Stamps in the News - Globally! Snake Island stamp a stunning success

Reported at https://www.npr.org One of the most popular rallying cries of the Ukrainian resistance emerged early in the war, when soldiers stationed on a Black Sea military outpost called Snake Island responded to Russian troops’ calls to surrender with a few choice words: “Russian warship, go f*** yourself!” The incident has been captured in a special postage stamp, which proud Ukrainians are now lining up en masse to buy, bring home and, in some cases, resell at a markup. The Ukrainian Postal Service (Ukrposhta) held a postage stamp competition to commemorate the soldiers, who were initially believed to have been killed but were actually held captive and released in a prisoner swap in late March. The winning design, as chosen by social media voters, was announced last month. It shows a lone Ukrainian soldier standing on shore, raising a middle finger at a looming grey warship in the water. Artist Boris Groh said he was so impressed by the soldiers’ refusal to surrender that he decided to submit an illustration to lift morale. “I am sure that Ukrainians and our friends from abroad will be pleased to receive letters with such a postage stamp,” the CEO of Ukrposhta, said at a ceremony at the main post office in Kyiv. The stamp became an instant sensation, counting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy among its many fans. Sharing a picture of people in line on Friday, Ukrposhta joked that it was probably the first time that lines for stamps were longer than those for the iPhone. It announced recently that — with nearly half a million stamps already sold — it will limit purchases to no more than six stamps and will cancel online orders. It has been confirmed that some people waited in line for upward of six hours to get their hands on the 12 - Stamp News

stamps. They sell in two denominations at $0.77 and $1.83 each — but some envelopes and stamp sheets are listed on eBay for $2,500 and more. In addition to the original issue, Ukrposhta recently announced via Facebook that an updated issue of the stamp will be released in May minus the Russian warship: The history of Ukrainian heroism is happening in our eyes. And we want to lock her up in the postal stamps. Therefore in May we present a new philatelic masterpiece as a continuation of the previous release. It all started with the phrase “Russian warship, go...! », and it ended up being that he really left. It will include stamps with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and coupons, on which the image of the first stamp with the ship. That is two iconic events in one issue! Total edition - 5 million samples with domestic and international nominees. The new stamp reflects the sinking of the Russian warship Moskva, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, on 14 April after Ukrainian forces hit the ship with two R-360 Neptune anti-ship missiles. It features the inscription “Russian warship…Done!”

And Russia wreaks revenge Reported by https://www.forbes.com

Ukraine’s national postal service has reported that its systems went offline Friday because of a cyberattack following the much-publicized sale of stamps depicting a Ukrainian soldier giving the middle finger to the Russian warship Moskva, which sank last week. Ukrposhta is working with internet providers to restore service, but hasn’t named suspects who may have launched the cyberattack. The targeting of the post office comes just after Ukrposhta launched sales of a new stamp last week showing a soldier making the crude gesture to the Moskva Russian cruiser, a reference to an encounter between the two countries at Snake Island that went viral in the early days of the invasion. The stamps symbolizing plucky Ukrainian resistance against Russia’s invasion proved wildly popular: people in Kyiv lined up for hours to purchase them from post offices. Ukraine has previously accused Russia of attempting to launch cyberattacks, including targeting its electrical grid last month and pulling service from Ukraine’s biggest fixed line telecommunications

company offline in March, claims that the Kremlin denies. Moskva sank last week after it was hit by two Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missiles, according to Pentagon officials. Russia maintains it sank because of an accidental explosion. The loss of the warship— which had 16 anti-ship missile launchers and vertical tubes for 64 air-defense missiles—marks a major setback for Russia, U.S. defense officials said.

While Ukrainian kids dream of a brighter future

Reported at https://www.facebook.com/ukrposhta After the postage stamp “Russian warship … DONE!”, Ukrposhta announced a new stamp, which will enter into circulation in June. Interestingly, the stamp itself was developed before the start of a full-scale war, as part of the competition “What is Ukraine for me?”, which was won by 11-year-old Sofia Kravchuk from Luboml. The childhood dream of Sofia about the happy future of Ukraine is connected with the winged “Dream”. In Sofia’s picture, the world’s largest and most powerful aircraft, AN-225 “Mriya” aircraft, decorated with pink flowers, flies to the stars. The actual plane was destroyed by Russian forces last month. Ukrposhta presented the new stamp during a national telemarathon in Hostomel, in front of the ruined Mriya. In the competition 6,134 participants from eleven

Kyiv residents queue to purchase resistance stamps Stamp News - 13

Stamps in the News - Globally! countries sent to the organizers 10,276 drawings and photographs. The number of copies and the exact date of putting the stamp into circulation will be announced later. Interestingly, the new stamp has a U letter denomination, which has not yet been used. This may be due to the fact that Ukrposhta recently stopped issuing postage stamps with letter denominations Z and V, which are associated with Russia.

