Roo 1915 SECOND Watermark 2½d fresh Interpanneau Block 4 - 2 x MUH: The rather uncommon Bluish Indigo shade, on this Emergency WWI Printing on the KGV heads watermark paper. MVLH on top two stamps, and lower 2 are superb flat, super fresh *MUH*. ACSC 10b cat. $1,800 as 4 singles. Blocks of this Watermark are RARE. Nicely centred, with full perfs, and most attractive as you can see. Interpanneau pieces are highly sought and VERY scarce. Bought very well, so UNDER half Cat for 4 singles, at just $US620 as I type, at $A899 (Stock 782KQ)

1913 9d Violet First Wmk Roo with ‘BRISBANE QUEENSLAND’ CTO: This distinctive CTO cancel is rare, and ACSC tells us only 1 sheet of each value was thus cancelled, and of those sheets, PO Archives still have many examples still on file of most values. This one has the sheet watermark line horizontally along base, which proves it is from lowest row of sheet. Plate Variety 24(2)r only occurs from that lower row of course. Arthur Gray’s NO variety 9d was invoiced for $845 on estimate $300, when ACSC values were much lower. Mine importantly, has the tell-tale start of the ‘3.15 PM’ time date slug that all these BRISBANE stamps have if genuine. Also this one has the ACSC variety ‘Break In Coast Of Gulf Of Carpentaria’ - ACSC 24(2)r. That is ACSC cat 5 times a normal stamp, so on BRISBANE CTO will be $3,000, and of course is UNIQUE, as only one sheet of each was done. An ugly, humble 1913 ½d green Roo, no variety, ACSC #1wd, was invoiced way above est at $2,675 in the Phoenix, Nov 15, 2019. An equally humble 2d Grey, also with no date on the cds, was invoiced $A2,900 same sale. And that was when ACSC values were much lower than today. Clean and flat and bright and fresh, no hinge remains, aging or faults, ACSC 24wd $600 for any condition BRISBANE cto. With the constant plate variety ACSC 24(2)r it is Cat $3,000. $A750 (Stock 681JE)

Collection is 100% complete from SG #1 to mid 1990s, at retail of those is $1,237.10 all neatly erasable 4B pen tallied on each page for your very easy checking. LOTS more pages shown here - www.tinyurl.com/ PitColn - Very clean Estate superb bargain, to clear fast at $900 under retail! In 1980 I ran 2 facing page ads here as ‘The Pitcairn King.’ This tiny country, with tiny print numbers was RED hot. The 1948 Silver Wedding sold for $750 a set, and 10 sets for $7,000 - and they sold well at that. The 1949 UPU was $400 a set etc. This entire book costs way less than a Silver Wedding readily sold for $A600 (Stock 665WP)

AUSTRALIA : 1860s TO WWI Part 18 ix. Philatelic Publishers & Publications The New South Wales Stamp Collectors’ Magazine The item below refers to the second series of the journal, launched by Dawson A Vindin [refer pages 10-15], then aged 14, following upon his acquisition of Buckley, Blunsum & Co [refer pages 7-9], who published the first series (December 1879-February 1880) of the same name. Vindin’s publication survived but one edition, August 1882.

Explaining the five-month gap between the first and second issues of the journal, in what was to have been a monthly publication, Buckley stated in the second issue (April 1880): “Five months since we made our appearance in a neat cover, fondly hoping and foolishly believing the collectors of Australian colonies would rally round...”

The dilemma facing the pioneer Philatelic Publishers in the Australian Colonies is apparent in the comments made by Edward Buckley, editor of the inaugural New South Wales Stamp Collectors’ Magazine.

Buckley’s strain continued with issue three, in April 1881: “Now we make a third appeal to the colonial philatelist, to see if they are willing to subscribe 2/- a year for a quarterly. I¾ heartily thank the thirty-two enterprising friends who favoured us with their names as subscribers.”

Stamps in the News - Globally! Delivering the goods in Singapore Reported at www.channelnewsasia.com

Meet Singaporean postman Shahruddin Datok, who braves Pulau Ubin’s hilly terrain and wildlife to deliver mail to the island’s 30 residents Over the course of his four years as the island’s sole postman, the 66-yearold, has had close brushes with wild boars, aggressive dogs and troops of monkeys. Being out in the wild has taught him invaluable lessons including how to slip mail carefully into letterboxes in case a snake is coiled up inside and how to get monkeys to stop hurling coconuts down from trees so that he can pass through safely. As part of his job, Shahruddin takes the ferry to Pulau Ubin up to three times a week, where he braves hilly terrains to deliver mail to residents of the island. He does this entirely on foot, trekking to far-flung areas of the 1,020-hectare island with a bag of mail slung across his shoulders. “I prefer to walk because if you’re on a bicycle, your hands aren’t free and so you can’t really protect yourself from being attacked by monkeys or wild boars,” he said, gesturing to his trusty wooden stick which he carries around in case he needs to defend himself. Recalling his first few months on the job, he said he once spotted a cobra slithering across a road from afar. “I had to pass through that road to deliver mail, so I waited until the snake was gone before continuing.“ While the prospects of encountering a wildlife attack might put off some, Shahruddin believes that it’s the perfect job for him. After working for Singapore Post as a postman for more than three decades, the 66-year-old decided to apply for the part-time Pulau Ubin position after retiring in 2018. 12 - Stamp News

