This year marks 50 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in Norway. On 21 April 1972, Section 213 of the Norwegian Penal Code, which prohibited sexual acts between men, was repealed. To mark this anniversary, and this year’s Queer Culture Year, Norway Post issued a rainbow-coloured stamp with the words Love is Love.

Cinderella Corner Australian Produced Antartica Cinderellas Introduction
Welcome to the August edition of Cinderella Corner and the final article, from me, after nearly seven years of service. This issue continues from last month’s exploration of the many vibrant Antarctica cinderellas, produced in Australia, over the years. It is written, with the encouragement of Tony Shields, to help celebrate the Antarctica Stamp and Postcard Exhibition held in Hobart, Tasmania, from 24 to 28 August. The labels explored in this article serve only as a snapshot of the many types that exist, covering those produced by philatelic dealers Ray Simpson and Bill Hornadge. As usual, I welcome feedback and comments.
Ray Simpson’s 1979 Antarctic Expeditions
In early 1979, Ray Simpson of NSW’s Australia Square Stamps prepared a label for affixing to covers for the proposed 21 February Scouts Association flight from Sydney to Antarctica. An example of this label is illustrated in Figure 1. When the flight was cancelled due to severe weather driven by Ionospheric Storms, many of the labels had already been affixed to covers. These were cancelled with a circular FLIGHT ABORTED cancel and 21 February 1979, as illustrated in Figure 2. Some of the labels not affixed to covers were overprinted in red with a boxed FLIGHT ABORTED strike. An example of this cancel is illustrated in Figure 3.

The label measures 55mm x 82mm and is imperforate on all four sides. Coloured green and white, it features a map of Antarctica, the Scouts Australia logo, and the text: FIRST FLIGHT BOEING 707 SYDNEY TO ANTARCTICA / SECOND SCOUT ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1979 / 21 FEBRUARY, 1979. Another label was also issued by Simpson to recognise a forthcoming 1979 Antarctic Expedition, this time to the Admiralty Mountains, on 8 December 1979. Measuring 57mm x 68mm and imperforate on all four sides, the gold foil and dark blue label features the text: Foundation 41 / ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION TO THE ADMIRALTY MOUNTAINS / 8TH DECEMBER, 1979. Foundation 41 was a medical research organisation based at the Crown Street Women’s Hospital, Sydney. Akin to the

Bill Hornadge
Above: Figure 4
The earliest examples of Right : Figure 3 Australian Antarctica labels are those produced by famed cinderella giant Bill Hornadge. His Antarctic efforts were in celebration of the 1954 Australian Expedition to Antarctica, which was Australia’s first attempt at establishing a permanent Antarctica base. A range of different cinderellas were issued and, collectively, covered four different motifs designed by Sydney-based artist Monty Wedd: Scene 1) The Kista Dan Expedition vessel
Figure 5
Scene 2) Map of Antarctica with two polar explorers Scene 3) A group of penguins Scene 4) A Polar exploration plane over a base camp Bill Hornadge initially produced these four scenes in perforated sheets of 20 (5 x 4). Four colours exist: Scene 1) Red Scene 2) Yellow Scene 3) Purple Scene 4) Green Colour variations exist across all four labels, with the most prominent being a pink/red variety in Scene 1, which has been suggested to be an experimental colour. An example of a complete sheet of the perforated purple Scene 3 is illustrated in Figure 5. Each sheet measures approximately 195mm x 150mm, with individual labels measuring approximately 41mm x 26mm. Some of the labels in the set also have rough perforations, and an example Stamp News - 7

of a complete sheet of the green Scene 4 is illustrated in Figure 6. A set of the four labels was sold for 9d., with an example of the original and unopened packaging illustrated in Figure 7. It contains an insert with the following text: 4 / ANTARCTICA SOUVENIRS / 9d. / Complete set of souvenir stickers isseud to commemorate the 1954 Australian expedition to Antarctica. They had no postal validity but were attached to First Day covers sent to Antarctica by philatelists. Of note, this insert misspells the word ‘issued’ as ‘isseud’.
Following the release of the perforated set of four different Antarctica souvenir labels, Bill Hornadge issued a second set of the same four scenes but with different colours. This change included the removal of the Scene 2 yellow colour, which was deemed an erroneous choice and too difficult to see. These cinderellas were rouletted, rather than perforated. Using the same Scene numbers listed before, colours were: Scene 1) Green Scene 2) Red Scene 3) Blue Scene 4) Purple Like the perforated versions, colour variations exist, especially in the blue and purple types. Also like the perforated versions, the rouletted ones were also sold in 9d packets of four, with an example of an unopened packet illustrated in Figure 8. It also contains an insert, with the following text: 4 / ANTARCTICA SOUVENIRS / 9d. / Complete set of four souvenir stickers issued for the 1954 Australian expedition to Antarctica. The stickers had no postal validity but were attached to First Day covers sent to Antarctica by philatelists. They are interesting souvenirs of Australian Polar expedition. The text on this insert is more elaborate than the first issue’s, and also corrects the ‘isseud’ misspelling. In September 2020, the Cinderella Stamp Club

