Wallace Bros. of London sent John Wallace to Melbourne in 1890, creating the first dedicated Stamp Shop in the City. The initial place of business was 562 Collins St, but a move to Mason’s Buildings, Sugden Place (off Little Collins St, between Swanston and Russell Sts.). Two years after arriving, Wallace sold the business to newly arrived fellow Englishman, William Ackland.

The Most Important Flight Cover In An Australian Collection In December 1934, in preparation for the first scheduled air service between Australia and England, the Australian Post Office issued a new 1/6d stamp to pay the basic letter rate by air to England. Shortly after on 8 December 1934 the first scheduled air service left Australia. Why are First Flight Covers on this flight so important in Australian airmail history? It all started with the first settlers who arrived in Australia in 1788. They were so remote from relatives and friends in England and completely isolated. The sea journey to England, through some of the roughest seas in the world, took at least eight months. Few ships called at the Colony. Those that did had to sail to China or India for cargo before sailing to England. So dangerous was the journey to England that at least two copies

of any letter was sent on other ships as there was a real possibility that a ship may not reach its destination. Gradually sail gave way to steam and the journey back to England by sea was reduced to about six weeks. The shipping service, however, could not be relied on for in every war, and there were several in the early days. The ships were taken off the run to Australia to carry troops. Getting mail to and from England was of the utmost importance to the Australian people. The Ross and Keith Smith flight from England to Australia was so important because it provided the hope that aircraft might eventually solve the mail problem with England. It is interesting to note that the Smith flight arrived shortly after the first mail ship from England following the

Ronald M. Lee withdrawal of the regular shipping services during WWI. In the 1920s Imperial Airways began flying toward India reaching Karachi and later extending to Delhi. The aircraft being flown were outdated in design and unprofitable. Australians could then send mail by sea to Colombo, by train to Karachi and then mostly by air to England. This service did not always significantly shorten the travel time and although it continued for many years was eventually not advertised by the Post Office. Imperial Airways, under pressure from Commercial organisations to provide an airmail service to Australia, flew to Singapore and Qantas Empire Airways flew from Singapore to Brisbane. This was the break through. At last there was a scheduled air service every couple of weeks taking Petersham_July_2022 1/06/2022 5:36 pm Page 1 about 14 days to fly the mail to England. The Australian people were so excited yet surprisingly it appears there has been little philatelic

celebration of this extremely important event. Illustrated is a First Day Cover, (Figure 1), of the 1/6d stamp sent on the first scheduled flight to England. I would be interested to hear from collectors who have similar items. One would have expected a special cover to be designated for such an important flight. There is, of course, much more to this story than I can tell in this short article. In this issue of Stamp News is an advertisement for a prepublication offer for Book 2 of my series, entitled, ‘The Rapid Advances between 1934-1939 of the England - Australia Airmail’. This book, as per the title, covers the period from 1934-1939 when WWII began and details not only Imperial Airways struggle to maintain the England Australia service but its triumph on introducing the ‘C’ Class Empire flying boats and the ‘All UP’ scheme for cheaper airmail. Stamps in the News - Globally! Platinum highlights in the UK

Reported at https://corporate.postoffice.co.uk/en/ blogs Postmasters and Postmistresses all over the UK are gearing up to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – from bunting and decorations to hosting tea parties. UK’s oldest Postmistress, Olive Norris, aged 92, is still serving Post Office customers in the Norfolk village of Thompson. She has put up bunting and flags at the Post Office and gifting a special Platinum Jubilee 50p coin to every village child to help them remember this occasion, to be presented at the Platinum Jubilee party being held in the village. Olive, who has been a Postmistress for 31 years, said: “We always have parties in Thompson to mark special Royal occasions. I think the Queen is amazing. She is a great role model. We are nearly the same age and we are both still working.” Postmistress for Pontrilas, Sonya Cary, organising three days of events to mark Jubilee for her Herefordshire community. The fun begins on June 3 with a Jubilee high tea and a Royal fancy dress competition. Initially Sonya set up a Community Interest Com-