“I wanted a job that was a bit more relaxed and this part-time job only requires five hours (a day) to deliver mail,” he said. Besides shorter working hours, the calm serenity of Pulau Ubin and the idea of being surrounded by serene views and lush greenery also appealed to him. But with some houses located in secluded areas and hidden by overgrown shrubs and trees, things can be difficult. “Here, the house numbers are not in running order and sometimes, the house you need to deliver mail to has been demolished. “I think I only know around 85 per cent of the houses here. For the rest, I would have to go to the National Parks Board office here to find out their exact location,” he added. Despite the challenges, he laughs when asked how long he plans to keep the job. “As long as I can walk and still happy with the job, I’ll continue doing this,” he said.

I am an entomologist and study social insects like ants, bees and wasps. “It is always nice to get a handwritten letter but when I saw the address on the envelope I would never have imagined it would get to me. I just thought it was brilliant the sorting office got it to me. “It reminded me of a friend who had a letter delivered and the address was, ‘Somewhere up a hill in Dartmoor by Dave’s house. Politics of stamps: Ukraine

Reported at https://odessa-journal.com In late July Ukrposhta, the Ukraine Postal Service, started sales of a new stamp: “Good evening, we are from Ukraine!” The General Director of Ukrposhta, Igor Smelyansky, describes the stamp as “a good slap in the face for Russian ambitions.” More than 340,000 Ukrainians voted for the stamp design in a competition run by the postal service.

More than 340,000 Ukrainians voted for the sketch with the tractor on Ukrposhta’s social networks, and a total of almost 834,000 people voted for various options. Russian government newspaper Rossiskaya Gazeta, RG has published a fake image claiming it was Ukraine Postal Service’s new “antisemitic” stamp. The paper states: “Ukrposhta [Ukraine’s postal service] is preparing a new postage stamp depicting political figures who ‘played an important role in the country’s history,’ the Ukrainian media write … These figures are a symbol of militant anti-Semitism and Jewish pogroms in Ukraine in 1917-1920.” Under the headline “Bandera, Petlyura, Zelenskyy and Khrushchev - a new stamp has been released in Ukraine.” the RG said the four men pictured on the stamp “played an important role in the country’s history.” It claimed the design was inspired by Mount Rushmore in the U.S. “These figures are a symbol of militant anti-Semitism and Jewish pogroms in Ukraine in 1917-

1920,” the RG wrote. This claim has since been thoroughly debunked. Ukrposhta, Ukraine’s postal service, currently has 36 postage stamp designs on its website. The “Mount Rushmore replica” with Zelenskyy and the others published by RG is not among them. Ukrposhta has also put its proposed stamp designs for 2022 online for public view. None resembles the stamp described by RG. This has been confirmed by Ukrposhta and the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, D.C., who state that no such stamp exists. Second, Polygraph.info, academics and many other fact checkers have previously debunked Russia’s branding of the Kyiv government as a fascist, “Nazi” regime. (Pointing out, for instance, that popularly elected Ukraine President Volodymy Zelenskyy is proudly Jewish and hardly a “militant anti-Semitic.”)

Politics of stamps: India

Reported at https://currentaffairs.adda247.com India Post has released a special commemorative postage stamp to mark the 146th birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, the designer of India’s national flag. The stamp was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event “Tiranga Utsav” in New Delhi. The original design of the national flag made by Pingali Venkayya was on display at the launch. The current flag is the modified version of the first design of the flag. The Tiranga Utsav will also include the grand launch of the “Har Ghar Tiranga” anthem and video. Tiranga is the Indian name for the national flag. ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ is a campaign to encourage people to bring the Tiranga home and to hoist it to mark the 75th year of India’s independence. Bringing the flag home collectively as a nation in the 75th year of independence thus becomes symbolic as an act of personal

connection to the Tiranga but also an embodiment of citizen’s commitment to nation-building. The idea behind the initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people and to promote awareness about the Indian National Flag. Venkayya, born on August 02, 1876, near Machilipatnam town in Andhra Pradesh, was a freedom fighter and a follower of Gandhian principles. In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi approved a design during the Indian National Congress meeting in Vijayawada. The national flag that we see today was based upon his design. He was a farmer, a geologist, a lecturer at the Andhra National College in Machilipatnam, and fluent in Japanese. He became instantly famous as `Japan Venkayya`. The India Post Facebook page states: “Under the #HarGharTiranga campaign, India Post is trying to deliver Tiranga in every nook and corner of the nation. Join us in this great campaign. Visit your nearest Post Office to purchase Tiranga or order online.”