Vito Milana of Australasia Chair, Mr. Wilson Illbery of New South Wales, informed me that he spoke to Bill Hornadge about these labels and their varieties. Bill explained to Wilson that the perforated labels were produced and mainly sold overseas, to Europe and the USA, with the intention of exchanging the sales for foreign currencies. Most of these went to Seymour Friedlander of Zenith Stamps in the USA, and to Broadway Approvals, in the UK. Following successful sales of these labels, with many thousands sold, Bill decided to print more Antarctica cinderellas in rouletted and imperforated sheets, noting that these were cheaper options. Alongside the second release of the labels, Bill also re-released a limited number of rouletted and imperforated versions of the original perforated types. An example of a full sheet of the red Scene 2 cinderella (rouletted) is illustrated in Figure 9, and an example of a full sheet of the red Scene 2 cinderella (imperforate) is illustrated in Figure 10. The Hornadge Antarctica labels were also affixed on several Seven Seas advertising items, which was owned by Bill Hornadge at the time, and examples are illustrated in Figures 11 and 12. Alongside the coloured labels, Bill Hornadge also issued, in 1954, the four scene types in a black and white minisheet, as illustrated in Figure 13. The minisheet features the red header: Souvenir of stickers prepared for attachment to mail carried on the 1954 Australian Expedition to Antarctica. An example of one of these labels (Scene 3) affixed to the front of a 17 November 1954 (NSW) cancelled cover is illustrated in Figure 14. Short-lived South Australian advertising labels’ producer FAMEFACE, of Novelty Printing, printed cinderellas from 1994, and one of their largest clients was Bill Hornadge. An example of the six labels, as a complete block, is illustrated in Figure 15. Each label measures approximately 43mm x 28mm and is perforated 11 on all four sides. Four of the six labels reproduce Scenes 1 to 4, but this time in different colour configurations to the first and second 1954 printings. These 1994 colours are: Scene 1) Brown Scene 2) Blue Scene 3) Green Scene 4) Yellow The fifth and six labels feature black text on yellow background. These read: Label 5) ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION ANNIVERSARY / FameFace Label 6) Souvenir stamps issued in 1994 to mark the 40th Anniversary of the 1954 Australian Expedition which established permanent bases in Antarctica. / FameTable 1. Conclusion
Figure 14 The 1994 labels were printed in sheets of 36 (6 x 6), with each sheet comprising of six sets of six labels. Each complete sheet measures 297mm x 210mm with the words Antarctica Expedition in the top left selvedge, and Novelty Printing / FAME FACE PO Box 467 / Willianstown / SA 5531 / Phone / Fax: / 08 – 85246859 presented in top right selvedge. A final more modern release of the Antarctica Scenes 1 to 4 was created in 2004. This imperforate item reproduces the 1954 black and white sheetlet, expect it is reduced in size, and the text is coloured black. An example of the sheetlet, affixed to the front of an Antarctic Ships’ cover, is illustrated in Figure 15. The cover features a 20 January 2004 USA cancel, and a 6 February 2004 Australian one. Table 1 summarises the Bill Hornadge Antarctica Scenes cinderella labels, excluding the modern 2004 sheetlet, as it is unlikely to have been produced
Australian-produced cinderellas that explore some of the wonders of the Antarctic, including early flights over some of its vast landscapes, are few, yet those that exist capture some the remarkable feats by early pioneers who navigated the territory. I extend my thanks to the following individuals (in no particular order) for offering me information in helping to craft this article: Wilson Illbery, Tony Shields, David Figg, and John Youle. Thank you to my readers and those who have offered feedback and commendations along this seven year cinderella journey. I wish you all well.

