GB 1883 10/- Blue QV Superb U, SG Cat $1,550 - $A499! - These stamps were used

on the very heaviest parcels - 10/- back 140 years back, was $100s cost in today’s money. A week’s wages. Most were used to Australia as that was the highest mail zone rating. Being licked onto heavy parcels for 10,000 miles by sea, they got banged around, and scuffed, and easily torn, thinned, creased, and indented. AND the UK Parcel Post cancellers in this era were generally the very heavy bootheel ‘Killers’ - totally obliterating the design most often. And being a pale blue colour, all scuffs and transit marks show readily. Absolutely lovely colour - these often fade badly, due to the security ink used. Deceased owner had a receipt for a lot of money as ‘Cobalt’ (Cat £8,250) but I do not really agree. If it is, you are the winner! Clean and flat and fresh and attractive, excellent perfs and centering for these, as you can see, very light cancel too for hi-vals, and totally free of the usual hinges, thins, creases, and typical gook and gunk and ageing etc, near always seen on these, after 140 years. You can buy faded, ugly, super heavy cancelled, off centred roughies for $250. Or pay $499 for SUPERB - no contest when YOU sell. SG 183 Cat £785=$A1,550 as FU. Stamps in the News - Globally! Art on stamps: Ukraine

Reported at www.theguardian.com Ukraine has issued a postage stamp with a reproduction of a Banksy mural depicting a boy defeating a grown man in judo, to mark the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion. It was painted by the anonymous British street artist, Banksy, on a demolished wall in the town of Borodianka, north-west of Kyiv, where many buildings were reduced to rubble by Russian aircraft at the start of the invasion. The image draws inspiration from the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, known to be a black belt in judo, and depicts a young judoka representing Ukraine knocking down a grown man. The phrase “FCK PTN” in Cyrillic has been added to the lower left part of the new stamp. Residents of the capital flocked to buy the new stamps from Kyiv’s main post office. “It’s a very cool gesture for the world to understand Ukraine, that we remain in the spotlight,” a resident said.

In November last year Banksy released video footage of his artwork in Ukraine. The works feature people doing daily tasks against war-torn buildings in Hostomel, Horenka and Borodyanka. The towns in which the artwork is featured were the worst hit at the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The footage also shows a man’s hand creating the art - but in true Banksy style, his face is never shown. The video can be viewed at https://www.bbc.com/ news/av/world-europe-63686223

An Post has issued two new stamps featuring illustrations from the Book of Kells. The brightly coloured stamps show the profile of the lion, a reoccurring image in the manuscript, symbolising Christ and the resurrection. Monks of St. Columba’s order of Iona, Scotland are thought to have produced the Book of Kells, which was brought to the Abbey of Kells in County Meath in 806 AD following Viking raids on Iona.

The definitive Charles

Reported at www.abc.net.au New stamps featuring the image of King Charles III have been unveiled by the UK’s Royal Mail, the latest item to get a makeover following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. From coins and banknotes to the official royal cypher used by the government, replace8 - Stamp News

uses an adapted version of a portrait of Charles which is also appearing on new coins. “As with all stamps, the monarch approved them and so we hope that he’s happy with this design,” Royal Mail’s director of external affairs “The guidance we were given was not to try to be too clever or to try to veer off into some different direction, but very much to keep that traditional image that we’re all very much used to.” The new stamp, which will go on general sale at the start of April, consists solely of the King’s head and the stamp value on a plain-coloured background. “There is precedent for the King not wearing a crown,” Mr Gold said. Charles is the seventh monarch to appear on a definitive stamp. Existing stamps with Elizabeth’s image will remain valid and in distribution until stocks are exhausted, the Royal Mail said.

II will continue to be issued until the existing stocks are used up. The most used of the polymer notes, £5 and £10 have an expected “use life” of 5 years so again there is likely to be a mixture until sufficient Charles III versions are in circulation or the design changes. Numismatists have now spotted what they claim is a secret image in homage to the King’s promotion of environmental policies as Prince of Wales and his love of nature. Did you spot the little bird that appears to be perched on Charles’s ear?

