An army of volunteers has reopened a post office in a NSW Snowy Mountains town after more than a year without any postal services. Dalgety’s Australia Post LPO closed in December 2021, citing pressures from the pandemic. Since then, the 250 locals have had to drive 40 minutes north to Cooma to pick up their mail and access postal services. The Dalgety District Community Association president has been campaigning for the post office to reopen its doors ever since. “It hasn’t been easy for anybody,” she said. Reopening as a community postal agency, the service will be subsidised by Australia Post but can only operate if it is run by volunteers. “The money that we get from doing this service will be going back into community projects.” The new postal service will be run by the Dalgety District Community Association, with

locals able to pick up mail and parcels from the Dalgety Showground during opening hours of 11am to 2pm on Saturdays, and 4pm to 6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. Australia Post thanked the community for its patience while the new agency was established and acknowledged the new operators for “providing the important service to the community”. Interestingly, Dalgety almost became Australia’s capital city. In 1903 a Federal Royal Commission named Dalgety as the location for Australia’s national capital but NSW complaints about it being too close to Melbourne led to Canberra being voted as more appropriate.
Dirty deed by Australia Post

At stake was an important document lost in the mail - the deed to the Geelong home of Colin Chapman and his wife. When the couple paid off their mortgage last year, Chapman said he asked the Commonwealth Bank if he could personally collect the certificate of title but they insisted that it

be sent via registered post. Chapman says he was following the tracking information closely on the day the deed was due to arrive at their home and checking the tracking number, saw it had been delivered. “I called my wife, who was at home, and asked her if she had received it. She told me nothing had come,” he said. Puzzled, Chapman said he immediately went down to the local post office to ask what had happened. That’s when things grew even more strange. Chapman said he was shown a copy of the delivery signature supposedly signed by his wife at 8.30am that morning. “I looked at it and said, ‘That’s not my wife’s signature’,” Chapman said. What followed, Chapman said, was five frustrating and stressful weeks dealing with Australia Post’s customer service department. “It took them three-and-a-half weeks just to get them to admit it was lost in transit. “They kept trying to say that it was delivered, that my wife had signed for it. “Well, my wife didn’t sign for it - but the question is, who did?” I reckon I sent about 60 to 70 emails and
spent 100 hours of my time to get an answer out of them.” Australia Post eventually acknowledged Chapman’s delivery had been lost, but there was still the problem of the missing deed. All up, Chapman estimated he spent about $2500 on legal fees to get a digital certificate of title issued, which he finally received in January. The deed lost in the mail was a paper version. Chapman said Australia Post had offered just $100 in compensation - but added his dissatisfaction was not just about the money he had lost. “Australia Post need to be held accountable for all of the stress they have caused us. They have pushed us pillar to post and it seems like all they are concerned with is protecting their brand.”

dral’s treasures. On April 15, 2019, a fire destroyed the cathedral’s spire and most of the roof. France’s President Emmanuel Macron immediately promised that the cathedral would be rebuilt in five years, in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The new series, called Treasures of Notre Dame, began April 15 2020. The series aims to highlight the treasures, riches and heritage of the 12th-century cathedral during the reconstruction period. The first issue, an engraved black-and-white souvenir sheet, depicted a drawing of part of the cathedral’s facade with many of its famed gargoyles pictured. The Greek letter phi can be seen in the window in the lower left corner of the design of the €1.40 stamp. In recent years La Poste has used this symbol to indicate its commemorative stamps. The latest addition to the series was issued in April and depicts the cathedral bells. From the 12th century, before the end of the construction of the cathedral, mention is made 8 - Stamp News
of the ringing of the bells. This ringing grew over the centuries, each bell being remelted one or more times per century. The bell tower had twenty bells in 1769, divided between the towers and the spire but the Revolution did not spare the bells which were broken and melted down in 1791. Only the bell Emmanuel was spared and replaced in its tower in 1802. With a diameter of 2.62 meters, weighing thirteen tons, it was the largest bell in France until 1891. In 2013, eight new bells were installed to rediscover the soundscape of the 18th century. Until the fire of 2019, these bells punctuated the daily and extraordinary times of Parisian life.