The new stamp is a modern interpretation of 1851 Merkur newspaper stamp and the associated special stamp block was released on July 1st. 2,500 CSA Mystery Boxes will be available for purchase. The CSA Mystery Boxes with four NFTs will be available exclusively on Tokapi.com beginning July 22nd, with a price of 500 euros per box. Each digital mystery box comes with four non-fungible tokens (NFTs), a special stamp block, and a physical trading card called a special art stamp. Each NFT has different colour values that are distributed with increasing rarity. The various rarities are: Red: 100 editions | 1% rarity. Yellow: 1000 editions | 10% rarity. Blue: 3000 editions | 30% rarity. Rose: 5896 editions | 58.96% rarity. Purple/Green/Turquoise/Friedrich: 1 edition each | 0.01% rarity. It should also be noted that only those who purchase the mystery boxes will receive an exclusive physical art stamp. This is a digital collector’s item with a physical counterpart, but the emphasis is on collecting digital works of art and collaborating with NFT greats. An Austrian Post spokesperson said: “There has been a generational shift in collecting. Younger people are using NFTs to make digital collectibles truly valuable and unique. It is the perfect opportunity for us to bridge the gap between physical and digital collecting with the Crypto stamp art that speaks to all generations.”

Something fishy in the US Reported at www.ecowatch.com

On Aug. 5, the USPS released a new series of Forever stamps that celebrates the rich diversity and beauty within US sanctuaries and the marine ecosystems they protect. The collection commemorates the 50th anniversary of the National Marine Sanctuary System. Marine sanctuaries protect the ecological, cultural and historical inheritance of the American people and balance those against their rights to recreate and enjoy these resources. They preserve critical habitat for threatened and endangered wildlife and safeguard the ancients rites and living traditions of Indigenous peoples who have inhabited these regions for millenia. Sanctuaries are also critical in the fight against climate change, to protect biodiversity and to meet the goals of protecting 30% of land and sea

France no longer seeing red

Reported at www.connexionfrance.com La Poste has announced that it will be discontinuing its timbre rouge red stamp on January 1, 2023. The timbre rouge is for urgent letters needing to be delivered the next working day, but demand for it has fallen in recent years. The red stamp will be replaced by a digital ‘e-lettre rouge’ costing €1.49 – compared to €1.43

today – and will require customers to send a document of up to three pages through a website before 20:00, to have it printed and distributed to its recipient the next day. The new price will include the paper and envelope. For customers who do not have access to digital [services], La Poste says it will offer the possibility to send a red e-letter from a post office, on a machine or with the help of a staff member. La Poste stated that offering the timbre rouge service generated a “very high energy cost” for the group, which was not sustainable when customer numbers were dropping. “There is less need for speed.” The number of letters being sent with a red stamp is 14 times lower today than it was in 2008,

making up 300,000 of the seven billion distributed each year. “Lettre rouge usage is beginning to disappear; households sent 45 priority postage letters each year in 2010, but only five in 2021,” La Poste added. La Poste has begun depending less on letters and more on parcels, which are becoming more and more lucrative. In 2020, letters only made up 17% of La Poste’s turnover, compared to 40% in 2010.

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for September 2022. This month’s column looks at Belgian airletters and aerogrammes. Airletters and Aerogrammes of Belgium Belgium issued its first airletters on 13 February 1948. They were denominated 3.15 fr and were intended for use only to European countries and to the Belgian Congo. The airletters had a stamp depicting ‘manufacturing’. Two airletters were issued, one inscribed Figure 1 3.15 fr Aerogramme used to France, Flemish/French Headings in Flemish and French in the north (Flanders), French by about 4 million ‘OMSLAG-BRIEF - ENpeople mainly in the south (Wallonia) and German VELOPPE LETTRE’ (Figures 1-2) and the other in the East by less than 100 000 people. Brussels is with the languages reversed and inscribed ‘ENVELbilingual with both French and Flemish commonly OPPE LETTRE - OMSLAG-BRIEF’. spoken. As a result, Belgian stationery, including Belgium is a multilingual country with Dutch airletters, appears with headings and instructions in (Flemish) spoken by almost 6 million people mainly one or some combination of these languages. On the 15 December 1948, the airletter rate was increased to 4 fr. The 3.15 fr airletters were used with additional adhesives until the 4 fr airletters were released. Figure 1 shows a 3.15 fr airletter used to France from Brussels at the 4 fr rate in February 1949 with the addition of 0.85 fr in additional adhesives. Figure 2 shows usage to the USA with the payment of 3.40 fr in additional adhesives in November 1949. Ian McMahon new headings to conform to the new UPU regulations requiring airletters to be inscribed Aerogramme to enable them to pass at reduced postal rates. ‘Aerogramme’ replaced ‘Enveloppe-Lettre’ and ‘Aerogram’ replaced ‘Omslag-Brief’. Again, the aerogrammes were issued in French/Flemish and Flemish/ French (Figure 6) forms on paper with vertical or horizontal widely spaced lines. The aerogramme in Figure 6 is used to Australia and is

In July 1954 the design of the reverse of the aerogrammes was changed so that the sender’s name and address lines were now arranged horizontally. These aerogrammes were issued in French/Flemish, Flemish/French and French/ Flemish/German (‘Aerogramm’) forms on paper with vertical or horizontal widely spaced lines.