Profits from that were then invested into a community café, lunch club and bingo to help combat loneliness and malnutrition in the elderly in this farming community. Valerie Johnson, Postmistress for Baltasound, the UK’s most northern Post Office is getting ready to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. She is pulling out the stops to decorate her branch with lots of bunting and flags to mark the historic milestone. Valerie whose family also keep sheep and Shetland ponies on the remote Shetland Island, are currently busy with the lambing and foaling season but wanted to make sure that the branch was decorated for the Jubilee. Valerie has been the Postmistress for 24 years said: “I do like the Royal Family especially the Queen, so I wanted to make sure I decorated my branch. This Jubilee is extra special as it marks the Queen’s 70 years reign. “ Postmaster Mark Eldridge has been very busy decorating Great Massingham Stores & Post Office and the Great Massingham Mobile Post Office which provides Office services to 16 rural villages in North Norfolk. Twice a week, the Great Massingham Post Office visits West Newton, a village next to the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. Postmaster Mark Eldridge said: “In Norfolk we are really excited about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. My team and I have been busy decorating our shop and Mobile Post Office. We are having special Jubilee afternoon teas to celebrate.” Earlier this year, Post Office rolled out the new 50p coin to mark The Queen’s Jubilee on behalf of the Royal Mint via its

Postmaster Umesh Sanghani has run Dedworth Green Post Office in Windsor for 23 years. “We had many customers coming in to check that we are going to get the special 50p coin. They didn’t want to miss out on this souvenir. I am a Royalist. It is amazing that the Queen has reached her 70th anniversary.“

Considering her face appears on billions of items of mail each year, it is perhaps not surprising that the Queen is said to take a special interest in stamps. “When she is offered designs for Royal Mail commemorative stamps, she sees them and comments and, on occasions, she says ‘no thank you’ and they change them,” says Peter Cockburn, president of The Royal Philatelic Society London. The Queen has been patron of The Royal Philatelic Society London since 1952, keeping to a tradition within her family that has lasted for more than a

century. “She’s really interested in stamps because of her grandfather,” Mr Cockburn explains. From the start of her reign in 1952 until 1967, British stamps featured a picture of the Queen by photographer Dorothy Wilding During a visit to an international philatelic exhibition organised by the society in London in 1890, Queen Victoria’s second son Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, revealed his nephew, Prince George of Wales, the Queen’s grandfather and future King George V, was a stamp collector. Six years later, George became the society’s president and, when he became king in 1910, he was named patron - something which has been stuck to by all British monarchs since then. “George V was a very fine philatelist, made a lot of collections and they are now known as the Royal Philatelic Collection. It belongs to the Queen personally” says Mr Cockburn. The cast of the Queen made by Arnold Machin has continued to be used as the basis for British stamps since 1967. As patron, the monarchy has also made official visits to the philatelists’ headquarters during her 70year reign. In 1969, she helped celebrate the society’s cente-

Stamps in the News - Globally! nary, and then she dropped in again just before the pandemic began in November 2019 to open the new building - on both occasions signing the same visitors book. During her 45-minute visit the Queen would have seen the society’s own copy of the Machin Head one of six large moulds created by Stoke-on-Trent artist Arnold Machin, which were then photographed and turned into the famous portrait found on the majority of British stamps since 5 June 1967. In 2017, Royal Mail estimated the Machin portrait had been reprinted more than 220 billion times around the world in a huge variety of colours and denominations, meaning it has become its own iconic piece of art. “It is said that this image is the most used image that the world has ever seen,” according to Mr Cockburn. Yet stamp collectors will not find it on the special commemorative set issued by Royal Mail to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee because the Queen’s image appears in the actual designs themselves. “For the Jubilee it is natural that you have Royal Mail producing stamps, although they’re probably not as popular as they used to be,” Mr Cockburn added.

The photographs depict important points through each state along the river. The world’s fourth-longest river begins its journey, ironically, in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The headwaters of the Mississippi are located inside Minnesota’s oldest state park, Itasca State Park. It then wends its way through Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. At this point, the Mississippi River has intermingled with waters from 31 states.