These architectural gems, much loved by residents and tourists alike, are public spaces where you can find shops and sometimes even homes. The star of the special issue is Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert (in Brussels city centre), whose picture window is the main illustration on the sheetlet. In addition to Saint-Hubert, Brussels is also

represented by the Passage du Nord. In 1881, the many attractions of this lighted shopping arcade included 32 caryatides: stone carvings of female figures. Also on the limited-edition sheet is the Passage de la Bourse in Charleroi – one of the jewels in the crown of Walloon architecture designed by Belgian architect Edmond Legraive. The second Walloon arcade is the passage Lemonnier in Liège – the “grande dame” of Belgian arcades. It was built between 1836 and 1838 by architect Louis-Désiré Lemonnier. On the Flemish side, the Stadsfeestzaal in Antwerp is iconic with impressive gilding and decorative moulding adorning the interior walls. Last but not least, the James Ensor gallery in the Glazenstraat in Ostend is a smaller architec-
tural gem that was renovated in 2016.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport have seized 4,080 counterfeit U.S. postage stamps. The fraudulent stamps were discovered after officers inspected packages that were manifested as “hand account/self-adhesive sheets.” Overall, officers discovered poor print-quality counterfeit U.S. postage stamps in 12 shipments arriving from China. counterfeit U.S. postage stamps via e-commerce and social media platforms in recent months places consumers’ packages at great risk. “The U.S. Postal Inspection Service offers this sage advice, ‘if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,’” said the Inspector in
Charge of the Fort Worth Division. “Counterfeit postage scams are harmful both to the U.S. Postal Service for a loss of revenue and to customers when their mailed item is either delayed and returned for payment, or potentially disposed of.” “ It’s not a petty crime: forging or possession of counterfeit postage is a violation of federal law and can result in up to five years imprisonment.” This surge in counterfeit postage has USPS seeking to change current mail standards. Under the revision, articles with counterfeit stamps will be considered abandoned and disposed of at the Postal Service’s discretion.

Candidates canvassing in Hangleton and Knoll sent out campaign leaflets to houses but residents were given slips from Royal Mail asking them to pick up letters and pay £2.50 in postage. On collecting the leaflets from the Royal Mail, rather than packages or letters from loved ones the post only contained campaign literature for the local elections. One resident who received the letter said: “I asked staff at Royal Mail why I was paying for the letter and she said it had a counterfeit stamp on it. A Labour spokesman confirmed that campaigners had bought stamps online and that while the stamps were being flagged as counterfeit, the error is believed to have been caused by a faulty barcode. The party has also offered refunds to anyone who has paid the £2.50 charge for the leaflets. A Labour spokesman said: “Labour would never knowingly use counterfeit stamps for the posting of its literature to residents.” “Discussions with the retailer have revealed problems with the new bar-coded stamps the Royal Mail has introduced. We have therefore
demanded an investigation by Royal Mail so incidents like this will never happen again to anyone.”

In celebration of World Art Day on April 15, the United Nations Postal Administration will issue six stamps in panes of 12. The designs feature artwork from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) art collection, each being commissioned by the body. “World Art Day celebrations help reinforce the links between artistic creations and society, encourage greater awareness of the diversity of artistic expressions and the contribution of artists to sustainable development,” a spokesman said. The 63¢ stamp for the post office at U.N. headquarters in New York City depicts Henry Moore’s sculpture Reclining Figure, and the $1.45 stamp shows a wool tapestry by Le Corbusier. The U.S. Postal Service will honour American artist Roy Lichtenstein with five commemorative Forever stamps featuring his colourful pop art. Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), the iconic American artist of the pop art movement, stunned the art world in 1961 with his large paintings starring cartoon characters and a range of consumer products, among other unlikely subjects. Some art connoisseurs found them outrageous, but others saw great meaning in them. Lichtenstein’s career quickly took off. Pop art, which arose in the late 1950s and reached its height in the 1960s, looked to popular culture for its aesthetic. It often was seen as poking fun at consumerism. With their trademark heavy black outlining, intense colours, dot patterns simulating fourcolor mechanical printing and machine-made quality, Lichtenstein’s paintings are instantly recognisable. 12 - Stamp News
The many honours Lichtenstein received over the course of his career include induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1979 and the National Medal of Arts in 1995. His work is found in prestigious museums and galleries around the world.

Motivgruppe Musik, the International Philatelic Music Study Group, has opened online voting in its poll to determine the most popular music stamp of 2022. The study group reports that members selected 69 stamps issued in 2022 as candidates eligible for the title of the year’s most popular music stamp. The designer of the most popular music stamp will receive the Yehudi Menuhin trophy awarded in memory of Menuhin (1916-99), the violinist and conductor who was the patron of the Philatelic Music Circle from 1969 until his death. To vote in the poll, visit the group’s website. The deadline for voting is July 31. Participants will be included in a raffle to receive a philatelic gift. Founded in 1959, Motivgruppe Musik has conducted an annual poll to determine the most popular music stamp of the year since 1980. The study group has approximately 300 members in 35 countries. The French Postal service is ranked as the fourth best in the world, according to the 2021 report issued by the Universal Postal Union. The Libyan delegation held meetings and conducted several field tours to operations centres
and models of post offices in France. The latest postal technologies used were reviewed, and the most important services provided in the field by French Post were discussed. Libya Post Company hopes to benefit from ongoing development cooperation and support.