November 1949. Once again French/Flemish (Figure 3) and Flemish/French (Figure 4) versions were issued. From 1 December 1949, these airletters could be used to non-European countries on payment of an additional 3fr. From this time until 1957, the issued airletters paid only the rate to Europe and the Belgian African territories. Figure 4 shows an airletter used to Australia in 1952 at the 7 fr non-European rate. In January 1952, an airletter (Figure 5) was issued which had in addition to the French/Flemish heading, the German heading ‘Umschlagebrief’. During 1952, the earlier unwatermarked paper was replaced by paper watermarked with horizontal or vertical lines about 25 mm apart. Airletters with Flemish/French and French/Flemish headings were issued on the new paper. In July 1953, aerogrammes were issued with Figure 4 4 fr Aerogramme used to Australia, Flemish/French Headings

Postal Stationery On 8 November 1958 a totally new design was introduced depicting a four engine jet (Figures 7-9). This stamp design was to continue until 1982 with many variations in denominations, paper, colour knives and headings. The first issue came in French/Flemish and Flemish/French versions and on blue paper with vertical or horizontal widely spaced lines (25 mm apart). In 1959 forms were issued on a turquoise coloured paFigure 5 4 fr aerogramme, French/Flemish/German Headings per with vertical or horizontal widely spaced vertical or horizontal widely spaced lines about 28 lines about 28 mm apart mm apart and in French/Flemish and Flemish/French and in a German/French/Flemish version. versions. In 1960 forms were issued on blue paper with In 1968, the headings of the aerogrammes were changed to san serifed characters. French only, French/Flemish, Flemish/French and German/French versions were issued. This became the standard ‘set’ of heading varieties for Belgian aerogrammes into the 1990s. Unlike other types of stationery, no Flemish only version could be issued due to the UPU’s requirement that the forms be inscribed ‘aerogramme’. Later in 1968 the Flemish heading for ‘aerogramme’ was Figure 6 4 fr Aerogramme with ‘Aerogram Aerogramme’ used to Australia, Hand changed to ‘Luchtpoststamped ‘Trouvé a la Boîte’ blad’. to 4.50 fr resulting in the issue of a 4.50 fr aerogramme. Figure 10 shows a 4 fr aerogramme used from a Belgian Antarctic Base in 1959. Additional adhesives have been added to pay the overseas aerogramme rate. On 1 June 1972, the three tier aerogramme rates were abolished with the aerogramme rate being set at 8 fr and made uniform to all countries. Between 1972 and 1976 the aerogramme rates rose steadily. As a result the denomination of the issued aerogrammes rose to 8 fr in 1973, 10 fr in 1974 and 14 fr in 1976 (Figure 11). In each case aerogrammes in the same design and with the same heading types were issued. At the time of the increase to 10 fr, the 8 fr aerogrammes were revalued by the addition of an impressed 2 fr Belgian lion

only aerogramme also appeared with the inscription ‘Ouvrir ici’ on the flap in smaller letters (14 mm long instead of 16.5 mm). These aerogrammes were produced using two different knives, one with the flaps with curved edges and the other with straight edges. From 1 October 1957 until 1972, the issued aerogrammes paid only the rate to the Belgian African Territories with adhesives needing to be added for use to all other countries. Different rates continued to apply for use to European and non-European destinations. For example, from 1 October 1957, the rate to European countries increased to 5 fr while the rate to other countries was 6.50 fr. These increased to 6 fr and 7.50 fr respectively in 1959 and 7 fr and 8.50 fr respectively in 1969. In 1969 the rate to the BelFigure 8 4 fr Jet design, French/Flemish gian Congo was increased

Postal Stationery stamp (Figure 12). The 4.50 fr and 10 fr aerogrammes were also issued revalued to new postal rates by the addition of a machine imprint. In 1982 17 fr commemorative aerogrammes were issued for the Philatelic Exhibition Belgica 82. These aerogrammes have a stamp depicting a medieval postman in lilac brown. With this rate rise, the opportunity was taken to change the stamp design to a plane and globe (Figure 13). This same design was used for the 22 fr aerogrammes issued in 1984 when the aerogramme rate was increased. In 1988 another design depicting a plane over a globe was introduced for 24 fr aerogrammes. This design was used again in 1990 for 25 fr aerogrammes and in 1994 for 32 fr aerogrammes. All of these aerogrammes were issued in French only, French/Flemish, Flemish/French and German/ French versions. Further information on Belgian aerogrammes can be found in Kessler’s Catolog of World Aerograms, Les Entiers Postale de Belgique, Michel Catalogue Postal Stationery of West Europe and Aerogramme von Europa (J and H Greiner). Stamp News - 39

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation This month we present the third and final instalment of the three-part article from Darryl Fuller on the myriad of sources from where to obtain material for your collection and an update of forthcoming exhibitions.

Where do I get Material for my Collection? “The fun is in the chase” Part 3 Stamp Clubs

There are enough benefits to belonging to a stamp club that would fill this entire article; however, it is best to focus on finding material in this article. Many clubs run circuit sheets where collectors mount material on sheets and price the items for sale. These sheets are either passed around at meetings or books of sheets are passed from member to member to peruse at home (usually with a 2—3 day time limit). They are both an excellent way to sell duplicates and can be a great source of often cheap single stamps. Some club members have ready sources of modern used Australian stamps which in this day and age can be hard to find. Many clubs also have auctions where you can sell and buy material, some at every meeting and others once or twice a year. Some Australian clubs have quite large semi-regular auctions where a wide range of material can be found. One aspect of club auctions that can be a great benefit is when a member’s collection is disposed of, often sadly after their death, by the family. While high end material is often sold through other means, collectors tend to have a lot of material not always of interest to dealers or auction houses. This material is sometimes given to a collector’s local club to sell. This can be a great source of material and often will contain bargains. It can also be an excellent source for good quality used albums and literature. I remember buying a box of 100 small Hagner type stock cards for $6 at a club auction.