North Korea has recently issued a stamp commemorating North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s meeting with then U.S. President Donald Trump at the truce village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone in June 2019, as part of stamps issued to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his ascension to the leadership of the party and the country. The 49 sets of stamps, published by the North’s Korea Stamp Corp., include those featuring Kim’s Singapore summit in 2018 with then U.S. President Donald Trump and another meeting at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom the following year, as well his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. But no stamps on Kim’s summit talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in or a trilateral gathering with Trump at Panmunjom were featured in the collection. Porridge was a no brainer (even though I’m not a huge fan of the texture of cooked porridge). Finland’s fave? A forest in fall… Reported at www.linns.com

People in Finland voted this fall-themed stamp showcasing a photograph by Jukka Risikko as the most beautiful Finnish stamp of 2021. The stamp was issued Sept. 8 in a pane of five with five different designs called Glimmer of Fall. Two stamps showing photographs that capture the colours of autumn topped the popularity poll to select Finland’s most beautiful stamp of 2021. The poll was conducted by Posti, Finland’s postal and logistics provider. The first-place stamp is shown nearby as a single and in the lower right in the pane of five. It received 4,060 of the 49,049 votes cast in the poll, according to Posti. Posti said: “With his photographs, Risikko wants to convey the calming effect of nature. He takes photographs in the countryside and forests of his home region of Lapua, and he hopes to increase people’s appreciation for the environment and nature near

their homes with his photos.” Posti promised, “More of Risikko’s landscape photography will be featured on stamps in the future.”

Reported at https://wellington.scoop.co.nz A Wellington couple are introducing the beauty of Islamic calligraphy to Aotearoa from their make-shift Islamic art studio this Ramadan. Artists Muhammad and Sameera Waqas have designed the first Islamic art postage stamp for NZ Post to celebrate Eid alFitr. Eid al-Fitr celebration marks the end of Ramadan. The International Muslim Association of New Zealand chose the couple to design the postage stamps after NZ Post discussed the project with the Kilbirnie Mosque. Muhammad says he feels “great and blessed to be part of this historic project which will be remembered always.” He says many Muslim Kiwis have told the couple they are proud the community is being recognised on a national level. Both Muhammad and Sameera, who are from Pakistan, have always been interested in visual art but it wasn’t until 2020 that they began collaborating, starting their own art business, MW Calligraphy Art. Muhammad is a multidisciplinary artist while Sameera mainly focuses on acrylics on canvas in an abstract form. While some of their art is traditional Islamic calligraphy, they also create abstract and modern Islamic art, some adding a Kiwi twist, says Muhammad. Their Eid postage stamps feature kōwhai flowers and he says some of their other art features Māori symbols like the Koru and the pikorua. “We hope that our paintings illuminate hearts with love and acceptance and bring a unique Stamp News - 15

Penguins, postage stamps but no citizens

Reported at https://en.mercopress.com

There are many ways to become leader of a country, from standing for election to .staging a revolution. If you’re really desperate, you can always try invading someone else’s country. Answering a newspaper advertisement, however, is a novel route to becoming a head of government. But it’s the one that Laura Sinclair Willis, 39, chose last year. The mother of three, who started her career as an air stewardess, was installed last summer to govern the remote, British-owned outpost of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (or SGSSI). The scattered island nation, half the size of Devon and 800 miles from the Falklands, celebrates 40 years since it was liberated at the end of the 1982 Falklands conflict. It has no citizens at all and there are never more than 30 temporary residents. This British Overseas Territory, which has been separate from the Falklands since 1985, is now acclaimed internationally for its environmental work. South Georgia is also an exotic destination for as many as 15,000 cruise ship tourists each year, who come to buy stamps and souvenirs, toast the grave of the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, see penguins and seals, and even get married in the church. While some might question why British taxpayers’ money is being spent

