Stamps in the News - Globally! Worth a pretty penny? Reported at https://edition.cnn. com
The first known piece of mail sent using a prepaid stamp — “one of the greatest leaps forward in human communication” — could fetch between $1.5 million and $2.5 million when it comes up for auction at Sotheby’s in New York in February. If the piece realizes its estimate, Sotheby’s said it would become one of the most valuable pieces of postal history to have ever been auctioned. Dated May 2, 1840, the letter’s original recipient was William Blenkinsop Jr., the 35-year-old manager of a Victorian iron works in Bedlington, a town in the north of England. Sotheby’s state that all that’s known about the letter’s sender is that they posted the missive in London and paid for it with the Penny Black stamp. After receiving the letter, Blenkinsop Jr. turned the envelope inside out and refashioned it as a “Mulready” – an ornate wrapper embellished with images representing the British Empire that acted as another method of prepaid payment introduced at the same time as the Penny Black. That second envelope reached a Mr. Blenkinsop, most likely his father, who lived 75 miles away in Dalston, Carlisle and kept it, although the contents of both letters themselves have been lost. “Surviving over 180 years, the ornate Mulready envelope sealed with a Penny Black revolutionized the way people from all walks of life correspond, 6 - Stamp News

Both sides of the envelope still bear the stamped dates on which they were sent, the first on May 2, 1840 and the second on May 4, two days before the official start date of the Penny Black. While the stamp was wildly successful and subsequently adopted worldwide, the Mulready envelope

In the US, it’s a cow, it’s a monkey… no, it’s a dragon Reported at https://sfstandard.com
As the Year of the Dragon approaches, not everyone is happy about the new Chinese New Year stamp issued by the United States Postal Service. Since 1993, the USPS has released a stamp featuring each year’s zodiac animal. However, this year’s Year of the Dragon design has sparked some backlash from San Francisco’s Chinese community. “It doesn’t look like an Asian dragon at all,” Leland Wong, a Chinatown-based artist said. “I thought it was a monkey.” Wong posted a news article slamming the “monkey-like” dragon, triggering dozens of other comments criticizing the design. Claudine Cheng, the president of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Foundation, who advocated for the Lunar New Year stamp decades ago, expressed discontent with this fierce-looking dragon. “People are celebrating the Lunar New Year and like to see an image that brings happiness and good luck,” Cheng said. “When you look at this interpretation, it doesn’t evoke that kind of emotion.”
Cheng acknowledged that the artist can have their own interpretation of a dragon, but “it has to be culturally sensitive.” David Ho, of the Chinatown Media & Arts Collaborative, said that the design looks like a cow, resembling the well-known evil fictional character Bull Demon King (牛魔王) in ancient Chinese literature. Camille Chew, an East Coast-based artist, was commissioned to design this 12-year Lunar New Year stamp series, which runs from 2020 to 2031, according to the postal service. In a statement, the postal service said the design team always consults with experts and its Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee when working on a stamp design. According to the postal service’s website, the agency will print 22 million copies of the stamp. “I think we need to leave them room to consider a different approach for the second half of this series,” Cheng said. “They still have seven zodiacs to go, so I think we want to leave room for improvement.” There was more dragon controversary in the last dragon cycle in 2012 when people purchasing the Lunar New Year stamps in China were shocked at the design: “When I saw this year’s dragon stamp, I was scared to death!” wrote one Weibo user, echoing the comments of many. The dragon was depicted with its fangs bearing and claws out, seemingly ready to pounce. Its eyes are a dark abyss with only the littlest beads of white staring out at the viewer.

