Actress, Olivia Colman performed her very own royal heist. The Oscar winner, who played Queen Elizabeth II on seasons three and four of Netflix’s The Crown, managed to snag a special memento before she left Buckingham Palace behind for good. The third season of The Crown opens with a shot of Olivia—in our first glimpse of her as the late Queen—admiring a new stamp design with her face on it. “On my first day on The Crown, which was about the stamp incident,” Olivia explained “there was an envelope on the desk and it was ‘To her Majesty, the Queen’ and it had my face on a stamp.” Because The Crown is so keen on detail, Olivia means it was her actual face, as the Queen, on the stamp, not Elizabeth’s. After admiring the craftsmanship, Olivia revealed, “A lovely props person said, ‘I’m not allowed to do this, but take that.’”

Coveting your neighbour’s marmot? Reported at https://www.cbc.ca

The Vancouver Island marmot is to be featured on a U.S. postal stamp — one of a new collection featuring 20 endangered US species. As its name would suggest, the marmot is found solely on Vancouver Island so it’s puzzling, perhaps, that a U.S. institution would include it in an American collection. Asked why this endangered Canadian species is featured on a U.S. postal stamp, the US Postal Services responded that the Vancouver Island marmot is a ‘symbol of conservation’ as one of the “world’s most endangered animals.” “Its plight points to several key aspects of endangerment: It is affected by climate change, an abundance of predators, and by forestry practic6 - Stamp News

es within its small, isolated range,” the USPS said. According to British Columbian authorities, there were fewer than 30 marmots in 2003. Thanks to conservation efforts, more than 200 were counted in 2021. The image for the stamp was taken by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, who is on a mission to photograph every endangered species around the globe, should they become extinct.

Going down the rabbit hole in 2023 Reported at https://english.news.cn

2023 is a year of the Water Rabbit, starting from January 22nd, 2023 (Chinese New Year), and ending on February 9th, 2024. The sign of Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture. 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope. People born in a year of the Rabbit are believed to be vigilant, witty, quick-minded, and ingenious. Previous ’rabbit’ years are 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999 and 2011 Here are a selection of this years’’ lunar new year issues:

od of 14 days was also introduced. “You will directly receive your code, which is valid for 14 days,” Deutsche Post instructed. However, the Regional Court of Cologne has now ruled this restriction is invalid. According to the law, claims arising from a sales contract become time-barred after three years. The Post’s clause deviates from this “in an unacceptable manner”. After 14 days, the Post simply retains the money for postage codes that have already been paid for but not yet used, without providing anything in return. Deutsche Post claimed that the limited validity of the mobile stamp was necessary due to the limited number of characters and to prevent abuse, which the judges said was not comprehensible. The ruling is not yet legally binding pending an appeal by Deutsche Post.

At a ceremony at TTPost’s National Mail Centre, the managing director said TTPost was celebrating a major milestone – the unveiling of its stamp to mark 60 years of independence. “Trinidad and Tobago: one nation; discipline, production tolerance. Together we aspire, together we achieve. These words speak of a nation progressing effectively as one people. The four stamps – $1, $2.50, $3.75 and $5.25 – each have a watermarked background of the national flag with a silver diamond to represent 60 years. The stamps celebrate the health care system, sustainable agricultural system, national growth and future prosperity.

A Christmas miracle?

Reported at https://www.mirror.co.uk Bev Hamer and her sisters were given their late father’s stamp collection after he passed away and spent almost 20 years looking for a missing £400 Christmas stamp. The festive stamp was not part of the collection when it was handed over and its whereabouts remained a mystery for decades. That was until Bev and her husband Jon Hamer discovered it in a toolbox – still in mint condition.