on a government with no people, South Georgia barely costs the UK anything. It is almost entirely self-supporting, with cash from fishing licences, postage stamp sales and tourism. It makes a modest profit. “It’s more a self-funding model,” says Sinclair Willis. “All the money goes back into environmental stewardship with a bit left for reserves.” Monday April 25 is a public holiday in Laura Sinclair Willis’s realm – Liberation Day, the anniversary of the Royal Navy retaking the island in 1982 as a prelude to recapturing the Falklands, of which SGSSI was at the time a part. Even South Georgia’s new leader admits, however, that Liberation Day is an anomaly as public holidays go, since the country doesn’t really have a public to celebrate it. However there has been a stamp issued. The conflict on South Georgia was precipitated on 19th March when military personnel posing as scrap metal workers landed at Leith Harbour and raised the Argentine flag. Argentina sent reinforcements and, after a short battle, the invading forces took control of Grytviken. British forces were sent and after a series of battles, Argentine forces surrendered on 25th April.

Indeed, Global Times reports that China’s State Post Bureau and China Post called for strengthening of disinfection and anti-epidemic measures at parcel processing centres, while enhancing supervision of international mail in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus. This includes China Post requiring all the processing centres disinfect international mail upon arrival at inbound ports and retain the video clips of the disinfection process for 30 days.

It’s best to be stand-offish.” Postal delivery officer Ozan Aytac says it’s common for dogs to be unpredictable, even if they do not have a history of attacking people. “People generally think that because the dog has never bitten them, they won’t bite strangers.” Animal behaviour and rehabilitation specialist with RSPCA Victoria Doctor Gabrielle Carter said territorial behaviour was normal and while training could help, the most effective way to prevent incidents was management. “Keep them away from the yard and from the front fence,” Dr Carter said. Dr Carter said fear drove the territorial behaviour and it became reinforced when dogs barked and posties left straight away. She said posties throwing treats could also help dogs be less afraid. Mr Gadsby says owners need to understand delivery people are coming to front doors more often these days, as the volume of parcel deliveries continues to rise. While attacks do happen at front doors, letterboxes and in front yards, around half also take place on footpaths or on the road. It’s not only about the posties’ safety Australia Post says the campaign is just as much about keeping dogs safe as it is about their employees and that owners should keep their tied up in a secure area when expecting a delivery. “It’s good for the dog, good for the postie.”

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for June 2022. This month’s column looks at the fins that can come from closely examining your stocks of prestamped envelopes, recent postal stationery literature and postal stationery news. Australia and Papua New Guinea Prestamped Envelope Varieties Joan Orr reports that whilst sorting a box of stationery looking for items, she noticed some anomalies amongst Australian and Papua New Guinea pre-stamped envelopes. She comments that many collectors fail to study the pre-stamped envelopes and other postal stationery of their country of choice. Some buy these, put them into a binder and consign them to the top shelf. These are available in quantity quite cheaply from dealers and club bargain tables, giving plenty of scope for study, with many printings, showing colour and rate changes within an issue, and Australia Post even numbering these on the back, and more recently under the back flap, giving an easy starting point! If you are interested in this book, please contact Reinaldo Mace reinaldo_macedo@uol. com.br ‘ Printings of the Flimsy Advice Forms for Canadian National Express, Canadian Pacific Express and Affiliated Companies by Robert Lemire. In the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century, Canadian express and railway company offices often used messages printed on regularly issued postcards either to provide notification that a shipment to the consignee’s address had been received at the express company office, or to notify a shipper that a shipment had not been picked up. This book describes Canadian postal stationery items (multipart carbon-set forms) prepared for the same purpose (Figure 17 and 18)), printed to order for both Canadian Pacific Express (CP) and Canadian National Express (CNE). firms (Moore Business Forms, Drummond Business Forms, Autographic Business, Savoy, Doucet) carried out the printing. The Post Office Department supplied those firms with film negatives for (usually) dry offset printing, and the printing was done under supervision of Post Office Department employees. An entire flimsy form has several parts: a thin prestamped card on me front and one or two unstamped, printed sheets underneath. Carbon paper was bound into the form between the top card and the unstamped sheet(s). The stamped card was mailed to the shipper or the consignee, as appropriate. One of the unstamped copies was for the agent and another could be kept as an office copy. This book is the result of work by members of the Postal Stationery Study Group of the British North America Philatelic which resulted in a series of articles published in the Group’s newsletter from 2017 -2021. Published 2021. 65 pages, spiral bound, illustrated in colour. Available from the author, Robert Lemire, rlemireOOO@sympatico.ca.