Singapore takes a dekko at architecture

This comes after Singapore Post recently issued a set of stamps featuring six such buildings designed in the classic Art Deco style. In Singapore, many buildings featuring the Art Deco style were built between the 1930s and 1950s, a time of great societal change. Many have been conserved including the featured Waterboat House located in the Fullerton area, Maxwell Chambers in Tanjong Pagar, 9 Norris Road in Little India, 36/38 Armenian Street near City Hall, 13 Pahang Street near Kampong Glam and 79 Circular Road near Boat Quay. The Art Deco architectural style has its roots in Paris from the early 1900s. Nestled in the English Channel just 14 miles from France, Jersey has a cuisine which enjoys both British and French influences, with a distinctly island twist added into the mix. Geographically, the Island’s unique location also provides fertile soil and plenty of sun, fuelling Jersey’s agricultural industry and resulting in high-quality ingredients. A new set of Swiss stamps are designed to stimulate the senses and evoke memories of campfires. Swiss Post has issued a special postage stamp to commemorate the national Guide and Scout Movement. With a face value of CHF1.10 the stamp smells of smoke and marks the National Jamboree that takes place every 14 years. The scent is released by rubbing the special coating of the stamp and evoke memories of “campfire, huge campsites and spending time together with friends”. Swiss Post have introduced a number of stamps with an extra dimension Firstly, there was a chocolate-flavoured stamp, followed stamps with the tang of roses and quinces. There were also embroidered stamps and others made entirely of wood, as well as a Braille and a crypto stamp.

Greece’s efforts to raise awareness for the return of the ancient sculptures to Athens. Under the title “Reunite Parthenon”, each stamp features on the right a removed artefact from the Parthenon in Athens, an UNESCO World Heritage site, and a call on the left side for its return to the Acropolis Museum. It is a reminder that the Parthenon Marbles were illegally removed in the 1800s by Lord Elgin, who later sold the Greek artworks to the British Museum and which today are among its top money-making exhibits. “ELTA offers the Reunite Parthenon Commemorative Stamp Series in the service of national cultural diplomacy with the aim of disseminating the call for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles across the world strengthening the ecumenical vision,” said Hellenic Post. Earlier this month, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in Case of Illicit Appropriation (ICPRCP) during its 23rd session in Paris, called on Greece and the UK to resolve the long-standing issue and announced that talks would begin between culture ministers.

Droning on in India

Reported at https://in.mashable.com The Indian Postal Services has conducted its very first drone postal service in Kutch Gujarat with resounding success in May this year. As a part of Drone Mahostav 2022 industry festival, the project was inaugurated by Prime Minister himself. The mailed item was a medical parcel that was sent via the Indian Postal Services Drone from Habay village to Ner village in the Kutch district. It took around 25 minutes to cover a distance of 46 kilometres. The mail was sent via the drone under the guidance of the Union Ministry of Communications.

While the trial may open doors for drone deliveries in the future, the cost effectiveness, staff coordination and the overall process including hassles in the delivery require analysis.

Droning on in the UK

Britain’s postal service has laid out plans to run a fleet of 500 autonomous drones to make mail delivery easier to some of the country’s most remote areas. As a first step, the Royal Mail hopes to launch more than 50 routes supported by up to 200 drones over the next three years. And as part of the plan, it has confirmed a partnership with drone maker Windracers. However, there are some hurdles to negotiate before the proposal becomes a reality including approval from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority and rigorous cost benefit analysis. To date, the Royal Mail’s use of drones has been restricted to trial flights in some of the UK’s hardest to reach points, including the Isle of Mull, the Isles of Scilly and the Orkney Islands. With mail currently taken to remote areas by ferries and conventional aircraft, the introduction of drones would cut emissions and also improve reliability, with the drones less susceptible to extreme Stamp News - 17

The Europa stamp theme for 2023 has been changed to “Peace — the highest value of humanity” at the request of Ukraine’s post office, according to an April 29 press release from PostEurop. The trade association representing European public postal operators, PostEurop also selects the theme for the multination Europa stamp series. A contest will be held to select the common design to be used by all participating nations. Underwater fauna and flora, originally to be the subject of Europa stamps in 2023, will now be the theme for 2024. Likewise, the theme of national archaeological discoveries is postponed from 2024 to 2025. Each postal administration will select its own stamp designs for these themes. The decision to change the stamp theme for 2023 was made at the April 25 meeting of the PostEurop board of directors, the press release said. In addition, PostEurop has previously discussed in meetings held in March and April the possibility of suspending both Russian Post and Belarus’ Belpochta from participating in PostEurop activities. That action will perhaps take place at a virtual meeting of the association’s general assembly on June 1. The first Europa postage stamps were issued in 1956 by six postal administrations. In 2021, more than 50 postal administrations issued Europa stamps.