Pride of UK
Reported at www.theguardian.com On 1 July 1972 a crowd of people gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square and marched to Hyde Park chanting “Gay is fun! Gay is proud! Gay is beautiful!”. It was not the first march for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK but it was the first rally in the UK with the name “Gay Pride”, inspired by Pride events in the US. Fifty years on, Royal Mail is commemorating the landmark event with a set of eight stamps which carry vibrantly coloured illustrations of typical scenes at Pride events, which are now an annual fixture at cities across the world. A Royal Mail spokesman said: “The vibrant, colourful Pride events that take place in towns and cities across the UK today trace their origins to a small number of people who marched through central London half a century ago to raise awareness of discrimination and inequality.”

Thrilling Adventures in Stamps Reported at www.comics.org
In the 1950s Youthful Publications (loosely associated with DC Comics) brought out a new series of comics based on notable stamps. The premise behind Stamp Comics was simple and clever: each story would take an important postage stamp from throughout history and tell the tale that the stamp represented. As an editorial in issue #1 explained: “It has been truly said that stamps are the mirror of history. In this book we have attempted to give you some of
collecting stamps. Now, for the first time, the Postal Museum is to put one of Mercury’s albums on show – its value enhanced as it is one of the late rock star’s rare personal possessions in museum ownership. The stamps that the young Mercury grouped together are unusually shaped into patterns on each page, and will be on view to the museum’s visitors in July as part of the city’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Pride movement in Britain. Mercury, who died of Aids in 1991, was born Farrokh Bulsara in Tanzania in 1946. He spent his early life in Zanzibar, where his father, Bomi, worked for the British Colonial Office. Mercury inherited his father’s passion for stamps and is thought to have collected between the ages of nine and 12. “The real value of this collection is not in the stamps themselves but in its rich historical value and connection to one of the world’s greatest ever entertainers” said the museum’s curator. Bomi Bulsara auctioned his son’s stamps, together with his own, in 1993, with the proceeds going to the Aids charity set up in the singer’s memory, Mercury Phoenix Trust. Stamp News - 13

Youthful promoted the series at collector conventions, and it was promoted in numerous collecting trade journals and advertised in other magazines. It was a wholesome idea at a time when the mainstream took a very dim view of the comic book industry, but sadly, it only lasted for eight issues. Tusass, the postal administration of Greenland, has continued the Ghost Stories in Greenland series with two new stamps featuring designs from the book Bestiarium Groenlandica. The 2k stamp shows AMU, a helpful spirit with a big head and large, shiny eyes, which persistently screams: ‘Amuuuu! Amuuuu!’ The 24k stamp shows Qarlimaatsoq, or the dead one. Qarlimaatsoq is a thoroughly desiccated corpse whose head is completely black. It usually lives in graves and, upon rising from a grave, assumes the appearance of northern lights in the sky. The stamps can be purchased online through the Tusass website.

Olivera has been described as unconventional: “Not every molecular biologist would think to look in cone snail venom for potential therapeutics. But a long-held interest in the biological environment while growing up in the Philippines—and a habit of making unconventional choices—led Baldomero ‘Toto’ Olivera to do just that.” After completing his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology and postdoctoral research at Stanford University, Olivera returned to the Philippines to establish his independent research program. Now at the University of Utah, Olivera has discovered several peptides in snail venom that have reached human clinical trials. One has been approved for the treatment of severe pain. While building a productive research program, he also was developing new ways to educate and inspire future generations of scientists in the U.S. and the Philippines. The campaign will use social media to encourage people to back the effort. “We want everybody across the world to keep the excitement going and asking all of you to help us. The first thing you need to know is that the social media hashtag starting today will be ‘give the champ the stamp.’” How long does it take to get a new image on a U.S. postage stamp? Getting Ali’s face on postage stamps will not happen overnight. Redress for dress at wrong address Reported at www.birminghammail.co.uk
A bride-to-be left distraught when her wedding dress vanished after being delivered to the wrong address has been reunited with her dream gown. But she was left heartbroken after discovering Royal Mail had delivered it to the wrong address where it had had been signed for. The 27-year-old, from Lichfield, posted a social media appeal, knocked on neighbours’ doors and even searched in local bins for the dress, bought off eBay as a ‘one of a kind’. Katie is due to marry Andrew, 30, a fellow sheep farmer, early next year. She said Royal Mail officials initially told her the location of the delivered dress was around two miles away and that it might take up to 10 days to track down. But thanks to the heroics of a dedicated postal worker at Lichfield sorting office, she was reunited with her dress the next day. “One of the colleagues at Lichfield sorting office saw the Facebook post. She sent someone round to fetch it out of someone’s porch where it had been left and brought it directly to my house.” A relieved Katie praised the power of social media in helping reunite her with her dress. She said: “It’s surprising what social media can do.”