David Gill was one of the most remarkable astronomers in the history of Southern African Astronomy. When Gill took over, the Observatory was outdated. He set out to modernise the facility and when he retired, the Cape Observatory was one of the finest and best equipped observatories in the world. Gill pioneered astro photography and did an incredible amount of work towards establishing photographic catalogues of the Southern Sky. He was also a remarkable person outside of

the field of astronomy. On 18 May 1869, at age 26 in a time when photography was still in its experimental stage, Gill took a picture of the Moon. It can safely be said that it was this achievement – the photograph was an excellent one, even by later standards – which drew attention to the young amateur and started him off on the career, which was to bring him international fame, and provide astronomers all over the world with a priceless new research tool.” A very rare survivor, price $295 (GB235) 80. South Australia 1886 5/- ‘Long Tom’ MLH with RARE compound perf 10 x 12½! An incredibly rare perf variation, that only a maximum 10 copies could exist ever, and few of those have survived today. We’ve never seen another. In the stunning Dark Rose Pink shade. The stamp is perforated 12½ x 11½, and an additional line of perf 10 gauge was applied to at least a few units, if not all of the top row 10 of the sheets of 50. A strip of official repair tape was applied horizontally along top row, with the aberrant perforation row. As can be seen in SG, the printer started off perforating this issue in gauge 10, but tearing apart these large stamps with that coarse gauge damaged them easily, so later about this time, reverted to the much finer 12½ x 11½ gauge.Fresh, bright, well centred MVLH. Looks identical to the example illustrated in Ed William’s superb handbook on these issues, on page 24/25, so probably the adjoining stamp, which has same centering, and repaired perf row 10 is in the exact same position.SG 196ab as a normal stamp. One of the rarities of the series, on a higher face value. Price $595 (SA550) 184. NZ 1898 Pictorials 5/- Mount Cook, SUPERB with corner diagonal line CTO Specimen cancel copy:

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation Introducing the Western Australian Philatelic Council. The Western Australian Philatelic Council Inc. (WAPC) helps to coordinate the activities and promotion of the hobby of stamp collecting within Western Australia. The Council meets monthly; its members represent philatelic societies, stamp clubs, stamp dealers and interested individuals.

Western Australia • Defibrillator available for all philatelic functions. The Council is the WA philatelist’s representative body to the Australian Philatelic Federation (APF), which is a member of the Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP) and the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP).

The objectives of the WAPC include: • Bringing into accord the aims and activities of all stamp clubs and philatelic societies in WA; promoting good fellowship and mutual cooperation. • Giving assistance to philatelic organisations through the provision of finance and supply of display frames. • Protecting the interests of philatelic groups and their members by providing state-wide Public and Product Liability Insurance for the clubs and Volunteer Workers Insurance for the members. • Encouraging and supporting the formation of new philatelic groups. Providing advice and materials for this purpose, on request. • Raising finances in order to promote and foster stamp collecting. • Liaising with Australia Post and the philatelic trade for the benefit of stamp collectors. • Representing the interests of organised philately, positively and effectively, to community and government organisations.

Members’ Benefits & Services As a Corporate Member of the Western Australian Philatelic Council (WAPC), affiliated Clubs and Societies have access to a wide range of benefits, services and subsidies. These are detailed below. To access these benefits or obtain additional information, please contact the Secretary (Glen Stafford):

Council projects include: • Philatelic workshops • Organising speakers and displays for club meetings • Stamping WA booklet • Administration of the Hasluck Award • Listing of philatelic literature that is available for loan • Swan River Stamp Show (held annually) • Encouraging research into the postal history of 40 - Stamp News