A chance to make right a miscarriage of justice on the Horizon? Reported at https://apnews.com
An inquiry into one of Britain’s gravest injustices has resumed as momentum has grown to compensate and clear the names of more than 900 Post Office branch managers wrongly convicted of theft or fraud because of a faulty computer system. The inquiry that began three years ago resumed the day after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed to introduce unprecedented legislation to reverse the convictions following a television docudrama that created a huge surge of public support for the former postmasters. “This is one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in our nation’s history,” Sunak said. “People who worked hard to serve their communities had their lives and their reputations destroyed through absolutely no fault of their own. The victims must get justice and compensation.”
The Metropolitan Police said this month, that it was investigating “potential fraud offences arising out of these prosecutions,” relating to money the Post Office received “as a result of prosecutions or civil actions” against falsely accused postal workers. After the Post Office rolled out the Horizon information technology system, developed by Japanese company Fujitsu, in 1999 to automate sales accounting, local Post Office managers began finding unexplained losses they were responsible to cover. The Post Office maintained Horizon was reliable and accused branch managers of dishonesty. Between 2000 and 2014, around 900 postal workers were wrongly convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting, with some going to prison and others forced into bankruptcy. In total, more than 2,000 people were affected by the scandal. Some killed themselves or attempted suicide. Others said their marriages fell apart and reported becoming community pariahs. A group of postal workers took legal action against the Post Office in 2016. Three years later, the High Court in London ruled that Horizon contained a number of “bugs, errors and defects” and that the Post Office “knew there were serious issues about the reliability” of the system. “Failures of investigation and disclosure were so egregious as to make the prosecution of any of the ‘Horizon cases’ an affront to the conscience of the court,” Justice Timothy Holroyde said. To date, just 95 convictions have been overturned. The moment of reckoning was a long time in the making, but it was turbocharged by a four-part television docudrama that aired Jan. 1 and fuelled public outrage that led to days of bruising headlines about the Post Office and sparked a swift response by lawmakers. Stamp News - 9
Stamps in the News - Globally! Despite hundreds of news stories over the years about court hearings and the continuing public inquiry, the show seen by millions rapidly galvanized support for victims of the injustice. More than 1 million people signed an online petition calling for former Post Office chief executive Paula Vennells to lose her Commander of the Order of the British Empire title she received in 2018. By the end of Tuesday, she said she would relinquish the honour. Paul Patterson, Europe director of Japan’s Fujitsu Ltd who created the faulty technology, told a committee of UK politicians that the company will provide funds to compensate branch managers. “I think there is a moral obligation for the company to contribute,” said Mr Patterson, who has been in his post since 2019. “To the sub-postmasters and their families, Fujitsu would like to apologise for our part in this appalling miscarriage of justice.” The government plans to set aside 1 billion pounds ($1.28 billion) to compensate the wrongly convicted and others whose lives were destroyed in the scandal. To date, a total of nearly 150 million pounds has been paid to more than 2,500 victims, Sunak said. In addition to the inquiry, a committee in Parliament plans to question the chief executives of the Post Office and Fujitsu. Some members of Parliament have called for prosecuting those who allowed postmasters to take the blame for the faulty software. Last week, police in London said they were investigating potential fraud related to money the Post Office received as a result of prosecutions or civil actions against postal workers. They are also looking into possible perjury or perversion of justice charges over the Post Office’s investigation and prosecution of the cases. The investigation will take at least until 2026, Britain’s most senior police officer has 10 - Stamp News

Monkey business in Djbouti
Reported at www.mayoclinicproceedings.org Mpox came to worldwide attention in May 2022, when a cluster of cases was detected in London, initially in men connected with a person who had recently travelled to the United Kingdom from Nigeria. By July 2022, the disease had been observed in many people with no travel history or identifiable sick contact and in numerous countries outside of the United Kingdom and Africa, so the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a “public health emergency of international concern.” With population education about transmission and targeted vaccination, the outbreak waned, and in May 2023, the WHO declared that the public health emergency was over. In November 2022, the WHO issued a statement that the organization would use the term mpox instead of the misleading term “monkeypox”, and the WHO encouraged other agencies, public health workers, and medical personnel to do the same.

