unwanted spares is inevitably always worth the effort. Rarer Items: If and when you ever have your collection assessed for its value, the inclusion (or absence of) better and rare items is usually the first thing that will be noticed. Having multiples of more common stamps is never a good substitute for not having complete sets and better items. Common Misconceptions “Old is valuable” Value is determined by many factors of which age is but one. Even then, it does not always follow that old stamps are more valuable stamps. Many older stamps were in fact produced in quite large quantities and are not rare at all. Condition, scarcity and collectivity (demand) are greater determinants of value. Take the example illustrated, a stamp issued by Australia in 1951 and 1952. Although it is now over fifty years old, over 420 million were printed. An unused copy would probably cost you less than $1 to buy. “Used is less valuable” This may generally be true but is by no means Stamp News - 45
Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation true in all cases. Many older stamps, particularly high face value stamps which were not produced in large quantities, are certainly very collectible. Many older higher face value stamps were produced for overseas postage. Not only were not many often produced, but because they traveled large distances, rarely arrived in good condition. “Stamps should be removed from envelopes” Philately is concerned with much more than the simple stamp alone. Postal historians and other specialists interested in things like mail carried by air, mail sent or delivered to the world’s polar regions, and topical and thematic collectors look for much more. A complete envelope with stamp, cancel and often other instructional markings or postally applied cachet is often more important than the stamp alone. This is especially the case with envelopes that have been autographed, for example the pilot’s signature on an envelope has been carried on an inaugural air mail service. Getting Advice Philately is an incredibly diverse field of endeavor. The number of stamp issuing countries is growing all the time and the number of countries now growing in popularity to collectors is greater than ever before. In countries like Australia we are seeing demand for stamps and other philatelic material from countries such as China on a scale never seen before. The rapid growth of the internet and e-mail has also meant that collectors can now access dealers, auction houses and postal administrations in ways they never could before. What all this means is that the dynamics of stamp collecting are diverse and complex and keeping up with the latest trends is more than a full-time occupation. When seeking advice from other collectors, dealers or auction house, this must be remembered so always seek as many opinions are you can. Beginners,
I hope you enjoyed the first few stamps I showed in what will be a series of pieces about stamps from the British Commonwealth with a focus on what I think are interesting philatelic aspects about the stamps, and occasionally some trivia for further enjoyment. There is so much to enjoy from stamp collecting. I hope you will agree and enjoy this journey. Let’s start with Barbados. The Caribbean island was in the news quite a bit at the end of 2021 as I guess everyone knows, declaring its complete independence from Britain by removing Queen Elizabeth II as head of state and making Sandra Mason its president. This stamp (Fig 1) is from the1935 Silver Jubilee issue, often called the Omnibus issue and an issue which has some interesting varieties. It is always good to have a respectable catalogue with you so you can check any copy you have - to see if you have a pretty pricey stamp rather

than the basic issue. This is SG 243, but there is a copy SG 243m with a variety (flaw) known as the “bird” by turret variety with a 2021 SG catalogue price of £400 used – this, as the basic stamp used, is catalogued at £6.50. One more from Barbados (Fig 2). Does this age you? Not the year of the stamp but the value. Do you remember the farthing. This is SG 135 from the 1905 issue of this design showing the Seal of the Colony. This issue has the watermark Multiple Crown CA; the earlier issue in 1896, SG 105, has the Crown CA watermark. The CA standing for Crown Agents. Now, have a guess. Which stamp, say as a good quality used copy, has the higher catalog value? The 1896 issue or the 1905 issue? You would wrong if you thought the earlier printing - that is the older stamp - after all it was issued 125 years ago. It just goes to show that because a stamp is old it is not always worth a higher value. SG 105 is is catalogued at 40p used while the later issue is catalogued at £3.25. Radio in Australia Stamp collectors frequently have other hobbies and free-time occupations. This writer discovered the joys of listening to shortwave radio broadcasts way back in 1963. This particular hobby is known as DXing with D standing for distance and X for the unknown. That is at least one explanation which tells us what it is all about. It is also a collecting activity as you try to log as many stations and as many countries or territories as possible. When you have logged a new station you send off a report of reception with the necessary details about the reception (date, time and frequency), some information about reception quality and a few details from the programme heard to prove that you were actually listening to the station. Most radio stations used to confirm such reports by mailing a letter of verification or a QSL-card. QSL is “radio language” basically meaning that the report of reception is correct and that the details reported correspond with the programming broadcast. Over the years I have collected such QSL-cards from radio stations in more than 220 different countries
territories. These answers were all mailed to me by post providing me with countless items of genuine postal history. I feel that this fairly long introduction was necessary to introduce the subject of this column which deals with postage stamps telling the story of radio broadcasting in Australia. There really aren’t that many such stamps and I guess one album page will suffice to house most of them. The very first Australian radio station was called 2SB and its first programme was broadcast on 23 November 1923. This station still exists today as 2BL on 702 kHz AM in Sydney. In 1924, commercially financed stations were licensed along with the state-owned ones. In the early years, programming consisted news, weather reports, stock market reports and some music. Most stations were on the air for just a few hours a day. However, radio was an immediate success. In the 1930s, soap operas became very popular with listeners. With the introduction of television in 1956, the stations had to change their programming formats to attract more listeners.