The USPS box containing Moffet’s ashes was clearly marked in orange, with large capital letters: “Cremated Remains.” The box was shipped Priority Mail Express, which guarantees next-day to two days at a flat rate, and was designated specifically for cremated remains. A USPS spokesperson said in an email statement: “The Postal Service apologizes to Ms. Johnson for the concern she and her family have experienced during this difficult time. Local management will be in touch with Ms. Johnson to discuss any issues she has with delivery of the cremains.”
Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for August 2022. This month’s column looks at current Canadian postal stationery, recent Australia Post issues and postal stationery news. Current Canada Postal Stationery While visiting Capex 22 in Toronto in June, I was able to visit a number of Canada Post outlets to see what postal stationery they were currently selling. There were some similarities in the range of postal stationery offered by Australia Post with the main items being prepaid express post items, stamped envelopes and prepaid postcards. The Canada Post domestic express post service is called Xpresspost. Cardboard envelopes are issued for use to regional addresses (in the case of those sold in Toronto that is Ontario and Quebec, Next-day service to most urban centres, Figure 1) and to addresses anywhere in the country (‘National’, 2-day service to major urban centres, Figure 2). Envelopes are issued in three sizes (small 260 x 159 mm, medium 318 x 241 mm and large 394 x 314 mm) for both Regional and National use. Prices start at $15.05 for regional delivery and $22.70 for national delivery. There is also a range of bubble bags (Figure 3) in two sizes and again for both regional and national use. There have been many printings of these envelopes distinguishable for the current designs by printing numbers and the presence/absence of various logos on the address side of the envelopes. For example, the envelope shown in Figure 1 Small Regional Xpresspost Envelope Figure 1 Small National Xpresspost Envelope Figure 3 Regional Bubble Xpresspost Envelope 20 - Stamp News

Figure 4 has a printing number of 20-08 shown at the bottom right-hand corner. For the purposes of these envelopes the regions are: Atlantic (Atlantic provinces), Central (Ontario and Quebec), Western (British Columbia and the prairie provinces), Nunavut East, Nunavut West, Northwest Territories and Yukon. A faster service is provided by using Priority envelopes (Figure 5) which provides guaranteed delivery by the specified times. Envelopes are provided in two sizes and again for national and regional use (39.4 x 31.4 x 3 cm and 31.8 x 24.1 x 1.5 cm). Prices start at $48.05. There is a catalogue of Canadian express post and similar postal stationery available on-line at the British North America Philatelic Society (BNAPS) website at https://bnaps.org/ore/WaltonCovert-PSC/ WaltonCovert-PSC_Contents.htm. The catalogue covers issues up to about 2016.
Canada Post also sells a range of prepaid boxes in three sizes (35cm x 26 cm x 5cm, 39 cm x 26 cm x 12 cm and 40 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm) for national use for parcels up to 5 kg (Figure 6). Canada Post sells a range of prepaid postcards (Figure 7-8) primarily aimed at the tourist market. Like Australia Post, the range of postcards sold at each outlet varies considerably. One outlet had postcards primarily of views of Toronto and nearby areas of Ontario such as Niagara on the Lake while another had a broader range from other provinces including views of Vancouver, Winnipeg and Montreal. These postcards are produced in an arrangement with a private company, The Postcard Factory, and have been issued since 1997. Many hundred of views have been issued since then with many changes in indicium, image format and in the inscriptions. All pay postage anywhere in the World (Figure 9). There can also sometimes be found for sale at Stamp News - 21

newsagents and stationery stores. Many of the views are also found on unstamped postcards produced by the Postcard Factory. Other pre-paid postcards have been issued in conjunction with adhesive stamp issues. These usually have an indicium similar in design to the adhesive stamps. A set of five pre-paid postcards was on sale 22 - Stamp News
at the Canada Post stand at Capex 22 with designs of travel posters (Figure 10-11). Stamped envelopes are available. A pack of ten envelopes was available depicting flowers (Figure 12). These designs have been in use since 2012. Over that time the envelopes have been through many printings and printed by a number of printers. The printings can be identified by printing date usually on the reverse of the envelope and by the presence or otherwise of a barcode and the various logos on the reverse of the envelope (Figure 13). The current envelope was printed by Colour Innovations. There is a comprehensive listing of these post-