Post Office Box Reimbursement In principle, the WAPC believes that Clubs and Societies should not have to rely on individual members of the Club’s Committee to provide for safe, secure and accessible incoming mail. Accordingly, the WAPC will reimburse Clubs and Societies the cost of renting a suitably sized Post Office Box each year. A pro rata reimbursement will be considered when Clubs and Societies share a Post Office Box. To claim the reimbursement, Clubs and Societies should contact the Secretary and detail the amount being claimed. The claim will be considered after a copy of the relevant Invoice and / or Receipt has been provided. Judging of Club & Society Competitions Many Clubs and Societies have as part of their annual program, one or more competitions where members entries are evaluated by club members, club experts and / or an independent authority. Upon request, the WAPC will endeavour to arrange for a suitably qualified judge to take on the independent role. Insurance As a Corporate Member, each Club or Society is required to pay an annual subscription based on its membership. This annual subscription includes a

Russell Boylan

Philatelic Development Officer, APF levy for insurance. This levy enables the WAPC to pay for, and access, a nationwide insurance scheme organised by The Australian Philatelic Federation. Being a nationwide scheme, the cost of insurance is considerably less than that which could otherwise be obtained by any individual Club or Society. By virtue of paying the annual subscription, clubs and societies are automatically included and covered. The insurance cover has two components: • Public & Products Liability Insurance : In brief, this is the standard insurance required by organisations to run events, hire premises etc. It protects the organising body from claims by third parties (members of the public). It does not cover claims by and between members of the Clubs and Societies themselves. The amount insured is $20 million. • Voluntary Workers Personal Accident Insurance : This insurance covers persons aged 12 to 85 years who are injured while performing voluntary work on behalf of the Club or while assisting in the set up and running of an event etc. Visiting Speakers / Guest Display Program The WAPC coordinates a program enabling many members of the various Societies and Clubs to display and talk about their collections. This usually involves a Club or Society inviting a member of a different Club as a guest to display and talk about their collection as part of that Club’s regular meeting. For a list of members and their associated displays which are available as part of this program, please see Visiting Speakers & Guest Display Program Circuit Sheets Through the Circuit Supervisor, WAPC manages a circuit sheet program that has historically been known as the ‘Country Circuit’. Originally this program was designed to provide country clubs with access to circuit sheets. With many metropolitan Clubs having difficulty in providing a circuit sheet facility ‘in house’, some metropolitan Clubs may also access this program (at the sole discretion of the Circuit Supervisor).

All affiliated Club members are entitled to submit material for inclusion in the Circuit. The Circuit Supervisor has the discretion to reject inferior material or give it a lower priority with respect to its inclusion and distribution. Equipment Available for Loan Member Clubs and Societies are encouraged to make use of the Council’s equipment – much of which is suitable for use in the running of events such as Stamp Shows, Exhibitions and Displays etc. The equipment is available free of charge. See the list below. The defibrillator and display panels are routinely stored in the Council’s premises at Wellington Fair, East Perth. The remainder of the equipment is routinely stored at the Council’s storage facility in Baldivis. Clubs and Societies borrowing any of the equipment are responsible for transporting the equipment to and from storage and for returning it in good condition (subject to normal wear and tear). The Council has a trailer that is suitable for this purpose (see 3 below). The Council may be able to assist with transport in some instances. • Defibrillator (heart starter machine). • Toucan Superlite Panel Display (classic 8 with carry case and separate feet [for straight line set up]). Check the company website for details https://toucan.com.au/products/superlite-panel-displays/ • Trailer (and wheel clamp) • 40+ display frames with legs, feet, and carpet underlays. • Two types are available: 15 sheet frames and 16 sheet frames. • Standard moulded plastic folding tables. Each measure 1800 x 750 mm. • More than 100 are available. • Six plastic containers with blue tablecloths. • Two sizes available: single table length, and two table length. • Ten timber bollards with plastic chain. Suitable for defining and separating access areas. • Three lengths of chain are available. Stamp News - 41

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation Upcoming Events At the beginning of each month, the WAPC emails out ‘Upcoming Events – Western Australia’. The email includes specific details regarding events being held in WA for the month as well as a listing of future events and dates. Also included are dates, times and contact details for all regular meetings of affiliated Clubs and Societies. Much of the event content is also listed on the website of the WAPC and other clubs or societies. So, the email essentially serves as a reminder of what is happening in WA. If you would like your email address added to the distribution list, then please contact the Secretary. Note: The Upcoming Events email is sent out ‘blind copy’, so email addresses and contact details are not visible to others on the distribution list.

