x. Facilitators in Commercial Philately Reaching an international clientele was a major challenge for those Philatelic Traders without a House Organ. Leading Traders with their own publication were generally not accepting of external advertising. In the 1880s, overseas journals, such as New York’s The Empire State Philatelist, provided a potential medium for exposure to the American market . By the 1890s, greater sophistication available to Colonial Philatelic Traders offered the more enterprising the opportunity to place advertising with professional specialists

reviews SG Australia with Australian States & Dependencies 2022 catalogue Paperback, 426 pages, 12th edition It’s always at least a little bit exciting when a new SG Australia catalogue arrives, and we’ve been waiting for the 12th edition a little longer than usual. Over recent years, the Australia catalogue has been one of the most regularly published volumes by SG with the previous three editions appearing at approximately 18 month intervals. This time, at least partially due to the pandemic, it’s been well over 4 years. It’s worth noting that the 11th edition did appear with two different covers, with the now standard blue cover replacing the older cover a couple of years ago. The contents however were unchanged. Another thing to note is that due to the four year gap between editions, at least four editions of SG’s Commonwealth & British Empire stamps (the ‘Part 1’) catalogue have been published as the annual production of this SG ‘Flagship’ volume was not interrupted by Covid and appeared towards the end of each year as usual. This is important as SG’s Australia catalogue listings, notes and any price changes etc up to 1970 are taken directly from the most recent edition of the ‘Part 1’ which in the case of the new Australia catalogue is the 2023 edition. Because of this the editor tells us ‘there are more changes than usual in this edition’ So what is new for the 2022 edition? Well new issues are covered right up to the Centenary of the Men’s National Football team issue on the 19th of July, AAT to the March 2022 Penguins set, Christmas Is. To the Jan 2022 Year of the Tiger, Cocos (Keeling) Is to the May 2022 Historical Jukongs set & Norfolk Is to the June 2022 Morepork issue. The order of listing in the Postage Due section has been revised a little to bring it line with the NSW listings, although I don’t believe this has 8 - Stamp News

resulted in any changed numbers. The back cover advises ‘Prices have been extensively revised with many substantial increases to the States issues as well as to some more modern errors. There are dozens of newly listed errors and varieties, numerous additional notes to aid identification and new illustrations of previously listed varieties’ The Telegraph stamps of the States are now also included. As has become the ‘norm’ with these catalogues, this one also includes an interesting, in depth article about the Surface-printed Queensland 1d 1878-1912 by Andrew Mortlock. Taking all of the above into account, the publication of the 12th edition presents an excellent opportunity to grab this ‘must have’ catalogue. Grab one asap as I suspect they’ll sell out very quickly, and there may well be a price increase before new stock arrives. SG Portugal and Colonies 2022 catalogue Paperback, 277 pages, 1st edition RRP A $84.95 This is the first edition of the Portugal catalogue after the split with the Spain catalogue, the first edition of which was published back in mid 2019. Portugal was expected to follow soon after but once again, thanks to Covid, this volume was delayed until now. New issues covered here include Portugal up to October 2021, and Azores & Madeira up until mid 2021. But this catalogue is much more than just that, it includes extensive listings including Angola (up to independence), Portuguese Congo, Azores (including Angra, Horta, Ponta Delgada), British PO on San Miguel, Cape Verde Islands & Macao (both up to independence), British PO’s in Macao & Madeira, Mozambique (including

Inhambane, onga, Lourenco Marques, Mozambique Company, Nyassa Company, Quelimane, Tete, Zambezia), Portuguese Colonies and Overseas Territories, Portuguese Guinea, Portuguese India, St Thomas and Prince Islands (up to independence), Timor & East Timor. So plenty to keep even the most enthusiastic collector busy! There are many new illustrations in colour, mainly in the early colonial issues, notes and illustrations on the Ceres ‘Stars’ issues have now been included, and the Portuguese booklet listing has been checked & revised. Machine labels are now listed & illustrated up to 2017, but remain unpriced. And talking of pricing, as it has now been more than 10 years since the previous edition, as you would expect, there has been some variations in values, both up & down. For the early issues up to around 1910 prices are generally up for Mint but pretty much unchanged for used. However, for later issues up to the post WW2 period the reverse seems to be the case with some Mint set prices dropping but used prices edging up. An interesting 4 page article entitled ‘Portuguese Indian ‘Natives’: The first issues’ by Luis & Eduardo Barreiros rounds out this excellent catalogue, which is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in this area The Postage Stamps of Aden 1937-1968 Paperback, 115 pages, 2nd edition published 2022 by Peter James Bond, Published by the author RRP A $29.90 Although this is the second edition, I have to admit that this catalogue/handbook is completely new to me, and despite Aden not being an area that holds any particular philatelic interest for me, I have to say that I’m impressed! Before you get to the actual stamp listings, there is quite a bit of interesting reading under the headings of: Collecting Aden, A Brief History of Aden, and An introduction to the Postal History of Aden, with the latter including several postmark illustrations etc. There is also an introduction covering changes from the first edition, the scope of the catalogue & the values quoted and a Bibliography can be found on the last page of the catalogue. The listings themselves are quite extensive and cover: Colony of Aden, State of Aden, Federation of