Niagara for the ages

Reported at https://www.insauga.com Niagara Falls has been an image on Canadian postage stamps far less than most would think, given that the natural wonder is Canada’s leading tourist destination. The one that generates the most interest – and present-day value – is the 1935 Canadian 20-cent stamp. As the average letter cost three cents in those days, a 20 cent stamp could have covered a small parcel. A quick glance on eBay shows this particular stamp is

selling for anywhere from $5 to well over $400. This stamp itself, designed by Herman Herbert Schwartz and engraved by Arthur C. Vogel, shows a view of Niagara Falls with the Canadian Horseshoe Falls as the centre of interest. The next two Niagara Falls stamps are far more recent. In 2003, the Canada Post Office issued a large series of stamps, showing iconic scenery from across the country. In that sheet with a number of different images, Niagara Falls was just one in a series of five. And finally, there is a Canadian stamp issued in 2009 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Boundary Waters Treaty. The 54-cent stamp, has two blended images, depicting Niagara Falls on the U.S. side and the Horseshoe Falls at night.

MAIL TO COLONEL EUGENE GORMAN DURING WORLD WAR II From time to time envelopes come on the market with several military censor marks. Collectors are sometimes impressed with these items. What is the reason for the item to be censored more than once? This mail is either addressed to Gorman, Commissioner of the Australian Comfort Fund, or the Australian

FIGURE 1: An inwards cover from Australia to Gorman which has had applied to it four different censor marks and two Army postmarks, both dated 22 July 1941. This cover was posted and travelled to the Middle East, normally but received special philatelic treatment on arrival by Gorman’s batman.

Comforts Fund. I have even seen newspaper wrappers addressed to Gorman marked ‘TOP SECRET’. Norman Carlyon, in his book, ‘I Remember Blamey’, provides the explanation for these potentially impressive items. Carlyon, who was on General Blamey’s staff, tells how General Blamey had to return to Australia from The Middle East and was too busy to have the required inoculations for the trip in which he had to travel through African

Ronald M. Lee countries. Carlyon, wishing to save Blamey from the problems of after effects, likely after the inoculations, mentioned his concern to Gorman who regularly flew, as the Australian Comforts fund Commissioner, to various locations where Australian troops were serving. Gorman showed Carlyon his health certificate emblazoned with appropriate rubber stamps and doctor’s signatures. Gorman explained that he never had inoculations and he could arrange a similar health certificate for Blamey. When asked how he could arrange this he replied that his batman was very handy with rubber stamps and enjoyed applying the stamps to any document. This was the explanation for the various censor marks and other marks on correspondence to Gorman. These items had not been censored several times but on arrival at Gorman’s office the marks had been applied by Gorman’s batman. The question then is how, as collectors, should we treat this mail? Should these be rejected as being philatelic? I suggest not. These items did not receive any special philatelic treatment. They were carried from Australia to Palestine in the normal way. Therefore they can be included in any collection to illustrate the route traversed together with an explanation as to what occurred when the items arrived in Gorman’s office. Major Gorman, later Colonel Gorman, had been an infantry officer in WWI and won the Military Cross at Bullencourt in 1917. During the inter-war years he practiced as a lawyer in Melbourne and was K.C. (Kings Counselor).

France 1938: Inauguration of the Australian Great War monument I have written two previous articles (Ref. 1 and 2) on the French postal card stationery issues for the inauguration of The Australian Great War monument unveiled on July 22, 1938, at Villers-Bretonneux, France. I continue to collect and exhibit the stamps and postal cards. Quoting from an official Post Office letter (translated from French): “A 1.75 francs stamp will be released for the visit of the King of Great Britain to France. It will be sold on June 28. Also to be released are two sets of postcards (5 different views) representing the monument for the Australian fighters of Villers-Bretonneux. Some cards will have a 55-centimes stamp (for mail inside France), others a 1- franc stamp (for international mail). They will be sold only in Villers-Bretonneux and its surroundings. But you can also buy it from the Seine’s postmaster. All the mail given to the temporary post office close to the Australian monument,