cards and other Canadian postal stationery in the Webb’s Postal Stationery Catalogue of Canada Newfoundland (8th Edition, 2019) edited by Earle Covert and William Walton (Figure 14). Postal Stationery at the Capex 22 International World Stamp Exhibition Capex 22 was an international one-frame exhibition held in Toronto from 9-12 June 2022. There were nineteen postal stationery exhibits. The best in class was won by an exhibit of the registered envelopes issued for use in British post offices in China. These envelopes are Hong Kong envelopes overprinted ‘CHINA’. There were three exhibits from Australian exhibitors showing New South Wales Embossed Stationery 1838-1850, Victoria’s
ordinary envelopes after Federation and Gold Coast One Penny Postcard of 1892 and Its’s Usage. There were also two exhibitors from New Zealand showing King George V 1½ d lettercards and Japan New Year Lottery Greetings Cards. There are many postal Stamp News - 23
Postal Stationery stationery topics which well suit a oneframe exhibit and it is certainly worth trying. Australia Post Pre-Paid Postcards April - June 2022 Two prepaid postcards were issued on 5 April 2022 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and a single postcard on 26 April 2022 for the Centenary of the Country Women’s Association. Three postcards were issued on 12 April 2022 under the theme ‘Postcards to the Front’ showing Kookaburras wearing the hats of the army, navy and air force. Three prepaid postcards were issued on 3 May 2022 featuring Aboriginal Fibre Art (Figure 15) by Yolŋu women of Gapuwiyak in north-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Represented on the stamps is art by Lucy Malirrimurruwuy Wanapuyngu, Mary Djupuduwuy Guyula

and by Nancy Walinyinawuy Guyula. On 24 May 2022, three prepaid postcards were issued showing ‘bush seasoning’ plants (Figure 16): Mountain Pepper (Tasmania lanceolata), River Mint (Mentha australis), and Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora. Megapodes of Australia was the theme of three prepaid postcards issued on 7 June 2022. The cards feature the Australian Brush Turkey (Figure 17), a familiar bird of many East Coast cities, the Mallee Fowl found mainly in mallee habitat in western New South Wales and Victoria, and the Orange-footed Scrub Fowl, a bird of the northern tropics. A prepaid postcard was issued on 14 June 2022 titled ‘In Memoriam: HRH Prince Philip’. Postal Stationery at Newcastle 2022 The was no national postal stationery class at Newcastle 22 held at the Newcastle showground in May 2022. There were, however, two exhibits as part of a challenge between the ‘Royal’ Societies. Mike Smith
exhibited the postal Stationery of the Orange Free State which received a large gold medal and was a nominee for the Best in Show Award. It is an outstanding exhibit and I hope you took the opportunity to view it. Malcolm Groom exhibited Tasmanian Embossed Postal Stationery and received a Gold medal/ The Postal Stationery Society of Australia had a meeting at the exhibition which was attended by ten people who were treated to a display of Peter Kowald’s New South Wales Postal Cards issued for use by the New South Wales railways presented by Dingle Smith (Figure 18). Future International Exhibitions Entries are now open for IBRA 2023 World Stamp Exhibition which will be held on 25-28 May 2022 at Essen Germany. Information about the exhibition can be found at https://ibra2023.de. Entries should be sent to me at ian.mcmahon4@bigpond.com by 16 September 2022.