Reported at www.parcelandpostaltechnologyinternational.com Omniva, the national postal service of Estonia, and Ukraine’s national postal service, Ukrposhta, have renewed their partnership agreement to strengthen and grow cooperation. The agreement was signed during a meeting in Kyiv to discuss their previous long-term partnership and further activities and possibilities. According to Omniva, it is the first postal operator whose representatives visited Ukrposhta in Kyiv since the beginning of Russia’s fullscale invasion in February 2022. CMA CGM took over last-mile logistics player Colis Privé last year, one of a host of acquisitions it has made recently. CMA CGM is the world’s 3rd largest container shipping company, using 257 shipping routes between 420 ports in 160 countries. Based in Marseille, the company is owned by the Shade family, who originally hail from Lebanon.

philatelic news Abacus Auctions Sale 250 Results Abacus Auctions most recent sale, the 250th prepared by industry veteran Gary Watson, offered more than 2800 lots across stamps and postal history, coins and banknotes, general collectables and sporting memorabilia. All sections did well, with 77% of lots sold, for a result of over A$1,350,000 inclusive of Buyer’s Premium (all results below include the 20% BP). China’s famous 1980 ‘Year of the Monkey’ stamp is a staple of most major auctions around the world. However, Abacus had something truly remarkable: a block of 4 on a 1980 airmail postcard to Queensland. Estimated at $3000, this modern rarity sold for $6600 (Lot 1704). As always, Australian stamps featured numerous rare and desirable items, notably the 1942 1½d Queen Mother with Inverted Watermark (only the second recorded example) that went for $13,800 (Lot 258) and a group of 29 stamp-size photographic essays for the 1978 Horse Racing issue that attracted fierce bidding, selling for nine-times the $1000 estimate (Lot 279). A vendor in Canada consigned by far the most extensive array of First Day Covers to appear on the market for many years. Offered in more than 150 lots by issue or publisher, numerous new benchmarks were set. The extensive postal history offerings featured many outstanding pieces including two parcel tags, the first with complete set of CofA Watermark high value Kangaroos that was competed to $7800 (Lot

Lot 1704 $6600 601), and the other from 1983 to Holland with a block of 4 of the Paintings $10 Coming Home stamp that raced to $1380 (Lot 702). The Australian Colonies provided another strong offering, ranging from superb Classics to major varieties and important covers. A surprise was the robust bidding for a group of watermark errors from Victoria. Revenues were well represented, with a range of early NSW Beer Duty stamps, mostly with serious defects, all going to new homes. A complete set of Tax Instalment stamps from Western Australia topped-out at $2280 (Lot 1259). Abacus had advertised that their sale would include “tens of thousands of picture postcards”, and it certainly did. Offered mostly in collections but with some rare singles and sets included, both the Australia and World sections attracted spirited bidding. Further major postcard holdings are promised for later this year. British Africa was a standout section featuring a fine collection of stamps, revenues and postmarks from a local collector. Boer War selections out of NSW and South Africa attracted plenty of interest and the Southern Rhodesia collection of postmarks formed by the late Paul Peggie sold for more than four times estimate. The iconic £100 cherry-red from Rhodesia was ‘only’ a printer’s sample but sold for $9000 (Lot 1607). Other British Commonwealth areas featured an ar-

Lot 702 $1380 ray of ‘SPECIMEN’ stamps from various government archives. This attractive material is generally underrated in the market, and it was pleasing to see plenty of support on this occasion. Unfortunately, the same could not be said of the very fine collection of Nepal consigned by Melbourne philatelist Julie Marshall. Although around a third of the lots did find new homes, interest in this technically fascinating material did not live up to expectations. What remains presents a terrific opportunity for someone looking for a new area that will keep the grey matter active but won’t break the bank. Coins & Banknotes were in great demand, with more than 90% of the lots in this section selling. Along with high prices for collections & accumulation lots, the iconic Australia 1930 Penny in the relatively low grade of aVF still made a solid $21,600 (Lot 3058). Sporting Memorabilia & Collectables were equally popular, where Doug Walters’ ‘Baggy Green’ cap fetched $13,800 (Lot 3537). The cricket & football cards continued their recent strong runs, a standout example being the 1921-28 Suburban Premium Issues football group of 53 in rather mixed condition
that leapt ten-fold from a $400 estimate to finish up at $4,320 (Lot 3622). Abacus Auctions’ director Torsten Weller said the overall results were very pleasing: “The upturn in collecting that occurred during the covid lockdowns is being maintained. The market remains buoyant, and our major challenge is to find enough interesting material to meet the local and international demand”. Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for May 2023. This month’s column looks at a new section on envelopes of The New South Wales Postal Stationery Catalogue and Handbook. The New South Wales Postal Stationery Catalogue and Handbook for Envelopes Dingle Smith and Michael Blinman report that the envelope sections of the catalogue and handbook for New South Wales are now on the Postal Stationery Society of Australia’s (PSSA’s) web site, https:// postalstationeryaustralia. com/postal-stationeryof-new-south-waleshandbook/. The production of stamped envelopes for New South Wales was first proposed in 1855 and dies etc were ordered from London. Victoria first produced postal stationery envelopes in 1869 and for issues in 1870, Stieg (2001) lists 46 different tresse including many of those used in New South Wales. The widespread use of tresse, which were a purely decorative item, on commercially available envelopes seems to have ceased in the early 1880s.