At that time, the factory was equipped with four rotary colour presses and a photo-etching workshop. In 1906, the firm was renamed Imprimerie Crété, known for its postcard printing, with office locations at two rue des Italiens, Paris, and a factory located in Corbeil (Seine-et-Oises). SARAWAK 1889/1897 Sir Charles Brooke complete set 16 MVLH -

Including both the SG listed shades. SG 8-21. Bright colours MVLH, many superb and very fresh, a few with the usual feint aging found on this series. (Used are worth the same or more than used of course!) SG Cat £750 = $1,500. Bought well in an Estate - a key British Asia Definitive set and almost never offered complete – have had not had one for 20 years $A499 – Stock 684KR

GB Meaty M+U stamp collection on leaves Queen Victoria to early QE2 SG $7,500 for $A600! -

VERY juicy lot from Queen Victoria 1d imperf, to early QE2 era, and solid in all reigns. Lots of postally used blocks - they are SCARCE, as they are here and highly under-rated thus. Much MUH along it too - even in earlies. Some very useful material here - not all pages shown here of course. An ebayer GOLDMINE to break all this down into 200 lots. SG Cat marked on each page is £3,765 - $A7.500. Condition a bit mixed as on all these oldie lots, but much superb condition better pieces sighted here when taking pix, and better than usually seen. Re-housing it all in a black page stockbook would do wonders etc, as untidily arranged now. HEAPS of pix here - tinyurl.com/GBpages - Out it goes for just $A600 or $US400. Stock 576DX

1932 Kangaroo 5/- Grey and Yellow CofA **MUH** with part John Ash imprint AND Plate variety AND ‘Thin Paper’ just $A995! -

Has the very popular and constant ‘Open-Mouthed Kangaroo’ variety from Right pane, position R55. Fresh MUH original gum regummers cannot do corner or margin copies of course! At the height of The Great Depression WHO had a few days wages to spend on a new stamp?! Far better perfs and centering than usually seen on these. ACSC Cat 46B, at $1,750 as a MUH single with NO variety and NO imprint and on thin paper! Retail is over $1,000 for any bogbasic MUH single. The variety is cat over double a normal stamp = $3,750. And a John Ash Imprint block 4 is cat SIXTEEN times more than a single normal. So to extrapolate that, this is technically a $15,000 catalogued single! And to top it all off, is on a VERY thin paper as can clearly be seen on scan - unreported yet on 5/-, but does of course exist on the 6d CofA etc. Have just reported this find to Dr. Geoff Kellow. Anyway, despite all this, from ME, less than other dealers sell a normal MUH example for! $A995 - Stock 892DX

Hello and welcome to Part Thirteen of my tour of British Commonwealth stamps and now the third in my series on the stamps of Malta. I hope you find these stamps interesting. There is so much one could write but for historical interest of places shown on the stamps I will leave you to decide what interests you the most. I hope I have chosen wisely to show a few that will whet

your appetite for seeing more. The first GVI stamps were, as perhaps one might expect, the Coronation issue of 1937 Fig 1 is a very familiar issue that was issued for 50 Commonwealth Countries. Fig 1 shows SG 215 from the set of three of the issue (SG 214 – 215). The next issue was the 1938 definitive issue which included 21 stamps with various designs showing Malta scenes and historical places. I have chosen the following three to show - Fig 2. For the basic set this is an easily collectable issue and can be found at reasonable prices. There are a few varieties, in both mint and used condition that are worth knowing about, and which command a premium if and when they become available As I have said many times, always be aware of varieties in British Commonwealth issues. Perhaps you have one! SG 220a mint has a catalogue price of £400 against the normal example of £3.75 and the used example with the variety as shown is catalogued at £90 compared to a normal copy at £0.30. Not the sort of variety one wants to miss when looking at this stamp. Similar catalogue price differences can be found for both SG 221a and 222b bb for both mint and used examples. So we have an established stamp issue for Malta stamps from 1933 to 1948 but the political history of the time sees the same stamps re-issued because between 1933 and 1946 the constitution of Malta was suspended, and the island was under British rule as a Crown colony.