Monkeys are not a natural reservoir of the disease. However, in 2022, Djibouti and the Central African Republic (CAR) each issued 2 stamp sheets on the subject of “Variole du singe,” French for monkeypox. Both countries have liberal stamp-issuing policies and have issued many stamps designed to appeal to international collectors on topics not directly connected with the issuing nations. CAR issued nearly 1000 new stamps in 2018 alone, most prepared by Stamperija, a printing company in Lithuania. Few–if any–of these stamps are used postally. These 2022 stamp issues correctly suggest the smallpox (variola) vaccination can be beneficial in mpox prevention but are problematic in several ways. The CAR sheets include photos of chimpanzees while the Djibouti sheets include a rather sinister-appearing macaque, even though primates are not natural reservoirs of mpox , monkeys were not the source of the 2022 public health emergency and exposure to them poses no transmission risk. Both Djibouti philatelic sheets double down on this misconception by including a triangular yellow hazard sign warning against cartoon monkeys with viral proteins emerging from their heads. In addition, the Djibouti stamps include an image of an African child suffering from a severe case of small-
pox, rather than mpox–a photograph taken before smallpox was eradicated in the 1970s.

Danish backflip
Reported at www.philapress.de In last month’s Stamps in the News we reported the radical postal changes that came into force on January 1st 2024 including the immediate invalidation of all existing domestic stamps. The radical postal reform in Denmark, which came into force in the new year, has caused quite a stir. Now PostNord has backflipped and is offering an exchange option for the previous Danish stamps. Originally, all postage stamps for domestic mail were supposed to become invalid with effect from January 1, 2024, as VAT will be charged on domestic mail traffic in the future and PostNord must follow a requirement from the Ministry of Taxation. The stamps should only remain usable for VAT-exempt foreign traffic until the end of 2024. Since January 8th and until June 30th, 2024, stamps in denominations of 12 and 36 crowns as well as supplementary stamps of 1 crown that were issued in the past two years can now be exchanged. Exchanges can be made from a minimum total denomination of 120 crowns. In addition, an exchange fee of 50 crowns is due. After all, PostNord follows the laws of logic for foreign correspondence in the revised regulations. The original decision to arbitrarily declare the VAT-exempt stamps for this VAT-exempt service
invalid at the end of 2024 has been repealed. The chairman of the Danish Philatelist Association is not very enthusiastic about PostNord’s actions. But also about how the political parties and ministries that are responsible for the amendment to the law have acted in the past few months. “It would have been more consumer-friendly if all the old stamps could have been exchanged by the end of the year,” says Svendsen. He sees the revised regulations as a success, which also came about through the lobbying of philatelists. Further drastic changes are certainly foreseeable, as PostNord only holds the rights to process international mail until 2024. As expected, the private postal provider DAO has thrown its hat into the ring for domestic mail traffic. Interestingly for philatelists: DAO is also considering issuing its own “shipping stamps”. Wood Blocks Stamped Designs cut into blocks of wood have been used to create printed images for two millennia. Originating in China around 200 CE, woodblock printing remained the dominant method of printing text and images in Asia into the 1800s. This traditional craft was used to design the images used for the set of postage stamps that were issued to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III. At first glance it may seem that the use of this ancient craft in the design of these stamps is nothing more than a device to emphasise the traditional values of the new King. However, as we will see, the use of wood blocks to design and produce stamps has been in use for almost as long as stamps have been used for postage.