The early envelopes for the 1d 1870 issue are distinguished by an embossed seal on the flap (Figure 12). These are known as `tresse’ and it is clear that at this time the Government Printer purchased blank envelopes from wholesale stationers. Such envelopes with adhesive stamps added were also used by the public. Some 14 different tresse are known on New
For this early period, it is clear that the New South Wales printer did not manufacture envelopes. It is recorded however, that the Government Printer had machinery for printing envelopes but the degree to which this was used remains unknown. The situation becomes more complex when in September 1881 the Post Office offered a stamped to order (hereafter `STO’) service. This term is now used in preference to the `printed to private order (PTPO)’. The service was modelled on that used in Victoria which commenced in 1869. `STO’ is particularly appropriate as the Government Printer’s role in New South Wales was strictly limited throughout to adding the stamp impression to envelopes or other postal stationery items submitted by business clients who placed orders with the Post Office. The material was then passed to the Government Printer who added the appropriate stamp Stamp News - 21

All other printing such as addresses, advertising, illustrations and the like were undertaken elsewhere. The study had available the detailed archival Printing Office records for the period up to early 1896 assembled by the late John Bell, much of it not previously published. These show that about half of the early printings of 40,000 1d envelopes available in January 1870 were still in stock in December 1879. There was a marked increase in the use of 1d envelopes when the 2d envelopes were issued in September 1881 likely linked to the introduction of the first New South Wales STO facility at that time. Details are given in the Handbook, for the year 1889 the Post Office issued 502,185 1d envelopes and 94,700 2d envelopes. The problem is how to 22 - Stamp News