Charles has a bird?

Reported at www.dailykos.com With the accession of King Charles, the designs on the currency and postage stamps is being changed. Portrait images of Elizabeth are being replaced with new versions showing Charles. The image on the stamps is based on the design by Martin Jennings for the coinage for the Royal Mint. The portrait first appeared on £5 and 50p (£0.50) coins commemorating the life of Queen Elizabeth last year. The inscription is unusual in Charles’s name not being shown in Latin (Carolus) however the rest , apart from Rex are abbreviations for Dei Gratia Rex, Fidei Defensor — “by the grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith”. Stamps in the News - Globally! Canada Post will issue a setenant pair of nondenominated permanent-rate (currently 92¢) Ranunculus stamps March 1 in a booklet of 10, coil of 50 and souvenir sheet of two. While blooms of the wild varieties of ranunculus tend to be yellow, cultivated varieties boast single or double blooms of orange, red, violet and various shades of pink. Many species grow naturally near streams, hence the name “Ranunculus,” which comes from the Latin words for “little frog.” The Persian buttercup variety on the stamps prefers to grow in sunny hillsides similar to its native environment of southwestern Asia, southern Europe and northern Africa. The plants are thought to have been brought to Europe at the time of the Crusades, when Christians and Muslims fought a series of religious wars in the Holy Land beginning in the late 11th century.

Reported at https://goldrushcam.com The U.S. Postal Service has issued a high-denomination stamp celebrating the mathematical symmetry of flowers. The new $10 Floral Geometry stamp complements similar $2 and $5 stamps issued in 2022. The Floral Geometry stamps began as an exploration of the patterns found in nature, specifically the symmetry of flowers. The designs feature a series of overlapping geometric shapes — circles, ovals and triangles — that reflect the symmetry of floral patterns. As the stamp denominations rise from $2 to $5 to $10, the designs become more complex. The watercolour backgrounds were painted by hand and scanned. 10 - Stamp News

Stamp of intrigue in North Korea Reported at www.sbs.com.au

North Korea has unveiled new postage stamps featuring leader Kim Jong-un’s daughter, in what experts described as another sign of her rise as heir apparent of the nuclear-armed nation. She has never been named by Pyongyang but Kim Jong-un’s daughter has made several high-profile appearances since November when the country launched its most powerful ballistic missile. The new stamp series commemorates the 18 November missile launch — five of them featuring Mr Kim and his daughter. The postal corporation described the unnamed girl as Mr Kim’s “beloved daughter” in captions describing the stamps on its website. South Korea’s spy agency believes she is Kim’s second child, called Ju Ae. Some experts say the daughter’s appearances indicate that she is being groomed as the next leader, and that the stamps further cement her place in the cult of personality surrounding the ruling Kim family. Some say it is still too early to say for sure, given that Mr Kim is still in his 30s and the daughter’s name has never been mentioned officially. “It’s still very possible that Ju Ae is just being

Vital supplies include canned food; powdered baby milk; cereals; nuts and dried fruits; toiletries; nappies and wet wipes; blankets and sleeping bags; and external batteries (power banks). Donations will be forwarded to a bpost fulfillment centre, where they will be sorted and packed up for transport to PTT in Istanbul. Stamps in the News - Globally! Indian collector’s passion Reported at www.thehindu.com

A rare collection of postage stamps treasured by Fr. Tom John from Wayanad, Kerela, India tells the sacrificial love of St. Valentine. The priest has a collection of more than 55,000 stamps on 227 themes, of which 177 stamps are on Valentine’s Day. Most of these are from the U.S., England, the Philippines, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Malaysia, Holland, Germany and Ireland and many of these depict the symbol of love or heart. Though many people across the world celebrate the day, many among them may not know about the sacrificial love of St. Valentine, says Fr. John. “The celebration of Valentine’s Day gives us a chance to experience sacrificial and committed love in our married and non-married life, especially since we are hearing about broken marriages everyday,” he said. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in memory of St. Valentine, a Catholic priest who was put to death by Roman Emperor Claudius on February 14, 269 AD for defying his order to build a large army. The emperor had, by law, cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome for a short period for the purpose, but St. Valentine secretly performed marriages. On being caught red-handed, he was put to death by the emperor. The Valentine’s Day collection of stamps with the priest includes one issued in Italy in 1988 to those issued more recently. “I had this hobby of collecting beautiful matchbox covers during my boyhood and later it developed into a penchant for stamp collection,” Fr. John said. Stamps are not just pieces of paper but a world of information, according to the 62-year-old priest. The priest, a native of Pala in Kotta14 - Stamp News