The Woodblocks of Victora The story begins in the colony of Victoria in early 1854. Prior to the federation of Australia in 1901 each of the main administrative areas existed as separate Crown colonies. Victoria, established in 1851, began issuing its
own postage stamps almost immediately. By 1854 Victoria not only urgently required additional stamp values for new services, but also had to address severe delays in the supplies of stamps coming out from England. In response, the Victorian government issued a request for tenders in April 1854 for the design and production of four stamps. A sixpence/6d (for the new inland postal rate), a two shilling/2s value, a 1s value specifically to pay the registered mail fee, and a separate 6d design for the ‘posted too late’ fee. There was a reluctance among the Establishment of the day to commemorate anything other than a very narrow range of potential subjects on postage stamps. The usual to-and-fro ensued; the stamp design was based on a wood-engraving by Cadeadlock finally broken by the appointment of Tony nadian artist and wood-engraver Rosemary Kilbourn. I think as a result of the collaboration between Benn and you will agree, it is very dramatic. that requires such dexterity and touch as her preferred medium, wood-engraving. Ultimately the legacy of her illness would force Claire to retire in 1965 but not before she had compiled an impressive catalogue of work. I have had the privilege to read much of Claire’s correspondence from around the time of the Canada Post commission and it provides a fascinating insight. Canada Post approached Claire in the Autumn of 1982 setting up a meeting to discuss the project. It is clear, from the correspondence, that Claire, and her mother, were extremely proud that their father (and husband) was to be honoured in such a way. Claire made suggestions to Iain Baines, one of the in-house product design team at Canada Post, as to which of her father’s poems that might be chosen, and which print from her wood-engraved designs might best compliment it. Canada Post settled on E. J. Pratt’s poem ‘Sea Gulls’ and a woodblock print, entitled ‘Wings of the Fog.’ Both pieces of art that were chosen by Canada Post demonstrate the different approaches that can be taken when utilising woodblock engraving as the inspiration for postage stamp design - the commissioning of a new design, or the use of an existing woodblock print. A New Beginning In May 2023 Royal Mail issued a set of four stamps to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III. The design and production process were a collaboration between Royal Mail, award winning design agency Atelier Works, the wood-engraver Andrew
Figure 10 Stamp commemorating ‘Fruits of the Earth’ (Frederick Grove), engraved by Rosemary Kilbourn, 1979, SG 940 Davidson and the security printer Cartor. The brief was handed down to Atelier Works in November 2022. The requirement on the face of it was straightforward – “reflect the life-long interests of King Charles III.” Community, diversity, the significance of the Commonwealth, and the key tenets of sustainability and biodiversity. According to Ian Chilvers, Partner at Atelier Works, it was decided that the only way to successfully express such complex subjects in postage stamp form was to use illustration to compress many visual elements into four miniature compositions. Atelier felt that the skills of wood-engraver Andrew Davidson were particularly well suited to bring a sense of traditional craftsmanship to the overall design. This design nuance perfectly reflected the passion King Charles III has for traditional skills. Andrew Davidson had previously produced a cover design for an environmental book The King had written in 2010 and aesthetically the style of the design fitted perfectly. Andrew produced sketches of each of the four designs and these were approved by Royal Mail prior to engraving. Andrew used Lemonwood to engrave the designs in relief and then printed designs from