This is especially difficult when the submitted STO envelopes are devoid of return addresses, advertising, illustrations and the like. Another approach to is to suggest that envelopes sent to the UPU as `specimens’ represent items sold to the public, they would not have included STO material. New South Wales formally became a UPU member in 1891 but is known to have supplied material to the UPU before that date. There is no record of ½d envelopes being sent to the UPU sent to the UPU and not all stamps sent to the UPU had specimen overprints! Details of the printing of specimen stamps on envelopes are given in the Handbook. All earlier accounts struggle to convincingly address the question of which envelopes were post
office issues and which were STO and this is equally true of this account. Collector interest has also changed over the years. Basset Hull (1911) commented that `…it would be hopeless to attempt to describe all varieties of these [NSW] impressed to order envelopes, and as interest is such stationery is of the slightest, any further reference to them may well be omitted’. The current situation is that of growing interest in the STO envelopes of New South Wales and of the other Australian States. These envelopes some with eye-catching coloured illustrations have become popular and are attracting high prices. The catalogue section of the current study includes a list describing the sizes and shapes and, where known, users of a range of STO covers. This is far from complete and STO envelopes will, it is thought, continue to attract collector interest. Stamp News - 23
Postal Stationery Other aspects of STO envelopes that have in recent years attracted interest include envelopes submitted for STO production, but which were incorrectly stamped by the Printing Office. It is perhaps surprising that envelopes impressed with stamps that corresponded to the overseas rates were never produced. It was permitted to make up the envelopes to the overseas rate by adding adhesive postage stamps. However, the use of postal stationery envelopes to overseas destinations appears to have been limited. The handbook describes the printing of packs of 25 envelopes for both the 1d and 2d values, these were provided complete with wrapper bands (Figure 19) by the printer and are separately listed in the printing records. Separate bands were used for supplying 25 1d envelopes at 2/1d or at 2/3d, and for the 25 2d envelopes at 4/4d or 4/6d. The differences in the price may reflect supplies to post offices or to authorised stamp
vendors. Other envelopes printed at the same time were charged at the face value of the stamps. The survival rate of the wrapper bands is exceedingly small! At the time of writing the catalogue section on envelopes does not include prices. Pricing is currently being undertaken and will be included on the website in the near future. Assembling and organising the handbook and catalogue for the New South Wales envelopes was a much more difficult task than for any of the other classes of postal stationery. As described, this is linked to the complications arising from the prolific use of STO material for much of the period. The Handbook does not fully answer these problems but additional background information is presented, in many cases for the first time. The authors hope that this may provide a starting point for others to continue the task. The advantages of using the PSAA web site to present the handbook and catalogue are several. The alternative of publishing the material in colour in hard cover book format would be extremely expensive and there are limits on the number of illustrations that can be included. The other advantage is that it is relatively easy to update the material on the web as new information comes to light or to update the catalogue prices. The authors and editor of the PSC would welcome comments, corrections and additions to the text. So please enjoy the study and we would encourage enthusiasts to take on the task of improving the story line. Lastly, publishing on the web mean that the information comes free of charge! This Handbook is now nearing completion and has been a mammoth task undertaken by Michael Blinman, Dingle Smith and Peter Kowald. Price $449 (COCT1) 167. United States Forces in New Guinea, 1943 – 45. 15 covers & 1 front, most bear Australia 3d Brown KGVI postmarked Townsville Qld, but emanating from New Guinea. Most have boxed US Army Examiner censor marking, and with name & number of servicemen. Included are 2 x American Red Cross covers. Deployments include Milne Bay, Port Moresby, Admiralty Is., Goodenough Is., Finschhafen, Nadzab, Oro Bay, Dreyer Harbour & Dobodura. The Battle of Finschhafen was part of the Huon Peninsula campaign during World War II and was fought between Australian and Japanese forces. The fighting took place between 22 September and 24 October 1943 following the landing at Scarlet Beach, which was followed by a two-pronged advance on Finschhafen as the Australian 20th Infantry Brigade advanced on the town from the north, while the 22nd Infantry Battalion drove from the south, having advanced from the landing beaches east of Lae. After the capture of Finschhafen, the Japanese forces in the area withdrew towards Sattelberg where they sought to hold the Australians before launching a counteroffensive, which subsequently threatened the landing beach. This attack was repelled by American and Australian forces, with heavy casualties being inflicted on the Japanese. In the aftermath, the Australians went on the offensive, capturing Sattelberg, and then advancing towards the Wareo plateau. GB 1883 10/- Blue QV Superb U, SG Cat $1,550 - $A499! - These stamps were used
on the very heaviest parcels - 10/- back 140 years back, was $100s cost in today’s money. A week’s wages. Most were used to Australia as that was the highest mail zone rating. Being licked onto heavy parcels for 10,000 miles by sea, they got banged around, and scuffed, and easily torn, thinned, creased, and indented. AND the UK Parcel Post cancellers in this era were generally the very heavy bootheel ‘Killers’ - totally obliterating the design most often. And being a pale blue colour, all scuffs and transit marks show readily. Absolutely lovely colour - these often fade badly, due to the security ink used. Deceased owner had a receipt for a lot of money as ‘Cobalt’ (Cat £8,250) but I do not really agree. If it is, you are the winner! Clean and flat and fresh and attractive, excellent perfs and centering for these, as you can see, very light cancel too for hi-vals, and totally free of the usual hinges, thins, creases, and typical gook and gunk and ageing etc, near always seen on these, after 140 years. Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation This month we open the Editorial with a Press Release from the Organising Committee for the Melbourne 2024 Exhibition: “We regret to advise that due to significant competing priorities as well as the move of the support office and archives, Australia Post is unable to support the Melbourne 2024 exhibition in 2024. The exhibition will need to be postponed to the later part of 2025 and the new date will not be able to be confirmed until late 2023 or early 2024 when the Melbourne Racing Club has confirmed its racing calendar.” Readers are advised to check the APF website for Updates and details of proposed products. Following from last month looking at where to begin with stamp collecting, this month we continue along that line with providing some guidelines to assist in determining just what areas or subjects you might like to focus on. Whether you choose to collect mint or used stamps or a particular country, period or theme:“Stamp collecting offers a world of interest” Most Australian stamp collectors start by collecting Australian stamps as they are more readily available than those of other countries whether in the mail, from dealers or from Australia Post. As they develop their interest in stamp collecting they often consider broadening their collecting interests. The really exciting part of stamp collecting and philately in general is that YOU decide what you will collect. There are no rules or requirements that impact upon this fascinating hobby. This article provides an overview of some of the many highways and byways of stamp collecting. The great part of stamp collecting is that you can be as general or as specialised as you want with your collection. While most Australians start by collecting Australia, many develop other collections that 40 - Stamp News
may be sparked by a variety of factors. Many collectors find that philately is so fascinating that they have many collections which tend to be only limited by their finances. If you wish to spread your interests beyond Australia and even beyond stamps then the following ideas may help you decide which areas to investigate. What country should I collect? Collectors often develop an interest other than Australia through receiving stamps from relatives and friends overseas, as a result of visiting other countries, by perusing world catalogues or from discussions with other members of a stamp club. Sometimes people begin collecting a far away country as a substitute for visiting it. Whatever country or area you decide to collect it pays to be pragmatic about what is involved. A little bit of research with a catalogue or in your local stamp club’s library will show you what is involved. Some countries have a lot of quite expensive stamps that you may never be able to afford. To some this is no concern, but others decide to find a country to collect where they can get a satisfying degree of completeness. Others collect an area which is challenging but not necessarily expensive because the fun is in the chase. Staying with Australia Many collectors decide that they wish to continue collecting Australian stamps. But the question remains – is there more to collecting than just buying new issues or collecting one of each stamp? The answer to this question is very definitely – YES. Stamp collecting has many avenues besides basic collecting. While continuing to collect Australia, collectors can choose to specialise in many different ways including booklets, postal history, postal stationery, postmarks, revenue