mike lee

South Arabia, Kathiri State of Seiyun, Kathiri State of Hadhramaut, Mahra State of Qishn & Socotra, Qu’aiti State of Shihr & Mukalla, Qu’aiti State of Hadhramaut & State of Upper Yafa. Several of the stamps, mini sheets etc listed here aren’t included in the mainstream catalogues such as Stanley Gibbons or Scott, or at best have been relegated to the Appendix section of the catalogues. All stamps are illustrated in full colour, and while the illustrations aren’t the highest quality I’ve ever seen, they are certainly clear and it seems to me that the colours are quite accurate. Values are for MUH and Used/CTO, and are given in £’s Sterling & US $’s, resulting in four pricing columns. The information is clear and should not cause any confusion, just be aware of the arrangement as four columns of prices is a little unusual. In regards to the prices given, the author states in the introduction ‘The values quoted here are mostly typical selling prices., which you would expect o pay a seller, usually online. Some scarcer items are either not afforded a value or one that has been inferred by similar material. As always, condition is a great leveller and particularly with the 1937 Dhow issue.’ This is the type of publication that could tempt me to start collecting a new area, so if you are easily seduced by fresh philatelic fields, then be warned! It is an excellent addition to any collectors library, but if anything relating to Aden is of interest to you already then it’s a must have. And it seems a steal at around A$30! The catalogue can be ordered through a number of online book sellers including: amazon.com, angusrobertson.com.au, barnesandnoble.com, bookdepository. com & booktopia.com.au See you soon with more catalogue & handbook reviews, and have a wonderful 2023! What’s old becomes new again on a stamp issued in October by Austrian Post. In the spirit of sustainability, the postal agency has recycled old postal uniform shirts to make the paper used to print the stamps. Austrian Post said this rag paper was made according to a centuries-old tradition at the last paper mill of its kind in the country. the old uniform shirts were shredded, mixed with water and ground into pulp. Then the pulp was scooped with sieves and laid on felt, resulting in rag paper once the water was pressed out. The rag paper retains some of the blue fibres from the shirts on the new stamp. The design shows a blue outline of a shirt with laundry symbols that commonly appear on clothing tags imposed over it. The “Ein Postlerhemd” inscription on the stamp translates to “a postal shirt.” Text below the laundry symbols instructs readers not to wash, iron or bleach the stamp. This new issue continues Austrian Post’s recent trend of printing certain stamps on fabric. The postal agency issued a Wool Mitten stamp printed on a blend of cotton and polyester in 2021, followed by a Wool Hat stamp made from flocked paper in early 2022. In September 2021, Austrian Post issued an embroidered stamp made to look like a protective face

mask widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other embroidered stamps include a Styrian Hat stamp issued in 2018 and a Gentian Flower stamp in 2008.

North Korea has reportedly issued a new stamp featuring the construction and completion of a greenhouse farm in Hamju, South Hamgyong Province. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has attended the opening ceremony of a new massive greenhouse farm built on a former air base where the country had test-fired missiles until last year. The launch of the Ryonpho Greenhouse Farm was to mark the anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party, a major holiday in North Korea. The party have touted the project as a “highly automated farm” and a model for rural civilisation, calling it a “top priority task” to help achieve its goal of improving people’s lives. The same day North Korea unveiled designs for a new stamp commemorating last month’s launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) that flew over Japan for the first time in five years.

Wanted dead or alive in Canada Reported at https://lfpress.com

The case against a fraudster known as Stamp Guy took a bizarre twist recently after the Crown prosecuting the case said there’s a chance they may not be able to get conclusive evidence the convicted man is dead. Allan Fischer, 59, was supposed to be sentenced last week after he was found guilty in June of defrauding Canada Post of $235,000 between 2013 and 2016 through an elaborate stamps-on-credit scheme. But the sentencing hearing had to be postponed after the court was told Fischer had died after receiving a medically assisted death.