Room Hire The WAPC and Philatelic Society of Western Australia (PSWA) share two adjoining rooms within Wellington Fair on the corner of Lord and Wellington Streets, East Perth. The rooms have built in display boards, tables and chairs and tea / kitchen facilities. During normal business hours, these rooms are used as Training Rooms by a corporate tenant. Also, some allied organisations have booked the rooms on a regular long-term basis. Outside of these regular bookings, the rooms are available for hire by interested clubs and societies. Available times are generally during the evening and on weekends. The cost to hire is $20 per hour, with considerable reductions being applied where the rooms are hired for a ‘session’ or a ‘day’. The session rate is $50, and the daily rate is $80. The day is divided into three sessions: 8am to 1pm, 1pm to 6pm, 6pm to 11pm. Each session is 5 (five) hours. A booking for more than 2 hours is charged at the session rate. If there is only limited use of the second session, it might be appropriate (cheaper) to apply the session rate for the first session then the hourly rate for the second session. Daily Rates apply when a booking covers two or more consecutive sessions. The rates are reviewed each April. The rates de-

In 1844 an experimental line based on Samuel Morse’s telegraph inventions was constructed between the American cities of Baltimore and Washington D.C. It proved a success and was adopted for telegraph communications around the world. Just ten years later, in 1854, a line based on the American system was constructed between Melbourne and Williamstown in Victoria and Australia’s telegraph history was commenced. The following year, the South Australian Government enticed an English scientist to emigrate to Adelaide to become the colony’s Astronomer and Superintendent of Telegraphs. That person was Charles Todd, who later became one of Australia’s most significant civil servants. A telegraph line was constructed between Adelaide and Port Adelaide in South Australia in 1856. The network of lines grew quickly and by 1858 Adelaide and Melbourne were connected by telegraph. The development of the telegraph in the other colonies soon followed. Tasmania in 1857, New South Wales in 1858, Queensland in 1861 and Western Australia in 1869. Interstate lines, including a submarine cable between Victoria and Tasmania, connected all of the Australian capitals, except Perth, by 1861. At this time Australia was obsessed with its isolation, particularly from the United Kingdom. The only communication was by ship and the contract mails only sailed once each month. Through the 1860s the telegraph network in Europe was expanding and reached out to the east. Charles Todd watched these developments with great interest and recognised an opportunity to connect Australia with the Eastern network via a submarine cable between Darwin and Java. This interest culminated in one of Australia’s greatest construction projects, erecting a telegraph line through Australia’s largely unexplored centre.

Connecting Darwin with the continent’s south took two years and on 22 August 1872 the Overland Telegraph line was completed. Communication with the rest of the world was delayed by a failure of the submarine cable. The cable was repaired on 20 October 1872 and the first message from London was received two days later. Communication with United Kingdom had been reduced from two months to seven hours. More significantly a reply to an important business transaction could be received in fourteen hours rather than four months. The Overland Telegraph and the submarine cable to Java remained the only connection to Europe until 1899 when the trans-Pacific cable was connected. In Australia, the remaining inter-capital link was completed in 1877 when Perth and Adelaide were connected with another massive construction project from Albany to Eucla to connect with a line across the Nullabor. The philatelic reminders of the telegraph in Australia commence with the forms and envelopes that carried the written transcripts of the messages conveyed by the telegraph. A brilliant website describing and illustrating the telegram forms available has been developed by New South Wales collector James Johnstone. https://telegramsaustralia.com/ is highly recommended. The pictorial greetings and commemorative telegrams, and their delivery envelopes, issued in Australia in the 1930s, 40s and 50s are among the most attractive collectables in this field. Historically, stamp collectors have had some difficulty with the place of telegrams in philately but they need not. Pre-stamped telegram forms were issued in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia. Special telegraph stamps, for the prepayment of telegram messages, were issued in New South Wales and Western Australia and the stamps of all Australian Colonies and the Commonwealth were later valid for that purpose. In the more traditionally accepted fields of philately the telegraph system is represented by postage stamps, postal stationery and commemorative postmarks. South Australia’s famous departmental stamps include some overprinted “S.T.” for use by the SuperStamp News - 43