Philatelic Development Officer, APF stamps or detailed studies of particular issues. The scope is unlimited and Australia offers many satisfying challenges. Another possibility is collecting the stamps of the Australian states. Each Australian state issued its own stamps before Federation, and for many years afterwards before the first Commonwealth stamps were issued in 1913. Specialised Collecting Many collectors choose to study one issue or a group of issues of stamps in great detail. For example, many collectors of Australian stamps have chosen to form detailed collections of the early issues of the Australian Commonwealth, the Kangaroo and Map stamps and the King George V sideface stamps. Other collectors prefer to study modern issues in more detail including, for example, the peel and stick stamps currently issued by Australia Post. Australia Post is a pioneer in these stamps and they offer much scope for relatively low cost specialisation. There is great variety in these stamps with many different printings and with the stamps being sold in booklet and roll formats. Specialised information on Australian stamps is available through a wide range of specialised
publications. Your local stamp club or dealer is the best place to start for information. Postal History and Postmark Collecting Postal History includes the collecting of envelopes (often but not always with stamps attached) which demonstrate postage rates, mail routes, usage of stamps, and postmarks. A popular area for postal historians is to collect the postal history of the area where you were born. Collectors in this field often have a detailed knowledge of the operation and history of the postal system as well as knowledge of the social history of the period they collect. If you are interested in the past then this can be a fascinating area of specialisation. Postal Stationery Postal Stationery is stationery issued by the postal authorities which has an impressed stamp indicating the prepayment of a postal service. Usually the imprinted stamp will indicate the value of the postage paid although many modern issues just have an indication that postage has been paid. The most familiar are stamped envelopes, aerogrammes, stamped postcards, letter cards, and newspaper wrappers. Postal stationery is an increasingly popular collecting field in Australia and this is helped by the many items of postal stationery issued by Australia Post. Revenue and Railway Stamps Many collectors collect stamps issued by Governments for the purposes of collecting stamp duty or for the prepayment of parcels carried by the railways. stamps predate the issue of postage stamps by over a century. This is a vast field which is ripe for new discoveries and if you like a challenge can be most satisfying. Cinderellas Cinderellas are labels which look like stamps but which were not issued by the post office or by governments for either postal or stamp duty purposes. The variety of such labels is endless and can include publicity labels, labels for ‘private posts’, charity labels, airmail stickers and registration labels. Aerophilately There is something very romantic about collecting stamps and covers associated with the development of air mail services. Names such as Charles Lindbergh, Charles Kingsford Smith and Amelia Earhart all conjure up images of a pioneering age. To hold in your hands an envelope signed and carried by one of these aviators can be quite a thrill. This is why aerophilately has always 42 - Stamp News
Topical or Thematic Collecting Thematics involves collecting along a theme, with birds the most popular thematic among stamp collectors. Thematics involves not just collecting stamps but also postal stationery, covers, booklets and other stamp material that is part of your theme or story. At the highest level thematics involves telling a story using the philatelic material in your collection. This can be quite challenging but is also a lot of fun and need not be expensive. I’ve Decided – What Now? Once you have decided on a new collecting interest the best thing you can do is research your area of interest. This is best done by getting g advice from fellow collectors through your local stamp club or your local stamp dealer. Stamp Clubs Stamp clubs (or philatelic societies) exist in most areas and provide their members with the opportunity to meet with like-minded people and to share information about their hobby. They often offer displays, visiting speakers, newsletters or