Though the postponement was intended to give the Crown time to confirm Fischer’s death but apparently no conclusive evidence had been found. Among those indicating they were involved in Fischer’s MAiD procedure are a clergyperson and a physician, who Campbell said identified Fischer by looking at a driver’s licence. But the ultimate proof that could have helped solve the mystery, Fischer’s fingerprints, was never collected by the coroner’s office. Fischer was facing a potential prison sentence for the scheme that took advantage of a loophole in Canada Post’s direct mail contracts where it allowed business clients to acquire $7,500 in stamps and products without a credit check. Fischer set up 48 fictitious business accounts with fake emails, phone numbers and addresses all over Canada. He re-sold the stamps online at a 30 per cent discount. Fischer never paid Canada Post for the stamps. He ran the scheme so often, post office investigators referred to him as “the Stamp Guy.” The presiding judge has indicated that he will probably proceed to sentencing Fischer in his absence.

Cultural heritage protected in India Reported at www.thehindu.com

Philatelic exhibits such as stamps, stamp papers and envelopes of more than a century old are antiquities, the Delhi High Court said in a judgment delivered recently. The court’s observation came while rejecting a petition by a philatelist Ajay Kumar Mital who argued that philatelic material around 100 years and older is not an antiquity under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act (AATA), 1972.

Mr. Mital, in his petition, had sought to ease the procedure involved in the export of philatelic exhibits outside the country. He submitted that if carriage of philatelic exhibits abroad is to be subjected to the rigour of a 1999 Department of Culture’s guidelines, participation in exhibitions abroad would become almost impossible. “The very fact that international exhibitions are held for such specialists, indicates clearly that philatelic exhibits are of great value. A postage stamp from 1900 may have increased its value a thousand-fold a hundred years later,” Justice C. Hari Shankar said. The court also rejected Mr. Mital’s petition to simplify the procedure to get a No Objection Certificate and Temporary Export Permit for exporting philatelic exhibits by resorting to a “one window procedure”. Postal war effort remembered in the US Reported at www.warhistoryonline.com

The US Senate recently passed a bill to officially recognize the efforts of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The unit, solely staffed by African-American women, solved the mail crisis in World War II, but received little recognition for their efforts – that is, until the bill passed a House vote and was signed by US President Joe Biden. Toward the final years of World War II, there was an increasing backlog of mail in Europe. As many postal clerks had volunteered to join the war effort, there were millions of parcels and letters that hadn’t been delivered to their proper recipients on the front. The solution was the African-American members of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Black women had recently been allowed to join the WAC due to the advocacy of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Eight hundred and fifty-five women formed the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, affectionately known as the “Six Triple Eight - the only Black battalion of women to serve in Europe during 16 - Stamp News

the conflict. The 6888th Central Postal Battalion boarded the Île de France in February 1945 and began their journey to the United Kingdom. Along the way, the vessel dodged German U-boats, and members had to run for cover after the ship was targeted by a German V-1 rocket while docked in Glasgow. After boarding a train, the women arrived in Birmingham. Their work area was less than ideal - rat-infested, unheated airplane hangars. Their lodgings weren’t much better, as mess halls, housing and recreational facilities were segregated by race and gender. The unit had to sort and send mail that was sometimes over two years old. They worked in three shifts, seven days a week, sorting through 65,000 pieces of mail during each shift. To accomplish this, they created a system using locator cards with service members’ names and unit numbers. They sometimes had to resort to other methods when a parcel or letter had a common name or a soldier’s nickname. In total, the 6888th sorted through 17 million pieces of mail. It had been estimated it would take six months to complete their task, but they managed to do so in just three. To motivate themselves, they