Specialist Societies

If you have a specialised collecting area, then you cannot afford not to be a member of a specialist society or two. The knowledge in these societies, either through a printed journal, or knowledgeable 40 - Stamp News

Figure 11 collectors is invaluable. Almost all also run annual auctions with specialist material. Figure 11 illustrates an auction catalogue from the joint British West Indies Study Circle / British Caribbean Philatelic Study group auction from 2010, which was a special joint auction held in conjunction with the London 2010 International stamp exhibition. It had high quality material. Some specialist societies also have packets of material sent around for sale (like circuit books) but these are a lot less common and usually only useful in the country in which the society is based. Finally, of course, you will almost certainly find others in the society that collect what you do, and you end up swapping, trading or buying material that would be hard to find from other sources. I have found this especially true for Israel revenue material.

Russell Boylan

Philatelic Development Officer, APF There is some obvious etiquette with this process. It tends to only happen amongst collectors that know each other, and others’ interests, well. If someone buys a not expensive item for you it is polite to accept it and pay for it even if of only marginal interest. You never know when they might find something of great interest. If they give you the item then it is also polite to keep an eye out for items of interest to them so you can reciprocate, when possible.

Friends and Colleagues

Figure 12

Fellow Collectors

Not everyone out there is a competitor for the material you want. It pays to let others know what you collect in case they come across something of interest at a dealer, especially when overseas. With smart phones they can even take a picture and send it to you. You may ask them to buy it on the spot. Figure 12 illustrates an excellent example. It is a postcard proof of a KGVI Leeward Islands postcard, part of a collection of KGVI material being sold by a collector through an English dealer. I didn’t know the collector and hadn’t dealt with the dealer, but luckily Ed Druce and Bernie Beston saw the lot, knew I would be interested and let me know on their return to Australia. I purchased the lot and it filled a significant hole in my exhibit, which had very few if any KGVI proofs. I regular find that other collectors will buy items that they see at exhibitions and give them or sell them at cost to other collectors they know will be interested. And even if they don’t buy an item, they will often let you know that dealer X has an item of interest.

Many stamp collectors don’t like telling others they collect stamps – they feel it is seen as nerdy. I would emphasise not to broadcast that you have a very valuable collection because you never know who tells who about it and then someone breaks into your home. Rather, I find that because people know I am quite involved with philately that they give you stamps (rarely valuable unfortunately) or they ask your advice about their old collection or that of a relative who has died. It is important to give good advice because this way fewer stamps end up at the tip. I find people are happy to donate a small collection either to you or for sale at your local club or to give to junior collectors. Figure 13 is the cover of a stockbook of stamps from Bhutan that was given to my wife’s last boss at a conference he was at, in Bhutan. He had no interest in them, knew through my wife that I collected stamps and gave them to her to give to me. This happened because I let people know that I am a collector.

Charities/ Businesses / Scrounging

If you are after modern material, particularly used then it is worth checking out charities and businessStamp News - 41

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation es. Modern kiloware sells for high prices these days but it is always worth trying to cut out the middleman. It doesn’t hurt to ask local church groups or other charities whether they still collect stamps from various sources and sell them. If so, they may be happy to sell them to you at a fair price which may be higher than whatever price they receive at present. Some may even have access to international mail, and this would be a valuable source of modern stamps used. I remember buying small packets of charity mix from a Coles store in Perth in the early 1970s. Even if the charity doesn’t currently collect stamps and resell, you may be able to persuade them to do it as it is an easy source of funds. Businesses are a slightly different approach. You need to find one that receives a reasonable volume of mail, perhaps even larger mail items than the standard envelope. You may be able to simply ask the receptionist or whoever opens the mail to simply keep a box and put all the opened envelopes in it. You can then pick them up once a fortnight or month depending on volume. You may need to sweeten the deal with chocolates or a bottle of wine, but a steady source of such material can be invaluable. Finding Australian sheet stamps correctly used as opposed to peel and stick can be a real challenge but they do turn up on such mail. You might also find some useful postal stationery such as in Figure 14. This is one of the Australia Post Torres Strait Islander PSEs which has an additional corner print for one of the Aboriginal Corporations in the Northern Territory. A

Figure 13 nice item but a shame it wasn’t postmarked in Tennant Creek when posted. By scrounging I mean it never hurts to check out skip bins when someone is emptying a house. Also, check the bins that are usually provided at post offices that have a lot of Post Office boxes as some people throw out envelopes with stamps on them.

Exhibition Catalogues

Figure 14 42 - Stamp News

International exhibition catalogues are always worth a look as they usually list the dealers attending. Sometimes this may be the only time you see the dealer listed. It never hurts to contact them just in case. Such exhibition catalogues also list

Russell Boylan

Philatelic Development Officer, APF Private Treaty Lists

Dealers and auction houses put out private treaty lists, often in association with an exhibition but at other times as a regular feature. They are not always as well advertised as they could be, and it pays to search them out. Yes, they often have high end material that is expensive, but they often have partially formed collections. This happens because a collector will want to sell what he has as one lot, rather than have the best pieces sold at auction and be left with the rest. If you are after a new collecting area, this can be an ideal way to start. You save time because the previous collector has put in the effort, and you generally get their knowledge, as such material is often written up. The dealer selling it just takes a commission so doesn’t have any outlay. It is often a win all round.