Importantly they provide you with an opportunity to obtain stamps at reasonable prices through their exchange books. Many clubs also organise stamp fairs and exhibitions. Specialised Clubs In addition to local stamp clubs there are many specialised groups which can help you enjoy your new collecting interests. Beginners please!
Hello and welcome to the next country in my tour of British Commonwealth stamps. I am taking a slightly different view here because if I am pedantic Orange Free State is not really a country, since it was an independent Boer sovereign republic under British
suzerainty (in simplistic terms this means the right of a country to partly control another) in Southern Africa during the second half of the 19th century. It ceased to exist after it was defeated and surrendered to the British Empire at the end of the Second Boer war in 1902. However I think this region is interesting and I hope you find this introduction to the stamps useful as well. common today, but some of the overprints are scarce. Many kinds of overprint errors are known (inverted, double, etc.), and some of them command high prices. In 1900, the British occupied the Republic and the previous stamps were overprinted
River Colony on 28 May 1900. In 1910 this colony along with Cape of Good Hope, Natal and Transvaal formed the Union of South Africa. The first Orange Free State stamps were issued in 1868 (Fig 1) . The sole design used was an orange tree, with the inscription “Oranje Vrij Staat” in the margin. The stamps were typographed by De La Rue and came in denominations from one penny to five shillings, in various colours. Periodic shortages forced the use of overprints in 1877, 1881, 1882, 1888, 1890, 1892, 1896, and 1897. The stamps of the republic are generally Fig 5: SG 133 from 1900 issue

please! and used Cape of Good Hope stamps overprinted with the new name “ORANGE/RIVER/COLONY.” Fig 5. In 1902 a single 6d stamp was overprinted as the original occupation issues but with “E.R.I.” (Edward Rex Imperator), for Edward VII instead of “V.R.I.”. In 1903 a set was issued portraying King Edward VII, a springbok and a gnu (Fig 6). This set was printed again in 1905-09, and is the last set of the colony. An example of the first printing is shown in Fig 3. This has the dots level with the letters, whereas on a later printing as in Fig 4 the dots were raised. There are many other differences to be studied which I will not try to explain here because the Study Circle does a very good job. The colony was renamed in August 1900 46 - Stamp News
The whole range of the many philatelic aspects of the country, from 1848 to 1910, is studied including the postage stamps with their postmarks and the rates of postage, the stationery, the revenue and telegraph stamps and the story of the Anglo Boer War with its effect on the Orange Free State and later, the Orange River Colony. The links include a viewing of a few of the rarities to be found which add to the fascination of collecting this country. To quote the late Robson Lowe: “The study of the stamps of the OFS is an excellent exercise for the brain and a complete panacea for the ills of this troubled world.” This is as true now as it ever was!

philatelic news NZ Post : King Charles III commemorative coronation coins To celebrate the upcoming coronation of King Charles III, NZ Post has produced commemorative coins to mark the occasion. Wellington designer and illustrator Stephen Fuller developed the effigy to be used on New Zealand commemorative coins, and it was personally approved by the King. NZ Post’s Head of Stamps and Collectables Antony Harris says, “We’re delighted to be releasing commemorative legal tender coins celebrating the King’s coronation”. “King Charles III will be the first king of New Zealand to appear on our decimal currency, and it is fitting that his effigy’s first appearance of His Majesty’s effigy will be on coins commemorating the coronation.” Issued by NZ Post under license from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the coins are minted in 0.999 silver and 0.9999 gold. There will be six coins issued to commemorate the King’s coronation, including an 11mm gold coin weighing .5g and a 1oz silver coin. NZ Post will also issue stamps to commemorate the accession and coronation of the King, including a commemorative sheetlet featuring images from the coronation ceremony – which will take place in Westminster Abbey, London on May 6. a portrait of the reigning monarch, beginning with King George V in 1933 when New Zealand coinage was first introduced to replace British currency. As is tradition, the King’s portrait faces in the opposite direction of his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II. The King Charles III commemorative coins will be released on May 3, 2023. DANISH RAILWAY PARCEL STAMPS When browsing the selection of magazines at major newsstands at rail stations in Germany and England I have been amazed by the sheer number of different magazines obviously aimed at railway buffs. I particularly remember counting almost 100 different titles at the newsagent’s in the Cottbus central rail station in the eastern part of Germany. There were magazines about old trains, historic lines, modern trains, ancient locomotives and modern train engines. It is quite amazing that there is such a lively market for this kind of publications. Obviously railway enthusiasts are willing to spend more money on magazines than most other people with speciality interests. Each summer my wife and I spend a day in Denmark using a 24-hour ticket for the Greater Copenhagen area (basically the northern part of the island of Zealand). What interests us is the network of local lines all starting at Hillerød, an ancient city located in the central part of the island. In the past the Hillerød station was the hub for a number of privately owned and operated railway companies serving mostly local towns and rural communities. They
all used stamps in connection with their carriage of parcels. The Danish railways celebrated its centenary in 1947. The first railway line had been opened between Roskilde and Copenhagen in 1847 and the Danish Post Office honoured the centennial with a set of three stamps (Fig. 1) issued on 27 June 1947. However, it was not really the first railway line in Denmark as in the past the country was much larger including the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein in the north-western part of today’s Germany. The first railway line between Altona (near Hamburg) and Kiel was opened in 1844. The first railway station in Copenhagen was inaugurated in 1847 and a new one was ready in 1864. The current Main Station was opened in 1911. It is the second busiest station in Denmark with some 100.000 daily passengers. A commemorative non-postal label (Fig. 2) marking the 75th anniversary of the Copenhagen Main Station was printed in 1986. DSB or the Danish State Railways dates back