They were sent to Rouen and tasked with sorting mail that was up to three years old. They began in May 1945, and by October had fully sorted the parcels and letters. They were then sent to Paris. As the war had ended, the battalion was reduced by 300 members. Another 200 women were discharged a few months later, in January 1946. The unit received scant acknowledgement of their work, as was similar to the treatment of other African-American units, who were never afforded the same attention as White servicemen. Time and tide wait for none; however, time stood still when Oscar Woody, a postal clerk aboard the RMS Titanic, perished along with 1,520 others on the ill-fated ship Titanic in 1912. One hundred ten years later, the gilded pocket watch found on the crew member’s body has sold for $116,000. Woody travelled to Europe aboard Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, arriving in Plymouth and was instructed to join Titanic on her maiden voyage. He joined Titanic on 10 April 1912 as part of the postal group and whilst aboard was due to celebrate his 41st birthday on 15 April. The last time the timepiece ticked was on the fateful morning of April 15, 1912, when the Titanic struck an iceberg during its maiden voyage from the UK to New York City. According to BBC, the vintage timepiece was recovered from the ocean and returned to his wife, Leila, the following month. On the night of the sinking, Woody and his fellow postal clerks, assisted by several other crewmen, struggled to bring some 200 sacks of mail up to a higher deck from the flooding mail rooms. It’s really exciting to be giving a glimpse into Santa’s workshop for the first time!” said Mary Grace Simpson, Head of Philately. A second set of Christmas stamps have also been issued with a more traditional design, including the nativity scene. While on the topic of Christmas stamps, Stampboards has held its annual readers poll of Christmas stamps for 2022. Here is a taste of this year’s contenders pictured on the next page. What were they thinking? 2008 Papua New Guinea Harpy Eagle

Margo Campbell

There was a serious case of mistaken identity in 2008 when Papua Philatelic Bureau released a stamp set on endangered birds of New Guinea featuring a South American ring-in. Field biologist, Leo Legra, says Post PNG is using a South American Harpy Eagle on its 85t stamp rather than the endangered New Guinea Harpy Eagle. Dr Legra said “The stamps were released to mark protected birds in Papua New Guinea, which I think is a really good tool for creating awareness and helping species protection.”

“However, as a field biologist who has worked extensively on the New Guinea Harpy Eagle, I was shocked to see the 85 toea stamps having the images of the Harpy Eagle (Harpypia harpyja) of South America but labelled as New Guinea Harpy Eagle (Harpyopsis novaeguineae).” “It is sad to see that the Government is advocating the protection of birds in Papua New but don’t even know what the bird looks like.”

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for January 2023. This month’s column looks at the introduction of lettersheets by Australia in 1961, a survey of the types of the non-denominated small international registered envelopes and Australia Post new issues. Introduction of Postal Stationery Lettersheets 1961 The Canberra Times reported on 9 November 1960 on a press release from the Postmaster General on the forthcoming issue of postal stationery lettersheets (Figure 1) by the Post Office. The Report read: A new item of stamped postal stationery, a “letter sheet,” will be issued at all post offices on January 18, 1961, the Postmaster-General, Mr. Davidson, said Below :Figure 1 1961 5d Lettersheet Figure 2 1967 5c Lettersheet Right : Figure 3 5d Lettersheet Used by the Postmaster General’s Department Figure 4 1996 Issue of DL International Registered Envelope Figure 5 Reverse of 1996 Issue of DL International Registered Envelope Showing One-line Australia Post Logo

yesterday. The lettersheet would be the same size and format as the current aerogramme and would bear the imprint of a 5d stamp. Writing area would be three times greater than that of the present lettercard and would be sold for 6d.

Mr. Davidson said the lettersheet would be transmitted by airmail within Australia without additional payment. If the weight limitation of one ounce was exceeded by the insertion of additional sheets, additional postage would have to be added. Additional postage also would be needed when a lettersheet was

posted as surface mail to overseas countries to which the charge of 5d for one ounce did not apply. The lettersheet could not be used as a substitute for an aerogramme. Mr. Davidson said after the lettersheet had been in use long enough to become known. to the public, it should be practicable to discard the lettercard as a postal stationery item. Interestingly, Mr Davidson’s forecast that the lettersheets would replace the lettercard turned out to be unfounded. Only three lettersheets were issued in denominations of 5d, 4c and 5c (Figure 2). While over 2.2 million of the 5d lettersheets were distributed and over 500,000 of the 4c lettersheets, there were only 46,100 of the 5c lettersheet distributed. Lettersheets were withdrawn from sale late in 1968 due to declining demand. Many of the 5d lettersheets were used by the Post Office itself to advise senders of mail with insufficient postage (Figure 3). The lettercards, however, continued to be issued until 1985 with, for example, over 4.8 million of the 5c lettercard being distributed. Stamp News - 21