each of the woodblocks using an 1859 Albion press. Atelier then made high quality digital scans of the images. One of the greatest technical challenges was to prevent the designs collapsing and becoming murky when the digital images were reduced in size to accommodate postage stamp dimensions. As Ian Chilvers eloquently puts it, “a wood engraving is a black expanse, with light and form created when fine white lines are cut from the darkness.” Atelier spent many hours figuring out how to digitally open-up the lines so the designs could be appreciated in miniature. Once they had solved the challenge of ‘holding’ the lines digitally, Atelier had to ensure that the printers could hold the detail in the printing. Further testing had to be carried out to ensure that potential technical problems with ink spread, paper stretch and misalignment would not lead to a loss in clarity in the final print-run. Then there was the colour. To reflect the simplistic beauty of wood-engraving, Atelier specified a set of five, ready-mixed, single colours. However, printers use the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) colour process. The press-pass (a check to
make sure the printed colours and design match the approved final design work) at Cartor was incredibly technical, with intricate fine-tuning, to ensure the beauty of a traditional craft was reflected in a very modern product. From the 1850s to 2023 stamps have been designed and produced using woodblock engraving. Even in this digital age this traditional craft still possesses the power to create stunning imagery without equal. Queensland Esperanto Card The 1911 Queensland 1d Queen Victoria postal card can be found with private printing of an Esperanto ‘chain letter’ form printed on the front (Figure 10) and a message in Esperanto on the reverse (Figure 11). Esperanto was created in the late 1870s and early 1880s by L. Zamenhof in what is now Poland. He created the language to reduce the “time and labor we spend in learning foreign tongues”, and to foster harmony between people from different countries. Stamp News - 21
Postal Stationery From as early as 1889, Australians, had contact with him and were included in the second address list of Esperantists in the same year. By 1909 the Universal Esperanto Association had 102 Australian members and the first Australian Esperanto Conference was held in 1911. Nearly all Esperantists, when they have had a few weeks’ tuition, commenced corresponding with people in foreign lands, either by letter or postcard. This has been described as one of their greatest pleasures, and encouraged them to continue learning the language. You could image that this would especially appeal to stamp and postcard collectors. The form on the front has numbered spaces for 6 addresses and instructions in Esperanto in the bottom left-hand corner. The cards have a message printed on the reverse in Esperanto which asks the receiver to send this card to another Esperantist, preferably in another country. In return they were offered a ‘nice postcard’ from Queensland. They were also encouraged to exchange stamps, postmarks, railway stamps etc in exchange for Queensland postcards. For used stamps and postcards they are advised to ‘Please go to the envelope immediately and make them square (not round) and that there is some space around the edge’. Articles on Queensland Postal Stationery - Online Two articles on Queensland Postal Stationery originally published in the Postal Stationery Collector have been made available to the public on the Postal Stationery Society of Australia’s website at https:// postalstationeryaustralia.com/queensland-postal-stationery/ . Written by Peter Hørlyck and completed by Ray Harris following his untimely death. The Preface states Nigeria may not seem the obvious choice of country for a specialist in postal stationery. With a rather limited set of postal stationery classes and issues involved, the number of pages in the Higgins & Gage catalogue is very small. Furthermore, with
most issues up to 1960 printed by De la Rue and with their high quality of work, not many varieties are found. However, when we include the precursors from Lagos, Oil Rivers/Niger Coast Protectorate and Southern Nigeria, and if we look beyond the Higgins & Gage catalogue, a whole new world is unravelled with many possibilities of specialisation turning up, as well as many mysteries. The book provides an in-depth study of the postal stationery of Nigeria up to 2000. The book starts with chapters on Lagos, Niger Coast, Northern Nigeria, Southern Nigeria, Nigeria 1914–1960 and Nigeria 1960 – 2000. It then considers Postal Orders, Reply Coupons, UPU Specimens and Cut-outs, before returning to geography with chapters on the Cameroons under WW1 British administration, and another on Biafra. There are Appendices relating to De La Rue, Crown Agents and British Post Office archives, Government gazettes, and essays and proofs in private hands plus a list of known scarce items (with an attempt at rarity assessment). The book ends with a bibliography and a brief index. Available from the RPSL Retail price £54, Members Price £49. https://www.rpsl.org.uk/language/en-US/Home/PubStamp News - 23

Postal Stationery Collector, Journal of the Postal Stationery Society of Australia, On-Line Many Societies have in recent years made their Journals available on line. In some cases, only for members and in other cases older issues are available publically with only the more recent issues being restricted to members. This has proved a great boon for collectors especially those engaged in philatelic research. The Postal Stationery Society of Australia has now made the Postal Stationery Collector up to 2019 publically available at https://postalstationeryaustralia.com/journals/. The Journals from 2020 onwards remain restricted to members. This is particularly important for collectors of Australian colonial and Commonwealth postal stationery as many important articles have been published in this Journal.