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for April 2023. This month’s column looks at Australia Post new issues, an enigmatic Queensland postal card, postal stationery in recent auctions, online Journals and forthcoming exhibitions. Macquarie Island Stamped Envelope The 75th anniversary of the Macquarie Island Research Station was commemorated by a stamped envelope (Figure 1) issued on 7 February 2023. A permanent research station was established on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island, some 1,540 kilometres south-east of Tasmania in 1948. Between 1911 and 1915, a temporary base on Macquarie Island, established by Douglas Mawson had assisted radio communication between Hobart and Antarctic expeditioners, but the new permanent station was built for meteorological and scientific purposes, a mission it continues to fulfill. Today, science on the World Heritage–listed island focuses on wildlife conservation, environmental management and atmospheric and geological processes, while the station also supports research that is carried out in the Australian Antarctic Territory. The stamp area on the envelope features the Bell of the LST3501, an RAN landing ship which carried ANARE personal and equipment to Macquarie Island to establish the base in 1948 and which was later known as HMAS Labuan, as well as a view of the ship unloading supplies. The envelope also features views of Macquarie Island during the 75-year period and the Macquarie Island Shag. It was designed by Jo Muré, Australia Post Design Studio. Prepaid Postcards Four prepaid postcards were issued on 7 February 2023 showing Sporting Treasures (Figure 20 - Stamp News

The cards feature Jack Brabham in his ‘BT23A-1 Prototype’, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Hubert Opperman and Kurt Fearnley. Sold as a set for $7.80. Fairy-Wrens were the subject of four prepaid postcards issued on 21 February 2023. The cards featured the Lovely Fairy-Wren (Figure 3), found in far north Queensland, the Red-Backed FairyWren found mainly in northern and north eastern Australia, Purple-Crowned FairyWren (Figure 4) which has a limited range in northern Australia and the Superb Blue Fairy-wren, s familiar bird of south eastern Australia. The cards were sold as a set for $7.80. Hong Kong Lunar New Year Year f the Rabbit Lettercards Hong Kong issued four lettercards, referred to as ‘postcards’ by the Hong Kong Post Office, (Figures 5-6) to mark the Year of the Rabbit on 10 January 2023. The lettercards were sold as a set of four for HK$54 and depict the rabbit the propitious Rabbit in the form of different traditional handicrafts. Queensland 1910 1d Queen Victoria Sidfae with Numerals in Four Corners Postal Card with ‘Divided Front’ The 1d Queen Victoria Sideface with Numerals in Four Corners Postal Card with a divided front (Figure 7) is something of an enigma in Queensland Postal Stationery. Collas in his handbook Queensland Postal Stationery refers to the existence of the card which is listed in Higgins and Gage as HG 19 and comments that he had Stamp News - 21

not seen a copy. The publication of the handbook led to the confirmation that the postal card did exist and a number of copies have now been recorded including one used copy. Speculation that the card may have been a 1910 view card from a sheet which did not have the views printed on the reverse are unfounded as the cards are printed on a cream stock quite unlike the bright white stock used for the 1910 view cards. The used copy (Figure 8) was used from near Warwick on 29 December 1910 and was postmarked on the S&W TPO service. The exact date of issue and the reason for issuing the card are unknown. Postcard regulations changed in 1906 so that correspondence was permitted on the left-hand side of the front of the card. The card has a dividing line between the area reserved for the address on the right side of the card under the area where the stamp was to be placed and an area that could be used for correspondence on the left side of the card with the corresponding headings of ‘CORRESPONDENCE’ and ‘ADDRESS”. The card also bears the imprint of the Queensland Government Printer, ‘A.J. CUMMING. GOVT PRINTER’ reading upwards to the right of the dividing line. The same 22 - Stamp News