Postal Stationery Small International Non-Denominated Registered Envelopes In the August 2021 issue of the Postal Stationery Collector, I provided a brief survey of the small domestic registered envelopes. Besides the domestic registered envelopes issued on 1 October 1996, two international registered envelopes were issued in two sizes 130 x 240 mm (sold for $8) and 240 x 353 mm ($14). This survey looks at the major different design types of the small international envelopes. Itis unlikely to be complete as the number of envelopes available to me has been quite small as most used envelopes, as would be expected are sent overseas. The first issue which was issued on 1 October 1996 is illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. The envelope has a postage paid Australia indicium and prepaid registered postage worldwide for letters and documents only up to 500g. The envelopes had a self-adhesive label with a barcode and were numbered RR and 7 numbers. The lowest number in my sample was RR0003303. The envelopes included a detachable receipt which was intended to be postmarked by the post office at which the envelopes were posted. In 1997, the envelopes were issued with barcode numbers comprised of RR, nine numbers and AU to confirm with international standards (Figure 6). The lowest number recorded in the sample was RR005027019AU. In late 1997, envelopes were issued with a new Australia Post logo on the reverse with ‘Australia Post’ in two lines as shown in Figures 7 and 8. The gum on the reverse is in one straight line. The lowest number recorded is RR112503042AU. By 2005, envelopes were issued with the gum placed in ‘spots’ rather than as a single strip. This gum shows clearly through the flap (Figure 22 - Stamp News

Ian McMahon 9). The lowest number recorded was RR308321993AU. Figure 10 shows an envelope with 2-line logo, spotted gum, no self-adhesive logo and text printed on envelope ‘For letters and documents only Max weight 500g’ in two lines. In 2006, the design was modified so that the text ‘Max – Weight 500g Thickness 5 mm’ is printed on the bottom lefthand corner and the text on the self-adhesive label now reads ‘For letters and documents only’. Envelope still has spotted gum and two-line Australian Post logo on reverse. Number recorded was RR318527572AU. Figure 11 shows an example used to the USA and a mint example without the self-adhesive label (Figure 12). By 2010, the design was changed to have a boxed Australia Post logo on the reverse and a two-line Australia Post logo on the front (Figures 13 and 14). Lowest barcode number recorded was RR329730790AU. Occurs with both spotted gum and straight gum (recorded from 2015). In about 2017, a new design (Figure 15) was issued with a new Australia Post logo on the front (only), the barcode placed on the right and details of the service restrictions in the indicium area in the upper right.

Canada Post Community Foundation Postal Card Canada issued a community postal card (Figure 16). The card was available for free at post offices if a donation was made to the Canada Post Community Foundation by purchasing charity stamps for the Foundation. The indicium on the card depicts treehouses and is similar to the design of the charity adhesive stamp issued on 19 September 2022 for the Foundation which included a 10c charity surcharge. The card was printed by Lowe-Martin. Stamp News - 23

Postal Stationery Help Required for 2d Roo Stationery Die Research Rod Buchko writes that Recently, my collection of the 2d Roo stationery die (Figure 17) reached a critical mass stage. Originally formed to acquire a representative sampling of the various users, it has become an ambitious research project. It now contains sufficient covers, pieces and cut-outs to begin an analysis of the dies used by the printer. The limited sampling of 17 examples produced at least 4 distinct types. I now have a database of 50 examples ranging in scan resolution from 72 dpi to 2400 dpi. The recent ‘OS’ examples represent the 5th type. Unfortunately, 4 other scans present problems. They either represent a 6th type, which is seemingly impossible, or they are precursors to one of the previous types. The variable resolution of the scans I have is not helping to resolve this conundrum of types. Do any society members have examples in their collections that could enlarge my database potentially enabling improved identification of the types of dies employed? The minimum

scan resolution I require is 600 dpi at 100%. 1200 dpi is better but 2400 dpi is preferred since some of the flaws, such as shading line & frame line breaks, can be easily identified and confirmed at the higher resolutions. Examples in any condition are acceptable. Please email me on ian. mcmahon4@bigpond.com if you are able to help Rod and I will forward your email to him. 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete Prestamped Envelope The 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete postage-paid envelope (Figure 18) was issued on 11 November 2022 to mark the anniversary of the 1941 Battle of Crete. Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation Last month we advised of Australia having two National Exhibitions during 2023, with one in Hobart, Tasmania and the second in Perth, Western Australia. As a collector you may be contemplating whether you want to attempt exhibiting at either of these exhibitions for the first time. With this in view it is timely to look at how to exhibit. This month we publish the first part of a two-part series to assist first time exhibitors. The two brochures are also available through the APF web site. An Introduction to Exhibiting Part 1 “The ultimate in stamp collecting” Making the Initial Decision There are many people who collect by themselves without knowing other collectors, or without being members of clubs. In general, they tend to just try to collect all stamps according to some list usually from a catalogue. By being a regular member of a club you have probably already advanced past this stage. You see what other people collect, and you are able to get feedback about what are more desirable items to add to your collection. This is important. As we all have limited amounts of money to spend in expanding our collection, it is essential we direct that money to providing the greatest pleasure from our pastime. When you first started collecting there were no restrictions upon what or how you collected, nor were there any restrictions on the way that you stored your material. Whether you wrote up your collection or simply left it without comment, was again your decision. If you were invited to give a display of your material at the club, again there were no restrictions on how you presented the material. Generally, you were thanked for this display and the members showed their appreciation by acclamation. In other words, up to this stage, there are no 40 - Stamp News