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for June 2022. This month’s column looks at the publication of the latest section of the Handbook of the Postal Stationery of New South Wales and the catalogues available for the other Australian colonies/ states. Handbook of the Postal Stationery of New South Wales - The Official Postal Cards of New South Wales For some time, three collectors of New South Wales postal stationery, Michael Blinman, Dingle Smith and Peter Kowald, have been working on producing a handbook of New South Wales postal stationery. A large part of the Handbook and the associated catalogue have now been completed. As each section becomes available it has been placed on the Postal Stationery Society of Australia Website at https://postalstationeryaustralia. com/postal-stationery-of-new-southwales-handbook/. The most recent sections to be added to the website are the Handbook and Catalogue sections on the Official Postal Cards of New South Wales. The use of perfins in New South Wales is complicated due to the relatively widespread use of forged perfins often added to already used postal cards. Examples of forged perfins are given in the Handbook and the authors would especially like to acknowledge the help of Michael Drury and members of the Perfin Club of New Zealand and Australia for help in describing this material. The final phase of New South Wales official postal card was for those with the heading OHMS, for `On His Majesty’s Service’. These appear to have been produced in small batches often in differing sizes for a wide range of government departments and ceased with the death of King Edward VII in 1911. Although the official postal cards were issued over a relatively short period of time the variety and background offer a varied and challenging topic to the postal stationery collector. Figure 9 shows a 1d postcard with OHMS overprint for the Ordinance Department. The PSSA website has a preface to the New South Wales Handbook and Catalogue Listing including ‘Background and Dedication’, and an introduction to the Postal Stationery of New South Wales . The handbook is dedicated to the late John Bell from Goulburn as a tribute to his research on the Postal Stationery of New South Wales over many years. Between August 2006 and November 2011, he published thirty-one articles, listings and comments in Sydney Views. These were based on his own extensive collection of NSW postal stationery and exhaustive research of the NSW State archives. His research was enhanced by his `discovery’ in the in the NSW Archives of the Government Printing Office records from 1875 until January 1895. These comprise monthly printing records that list all the occasions that postal stationery items were printed. A treasure trove that greatly adds to the story of NSW postal stationery. The Handbook also builds on other past collectors of New South Wales postal stationery including Carl Stieg and Ed Druce. tions (Figure 10) · A Priced Catalogue of the Australian Colonies/ States: Western Australia by Brian Pope published in July 2001 by the Postal Stationery Society of Australia (Figures 11 and 12) While many collectors and dealers still continue to use the listings in Higgins and Gage (H&G or HG), that catalogue provides only very simplified listings of postal stationery. In addition, the catalogue has not been updated since the early 1980s and many of the listings are flawed. Collectors interested in the Australian states need to obtain and use the more specialised catalogues if they are to properly understand their subject. If you are interested in collecting the postal stationery of these states, I urge you to make use these references. The catalogues for Victoria and Western Australia are out of print and you will need to seek copies of the catalogues in the second-hand market. For Queensland and South Australia, we await the completion of comprehensive catalogues of the postal stationery of these states. While there is no standard reference catalogue for Queensland there are a range of publications and articles on the subject which should be consulted by the collector. These were discussed in this column in the December 2020 issue of the Australasian Stamps News. reviews Stanley Gibbons Catalogue reviews Hello everyone, and welcome to the first lot of Stamp News SG catalogue reviews in almost 2 years! As I mentioned at the end of the last group of reviews way back in mid 2020, due to the COVID crisis ‘This (COVID) may very well impact the availability of these catalogues together with other philatelic publications and supplies’. Little did I imagine back then, nearly 2 years ago, just what an impact the pandemic would have on such matters! Earlier this year in his column in Gibbons Stamp Monthly the catalogue editor, Hugh Jefferies, mentioned the fact that the Channel Islands & British Indian Ocean Territory catalogues (reviewed below) were the first SG Commonwealth ‘sectional’ catalogues to be published in nearly 2 years. While the annual GB catalogues ‘Collect British Stamps’ & ‘GB Concise’ together with the British Commonwealth catalogue were each published in 2020 & 2021, no new sectionals appeared. Even the SG flagship catalogue, Stamps of the World, did not have a 2021 edition! Fortunately for us catalogue starved collectors, 2022 is off to a good start with 3 new editions in the first four months, and more to follow soon, including, I believe, new editions of the New Zealand & Australia catalogues. These countries are: British Indian Ocean Territories, new issues up to June 2021, Maldive Islands to 2015 (including appendix issues to 2020 which take up 3 pages by themselves!), Mauritius to December 2021 & Seychelles to October 2020. Also included are listings for Madagascar British Consular Mail & British Inland Mail, Mauritius Express Delivery stamps, Postage Dues and Fiscals Stamps Used for Postage, and the short lived issues of Zil Elwannyen Sesel.