by Michael Dodd

It was not until 1947 that a new constitution was implemented and Malta returned to self Government. As with many British Commonwealth countries new stamps were required. In the case of Malta this came in the form of the 1938 issue being overprinted with the SELF GOVERNMENT 1947 overprint. Fig 4 shows three examples. In this reissue there are also 21 stamps but looking at the catalogue you will find some have different colours than the original 1938 issue. Again an easily collectible issue but one with the same or even a few additional varieties to look out for. Also to note, as you can see in the image, Fig 4 the SELF GOVERNMENT 1947 overprint is reading diagonally to the

Above : Figure 3 Below : Figure 4 lower right on some values, but to the upper right in the example shown of the 5s value. I am just noting this for interest rather than any value or error related reason. In next months issue I will finish showing some Malta stamps with a few from the early issues of Queen Elizabeth II. See you then. Michael can be contacted on cddstamps@gmail.com or visit him at his online store - cddstamps - on the Hipstamp Marketplace

Identifying the repair of the ‘NAUP.U’ variety There is no doubt that one of the most appealing and most sought after GV varieties is the 191623 Nauru overprint on the Great Britain George V 1912-22 issue with the word ‘NAURU’ but showing the variety ‘NAUP.U’. This variety appeared on position R6/2 of the sheet. The 2d and 4d examples illustrated show the variety clearly. (Figures 1 & 2) The broken ‘R’ which forms the variety ‘P.’ can be found in forms where parts of the break are still showing as per the 1d and the 6d strips (Figures 3 & 4). However, another interesting constant variety, not yet entered in the Stanley Gibbons catalogue, which also exists is the broken left leg to the letter ‘N’ on position 6/3 of the sheet, the stamp next to the ‘NAUP.U’ variety. This variety should not be confused with the short left stroke

Figures 1 & 2 46 - Stamp News

Abed Najjar

Figures 3 & 4

to ‘N’ variety on R1/8 which is illustrated alongside and which is entered in the SG catalogue. The broken left leg to the letter ‘N’, constant variety can be seen on all the examples above and also on the ½d block of four and the 1½d pair

Figure 6

Figure 7

Figure 5

(Figures 5 & 6). This variety however has shed a new light into the known ‘NAUP.U’ variety. What is most interesting when examining the ½d block which clearly shows the broken ‘N’ on

position 6/3, is that position 6/2 which should show the ‘NAUP.U’ variety now shows a normal ‘NAURU’ but with a bulge in the letter ‘R’ (Figure 7). The 1½ pair also shows this irregularity. The broken ‘N’ variety indicates that the ‘NAUP.U’ error was detected and repaired after some sheets were overprinted. This repair, which will be hard to detect without certainty on single stamps, can only be ascertained on positional pieces.

Abed Najjar is a UK based expert philatelist, known for his discovery of the famous triple franking of the Great Britain Plate 77 1d Red on cover. He also provides expert opinions on Middle Eastern rarities

NZ Post : Katherine Mansfield Katherine Mansfield is Aotearoa New Zealand’s most internationally recognised historical literary figure, remembered for her distinctive prose and adventurous life. Katherine’s time in Wellington had a significant influence on many of her stories. These stamps celebrate the writer’s legacy, her work, and her New Zealand connections. Created with support from the Katherine Mansfield House and Garden and the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington, each stamp includes a quote, a photo of Katherine at a different stage of her life, and a significant item in the background. Together they uniquely commemorate the author’s life and legacy. Date of issue: 1 February 2023