rules governing what you have done, nor is anyone looking over your shoulder. Many collectors are happy with this scenario and have no desire to go any further with their enjoyment. Exhibiting is regarded as the ultimate in philately as you are embarking on a whole new experience, in that you are having your work and material assessed by an independent source. Exhibiting introduces rules that govern and guide what you display and how it should be done. These rules are necessary to ensure that all exhibitors are on the same playing field, and to guide the judges so that all similar exhibits are judged equally. These rules govern the types of material which may be included, how it is to be presented, how it is to be judged, and the conduct of the judges in the judging process. Exhibiting is competitive, but it is not a case of selecting first, second and third. Each exhibit is judged on its own merits and the person you are competing against is yourself. There are additional benefits arising from exhibiting • It is always pleasing to receive compliments and constructive criticism about your exhibit from other knowledgeable collectors. • You can meet other exhibitors with similar collecting interests to yourself and exchange ideas. • Your material is now known by a much wider group, any one of whom may advise the location of an item to enhance your collection. • You may have already done some writing up for your own album pages, or for club displays, thus requiring you to do some research. From this research many people have discovered that some of their own items are better than they originally thought. • Thus the appreciation and knowledge of your own material increases, and thereby

Russell Boylan

Philatelic Development Officer, APF you derive more enjoyment not only from the exhibit, but your overall collection • This research also assists in identifying weaknesses in the exhibit where additional or replacement material is needed. • Assistance with research is available from the Australian Philatelic Federation (website www.apf.org.au/research.htm) or the various State Councils listed at the end of this article As a precursor to exhibiting it is beneficial to have studied existing exhibits, specifically the layout or presentation of the material and the Title Page, the first page of each exhibit. The presentation shows how the available space can be best utilized as well as illustrating the types of material available. The Title Page will be addressed in more detail in Part 2. This study is not always easy to do as major exhibitions only occur every two to four years in each state. However, many Clubs have regular displays from established exhibitors. Take the opportunity to visit other Clubs and examine these displays from a wider point of view, rather than just admiring the material. Details of Club programs are available for some states through the APF website. At the time of publication, full details are available for New South Wales and Western Australia, and some clubs programs are included for South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. Keep monitoring the APF website for expansion of the included information. To further assist in studying existing exhibits, there is a Virtual International Philatelic Exhibition on the web always worth looking at. The website is called Exponet, whose address is www. japhila.cz. This site has in excess of 770 exhibits from 50 countries. About Exhibiting Once you become committed to exhibiting you must be prepared to continually improve your exhibit, as an exhibit will change many times

before it nears the ultimate peak of perfection. These changes will generally occur over a period of quite a few years. You must also be prepared to be disappointed and criticized. When you prepare an exhibit your expectations are generally high. You sincerely believe that you have magnificent material and it is superbly presented. It is somewhat deflating when a judge identifies weaknesses in your exhibit, and then proceeds to point out many ways in which it can be improved. To be successful these circumstances must be accepted and used as stepping stones in the development of your exhibit. The Exhibition Classes In exhibiting there are a number of exhibition classes. A class is a description of the type of material or the method of presentation of that material. Some of these classes are very specific, such as Traditional Philately which relates purely to stamps, or restrictive such as Aerophilately which limits the type of material which may be included. There are also classes which allow for a wide range of material such as Thematics, as well as classes which permit the inclusion of non-philatelic material, such as the Open and Polar classes. Most of the classes are recognised on a worldwide basis, but there are some classes which have been developed specifically for Australian collectors to widen the scope of exhibiting, and thus allow more collectors to enjoy the associated experience. These latter classes have also been picked up by New Zealand. The classes currently used within Australia are : World-wide Classes • Traditional Philately • Postal History has three sub-classes: • Postal History • Marcophily • Historical, Social & Special Studies • Postal Stationery Stamp News - 41