mike lee This new edition starts with a 6 page article entitled ‘British Indian Ocean Territory: The Beginning and Before’ by Steve Pendleton where the author outlines the history of this remote territory through it’s postal history & stamp issues. This is quite topical with the political situation in the BIOT at the moment leading the UPU late last year year to declare that BIOT stamps will no longer be accepted on international mail, and that only the stamps of Mauritius should be sold there. Will this lead to the BIOT becoming a philatelically ‘dead’ country, again? Update: In the January 2022 edition of GSM Noel Davenhill advised in the Catalogue Column that he had contacted the post office on Diego Garcia to be told that BIOT stamps had, indeed, been taken off sale – but that ‘mailing out was still on hold’ – the plot thickens…. Other new information includes the ‘Misplaced stop’ varieties being added to the ‘B.I.O.T.’ overprints on Seychelles, and the ‘Serrated edge’ flaw has been added to the 1938 King George VI definitives of Mauritius. There are also new watermark varieties in both Mauritius and Seychelles. Finally, the publishers advise that ‘Numerous notes have been added throughout, providing additional advice and information.’ And that ‘Prices have been extensively revised, with many significant increases in both Mauritius and Seychelles.’ A must have catalogue for any collector even remotely interested in this collecting area. 2022 Italy and Colonies 1st edition Paperback, 427 pages RRP A$TBA This is the companion publication to the first edition of the Switzerland including Liechtenstein and United Nations at Geneva catalogue published back in early 2020. As explained in my review of that catalogue, this is a 1st edition as these countries had, up until then, all been published in one combined volume, thus we have two 1st editions in these separate volumes. The title of ‘Italy & Colonies’ is selling the catalogue a little short as the issues of San Marino & The Vatican are also included. And it doesn’t stop there. A quick perusal of the index shows at least another 32 stamp issuing entities are also included