Ian McMahon Figure 9 Canadian Military Airletter Used From Fiji Figure 10 Proof of Australia 1915-18 20/- Postal Note design ws used for the front of the 1910 Queensland postal cards with black and with views on the reverse. Canada Military Formular Airletter Used in Fiji Paul Xavier has provided the illustration of military formular airletters used by Canadian Forces which has been used in Fiji (Figure 9). The formular airletter is of the standard type used by British forces with 2.8 million of the British produced forms being purchased by Canada and made available to their troops. Later printings of the airletters were produced locally in Canada. The airletter was posted from Suva to Canada on 10th March 1955. The sender’s address on the reverse indicated that the airletter was posted by a sailor from HMCS Ontario. HMCS Ontario was a light cruiser which served with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1945. It made a number of trips to the Pacific including a three-month training cruise to Australia and New Zealand in early 1955, returning to Canada on 2 April during which the airletter was presumably posted.

In some cases only for members (as is the case of the Postal Stationery Collector, Journal of the Postal Stationery Society of Australia) and in other cases older issues are available publically with only the more recent issues being restricted to members. This has proved a great boon for collectors especially those engaged in philatelic research. A recent addition to the Journals available on-line is Philately From Australia, the Journal of the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria. While issues from the last six years are restricted to members, earlier issues are publically available at https://www.rpsv.org.au/ archived-journals/. This is particularly important for collectors of Australian colonial and Commonwealth postal stationery as many important research articles have been published in this Journal. Many of the articles, even though published over 30 years ago, remain relevant to the modern collector. A good example of this is Bill Walton’s articles on Queensland lettercards published in 1989 and 1990 which remain the definitive work on the Queensland

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation Over the last few months the topics discussed have focused on how to exhibit. This month the focus is for those who for may wish to take up Stamp Collecting or reconnect with the hobby. In an article from the UK March 2015, Serena Renner stated “Although the advent of email has hurt postal mail service in recent years, stamp collecting remains a passionate hobby as well as a valuable business and investment strategy in many countries. Billions of stamps have been issued since the British Penny Black, the world’s first adhesive stamp, debuted in 1840, and many are laced with romance and lore — transporting collectors to exotic destinations, critical moments in history and, for some, elusive future fortunes” “Stamp collecting – a hobby for life” Many people at some time in their lives collect stamps. Many begin collecting stamps as a child and lose interest as they grow older and the pressures of study, work and family limit their time for recreational activities. Later in life they rediscover their stamp collection and wonder what to do with it. This article is designed to give you some of the options if you find yourself in this situation. Rediscovering Stamp Collecting On rediscovering your old collection you may find yourself renewing your 40 - Stamp News

interest in stamp collecting. Stamp collecting is one of the world’s most popular hobbies, satisfying our collector instincts as well as providing an insight into the history, geography and culture of the countries whose stamps we collect. Many people also consider it therapeutic and a relief from stress. Many stamp collectors take up stamp collecting later in life. This may be triggered by discovering your old stamp collection, or by your children’s interest in collecting or because you are looking for a serious hobby. “Whatever the reason it is never too late to start stamp collecting!” Where to Begin? If you had only the most basic stamp collection when younger but are seriously interested in taking on a new challenge. Then you need some good advice from another stamp collector or stamp dealer. This brochure, and others in the series, such as Why Collect Stamps, Why Join a Stamp Club? and Where