Christer Brunström to 1885. It has since taken over most of the more important lines and it is the main train operator in most of the country. The predecessor of the DSB dates back to the 1860s and the first parcel stamps were issued in 1875. Over the years there have been hundreds of parcel stamps including quite a few for specialised services. Shown in Fig. 3 is a 100-øre express parcel stamp issued in 1940. Many of the privately operated railway companies issued extremely colourful stamps for their parcel services. The island of Lolland in the south-east of the country was home to several railway companies including the Lollandbanen with a history going back to 1869. Lolland has a large number of beautiful beaches and several popular summer resorts. In the 1940s and 50s, the company released several stamps to serve as publicity for the region. The stamp shown in Fig. 4 was issued in 1955 and it features a sunny summer’s day at the beach near the port city of Rødbyhavn in the south of the island. Many parcel stamps of course picture all kinds of trains, locomotives, station houses or rail tracks.
The Høng-Tølløse Railway opened in 1901 and the first parcel stamps were issued that year. Most of the stamps issued by this company feature an old locomotive. The stamp shown nearby (Fig. 5) was probably part of the first 1901 issue. Høng is a small town in the west of Zealand, the largest of the Danish islands. Some of the Danish railway parcel stamps can be incredibly difficult to identify as they frequently only carry the acronyms of the companies. The stamps (Fig. 6) issued by the Ebeltoft- Trustrup Railway are particularly tricky as there is no mention of any railway. This company started operations in 1901 and over the years it used slightly more than 50 different stamps. The illustrated stamp shows the railway station in Ebeltoft. The Ebeltoft-Trustrup Railway was a branch line linking the ancient town of Ebeltoft (founded in 1301) on the eastern coast of Jutland with the main line station at Trustrup, a tiny village. The line was closed in 1968. Collectors of the Danish railway parcel stamps will soon discover that this is a very large area as

DANISH RAILWAY PARCEL STAMPS many companies released stamps for more than a century and that each rate hike resulted in new values being overprinted on old stamps and sometimes more than once. There must be thousands of different stamps. One way of collecting these frequently very interesting stamps could be try to locate one or two representative examples from each railway company or to specialise in just one or two railway lines. Towards the end of the 20th century most of the railway companies ceased to use parcel stamps for a variety of reasons. In some cases large remainders were sold off to the trade and some 30 years ago I remember visiting stamp shops in Copenhagen where packets of up to as many as 500 different railway parcel stamps were on sale. In fact, complete mint sheets are available at a more than reasonable cost from some of the railways. In postal history we add cards and covers to our collections studying cancels, rates and postal routes.

When it comes to the railway postal history items we need to look for complete waybills with parcel stamps affixed. Perhaps not that easy to obtain but they do exist. The Danish railway parcel stamps are particularly interesting as they frequently show incredible designs. Denmark is famous for its many colourful poster stamps and many of the parcel stamps were designed and printed by the same companies which specialised in advertising poster stamps. In Denmark there is a society devoted to railway parcel stamps. Today it is known as the Dansk Fragt og Banemaerkerklub (dfbk.dk) and its members have compiled very useful catalogues listing and pricing the stamps. Packets and collections still turn up on internet auction sites and they sell for quite reasonable prices. In fact this is one of the more inexpensive areas to collect despite the fact that some of the stamps are quite rare.