within! An excellent illustrated 5 page article entitled ‘Italian States: The Kingdom of LombardyVenetia’ by Giorgio Migliavacca covering the earliest Italian stamps can be found on page XX. While we’re at the front of the catalogue I’ll add my usual reminder to check the list of ‘numbers added’ & ‘numbers changed’ on page III. They’re only fairly short lists in this volume, but consulting them may avoid stress & frustration trying to find a catalogue number that has changed or a new number not found in earlier editions of the catalogue. New issues are covered up to September 2021 for Italy & San Marino, and November 2020 for Vatican City. The design indexes for these three countries have also been updated. There are simplified, priced listings of booklets for Italy, San Marino & Vatican City, together with a listing of Vatican City’s machine labels. The many useful notes, together with prices have been reviewed & updated for this edition. Bearing in mind that this is the only single volume catalogue available in English that covers the Italian area at this level of detail, it really is a must have for anyone with even a passing interest in Italian philately! Just a quick note about the digital versions that I mentioned above. The three catalogues reviewed here are all available (along with several others) from the Stanley Gibbons website: just Google Stanley Gibbons, click on ‘Publishing & Catalogues’ and then ‘Browse our digital catalogues’. Cinderella Corner Australian-Produced Antarctica Cinderellas – Part I Introduction Welcome to the July edition of Cinderella Corner. This issue explores some of the many vibrant Antarctica Cinderellas, produced in Australia, over the years. Along with next month’s follow-up piece, this Cinderella Corner recognises the Antarctica Stamp and Postcard Exhibition, which will be held in Hobart, Tasmania, from 24 to 28 August. The labels collectively explored in this article serve as a snapshot of the Australian-issued Antarctica Cinderellas that exist, and they cover those produced by artist and philatelic dealer Jack Koch. Next month’s Cinderella Corner will continue the narrative, unpacking labels produced by philatelic dealer Ray Simpson, and the well-known Cinderella Goliath Bill Hornadge. As usual, I welcome feedback and comments. Jack Koch Austrian-born artist and philatelic dealer Jacques Koch-Orthoff, known widely as Jack Koch, was an expressionist painter who displayed a fondness for Australian landscapes. Born in 1933, he arrived in Australia in 1955 and, in pursuit of several philatelic endeavours, established Bay Stamps in Glenelg, South Australia. With broad ventures in aerophilately including a longstanding interest in rocket covers, Jack branched into polar and Antarctica philately around 1967 and, over a period extending more than a decade, he created a number of Cinderellas and covers, many limited in numbers.

1967 Antarctic Expedition One of the earliest known Antarctica labels produced by Koch is illustrated in Figure 1. The small rectangular label, measuring 60mm x 10mm, is coloured deep yellow and red and features the text: Antarctic Expedition. It is affixed to the front of a Mawson AAT cover postmarked 16 February 1967. The cover also features a pictorial handstamp, with its penguin motif featured in another one of Koch’s early Antarctica labels. 40 - Stamp News

Early Penguin Types In the late 1960s, Jack Koch issued a label featuring a penguin on a floating ice sheath. Several colours were issued, in strips of 4, including the two-toned red type illustrated in Figure 2, and the green and burgundy type, illustrated on a cover in Figure 3. Each imperforate label measures 42mm x 41mm. The cover in Figure 3 is postmarked 8 December 1969 at the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE), and was carried aboard the 1969 Antarctica Expedition Supply Vessel. Limited Edition Sheetlets In 1977 and 1978, Jack Koch released several cinderella minisheets in perforated and imperforated blocks of four. Details of these types are summarised in the Table 1. All overprints on the labels outlined in Table 2 are inked in red, except for the Garraty & For Antarctic Expedition, and SUMMERLAND TRAVEL AUSTRALIA ones, which are inked in black. These were available in four colours. Some of these labels were also perforated 11, with examples of the QANTAS NEWS ADELAIDE type (imperforate 42 - Stamp News

and perforated) illustrated in Figure 14 and Figure 15, respectively. Examples across all the nine types outlined in Table 2 were also affixed to the front of limited printed flight covers. The Jack Koch silk cover illustrated in Figure 16 is one of 220 produced and, at its 1978 release, was sold for $3.50. Local Stamps Jack Koch produced a 50c local stamp some time in 1977, with many affixed to covers carried by QANTAS charter planes from November 1977. Measuring approximately 33mm x 33mm, the label features four identically sized penguins and the text: ANTARCTICA Airmail / 50c

The sheets were successful upon release, and all were reported to have quickly sold out. An example of each of the three types outlined in Table 3 are illustrated in Figure 22 (perforated), Figure 23 (imperforated), and Figure 24 (imperforated and without QANTAS label). It was reported, by Jack Koch, that all dies used to create his late 1970s Antarctic cinderella minisheets were destroyed in 1980.