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation intendent of Telegraphs. The centenary of the first telegraph is commemorated by a special stamp and slogan postmark in 1954. The first decimal definitive series of the Australian Antarctic Territory includes a stamp featuring the radio telegraph system and a morse key is featured on the 60c stamp of the 1972 Pioneer Life series. Another morse key features on the 1985 prestamped envelope commemorating the 75th anniversary of amateur radio. Pictorial postmarks featuring a morse key were used at the postal museums at Hobart and Perth. Commemorative postmarks mark the anniversaries of the Cape York Telegraph Route, the completion of the Albany to Eucla line in 1877, and the centenary of the use of Morse Code for ship-to-ship communications in 2012. It is the Overland Telegraph that has generated the most philatelic interest. Postmarks commemorating the centenaries of the commencement of the line’s construction appeared in 1970, the establishment of Alice Springs in 1971 and the completion of the line in 1972. A reproduction of a wooden hut telegraph office was built in a department store in Adelaide and operated a temporary post office for two weeks. A commemorative stamp celebrated the centenary in 1972 and a pre-stamped envelope was issued in 1997 for the 125th anniversary. The Old Telegraph Station at Alice Springs has used a pictorial postmark since 1978 and the building was featured in the 1982 set of stamps depicting Australian Post Offices. The 100th and 125th anniversaries were further celebrated with philatelic exhibitions in Adelaide. ANPEX 1972 yielded the most collectable items ranging from souvenir covers, telegrams, a camel mail, and a hovercraft mail. It was also responsible for one of Australia’s most popular Cinderella sheets featuring reproductions of the £1 and £2 kangaroo stamps and the 5/- Sydney Harbour Bridge commemorative. 30,000 were sold! 150 years on will see the commemoration of the opening of the Overland Telegraph celebrated again with a special stamp and a philatelic exhibition in Adelaide. The exhibition committee is continuing the telegraph theme with working morse code exhibits planned in addition to a special telegram display. The exhibition committee are also keen to involve any philatelists that participated in ANPEX 1972. Thumbing through the catalogue reveals the names of 15-20 philatelists that are still involved in our great hobby. It will be great to re-unite them fifty years later. Exhibitors and visitors wishing to participate are encouraged to visit the website at https://apf.org.au/ sa/anpex22/ for further details. Entries for the exhibition close on 27 May.

Hello and welcome to Part VI of my tour of British Commonwealth stamps. I hope you enjoy looking at this month’s stamps, along with some interesting philatelic details and trivia. I looked at the Gold Coast last month and now we move to beautiful Jamaica. I would rather be there of course but seeing the stamps gives one a sense of, well, being there…. This one (Fig 1) is from the 1919-21 issue with the watermark multiple crown CA. I mention the watermark as there is another printing from the 1921- 29 issue which was issued in 1922 with a multiple script CA watermark.

As I have said before, you really need a comprehensive catalogue so you know if there are various watermarks or perforations, and even colour shades. There can be some large catalogue value differences, especially as in this case, if you have an inverted watermark. This stamp was to commemorate the 1494 landing by Columbus. An interesting history which you can read more about from Google searches. Did you know Columbus visited the island twice and on his second visit in 1503 he was stranded on the island for 12 months? All this from a beautiful stamp! The next stamp (Fig 2) is from the first series of GVI pictorial definitives from 1938. There are some really lovely images on these stamps and they can be expensive stamps to collect if you pay attention to the catalogue values. This

Also Well I expect most would say Mexico or the USA called Bamboo Avenue, it is on the main South as we all remember from our geography lessons Coast Highway, between Middle Quarters and Lathat the Rio Grande is one of the principal rivers in covia. The avenue was planted with Bambusa Vulgaris, the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It’s also well-known because of the length of a species of Bamboo which was the largest variety the river - 1,896 miles - and that it originates in south-central Colorado and flows to the Gulf of Mexico. Well, there is also a Rio Grande in Jamaica. It too is one of the longest rivers, well in Jamaica it is. It was named “Big River” by the Spanish, who controlled Jamaica in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is one of the many tourist attractions and is used mainly for rafting. It’s just about 20 miles long. Enjoy your stamps, for the history they show and the differences which are not always so obviously seen but which can be extremely important. ABU DHABI : A SUCCESS STORY There are many reasons why a country may have disappeared from our stamp catalogues. In many cases wars have created short-lived stamp countries. In other instances two or more previously independent areas have been united into a larger one. Also there are numerous examples of countries and territories having adopted a new name for one reason or the other. All such changes have resulted in what many stamp collectors refer to as “dead” countries. Fortunately most “dead” countries are very much alive and very active under a different name or as part of a larger entity. The first territory listed in the Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth and British Empire catalogue is Abu Dhabi, a prime example of such a country. Abu Dhabi was an independent stamp country from 1964 until it joined its neighbours to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 1971. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is located in the