New Stamp Issues Aotearoa New Zealand - Making Games : A developing industry From the early days when ‘video game’ technology consisted of a scant few coloured dots moving slowly across a dark background screen, human imagination has made more of games than what we see on the screen. We imbue the visuals with meaning and we map stories onto them – even the ones with little written narrative to speak of – so it’s no surprise that a storytelling culture such as Aotearoa’s has always punched above its weight in such a medium. Games developed in New Zealand have run the gamut from multimillion bestsellers to winners of every major international game award, and these stamps showcase a diverse mix of those commercial and critical successes.

Whether you play games to unwind on the bus or plugged into your PC, dialled in on a voice call with a half-dozen of your mates, video games provide a way to relax, to socialise, to explore, and to tap in to worlds both weirder and more expansive than our own. The stamp issue for March features five games that were developed in Aotearoa New Zealand and have been distributed around the world. The games featured in this stamp issue are: • Bloons TD 6 by Ninja Kiwi • Depth by Digital Confectioners • Dredge by Black Salt Games • Mini Metro by Dinosaur Polo Club • Into the Dead 2 by Pik Pok Also available are maximum cards,

Åland - 40th Anniversary of Åland Stamps On 1 March 1984, the first Åland stamps were issued. On 1 March 2024, Åland Post celebrates the 40th anniversary of Åland stamps with the issue of an embossed and playful miniature sheet designed by Swedish-Bulgarian illustrator Tzenko Stoyanov. The theme of the edition is limitless communication. With warmth and humour, the motif illustrates a dream journey through stamps with Åland and postal elements. History and tradition meet future and innovation, showing the joy of collecting stamps, sending, and receiving mail.

The Golden Eagle, Scops Owl and Lesser Kestrel are just three of the birds which can be found in this collection. The artistic vision behind this collection was brought to life by local graphic artist, Mr. Stephen Perera, in collaboration with Mr. Nicholas Ferrary, a dedicated wildlife enthusiast and Gibraltarian native, whom has skilfully captured the photographs of the twelve birds of prey featured in the set and miniature sheet of this collection. The Birds of Prey collection is comprised of a set of six stamps, a miniature sheet, featuring a further six birds, and accompanying First Day Covers and Presentation Packs. New Stamp Issues Aotearoa New Zealand - Marine Reserves Aotearoa New Zealand’s marine environment is 15 times larger than its land mass. Along with the privilege of such a large and bountiful ocean surrounding us comes the responsibility to look after it. There are currently 44 marine reserves, but they cover less than 1% of our ocean. In the future, and with the support of New Zealanders, the number of reserves will be expanded, and together with other forms of protection, will form a conservation network that protects the full spectrum of marine species in our waters. These stamps offer a tantalising snapshot of some of the many charismatic creatures that call our marine reserves home. World Wetlands Day, held every year on

Hello and welcome to another in my series. We are nearing the end of the alphabet, and Y is either easy or interesting, depending on your point of view. I have decided to show a few philatelic items from Yunnanfu. Hopefully this is both interesting and something new to some of my readers. Yunnanfu, or Yunnan Fu was formerly Yunnansen, the main city of the Chinese Province of Yunnan. Today it is known as
Fig 1 - SG 5 OPT YUNNANSEN 1903 46 - Stamp News
Fig 3 - SG 15 OPT YUNNANSEN 1903
Kunming and is a rather beautiful city. There is a short period of postal history here from 1900 to 1922 because there was an Indo-Chinese Post Office there. First, where is Yunnan Province? Perhaps the easiest way to explain is this - go to Hong Kong, go north to Guangzhou, turn left, and go about 1000 km and you are in the southFig 2 - SG 8 OPT YUNNANSEN ern part of the 1903