An example of the label affixed to a 23 February 1981 postmarked cover is illustrated in Figure 17. The Cinderellas were sold in imperforate pairs or in sheets of eight or nine labels. Four colours were issued: blue, brown, bone, and yellow, all with red text. Examples of each colour type, as issued imperforate pairs, are

Antarctic Scenes In the early 1980s, Jack Koch produced several labels from his original drawings of Antarctica scenes. These were produced in imperforate minisheets of four labels in three different colours: blue, red, and brown. Each sheet measures approximately 126mm x 105mm and features the heading ANTARCTIC SCENES at the top, a description of the scenes at the base, and a DRAWING BY JACK KOCH disclaimer. An example of one of the brown minisheets is illustrated in Figure 25. Some of the labels were also overprinted with SPECIMEN, in black, and an Stamp News - 43

example is illustrated in Figure 26. The labels were also applied to some limited produced covers, with an example of a 15 November 1984 cancelled Mawson cover illustrated in Figure 27. An example of the artwork and mock-up for one of the minisheets is illustrated in Figure 28. I extend my thanks to Mr. Gary Watson for allowing me to reproduce this latter image. These labels are some of Jack Koch’s final Antarctica cinderellas before he returned to Austria and died there, suddenly, in August 1999.

Hello and welcome to Part VII of my tour of British Commonwealth stamps. I hope you enjoy looking at this month’s stamps, along with some interesting philatelic details and trivia. This month we move to Kenya Uganda and Tanganyika, often just referred to as KUT. The history of these countries makes for what I think is a very interesting collecting area. The postal administrations of the three were amalgamated on January 1st 1933 and stamps were issued until 1976 when the postal union was dissolved, and each territory began issuing separate stamps. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue describes the history very well and there is plenty of interesting information to be found from Google searches.

The above (Fig 1 SG 111, Scott 47) shows the dhow and is a stamp always worth checking if you have a copy. There is a printing variety where the rope of the dhow is joined to the sail (Fig 2 SG 111a, Scott 47a) and also, and far more importantly, a perf variety which commands considerable sums both mint and used. od. This stamp is one of the 1938 pictorial definitives, a very interesting group of stamps with issues from 1938 through to 1954. There are perforation varieties to keep you checking your copies for hours and even longer to find those perforation varieties, and some interesting varieties to collect as well. This 50c stamp is one example. The first image (Fig 3) shows a used copy and, as I say, there are a few perforation varieties. The second copy (Fig 5) shows a different perf but also with the “dot removed” variety from a 1950 printing. If you look just to the left of the letter K in Kenya in Fig 5 (see Fig 4 for this detail) you will see that the dot I am referring to is not there in the second stamp. This 50c issue had quite a few printings. Using a Stanley Gibbons British Empire Stamps 1840 to 1970 catalogue you will also

find there are 4 different shades listed. There are 7 stamps in the SG 144 listing, well, 8 if you include a watermark inverted copy which is catalogued at £5000 used in the 2021 edition. So let’s say we just try to keep our collection to the 7 stamps! This next stamp is also from the George VI definitive issue. Although still a pictorial definitive, it is of a different design, with the King’s head prominent in the centre of the stamp rather than in a smaller oval to the right or left of the design feature. In this case the design shows the Nile Railway Bridge at Nipon Falls in Uganda. That is the title in the catalogue but it is also called the Jinja Bridge at Nipon Falls. The first issue of this design was on a George V issue in 1935, then this issue with George VI in 1938. From a philatelic perspective you must check the perforations of any copy you have or that you are thinking of buying. There are three different perforations, ranging from £3.25 for a mint copy to £160. I won’t bore you with the details as they can be looked up easily enough. Similarly, Used can be 10c to £11. As for the bridge, I cannot find a history of it which is a shame. I was looking forward to reading about it as it was used on both the KGV and KGVI stamps. All I can find are details about the new bridge that was opened in 2018. Perhaps a reader knows more. Finally, this is from the QE II 1954 issue. Rather stunning I think. There was also a 10c value of the same design, just a different colour. For this 50c value do look carefully at the colour as there was a second printing in 1957 in the colour claret, rather than this shade which is, by the SG colour guide, reddish purple. UKRAINE’S PHILATELIC HISTORY Today Ukraine is very much in the news following the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022. So far the Russian aggression has resulted in enormous destruction and loss of life. Millions of Ukrainians (mostly women and children) have been forced to leave the country. I suppose most of them are eager to return to Ukraine in order to rebuild their lives and their country. Ukraine has a very long history either as an independent state or as part of the Russian Empire. More than 1000 years ago, Vikings from Sweden settled in the area and formed a state along with the local tribes. Today Ukraine has a mixed population of people speaking Ukrainian, Russian and other minority languages. There is even an Old Village with a small amount of Swedish speaking people who were brought there from Estonia (which used to have a Swedish-speaking minority). The Moscow leadership claims that Ukraine is