Figure 1

south-eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula bordering the Persian Gulf (which they probably prefer to call the Arab Gulf). It is by far the largest of the seven emirates making up the United Arab Emirates. In fact, the city of Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE. The city of Abu Dhabi is located on an island and this is where the Al Nahyan clan settled in 1793. There was plenty of fresh water available on the island which obviously was one of the major attractions for the members of the clan. Abu Dhabi can be translated as The Father of the Gazelles and a mountain gazelle was featured on three of the values of the 1964 definitive stamp set (Fig. 1). This was the first issue of stamps released by Abu Dhabi. The naye paise values were offset printed by Harrison in England while the four rupee values were recess printed by Bradbury Wilkinson. The ruler’s palace is depicted on the 1 rupee and

Christer Brunström 2r values (Fig. 2) and it seems to be a rather modest building when compared to many contemporary constructions in the UAE. For years pearl diving was one of the main economic activities in the emirate. Another profitable activity was piracy which led to the area being known as the Pirate Coast. This was something the British were far from happy with as they wanted safe communications with India. Thus in the 19th century British forces annihilated piracy along the coast and the emirates (rather sheikdoms) had to sign peace agreements with the British government and from then on they were known as the Trucial States. Even after Indian independence in 1947, Great Britain desired to keep its control of the Trucial States. One of the main reasons for this policy was the discovery of huge oil resources. Today the United Arab Emirates is a major player in the oil busi-

Figure 3

ness and most of the oil and gas reserves are located in Abu Dhabi. The two top values (5 and 10 rupees) of the 1964 set showcase the country’s oil industry. They depict an oil rig with a number of camels in the forefront (Fig.3). Thus the design unites the modern oil industry with traditional transport. Abu Dhabi has gone from being a poorly developed state with limited financial resources to today’s economic powerhouse with thriving activities in most sectors. It must also be stressed that Abu Dhabi was and still is a country where the ruling family is in charge of the government and where conservative Islam plays a dominant role in society. It is certainly not a democracy in the Western sense of the word. The British established a post office in Abu Dhabi in 1963 and on 30 March 1964 the first stamps were issued. This explains why they are listed in the

ABU DHABI : A SUCCESS STORY Commonwealth and British Empire catalogue. Indian currency (rupee = 100 naye paise) was still in use at that time. The stamps included the head of Sheikh Shakhtibut bin Sultan al Nahyan who had ruled the state since 1928. He was removed from power in 1966 by his brother Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who subsequently became the first president of the UAE. In 1965 Abu Dhabi issued a set of three stamps featuring falconry (Fig. 4), a most popular hunting activity in the Arab world. This set is very popular with collectors of birds on stamps and currently retails for about AU$50 in unmounted mint condition. In 1966 the currency was changed to the dinar which can be divided into 1000 fils. It is still in use today. The 1964 definitive stamps were surcharged with new denominations in the new currency. This is quite an expensive set which includes a number of very scarce overprint varieties. The government of Abu Dhabi took control of

the postal service on 1 January 1967 thus ending its long association with Great Britain. Stamps showing the portrait of the new ruler were issued. Shown here is one of stamps in a set of four marking the second anniversary of the accession of the new ruler (Fig. 5). Economic development was rapid and many of the achievements were commemorated on postage stamps. A 1969 stamp shows the main terminal of the airport (Fig. 6). As an independent state, Abu Dhabi issued 95 different postage stamps which certainly is a reasonable amount. Unlike the other UAE states, Abu Dhabi maintained a very serious new issue policy mostly releasing stamps featuring local scenery and events. At times there have been speculation in some of Abu Dhabi’s stamp issues and there are two or three genuinely scarce overprint varieties. However, most of the issues are affordable but it might be somewhat of a problem locating them at reasonable prices.