Malta - Part II

Hello and welcome to Part Twelve of my tour of British Commonwealth stamps. I hope you enjoy looking at this month’s stamps, along with some interesting philatelic details and trivia

relating to some of the Malta George V issues. I had intended to also write on George VI and early QEII as well in this Part II but once I started writing on George VI realised I would be leaving out what I think is some interesting material on the George V issues if I tried to include both GVI and QEII. So future pieces will cover GVI and QEII. Something most people do not realise is that the Malta stamps with the portrait of King George V did not appear until almost four years into his reign. An unusually long period I think. There were ten stamps in the first issue released between 1914 and 1921 and these make for an interesting collecting area in their own right because of the various watermark positions (upright, inverted and reversed) various colour shades, paper and even a few flaw varieties. They were issued with watermark Multiple Crown CA with values from ¼d to 5 shillings. Fig 1 shows the three value designs. Between 1915 and 1919 the Valletta Harbour pictorial design of 1901 which I showed in Part I was re-issued as a 4d value. The 1899 Emblem Figure of Malta was also reissued in 1919 and the shipwreck of St Paul, which we also saw in the previous article, was re-issued, also with the Multiple Crown CA watermark. Fig 2 shows these. Some of these stamp values were again reissued between 1921 and 1922 with the Multiple Script CA watermark. One reason for mentioning this is Top left : Figure 1 Left : Figure 2

by Michael Dodd

Figure 3 the catalogue prices can be considerably different, and just to give one example; the 1914 ¼d stamp in very good used condition is catalogued at 10 pence (GBP) whereas the 1922 issue with Multiple Script CA watermark is catalogued Used at £40. Not the sort of mistake one wants to make if selling, or when buying the latter only to find out it is the Multiple Crown CA watermark. See Fig 3 The next George VI issue I would like to mention is particularly interesting. It is often referred to as the

Melita issue. It is a series of dual purpose postage and revenue stamps issued by the Crown Colony of Malta between 1922 and 1926. There are 15 values with three stamps issued with two different colours/ shades (the 1d, the 3d and the £1 values). Fig 4 shows the two 1d and 3d values). The £1 values are black and carmine, red and black and bright carmine I do not have copies to show of the £1 although I wish I did as they command a pleasant catalogue value. The issue is known as the Melita issue because it shows the Melita which is the national personification of Malta. The name originated from the Punic-Roman town of Melita, the ancient capital of Malta which eventually developed into the city of Medina. It is the symbolic depiction of a country as a woman. And makes for, in my view, a stunning design on the stamps. This issue was a commemorative issue as they celebrated the island’s new status as a self-governing colony following a new constitution in 1921. They were also seen as a definitive issue intended for regular use over an extended period of time

Figure 5 The stamps were designed by two leading Maltese artists, Edward Caruana Dingli and Gianni Vella. Dingli’s designs were used on the pence and pound values and Vella’s design on the shilling values shown in Fig 5. The designs were poorly received when they were issued, and Dingli himself criticized the execution

of the design. In subsequent years, however, Dingli’s design came to be regarded as one of the most iconic Malta stamps. There is one more George V issue I would like to briefly mention because it has some stunning designs. This is the 1926–27 issue. The lower value stamps are rather plain but the 1 shilling to 10 shilling values are very attractive and depict some interesting topics, including Medina (described as Mdina using the traditional spelling) a Gozo fishing boat and the neolithic temple Mnajdra SG 168,169 and 171 respectively and as shown in Fig 6 There’s plenty more from Malta to enjoy and I hope you will join me in next month’s issue when I will show and talk about some GVI issues - some really beautifully designed stamps. See you then. Michael can be contacted on cddstamps@gmail. com or visit him at his online store - cddstamps - on the Hipstamp Marketplace

Norway Post Christmas 2022 Gingerbread is most often made at Christmas. The world’s largest “gingerbread town” is built every December in the Norwegian city of Bergen. And in 2016, Holmestrand proudly presented the world’s longest gingerbread train in connection with the official opening of its new railway station inside the mountain. In December 2021, Norway Post and the TV 2 breakfast show God Morgen Norge jointly launched a contest on Facebook and Instagram asking people to send in photos of their own gingerbread creations. The four winning entries would be the motifs for the 2022 Christmas stamps. The entries included gingerbread houses, gingerbread men and other shapes, and decorations. Two winners were selected by an expert panel of judges consisting of Wenche Andersen from God Morgen Norge, stamp designer Camilla Kvien Jensen and Stamp Director Halvor Fasting. The other two winners were voted by God Morgen Norge viewers.