Stamp News - 47
Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation This month we present the second instalment of the three-part article from Darryl Fuller on the myriad of sources from where to obtain material for your collection and an update of forthcoming exhibitions.
Where do I get Material for my Collection? “The fun is in the chase” eBay (continued) The following are some ideas in getting the best out of eBay, but always remembering the maxim – ‘If it’s too good to be true it probably isn’t.’ They are based on my 23 years of experience on eBay. • If you are new to eBay it pays to follow a few auction items and sellers without bidding to see what happens. This is true of any auction that you attend for the first time. Many first-time bidders have rued getting carried away early in their bidding history. • Check the comments in a seller’s feedback comments. Some sellers are definitely to be avoided. In addition, be cautious with sellers with low numbers of feedbacks. They may be genuinely new to eBay but are sometimes sellers with bad reputations that have ‘rebirthed’ themselves. Once you are ready to start searching on eBay it is important to remember that sellers come from a range of backgrounds so spelling and terminology can be an issue. Not all sellers have English as a first language. A very common misspelling is stationary for stationery. Another very common issue is Air Mail versus Airmail. The eBay search engines will not pick up both unless you include both. In the past eBay searches allowed the use of a wildcard in searches 48 - Stamp News
so you could search using an * as a wild card e.g. station*ry would pick up both versions of the word. Unfortunately, eBay removed this feature many years ago, to their loss I believe. Search Strings (Keywords) - When searching it pays to use a search string that includes the terms you want to search for, not something generic like the word Australia. Remember you don’t need to type in the search string each time, as you can save searches to use.
Figure 7
Russell Boylan
Philatelic Development Officer, APF The best option when searching is to use eBay’s advanced option which is in a small grey font to the right of the search box. It shows you the page shown in Figure 7. When coming up with a search string it pays to be as inclusive as possible without making the string too long. For example, I collect Israel revenue stamps and other items. If I use the term Israel revenues, and use both auction and buy it now options in the Stamp category and search worldwide then I get 747 hits. If I change the search to All Categories I only get 705 hits. This I cannot explain - it is one of the vagaries of eBay. However, not all Israel revenue stamps are listed as revenues, so a longer search string is suggested, as follows: Israel (revenue, revenues, tax, fiscal, fee, document, license, licence, label, cigarette, consular, agra, receipt, ticket) The search engine then searches for the combination of the words Israel and each word in brackets separately, so you end up with a longer list. In this case you get 7,037 items listed, many of which are not relevant. You can multiple search strings based on your areas of interest. Another one of my interests are commercial air mail covers sent between islands in the Caribbean and also from Central and South America to the Caribbean. Such searches can be tricky and time consuming and even using the term airmail does not pick up all such material. I use two approaches to this. A standard search string with a group of islands in brackets with the word cover outside the bracket. This works well in most cases. I also use another approach that allows multiple combinations, as follows: (Cuba, Haiti, Dominican, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Curacao, Martinique) (Antigua,
Figure 8
Bahamas, Bermuda, British Guiana, British Honduras, Barbados, Cayman, Dominica, Jamaica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Vincent, Turks, Virgin, Trinidad) This string will find all the combinations of islands where two of the islands are listed – one from each set of brackets. You will soon learn your way around strings that work well. Stamp News - 49