not a real country which of course is quite absurd. Other ludicrous claims include statements that they are ridding Ukraine of neo-Nazis. Ukraine declared its independence on 22 January 1918. However, Russian, German and Polish forces occupied all or parts of the country at different periods in time. The national government released its first set of five stamps in July 1918. Shown nearby is the 30s stamp (Fig. 1) featuring an allegorical depiction of Ukraine in the form of a woman’s head (other sources claim that it is the goddess Ceres. In August 1918, Russian postage stamps were overprinted with a trident formed emblem. The overprint was applied locally at post offices throughout Ukraine resulting in a large number of varieties. A typical example is shown in Fig. 2. In January 1919, there was a single high value (Fig. 3) in a new design. It was mainly used in con-

Christer Brunström nection with money transfers and parcels. It was only used for a brief period of time and the stamp is quite scarce today. In early 1919, Ukraine was proclaimed a Soviet republic which was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1922 and Soviet stamps were used at post ofﬁces in Ukraine from then on. At the end of World War I, the Ukrainian government-in-exile continued its struggle from different locations in Poland. It obviously had high hopes of being able to return to Kyïv, as postage stamps were ordered from a company in Vienna. A 14-value set with patriotic designs was produced in 1920 but, and for obvious reasons, it was never put into use. Instead, most of the printing was sold off to the philatelic trade. Shown nearby is the top value featuring a windmill (Fig. 4). For years, these unissued stamps were included in cheap stamp packets. This interesting set is still affordable and the Scott

catalogue values the complete set of 14 stamps at just $5. The 40h value is shown nearby. It should be noted that these stamps only exist in mint condition. Some of the stamps are known imperforate or with inverted or omitted centers – they are printing waste which should never have left the printers in Vienna. The US Scott catalogue mentions this set in a footnote and illustrates three of the designs. The status of this issue is explained. The early 1920s were difﬁcult times in Ukraine (and other parts of the USSR). People died of hunger as there wasn’t enough food available to feed the population. In April 1923, the Ukrainian SSR issued a set of semi-postals printed in Berlin in an attempt to collect funds to alleviate the suffering. The design of the 10k + 10k value (Fig 5) is particularly drastic showing Death Stalking a Peasant. I suppose that most stamp collectors believed that

UKRAINE’S PHILATELIC HISTORY this was the end of Ukraine as a stamp-issuing entity. However, they were wrong. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine once again became an independent nation in August 1991. On 24 August 1992, the Ukrainian Post Office released a postage stamp (Fig. 6) marking the first anniversary of independence. The design includes the national flag and the Ukrainian trident emblem. In 1993 Ukraine issued a stamp (Fig. 7) marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Kyïv from German occupation. The Germans left a city in ruins as depicted on the left part of the design. The rebuilt city is shown on the right. Hopefully the war will soon end; the Ukrainians will need a lot of help to rebuild their villages, towns and cities which have suffered enormously from Russian bombing and shelling.

Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporter of wheat and other agricultural products. The Russian war has resulted in huge difﬁculties for a large number of countries which rely on Ukrainian wheat. It is likely that one of tragic effects of this war will be famine in parts of Africa and Asia. Wheat ﬁelds are depicted on a 2002 stamp (Fig. 8) devoted to the Kyïv region in the north of the country. Postage stamps can tell us a lot about the world we live in and about history. The stamps shown in this brief article tell the story in digest form of Ukraine as a stamp-issuing country so far. Readers of Stamp News have already been told about recent Ukrainian stamps which tell about the heroic struggle against the Russian attempts to completely destroy its neighbour.