Exchange Partners

I don’t know if exchanging current stamps with other collectors overseas is as common as it once was, but it is worth thinking about. This is an excellent way to get new issues, and modern used material. However, it pays to establish strong ground rules and a level of trust before any in-depth exchange.

Advertise Figure 15 literature entries, and this may be the only time you see a book listed. The hunt will then be on to find who is actually selling the book. Sometimes easy, sometimes harder than it should be. Remember some books are printed in small quantities (100 or less) and some are only printed on demand.

Stamp Shows, Fairs and Exhibitions

These are all obvious sources of material and I don’t need to say much. I always say attend an international exhibition if you can, but smaller exhibitions and fairs are also important. Some small part-time dealers don’t advertise and only attend smaller fairs where table prices are low. You never know what they may have and if they have low overheads you may get some bargains.

If you can’t find what you want then advertise, either in a general stamp magazine or in a specialist society journal. Regular insertions of an advertisement are generally cheaper. The American Philatelist, the magazine for the American Philatelic Society, allows one-line and two-line advertisements that are not bad value when you put them in for a year.

Non-Philatelic Sources

Other societies, such as genealogical or historical societies have great interest in old letters and correspondence. By talking to them, or even joining them you may find new sources of material. In addition, your knowledge of postal history may also be of benefit to them. Such two-way exchanges will lead to some mutual benefit. Secondhand dealers are also a possible source, not always for stamps but it is always worth looking at their postcards. Postcard collectors look at the front and stamp collectors look at the back. Stamp News - 43

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation One of the themes was the Australian Academy of Science (AAS) building (known as the Shine dome). I found an old Australia Post postcard from the early 1980s sets of 18 cent cards that I happened to have. I then put the then current 50c stamp of the same building on it and had it cancelled at the exhibition with the AAS cancel that we had. This card, as far as I am aware meets the concordance rules for a maximum card. Figure 16

Create Your Own

Sometimes the only way to get something is to create your own. After all, ‘philatelic’ usage in the correct time period is better than no usage at all. Some Australian stamps, that are just regular issues, will be almost impossible to find correctly used, despite being a base rate stamp. One that comes to mind is the 100th Anniversary of the Australian Taxation Office, issued in 2010. It was only issued as a gummed sheet stamp in sheetlets of 10 (Figure 15). It would have seen virtually no usage in post offices, so try and find a used copy on cover! I went to the launch of this stamp in Canberra and never thought to create a cover, despite realising their scarcity. If you collect maximum cards, then you often need to make your own. Figure 16 illustrates one that I made in 2008 at Canberra Stampshow. 44 - Stamp News

Publish

I can’t emphasise this one enough. If you publish articles on what you have or new knowledge you have gained, then it is likely other collectors and even dealers will seek you out. Once a correspondence starts then trading often follows and friendships develop. The world stamp exhibition in Washington DC in 2006 was

Figure 17

Russell Boylan

Philatelic Development Officer, APF my first international in another country. It was also an opportunity for me to meet collectors I had been corresponding with for years. It was a great exhibition because of this. I would also argue that it was the peak of world exhibitions this century, for many reasons. I have been to many enjoyable international exhibitions since then, but none had the feel of that exhibition. It had everything – great exhibits, hundreds of dealers, dozens of societies with manned tables and hundreds of meetings. It also had great attendance. Nothing has come close since, not because of poor organisation but simply because collectors are getting older, and it is harder to get the support and volunteers of their time.

The Hunt

The sub-title of this article is ‘The fun is in the chase’ and that is what I have always found. I recently purchased a stamp on eBay that I had been looking for, for 22 years. It felt great to win it at auction and it fills an important gap in a set of stamps I have studied and chased for years. I hope you have found some ideas to use in your own collecting pursuits. I have been a collector for 58 years and considered myself a philatelist for 50 of those years. You learn a lot and especially from the mistakes you make and those around you. Hopefully this article may help you make less mistakes. When hunting for material it is important to realise that the internet (and eBay) are not all that is out there. They have been a boon, particularly if you collect unusual areas, but you always need to keep up the hunt. It is important not to do something once and think that that is the end of it. At regular intervals I repeat what I have done in the past to see if anything new pops up, and it usually does. It doesn’t hurt to look at left field areas also. Back before the internet I wrote to many dealers asking for Leeward Islands stationery. This included an Italian dealer – not that I expected anything. However, he did have a KEVII postcard unused, quite common for 3 euros. It also had the original wrapper band on at no extra cost (Figure 17). This now sits proudly in my exhibit. It would have never happened if I hadn’t been on the hunt – so start hunting and I hope you find something unusual.