Figure 9
The other area to consider is whether you search only the Stamps category or All Categories. If your interests go beyond stamps, say revenue material, then it pays to search more widely. This is also true for airmail ephemera such as airline timetables (Figure 8). Search Including - In this section you can search titles and descriptions or sold listings if you are doing research. However, I tend to not tick the titles and description box for stamps, and especially not the term airmail, because you inevitably end up with a million listings because airmail is often included in the description relating to postage of the lot. Buying Formats – always tick both Auction and Buy It Now or you will miss many items for sale. Show Results – I find for philately that you don’t need to limit your searches by using any of these selections. Location – This is an important part of searches. It can considerably expand the list of items you get. If you only search on ebay. 50 - Stamp News
com.au then you will not necessarily see everything in your area of interest that is for sale on eBay worldwide. You will often get a listing of items for sale on the Australian site and an extra list of items for sale worldwide, but not necessarily all. My preferred method of searching is to use the US site ebay.com and to use this checkbox. You click on this checkbox and from the dropdown list you pick worldwide. This should give you the widest selection of material. Sellers – You can use this to search your favourite sellers. This is useful if your seller has specialised material that you are interested in, that few others sell. Sort by – I use this function, but have it list Time: Newly Listed first NOT Best Match because eBay algorithms are not good at knowing what a best match with philately is. Once you have done the above you will end up with a long list of results, although the first time you do it, it is often best to use the Time: ending soonest in the Sort by checkbox, just in case something you have been searching for is
Russell Boylan
Philatelic Development Officer, APF about to end. I also recommend that you look through all the results to get an idea of what is listed. If the list is too long, say 5,000 or more, it may pay to shorten the search string. It may take some hours to look through the listing, but you can add any items of interest to a watch list. The box for this is just under the bid box or buy it now box in the listing (Figure 9). The reason to search through all the listings and mark items of interest, is that you only really need to do it once. Once you have your search listing if you put the list with the newest listing at the top and actually go into that listing, then the eBay cookies mark that item (see Figure 10) in a different coloured font (reddy-purple). When you search the next day for new items, then you only need start at the top of the listing and go down till you come across the changed font colour listing. In that case you will only need to look through 30 or 40 listings not 3,000 each day. This habit can save you a lot of time. Once you have worked through the system and have refined your searches for items of interest then the decision to start buying comes into play. Although I would note that eBay can
be a useful site for researching philately as well. If an item is Buy It Now or Make An Offer, then you simply need to decide if the price is right, or you make an offer at a lower or higher price. However, if it is an auction you then need to decide how to bid. This is where many people come unstuck, I feel. There are a number of ways people bid. Some decide a maximum price they will pay and place the bid and wait. This can be an expensive way to bid. Others put in bids till they have the highest bid. They then monitor the lot and bid again if their bid is topped. This too can be an expensive exercise. Others will wait to bid until the lot is closing, and while this is a better way to bid, it often means staying up late at night waiting for an international item to finish. Generally, it is not worth the effort. Smart bidders use a snipe program – a program in which a computer places your bid in the last few seconds of bidding. This is why you see a bid or bids so often in the last few seconds of bidding, which you cannot top because time runs out. I strongly recommend using snipe bidding. Some snipe programs are free, but I use one with an annual fee that has
Figure 10 Stamp News - 51
Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation proven most useful and has never failed me over at least a decade or more. (I won’t give out its details here but if you are interested in snipe programs google them or send me an email.) The advantage of snipe bidding is that noone can bid you up over a few days which may happen if you simply put your top bid in and leave it. There are bidders (including shill bidders) who push up prices, sometimes just testing the market and other times to make you pay more. Snipe bidding can save you serious money this way as your top bid is not in until the last minute. The other advantage of snipe programs is that they send you an email if your proposed bid has already been topped, giving you an opportunity to raise it before it is bid. So in general, this is how I bid. If I see a lot I am interested in, say a moderately priced airmail cover with a starting price of $9.99 that I think is worth $10-15 I usually just put in a bid in that range without sniping, particularly if I am not overly worried about buying the item above such a price. However, if is an item that I think is scarce or rare and worth many times the starting price that is when I snipe. If I am willing to pay $500 for a lot starting at $9.99 then I will put in a snipe bid and will often get it at a fraction of what I was willing to pay. However, I also take another approach that I think helps. I don’t put in a bid of $500, I put in something like $505.89. Why do I do this? Well if two people put in a bid of $500 then first in wins. However, eBay raises bids by fixed amounts at various increments, so at $500 I think it is $5. This means that someone out there will put in a bid of $505, so that they are not caught in the $500 equal bid problem. I take this one step further and add a small very odd amount because the odds 52 - Stamp News
of two people doing the exact same amount is small. Although I did once win an eBay lot by 1 cent! Another good approach to bidding on lots that you have serious interest in is to use a place bid. What I mean by this is that if I am going to bid on an item, I think is very rare, I put a low bid in to make sure the lot has at least one bid. This, generally but not always, stops a seller pulling the lot from sale. Why would a seller pull a lot? - usually because they receive a non-eBay offer to pull the lot and sell it to that person. This happened to me in 2016 when I was looking at eBay late at night when I was in New York for their big exhibition. Three lots of very rare Israel revenue stamps popped up some of which I had not seen before. I was going to put place bids on but thought, its late, I’ll do it tomorrow. The next day I looked and the three lots had disappeared. I couldn’t find them on eBay at all, either as sold or otherwise. What had almost certainly happened was that the vendor received an off-eBay offer and pulled the lots as they had no bids (relatively easy). Not only did I have no chance to bid but I had no chance to even record the lots. Some vendors won’t send lots to foreign countries, pure laziness I feel when it is a country like Australia, so the only way to bid will be to find a friend in another country or the USA who will bid on your behalf. Postage – Make sure you check the postage cost of sending a lot before bidding. In cases like books you know the cost will be high, often as much as the book or even more. However, eBay has automated postage systems set up that some sellers use, and these often have very high prices for sending a lot. In many cases the cost of mailing a small item from the USA to
Russell Boylan
Philatelic Development Officer, APF Australia, by tracked mail is $18.95. Whereas if they just put the lot in a regular envelope and sent it, it would cost about $2. Some vendors will take a reasonable approach if asked, but others go with the eBay system and must lose sales this way. Research – I have said it before but to re-emphasise, eBay is a useful research tool whether buying, selling or simply researching. I find it useful to do searches on sold listings as this sometimes shows up material that you have not seen when searching the listings for sale. This could be because a ‘Buy It Now’ item sold very quickly, but sometimes it is something that did not show up on the initial eBay search of items for sale. I am unsure why this happens, but no computer algorithm is perfect. However, it is important to do it every few weeks as eBay listings drop off fairly quickly. It pays to record items of interest to your research. I find the easiest method is to do a screen grab, so that you get all the information about the item. This discussion on eBay has been somewhat long but I hope that it gives you some ideas on getting the best from eBay buying. If you take some of the above approaches you will save money. eBay has been both a boon (in finding obscure material) and a bane (outright fakes etc) to philately. However, without it I wouldn’t have a great collection of Israel revenue material. The material I need just does not appear at dealers or in larger auctions (with rare exceptions). So, if you are careful and use a sensible approach, it can be a great source of material not easily found elsewhere. (This section on eBay was longer than I had originally envisaged but given its (relative) importance to philately I felt it needed a detailed discussion. The next issue will continue with this article and will cover many other ways to obtain material for your collection.)