philatelic news Maiden voyage of RRS Sir David Attenborough Britain’s new polar research ship, RRS Sir David Attenborough, completed its successful first season in Antarctica in 2022. The ship is one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world and will carry out important scientific research in some of the most extreme environments on Earth, as well as providing vital supplies to the UK’s research stations in both the Arctic and Antarctic. The ship, once almost known as Boaty McBoatface, departed the UK in November 2021 officially entering Antarctica on 13 December, and arriving at the UK’s largest research facility on the continent, Rothera, on 17 December. During its eight months in Antarctica the ship’s first season saw it conduct science trials, transport people and cargo to four of the British Antarctic Survey’s research stations and complete its ice trials. The ship returned to the UK 14 June 2022. Being a Polar Ice Class 5 ship, meaning it can operate year-round in medium first-year ice, the ship can break through ice one-metre thick at a speed of three knots (5.6km/h). When ice breaking, the ship rises up on the ice and uses its weight – 15,000 tonnes – to

break through. The ship’s sensitive acoustic instruments are housed within the hull and covered with a protective material to ensure they are protected when the ship is in ice. Other instruments, such as the farsounder forward-looking sonar, which warns of navigational hazards under the water (such as unchartered rocks), is fitted on a retractable pole and will only be deployed when the ship is not ice-breaking. The ship also has a moon pool – a four-by-four metre hole through the middle of the ship

– through which researchers can deploy instruments, even when in ice. Reflecting on the ship’s first journey South, Captain Will Whatley, Master of RRS Sir David Attenborough said: “Everyone on board was thrilled to arrive at Rothera for the first time. This was a really exciting and proud moment for us, and another huge milestone to have achieved. As we travelled further South, we had the chance to put the ship through its paces in Antarctic conditions – and I’m pleased to report the ship performed really well”. On 22 November 2022 RRS Sir David Attenborough departed UK for its second voyage to Antarctica. During its second mission ‘south’ the floating laboratory will transfer station teams, food, science equipment, cargo and fuel to British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) research stations. The ship will also be carrying out trials of polar science equipment in the extreme polar conditions, a critical step in the ship’s commissioning. “With the world’s eyes on COP27 in Egypt, and climate change at the forefront of all our minds, we are reminded of the critical role this ship is going to play over the next three decades in improving our understanding of climate change and the impacts on our environment and society.” Professor Dame Jane Francis, Director of (BAS). At a cost of £200 million, the ship was commissioned by the Natural Environment Research Council, built by Cammell Laird and is operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). NZ Post : Avatar Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Shot in Aotearoa New Zealand, the new film combines industryleading technology with pristine locations to take audiences even deeper into the alien world of Pandora. Pandora is what Earth once was: a pristine world unsullied by technology and the ravages of industry. In order to realise the captivating world of Pandora, director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau shot Avatar: The Way of Water in a number of locations around Aotearoa New Zealand. The new film combines Kiwi landscapes with the industry-leading innovations that Cameron is renowned for. Cutting-edge filmmaking technology is the key that opens the door to telling stories in more immersive and engaging ways than ever before. By combining breathtaking real-world landscapes with boundary-pushing technologies the Avatar filmmakers have created spectacular new worlds and populated them with compelling characters and themes on a scale the likes of which audiences have yet to experience. MONACO : A TINY PHILATELIC GIANT The Principality of Monaco is one of the world’s smallest nations but when it comes to the hobby of philately it is somewhat of a giant and especially in connection with stamps of the highest technical and artistic quality. I was reminded of this on a recent visit to Monaco where I attended the MonacoPhil exhibition in late November 2022. As part of the dealer bourse, some ten engravers and stamp designers were on hand to sign their products and to chat with the visitors. I spent a few moments discussing recess printed stamps with Martin Mörck, very possibly the most distinguished stamp engraver today. He frequently works for the postal services of Monaco, France and several other countries which still issue a certain number of engraved stamps. We both shared the opinion that engraved stamp designs are far more attractive than most offset printed stamps which seem to be the norm today and for the simple reason that they are a lot cheaper to print. The Principality has a total area of just 2.02

square kilometres and a population of slightly more than 38,000 people. Thus the entire country can easily be shown on a tiny postage stamp. Depicted in Fig. 1 is a view of the Principality on a 1978 1-franc postage stamp marking the inauguration of the Congress Centre. Despite its tiny size walking around is far from easy as most streets tend to lead uphill. Fortunately Monaco has a most efficient transport service operating several different bus routes. At the time of our visit the bus service was for free Monaco occupies a rather narrow strip of land along the coastline. The border with France is never far away and walking just a few hundred metres uphill you arrive in the town of Beausoleil which is in France. It was in 1956 that Monaco was very much in the news. Magazines all over the world were filled with photos of the romantic marriage between Prince Rainier and the American actress Grace Kelly. To celebrate the event, Monaco released a splendid