reviews AUSTRALASIAN CRASH MAIL AND MAIL FROM OTHER INCIDENTS, VOLUME FOUR, 1940 - 1949 by Brian R. Peace This is the 4th book in the series on Australasian crash mail. This book covers all crashes and incidents where mail was involved; but it is much more than that. The author has been thorough in setting a context; not simply explaining the distinction between an accident and an incident. The book is effectively a comprehensive demonstration of the challenges and hazards facing air forces, pilots and the growing airline industry, from a social and historical, as well as a philatelic, perspective. The tables at the end of each of the first four chapters are useful in that it is a relatively simple task to check air mail covers to establish if they could have been involved in an accident or incident. The inclusion in tables of the amount of mail carried, and the recorded or estimated numbers of surviving covers, will be invaluable for auction houses and dealers as well as collectors. Whilst some would prefer to see values, auction realisations or scarcity ratings included, the author has deliberately avoided their inclusion. A detailed census has been prepared for all accidents where more than 5 examples are recorded. It must be stressed that each of these is a preliminary census and must be treated as a work in progress. Where 5 or fewer examples are recorded, they are described and illustrated in the text. The author estimates that at least 20% more covers have survived than are listed in censuses. For example, in the case of 400122, over 50 covers are recorded in the census, yet it is likely that more than 60 probably exist. One of the main reasons for this disparity is that, until fairly recently, images of covers from crashes were not always included in auction catalogues. Chapter Two on New Zealand internal airmails is larger than in previous volumes. Chapter Three includes much of the Pacific theatre during World War II. Research into wartime incidents has been challenging and the attribution of damaged covers to incidents, and the allocation of specific aircraft to incidents where mail was lost or damaged has not always been possible. The extensive list of references points to this study 46 - Stamp News

ken sanford being not only thorough, but wide-ranging. There are several serious incidents involving mail-carrying aircraft in Australia and the Pacific which have remained unrecorded in philatelic literature. The possibility of new crash covers emerging is an incentive for aerophilatelists, and dealers, to re-examine their air mail covers from this period. At 200+ pages the book is the culmination of decades of research and writings. All of the cover images are in color. The author first wrote on the subject 50 years ago, and is the acknowledged authority on the subject. It may be that the readership will turn out to be wider than auctioneers, aerophilatelists and dealers. Postpaid price is £35 in the UK, EUR45 to Europe, US$70 to the USA and AU$100 to Australia. Hello and welcome to Part IX of my tour of British Commonwealth stamps. I hope you enjoy looking at this month’s stamps, along with some interesting philatelic details and trivia. I looked at Labuan last month and now I am moving on to the stamps from the Malaysian States. I will do this in alphabetical order so we will start with Johore and then show a few from Kedah. I will also try and avoid earlier issues with various overprints, including Omnibus issues like the 1949 UPU issue and the 1953 Coronation issue, because they are perhaps too

Figure 1 48 - Stamp News

complicated. For reasons of space and to avoid too much repetition I may decide to miss a few States. Let’s see how I go. I hope you enjoy this part of the journey. The first stamp is from Johore (Fig 1). Johore joined the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and the first Johore stamps were issued in 1891. This and other early issues show just the image of the Sultans, Abu Bakar and then Sir Ibrahim. It was not until 1960 that we started to see pictorial definitives. The first were based on the 1957 designs of Kedah but with the portrait of Sultan Ismail (Fig 1) Not an expensive set of 11, but it is not easy to get a nice copy of each issue. The 10c stamp below is one of the very common ones and rather attractive, I think. One more from Johore (Fig 2) - one of the 1965 Flora Orchids issue. Apart from being a nice stamp it is one to look carefully at. A copy with the green omitted is worth “a nice shiraz” and there is also a watermark sideways copy from a 1979 issue. As I frequently say, do pay attention to the watermark and always have a good catalogue to help you. Now a few stamps from Kedah which has an interesting history since it was very much influenced by the Thai monarchy in the early years with Thai stamps used in the late 1800s. I will start with these three from the 1912 issue. There are just three designs in the set of 14 stamps. The 1c to 8c values show a sheaf of rice (Fig 3)

Figure 2

by Michael Dodd

Figure 3 & 4 The Malay ploughing design (Fig 4) is used on the 10c to the 50c values and the Alor Star Council Chamber design (Fig 5) is used on the higher values to $5. Do keep a sharp eye open on the 10c value as there is a nice variety termed the “feather in the hat” variety; basically a small flaw found on Plate 1 Row 9/5 which shows like a feather in the right side of the hat on the farmers head. Sadly I do not have a copy to show. This is a rather beautiful issue in my mind, with a few stamps with watermark varieties worth looking out for. Just two more from Kedah which are from the 1957 pictorial definitive issue. The first from a very nice set of 11 stamps each with a design depicting local scenes, events and crafts for example. I particularly like this issue, and this stamp. Why? Because I

have actually had the experience of blowing a blowpipe – aiming at a dartboard in the jungle I might add - and it is not as easy as one might think. The stamps shows the portrait of Sultan Badlishah and as you can see in the next stamp (Fig 7) the same design is used for the 1959 issue but with the portrait of Sultan Abdul Halim Shah. Also to note on this 1959 issue is that there are two perforation varieties: the original 1959 issue was perforation 12½ and there was a 1960 reprint with perforation 12½ x 13. It’s nice to have both in your collection I think, and they are not