Russell Boylan

Philatelic Development Officer, APF Do I Get Stamps for My Collection, are all a good start. If you have collected before and want to restart with your old collection, then you also need some good advice. There can be no better advice than to seek out fellow collectors. Even if you have no interest in organised philately, your local stamp club or local stamp dealer is an ideal place to get some advice on the direction to take. The advice can also save you from making costly mistakes. Collecting can simply involve buying new stamp issues from the post office and storing them in an album or stockbook. But if you want to fill gaps in your collection then you will need to find other sources of stamps such as stamp dealers and stamp clubs. The other question you will want to answer is what do I want to collect? Very few people collect all the stamps of the world, there are simply too many and it is too expensive. Many collectors specialise and only collect Australia; or stamps from the year they were born till now; or their country of origin. The ways and byways of stamp collecting are endless. For additional help you should go to the APF website and take a look at collecting brochure number six, Beyond Australia for more ideas. How Can Stamp Clubs Help? While stamp collecting can be a solitary hobby it is far more fun when done socially. The best way to take your hobby forward is to join a stamp club. The social interaction and friends you will make, tend to last a lifetime. Stamp clubs (or philatelic societies) exist in most areas. Their membership includes people from a wide range of backgrounds who are interested in stamp collecting. They provide their members with the opportunity to meet with

like-minded people and to share information about their hobby. They often offer displays, visiting speakers, newsletters or magazines and purchasing schemes for books and accessories. Importantly they provide you with an opportunity to obtain stamps at reasonable prices through their exchange books. Many clubs also organise stamp fairs and exhibitions. Stamp club members can help you with advice on all aspects of the hobby. For details of stamp clubs near you please contact the philatelic council in your state. Contact details are given at the end of this brochure or try www.apf.org.au Dealers Stamp dealers and auction houses are an important source of stamps. Developing a close relationship with a stamp dealer is one of the best ways of obtaining new material. Most dealers see a wide range of material and will assist you in obtaining the stamps you need for your collection. For information about the dealers near you please contact the Australasian Philatelic Traders’ Association (APTA) at www.apta.com.au . Australia Post If you are interested in modern Australian stamps you can purchase stamps, first day covers and other products directly from Australia Post. Most Australia Post shops carry a range of new issues. You can also order directly by mail from the Australian Philatelic Bureau www.auspost.com.au . Obtaining stamps for my collection There are many ways to obtain stamps for your collection – from the mail, the post office, dealers and clubs. Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation price. Some indication of current dealers’ selling prices can be obtained from advertisements in stamp magazines. You also need to be aware that the condition of a stamp is very important in determining its value. Damaged stamps, for example, are usually of no value unless the stamp is exceedingly rare. Look after your stamps. Stamps can be easily damaged by water, mould or insects. Do not, for example, leave your stamps in a damp garage or basement.

What Are My Options If I Don’t Wish To Keep The Collection? If you decide that you no longer have an interest in collecting, you may decide to dispose of the collection. If so then your next step should be to determine the value of the collection. Many people are aware of stamp catalogues. In valuing stamps from stamp catalogues, it needs to be remembered that a dealer needs to make a profit on a purchase and will normally only buy a stamp for a fraction of the catalogue price which is most commonly a dealers’ selling 42 - Stamp News

Valuations The best way to have the collection valued is to have a valuation done by a dealer. Most people will find that there is a local stamp dealer to whom the collection can be taken for a valuation. Members of the Australasian Philatelic Traders’ Association (APTA) agree to abide by a code of ethics and will provide you with a realistic idea of what your collection is worth. Stamp dealers are usually listed in the yellow pages but ask them whether they are members of APTA. A list of dealers can be found at www.apta.com.au It is important to remember when asking for a valuation from a stamp dealer that they may charge for their time. Most dealers are more than happy to take a quick look at a collection and let you know whether it is of little value or whether you should have it properly valued. Also, they will often waive the cost of valuation if you sell the collection to them. What next? After you have determined the value of the collection, your options for dealing with the

Russell Boylan

Philatelic Development Officer, APF collection include selling the collection; or giving the collection away. However, if the collection is of little monetary value you might consider giving the collection to a young collector or donating the collection to a junior club in your area. Disposing of the Collection If the collection has a reasonable monetary value (say over $500) you may wish to sell it. The major ways of doing this include: • direct sale to a dealer • consigning the stamps to an auction house • direct sale to a collector • sale through the exchange books of a stamp club For most people, direct sale to a dealer is the most convenient method of selling stamps. If the dealer is interested in the collection, a member of APTA will make you a fair offer for your stamps or direct you to another dealer

who may be interested. It is worthwhile obtaining at least two offers. If the collection is of significant value the best method of disposal is by auction. APTA will advise you of the names of reputable auction houses who will be able to sell your material on commission. If your collection consists mainly of lower value material it may be better to sell the material through a local stamp club. Most clubs have exchange books through which members can sell stamps on the payment of a small commission. Your local club will advise you on the details of this method of selling your stamps