Christer Brunström eight-value set featuring the newly-weds (Fig. 2). Sadly Princess Grace died in a car crash in 1982. We visited the Cathedral in the Old Town of Monaco where she rests along with her husband and other members of the ruling Grimaldi family. Financially Monaco was in rather bad shape in the early 1950s but the marriage saved the day and since then the Principality has gone from strength to strength. Another most interesting personality in Monaco’s more recent history was Prince Albert I (1848-1922). He took a strong interest in polar and oceanographic research. Thus it comes as no surprise that Monaco has a most impressive Oceanographic Museum which is located in the Old Town high above the Mediterranean Sea. The prince has been honoured on several stamps. The museum has a most interesting aquarium which it is a pleasure to visit. In 1985 Monaco released a set of five colourful stamps (Fig. 3) featuring different fishes in the aquarium. Prince Albert I was also a philatelist assembling a

fairly large collection of Monaco. It is now housed in the Stamp and Coin Museum. Monaco is a country which in many ways mimics France. This miniature country is operated like a very large corporation in the hospitality business. Throughout the year there is a wide range of activities to attract visitors from all over the world. The principality is particularly targeting the rich and the famous and Monaco’s two harbours are packed with large and obviously extremely costly luxury yachts. Prince Albert spends a lot of time attending all the different activities. He opened the MonacoPhil exhibition and he was the guest of honour at the banquet in the luxurious Hôtel de Paris located next to the famous Casino where many fortunes have been lost. It is interesting to note that the citizens of Monaco are not allowed to gamble at the casino. Let’s take a look at some of the more or less annual events which draw large crowds of foreign visitors to Monaco. The Monte Carlo Rally has a long history going

Stamp News - 51

MONACO : A TINY PHILATELIC GIANT back to 1911. The rally used to start somewhere in Europe with Monte Carlo as its goal. The 1962 rally started in Oslo, the capital of Norway, and a special stamp was of course released to publicise this important event (Fig. 4). Today the rally usually takes place in the south-eastern part of France. When walking around in Monaco I noticed that many elegantly dressed women were accompanied by a small dog. Dogs are popular pets not only in Monaco but also in the rest of the world. International canine exhibitions are a regular fixture in the principality and these events have frequently been honoured on postage stamps. Shown nearby is a selection of dogs on a 1981 stamp (Fig. 5). On one of our walks in the Fontvieille neighbourhood (actually built on land reclaimed from the sea), we spotted a circus tent located next to the Princess Grace Rose Garden. Monaco has been staging circus festivals for a very long time and on numerous occasions there have been circus related stamp issues. To

illustrate this story I have selected the 1975 Circus Festival issue (Fig. 6). The first MonacoPhil exhibition took place in 1997 and it is usually held every two years attracting some of the world’s top philatelists. The 2022 edition marked the 25th anniversary of MonacoPhil which is organised by the Club de Monte-Carlo, the Stamp and Coin Museum and Monaco’s Postal Service. Of particular interest is an exhibition of 100 selected rarities provided by the members of the Club of Monte-Carlo, a most select philatelic entity with a membership restricted to 100 of the world’s most advanced philatelists. Monaco is certainly tiny but the principality undoubtedly has a lot to offer. For those who would like to delve into Monaco’s philatelic history, the Stamp and Coin Museum in Fontvieille is a treasure trove. A close inspection of the many exhibits will reveal that Monaco has released some of the world’s most beautiful stamps.