Christer Brunström Listener polls indicated that the audience was young and many stations changed to a rock’n’roll format. On 21 November 1973 Australia issued a 7-cent stamp (Fig. 1) marking the 50th anniversary of broadcasting in the country. I first heard Radio Australia on shortwave in 1963 and I mailed a report to Melbourne. I received a nice QSL-card depicting a kookaburra. At the time Radio Australia was broadcasting to Europe and I tuned in fairly regularly. The overseas service was a branch of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC), Australia’s public-service broadcaster which was founded in 1932. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1982. The Australian Post Office issued two 27c se-tenant stamps (Fig. 2) marking the anniversary. One of the stamps shows a microphone and the other one the ABC logo. According to contemporary newspaper reports, the stamp shows a mirror image of the logo which of course was not the intention. One of the papers reported that collectors had bought quantities of the “wrong way” stamps in the hope that they would one day become valuable rarities. This still hasn’t become reality.
Radio Australia, the Overseas Service of the ABC, had been established in 1939 and for years it did a great job in informing the world about every aspect of life in Australia. Letters from overseas listeners were featured in a very popular weekly mailbag show. The station broadcast not only in English but in other languages as well (Chinese, French, Indonesian, Japanese and Thai). Most of the transmissions were beamed to listeners in Asia and the Pacific area. It might also be of interest to remember that the ABC was using shortwave to reach audiences in the more rural areas of Australia until fairly recently. Over the years I managed to hear many of these regional shortwave broadcasts at my location in faraway Sweden. In 1989, Australia Post issued a single 41c stamp (Fig. 3) marking the 50th anniversary of Radio Australia. The designs features radio waves with a globe in the background. People on Norfolk Island had relied on the shortwave broadcasts from Radio Australia ever since 1939. The local postal service issued no less than

Radio in Australia three stamps marking the 50th anniversary of Radio Australia. The 41c value (Fig. 4) shows John Royle, the announcer who presented the very first programmes on Radio Australia. The Pacific area was the prime target for Radio Australia and the 61c value (Fig. 5) shows a coverage map of one of one of the beams from the transmitting station at Shepparton, Victoria. Looking at the map, one gets the impression that Norfolk Island is more or less the size of Tasmania. The third and final stamp in the Norfolk Island set shows Jacko - the laughing Kookaburra. I still vividly remember the sound of the emblematic bird which announced that Radio Australia was on the air. The bird was depicted on the $1.10 stamp (Fig. 6). Norfolk Island has a population of less than 2000. They have choice of six radio channels on AM and FM including three ABC channels. Rather interestingly, Radio Norfolk 1566 AM relays Radio New Zealand National overnight. Radio Australia disappeared completely from the shortwave bands in 2017. I am not so sure that everyone in Australia was totally happy with this decision.

Personally I felt that it was a sad day when Radio Australia could no longer be heard on shortwave. The shortwave frequencies used by Radio Australia were taken over by China Radio International. Looking at the stamps discussed in this story I fondly remember the many hours spent listening to news and music from the other side of the world. Today I can of course access the ABC Radio Australia on the Internet but it is certainly not the same. After all, Radio Australia was intended for a foreign audience like me. But Australia still has an international broadcaster on shortwave in the form of Reach Beyond, a Christian radio station with transmitters at Kununurra, Western Australia. This station targets listeners in South Asia and the Far East with programming in mostly Asian languages. There are also a couple of completely legal “hobby” stations broadcasting on shortwave. 4KZ in Innisfall, Queensland, on 5055 kHz and Unique Radio in New South Wales on 5035 kHz. Despite very low transmitter power, these two stations have been noted in Sweden.