Welcome to the next country in my tour of British Commonwealth stamps. There are many to choose from, and we are now up to letter N and I hope you find this choice of Nyasaland interesting. A very brief background might be useful. During the 1860s and ’70s the British established a limited presence in a part of eastern Africa that was known as the Shire Highlands and in 1889 the Shire Highland Protectorate was

formed. In 1891 this was extended to become the British Central African Protectorate, which in 1907 became Nyasaland. There are many interesting country areas to collect stamps from this part of Africa. Nyasaland, along with Northern Rhodesia and Southern Rhodesia, became the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland between 1953 and 1963. In 1964 Nyasaland gained independence and is now known as Malawi. For this article I will just focus on the stamps of Nyasaland which were issued as the Nyasaland Protectorate between 1908 and 1964 when it gained independence. In the first issue are 11 stamps, a 1s stamp issued with a watermark Crown CA then 10 with multiple Crown CA. The designs were the commonly seen British Colonies general designs, in this case showing the King Edward VII portrait. While a few of the stamps can easily be found at lower prices there are a few with some very high catalogue values, especially those with inverted watermarks, the 3d and 4d values, and the high value issues from the 2s 6d through to the £10 value. Fig 1 shows the two designs. In 1913 and then again in 1921 there were similar issues, showing the King George V portrait. These issues are more for the specialist collector. There are so many varieties that Figure 1

I think it would take a lifetime to accumulate one of each, and would certainly require a very healthy bank balance! It was not until 1934 that the first Nyasaland issue appeared. This showed the national symbol of the leopard (Fig 2) in an issue of 9 stamps showing the portrait of King George V. A rather nice issue in my view and relatively easily to include in a collection. In 1938 there was a similar issue, but this time with the portrait of King George VI. (Fig 3) Not a surprise to you, if you have been reading previous articles, is the next significant issue which was released in 1945. It presented the image of

King George VI on stamps with various cultural designs. Again a lovely issue and also relatively easy to add to a collection, and with no watermark or flaw varieties to complicate matters that I am aware of. (Fig 4) One of my favourite stamps from Nyasaland is this 1947 issue showing the symbol of the Protectorate, the leopard, but in a more natural wildlife setting. (Fig 5) After the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

self-government. I have chosen these three for you to enjoy. A very different design style as you can see in Fig 6. There were of course the various omnibus issues including the 1935 Silver Jubilee, the 1937 Coronation, the 1948 Royal Silver Wedding and others you are well familiar with, I am sure. I hope you have enjoyed seeing these definitive issues. I welcome comments at cddstamps@ gmail.com Until the next time. Enjoy your philately Michael cddstamps.com

This Glossopteris vegetation concentration was responsible for peninsular India’s coal reserves. Figure 13 is from Zambia in central Africa, where the zone extends to the northern coast of Namibia. Glossopteris Fossil sites are also found in Australia and Argentina.