THULE & ITS POSTAGE STAMPS People from the Nordic region have always been intrepid travelers. Vikings from Sweden travelled eastwards and traded with what later became Russia. Vikings from Denmark and Norway sailed towards the British Isles and France and some even all the way to Sicily in the Mediterranean. All this happened more than a thousand years ago. Vikings from Norway sailed westwards and discovered Iceland in 874 if we are to believe the old Icelandic sagas or chronicles. In 930 the world’s first parliament was established in Iceland; this was an annual meeting of the heads of the island’s most important families and it was here that disputes were settled. In 992 Leif Eriksson was forced to leave Iceland and he and his followers sailed westwards discovering Greenland. They settled in the south of this huge island where they built farms and churches.

But Leif Eriksson was an adventurous man and he wanted to find out what was beyond Greenland. In about 1000 he reached today’s Newfoundland which he referred to as Vinland (Land of Wine). Archeological finds of a Viking settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows have been made. This early settlement didn’t last for long but it proves that Norsemen discovered America long before the epic journey of Christopher Columbus in 1492. At around the same time as the Norsemen established their settlements in the southern part of Greenland, Inuits from Alaska had arrived in the North-Western part of the island where they made a living hunting. This part of Greenlandic history is known as the Thule Culture period. More than a century ago a fairly large number of Nordic explorers travelled to the Arctic region and to Antarctica trying to be the first ones to reach the North Pole and the South Pole.
Figure 2
Christer Brunström Danish polar explorer and writer Knud Rasmussen (1879-1933) established a missionary and trading station at Thule on Greenland’s north-western coast in 1910. He spent a lot of time travelling all over Greenland collecting not only information but also Inuit artifacts. Back home in Denmark he wrote books about his experiences in Greenland and this helped him to partly finance his many expeditions. A few years ago I travelled to Hundested on Zealand in Denmark where Rasmussen had a cottage built at a spot overlooking the Kattegat Sea. To get away from the hustle and bustle of Copenhagen this cottage offered him the peace and tranquility needed to write his books. Today the house is a museum celebrating his life and work. Close to the house there is a large memorial monument built with stones from different parts of Greenland. To celebrate the Thule station’s 25th anniversary

in 1935 a set of four stamps was issued on August 8, 1935. The set comprised the following values and designs: 10 øre - Portrait of Knud Rasmussen (Fig. 1), 15 øre - The Danish flag with the Thule Mountain in the background (Fig. 2), 30-øre – Walruses (Fig. 4) and 45 øre - Cape York (Fig. 5). On August 10, 1936 there was an additional 25-øre stamp featuring the church at Thule (Fig. 3). The stamps were valid on mail between Thule and the Cape York Office in Copenhagen, Denmark. For letters to other destinations Danish postage stamps had to be added. Within Greenland mail was carried free of charge at the time. First Day Covers were prepared both in 1935 and 1936 and they are still readily available today. Genuine commercial Thule mail with the correct Danish postage added is very scarce indeed. The Thule stamps were perforated but a very small quantity was also released imperforate. They

Such stamps should only be acquired from dealers who know what they are offering. The Thule Postal Service was of course a private one but the stamps are generally included in collections of Greenland stamps. The stamps lost their validity when the Greenland Administration took over the Thule district on August 1, 1937. Thus ended a most interesting period in Greenlandic postal history. In 1960 Greenland issued a 30-øre stamp (Fig. 6) featuring a portrait of Knud Rasmussen and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Thule. Nothing much happened in the Thule region

until the US military began taking an interest in the area in the early 1940s. The US Air Force established a large base at Pituffik and the first planes arrived in 1951 after many years of planning and construction. During the peak of the Cold War, more than 3.300 US servicemen lived and worked at the Thule Air Base. Today some 200 US military specialists are based at Thule. For the local Inuit population the building of the US base led to a great change. In 1953, the entire Inuit population was moved to Qaanaaq some 75 miles to the north of Cape York. What about today’s market for the Thule stamps? By shopping around I believe that a fine used or MNH set can be had for some $20-30. A lightly hinged mint set can probably be had for around $10.