Festive greetings from Switzerland

There are countless traditions and rituals around Christmas. These stamp designs draw our attention to the many preparations for the big day and surprise us with delicate tongue-in-cheek humour. The wintry forest is a hive of activity – the hare has got a wonderful Christmas tree and is speeding out of the forest on a sledge, the proud deer have got tangled up in the warmly glowing fairy lights and the little mouse is trying to carry Christmas mail home intact. The designs were produced as part of a competition, and Swiss Post employees had the opportunity to vote for their favourites. For many people, the numerous habitual and cherished preparations for the festive season include writing personal Christmas greetings – and of course sending presents. With these three designs with face values of 90, 110 and 180 centimes, there is now an especially pretty way to do so.

GREENLANDIC STAMPS FOR NOTAPHILISTS Stamp collectors are frequently referred to as philatelists while coin collectors are known as numismatists. The term for the collecting of banknotes and paper money is notaphily and I am sure that many banknote collectors read Stamp News each month without realising that they are notaphilists. There are many similarities between postage stamps and banknotes. They have frequently been produced by the same companies using advanced printing techniques to make the stamps or banknotes difficult to forge. In many instances the same designs have been used for both banknotes and postage stamps. I know of no banknotes specifically depicting postage stamps but there are numerous stamps featuring banknotes. On 15 May 2017 Greenland issued

a set of two stamps and two souvenir sheets illustrating two 1911 banknotes. Greenland is the world’s largest island but its population is tiny. Norsemen settled on Greenland more than 1000 years ago sharing the land with the Inuits. Ever since then Greenland has been a Danish colony but today the island enjoys a considerable degree of independence. For centuries the colony was run by the Royal Greenlandic Trading Company with headquarters in Copenhagen. The Company maintained coastal trading posts and handled all exports and imports. Thus it had complete control of the island’s economy. The local population survived on hunting and fishing. In the local communities barter trade solved most business transactions and there was little need

Christer Brunström for coins or banknotes. Also company officials believed that the Inuits found it difficult to handle currency in the form of paper money. It seems they preferred coins. However, the first notes were introduced in 1803. They were a kind of token that could be used to make purchases in the Company’s stores. In fact, this remained the main purpose of Greenland’s paper currency until the late 1960s. Today Danish coins and banknotes are used in Greenland but there is talk about an independent Greenlandic currency. During the 19th century there were several issues of Greenlandic banknotes or paper tokens. The new set of stamps features two of the four banknotes introduced in 1911. The 25-øre note shows an eider duck, the 50 øre a seal, the 1 krone

a reindeer and the 5 kroner a polar bear. The central designs of the 25- and 50-øre banknotes are depicted on the 20:- and 39:- (Fig. 1) stamps respectively. Thus we have two stamps of special interest to collectors of wildlife on stamps. There were also two souvenir sheets showing the entire banknotes along with tabs to the right which can be removed. The text on the tabs explains that the designs are old Greenlandic banknotes. The original 1911 banknotes also had a tab that could be removed. The stamp set was created by Bertil Skov Jørgensen, a Danish artist who has already designed a few stamps for Greenland. In 1872, Danish National Bank Director Moritz Levy was asked to look into the monetary system in

GREENLANDIC STAMPS FOR NOTAPHILISTS Greenland. He discovered that most Greenlanders kept their banknotes in their boots until they were transformed into a sticky mess at which point they were thrown away. This anecdote indicates that the Greenlanders had little faith in paper money. The total face value of the two stamps and the two souvenir sheets is DKK 118 which equals about AU$25 (and very possibly a lot more from your favourite stamp dealer). However, this is a small price to pay as the original 1911 banknotes are very scarce and especially so in nice condition. The Greenlandic Postal Service frequently releases long series of stamps with one or two new issues over a period of many years. The old Greenlandic banknotes was one such series. In 2018 there were two new issues – the DKK 38 value features a reindeer (Fig. 2) and a polar bear is shown on the second DDK 40 sheet/stamp

There were two more stamps and souvenir sheets in 2019. The DKK 26 value shows a polar bear (Fig. 3) and the DKK 56 stamp features a whale. There was only one stamp with the accompanying souvenir sheet in 2020. The DKK 26.50 value features a sailing ship (Fig. 4). It seems the series ended with a 1953 banknote showing a portrait of Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen (1879-1933). He was the founder of the colony of Thule which I have discussed in a previous column here in Stamp News. The denomination is DKK 47 and the design is a lot more professional than the earlier examples of old Greenlandic banknotes (Fig. 5). The Greenlandic Post Office obviously wanted to make the most of these issues as there were both stamps and souvenir sheets. I suppose most notaphilists will be satisfied with the souvenir sheet version.