Conclusions Though facing death, Scott’s party of polar explorers considered the Glossopteris fossil specimens too important to discard. Jettisoning the samples would have lightened their load and helped them survive. Despite losing the race to be the first to plant the flag at the South Pole, the other objective of the expedition was to collect scientific information. Besides the fossils, a meteorological log, scores of notes, and rolls of film were recovered in the tent beside their frozen bodies. The scientific significance of discovering the Glossopteris fossils in Antarctica is that it supported Alfred Wegener’s Theory of Continental Drift, which transformed the science of Geology. NZ Post : Forest & Bird Te Reo o te Taiao For a century Forest & Bird has worked with supporters, members, communities and government to protect and restore Aotearoa New Zealand’s environment and native species. Funded solely by memberships, donations and bequests, the organisation is a singular voice for nature. Featuring paintings by New Zealand artist Rachel Walker, these stamps have been created to celebrate Forest & Bird’s 100th birthday in 2023. The stamps represent the organisation’s heritage (whakapapa) by depicting landscapes and species of significance to the society’s supporters. Falklands Is. : The Discovery of Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance It took ten years and two expeditions, but on 5 March 2022, under the auspices of the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance was finally found. The discovery made headlines around the world. The so-called ‘unreachable’ wreck was located beneath the ice of the Weddell Sea at a depth of 3008 metres. Shackleton called it ‘the worst portion of the worst sea on earth.’ It was the greatest wreck hunt ever. The first expedition in 2019 used Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, or AUVs, to survey the seabed. The icebreaker they chartered was the 12,900 ton S.A. Agulhas II out of Cape Town. The search ended when ice conditions deteriorated and the AUV disappeared without trace. The quest resumed in 2022, using the same ship. This time they succeeded. The main search vehicle was a ‘Sabertooth’, an unmanned submersible made by Saab of Sweden. Its main advantage was that it was linked to the surface by up to 6 km of fibre optic cable which allowed the subsea team to know precisely where it was throughout the dive and to be able to follow the in-coming data stream in real time. The wreck was discovered upright, semi-intact and in an excellent state of preservation. Even its paintwork was still visible. Her masts were down, and her deck house and most of the quarterdeck had been destroyed by the ice, but the well deck at the stern was untouched. The ship’s wheel was in position and largely unscathed as was the binnacle, or wooden stand in front of the wheel which held the vessel’s magnetic compass. Most remarkable was the fact that the Endurance had been found exactly 100 years to the day after Shackleton had been buried at South Georgia. For those who saw the wreck through the Sabertooth’s cameras, the most moving sight was undoubtedly Shackleton’s cabin and the ship’s name that arced across the stern over the emblem of the North Star, or Polaris, after which the ship had originally been named. The Polaris was built at Sandefjord, Norway, in 1911-1913. In 1914 she was bought by Sir Ernest Shackleton who renamed her Endurance after his family motto ‘by endurance we conquer.’ His purpose in acquiring the ship was to use her to carry his team to Antarctica where it was his intention to cross the continent from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea by way of the Pole. But it was not to be. On 18 January 1915, without having reached their desti-

nation of Vahsel Bay, the Endurance became icebound. For ten months she was carried northwards by the pack until, on 21 November 1915, ruptured and leaking she was released by the ice and plunged to the seabed. For over five months Shackleton and his team of 27 survived on the ice. On 9 April, 1916, they took to their three boats and, after six days of the most brutal conditions imaginable, they made Elephant Island. Shackleton realized that if they stayed on ‘that hellish rock’ they would most likely perish. So he took his best boat, the 22 foot long James Caird and five of his men (Frank Worsley, Tom Crean, ‘Chippy’ McNish, John Vincent and Timothy McCarthy) and departed for South Georgia to seek help. It took over two weeks to reach their destination where, after nine days of recuperation, Shackleton, Worsley and Crean set off over the Island’s mountainous spine for the whaling stations on the other side. 36 hours later they turned up at Stromness where they were greeted with disbelief and astonishment by the small community of Norwegian whalers. After a failed attempt to reach the 22 men on Elephant Island with a small whaling steamer, they set out for the Falklands. This was the first of Shackleton’s three visits to the Islands. Further attempts were made to relieve the party but it was not until 30 August 1916, that Shackleton finally got through and rescued them all using a Chilean naval tug, the Yelcho, under the command of Lt. Luis Pardo. They all survived. It was a story of extraordinary leadership, courage and determination. Some have called it the greatest escape – ever.