at all costly to acquire. In my next piece I will look at some of the issues from Kelantan, again a State with a strong Thai influence. Until then, enjoy your stamps, for the history they show and the stories they can tell, and also for the differences which are not always so obviously seen but which can be extremely important. AÉROPOSTALE & the literary connection Philatelic writers have a tendency of frequently returning to exactly the same stamps and in this respect I am no different. There are some issues which I find particularly interesting and which can be discussed from different angles. One such stamp was released by French West Africa in 1947 (Fig. 1). It commemorates the French pilot, philosopher and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (19001944). In addition to the portrait of Saint-Exupéry, the design also features a map of the north-western part of Africa with the territory of Spanish Sahara highlighted. Those who study the design carefully will also discover a book title. Courrier Sud (Southern Mail in English) was one of his more famous short novels. During the past summer I reread this book which was published way back in 1928 according to the stamp; most sources say it appeared in 1929. It is basically the story about a pilot called Jaccques Bernis who works for a company which carries the mail from the South of France to Dakar in West Africa. This was a subject

Figure 1

50 - Stamp News

which Saint-Exupéry was quite familiar with as he had worked for the Aéropostale company both as a pilot and as manager of the company’s station at Cabo Juby (Fig. 2) in the south of Morocco. At the time Cabo Juby was administered by Spain. In 1918 Pierre-Georges Latécoère founded an airline based in the city of Toulouse in the south of France. The idea was to carry mail and passengers by plane from France to West Africa. The company was known as the Société des Lignes Latécoère but after about a year the name was changed to Compagnie Générale Aéropostale (mostly just referred to as Aéropostale). The first plane took off from Toulouse on 25 December 1918 heading for Barcelona in Spain. In February 1919 the planes flew all the way to Casablanca in Morocco. Starting in 1925, Aéropostale carried the mail all the way from Toulouse to Dakar in Senegal. The company also offered fast communications with South America. At first the mail sacks were carried by ships sailing from Dakar to Brazil where waiting airplanes carried the mail sacks to Buenos Aires

Figure 2

Christer Brunström and Santiago de Chile. Beginning in 1930, there were direct flights across the Atlantic from Dakar to South America. In 1980 Brazil issued a commemorative stamp (Fig. 3) marking the 50th anniversary of these pioneering mail flights. The stamp shows one of Aéropostale’s planes along with a French flag. After a number of problems, Aéropostale ceased in 1933 and the flights were taken over by the newly formed Air France. During its existence, the company had employed some of France’s most well-known pilots including Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Jean Mermoz. Shown nearby is a poster stamp (Fig. 4) issued in Argentina to collect funds to erect a memorial in honour of Mermoz. This Argentinian poster stamp clearly demonstrates that pilots had a very difficult and physically demanding job. It was hard work keeping the plane on track in adverse weather conditions. The pilots needed to navigate using geographical features on the ground. For this reason they first flew from Toulouse to Barcelona and then

followed the Mediterranean coastline passing Alicante, Murcia and Malaga before reaching Gibraltar where they crossed the sound arriving in Tangiers. They then flew along the Moroccan coastline towards Spanish Sahara and Mauritania before reaching Senegal and Dakar. One of the more dreaded passages was the Saharan desert (Fig. 5). At the time, the Spanish authorities basically only had control of the towns along the coastline. Along the route there were airfields at regular distances. Sometimes the pilots had to make emergency landings if the weather was stormy or visibility was poor. The different airfields communicated with each other using radio telegraphy. When a plane had left, a message was immediately sent to the next station which then confirmed the arrival of the plane. A French West African stamp (Fig. 6) depicts the radio station in Dakar which was of paramount importance for Aéropostale’s communications. But it was not only the weather which could cause problems for the pilots. In case of emergency landings in

Figure 3

Figure 5

Figure 4

Stamp News - 51

AÉROPOSTALE & the literary connection the Saharan desert, the pilots might encounter hostility from the local tribes (Fig. 7). The Spanish authorities only controlled the towns along the coastline. Courrier Sud is certainly not a treatise of postal history but very much a novel. Before leaving Toulouse, Jacques Bernis had tried to renew his relations with the woman he loves but nothing worked out the way he hoped. The memories of his recent meetings with Geneviève are very much on his mind during the flight which initially proceeds without any major problems. Engine problems develop over the desert resulting in a crash landing. A radio message announcing his departure had been sent by radio from Cabo Juby indicating that Bernis is on his way to Saint Louis du Sénégal via Port-Étienne in the north-western corner of Mauritania but there is no confirmation of his arrival. Airplanes are dispatched to try to find out what has happened. After a day or two, Port-Étienne sends a radio

message to Toulouse telling them that the plane has crashed and that the pilot is dead. However, the mail has been forwarded to Dakar. The novel ends with a oneline radio message to Toulouse: All the mail sacks have arrived safely. Aéropostale printed a propaganda stamp (Fig. 8) showing the map of the route from France to South America. If we are to believe the writing, letters could be mailed without the additional airmail fee if the propaganda stamp was affixed to the letter (in addition to the required postage fee). Saint-Exupéry wrote several novels based on his experiences as a pilot. But for the general public he is probably mostly known for Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince). This book was published in 1943 and has often been considered a story for children but it is rather a serious existentialist discussion of the meaning of life. Perhaps this is what kept him awake during the long flights from Toulouse to Dakar or South America?