PARAGUAY’s Locally Inspired STAMPS The landlocked South American nation of Paraguay is seldom in the news and very possibly not one of the more popular countries in philatelic circles despite or perhaps rather because of its huge production of pictorial stamps. Paraguay has a most interesting history with the Jesuits playing an important role until they were expelled in 1767. Following independence from Spain in 1811, a number of colourful but authoritarian presidents led their country in a number of devastating wars. The last one – the Chaco War – lasted from 1932 until 1935. It opposed Paraguay with Bolivia in a conflict involving the Chaco region which was believed to be rich in oil. Paraguay still has a very large native population known as the Guaraní people. Guaraní along with Spanish are the two official languages. Paraguay’s national currency is also the guaraní. Paraguay issued its very first postage stamps in 1870. New issues were fairly limited until the end of the 1950s when Paraguay slowly embarked on a road of large numbers of gaudy pictorials with mostly irrelevant designs of absolutely no relation to Paraguay. These pictorial stamps were mostly printed by De La Rue in Colombia and later by Lito Nacional in Portugal. Usually each set had a number of very low values for ordinary postage and then a few higher values for

Figure 1

airmail postage. It is fairly obvious that all these pictorial stamps were produced for worldwide collectors and not for postal customers in Paraguay. But at irregular intervals there were also several sets of stamps with a strong local connection. They were sometimes printed locally in Paraguay and also by the Chilean Mint (Casa de Moneda) in Santiago de Chile. The stamps designed and printed in Santiago closely resemble contemporary Chilean issues using the same design and printing methods. My own Paraguay collection mostly comprises a selection of the locally inspired stamps with a particular stress in the issues printed in Chile. However my first illustration in this story is a single 12.45 G. stamp issued on 24 October 1959 featuring a map of Paraguay and the UN emblem. It was actually issued to mark the United Nations Day and the Talleres de Valores Fiscales in Asunción printed 100,000 copies of the stamp (Fig. 1). In 1945 Paraguay was a founding member of the United Nations. The Jesuits played a major role in the early years of the Spanish domination of what is today Paraguay. They were in fact effectively running the country until their expulsion in 1767. Ignacio de Loyola (1491-1556) was the founder of the Jesuit Order which is still a most active part of

Figure 3

Christer Brunström the Catholic Church. There were five stamps in the set featuring a wooden statue of Saint Ignacio, the portraits of Roque González and Ignacio de Loyola and the first monastery erected by the Jesuits in San Ignacio Guazu (Fig. 2). The set was issued on 15 March 1958 marking the 400th anniversary of the saint’s death. This was a rather belated tribute as the saint died in 1556. This set was produced by Imprenta Nacional in Asunción. Alfredo Stroessner (1912-2006) became Paraguay’s president in 1954 and he soon turned into what can be best described as a dictator. He was finally overturned in 1989 and sent into exile in nearby Brazil. Despite Stroessner’s undemocratic and authoritarian way of running the country, a number of prominent world leaders made official visits to Paraguay including Prince Philip in 1962. On 6 October 1966 no less than six stamps marked the state visit of French President Charles de Gaulle. Three of the stamps feature portraits of Stroessner and the French President (Fig. 3). Paraguay is a landlocked country but it still maintains a fleet of merchant ships as the Paraguay and Paraná Rivers are navigable from the Atlantic all the way to Asunción and other ports. On 31 July 1962 a set of seven stamps was released showing vessels (Fig. 5) and a ship’s wheel. These stamps were designed and

Figure 4

printed by the Casa de Moneda in Chile. On 16 August 1961 Paraguay released seven stamps devoted to local wildlife. The four values for regular post show a puma (Puma concolor) (Fig. 5) and the three airmails a South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris). Paraguay has a rich flora which varies between the different regions. On 28 July 1965 a set of eight stamps was issued featuring an orchid (Cattleya warscewiczii) on the five values for ordinary mail (Fig. 6) and a Ceibo tree (Ceiba pentandra) on the three airmail values. This and many of the other local issues were part of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of independence in 1811. There were nine sets issued between 1961 and 1965 and all were designed and printed in Chile. In this short review of Paraguay’s locally inspired stamps I have only been able to feature a very limited selection but there are many more highly collectable issues which tell us a lot about this country which very seldom is in the limelight. The good news is that all these stamp sets with local designs are very inexpensive and it should be possible to assemble a nice representative collection or exhibit at little cost.