province. The first stamps used in 1903 were those from Indo China, issued in a set of 15 values and surcharged with the values in Chinese and the word YUNNANSEN Fig 1, 2 and 3). As far as I know there were three more issues in 1906, 1908 and 1919. These were again stamps from Indo China. The 1906 issue was surcharged with values in Chinese and the word Yunnan-Fou, the 1908 issues was surcharged again with the value in Chinese but this
time with the word YUNNANFOU and the 1919 issue was surcharged again in Chinese but with the value also surcharged and with the word YUNNANFOU. These are some examples. The 1906 issue
Left : Fig 6 - SG 50 YUNNANFOU 1919 Right : Fig 7 - SG 63 YUNNANFOU 1919 Stamp News - 47
Beginners please! by Michael Dodd (Fig 4) has an interesting history being from the definitive series by the Parisian designer Andre Grasset. This design was not well received and only lasted three years before being replaced by the Native Women design of the 1908 issue (Fig 5). The Gasset design offers interesting reading and if you have the time I recommend this article: http://www. sicp-online.org/exhibits/Grasset%20Stamps. pdf. The 1919 issue is again with the Native Woman design (fig 6) with also a variation on the design and the high value issues in the ” Cambodian” design (fig 7) but with the surcharge being in both Chinese and the numerical value.
A very interesting period and with some attractive and quite pricey stamps to collect. One final image you may enjoy. One of many - complete envelopes/covers for the postal historians perhaps. (Fig 8) This from 1929 and the place is now cancelled YUNNANFU, (although the stamps are now Republic of China issues) which is where we started this little journey! One more article in this series. Can you guess what it will be? Also, I welcome idea for other countries that you might like me to research and write about. You can reach me at cddstamps@gmail.com Michael Dodd, owner cddstamps.com

CRIME ON STAMPS In recent years Sweden has seen a surge in warfare between competing criminal gangs. They have employed extreme violence often using teenagers to murder their enemies. There have even been several cases where innocent people have been killed for the simple reason they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s a war for the control of the lucrative drugs market and the gangs are apparently led by people who seem to have found safe havens in countries like Spain, Turkey, Iraq, Iran or the United Arab Emirates. The gangs keep recruiting new members among the many immigrants and refugees who have come to Sweden in recent years but who apparently have not yet been fully integrated. Now this is real crime at its worst. However, numerous Swedish and other Nordic crime writers have been extremely successful attracting millions of enthusiastic readers both at home and abroad. On my visits to Germany I have noted that most booksellers have a section devoted to “Schwedenkrimis” but the genre is generally referred to as Nordic noir.
However, crime fiction did not originate in Sweden or the other Nordic countries. Many other writers have introduced extremely clever detectives who never fail to solve their criminal riddles and they always bring the culprits to justice. Sherlock Holmes is undoubtedly the most famous detective of all times despite being an imaginary character having been created by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). Sherlock Holmes is depicted on a stamp (Fig. 1) issued by San Marino in 1979. Week after week Doyle wrote new stories about the adventures of his famous detective but finally felt that he needed to end it all. He then wrote a story called The Final Problem in 1893 which ended in mortal battle between Holmes and his arch enemy Dr. Moriarty. They both died. The scene has been captured on a British stamp issued in 1993 (Fig. 2). This certainly was not an end that British readers liked and rather unwillingly Doyle had to resuscitate his famous hero and Dr. Moriarty. Rather miraculously Holmes had survived the fall and returned to his home at No. 221B Baker Street in London where

Christer Brunström he continued to solve many more crimes and mysteries along with his friend Dr. Watson. British crime writer Agatha Christie (1890-1976) created two most popular sleuths – Belgian detective Hercule Poirot who used his brilliant brain to solve all kinds of enigmatic mysteries and Miss Marple, an elderly lady residing in a small but beautiful English village where everyone gossiped about everything. Rather unexpectedly the Central American nation of Nicaragua released a long set of stamps illustrating famous imaginary detectives including Hercule Poirot (Fig. 3) in 1972. The set was issued to mark the 50th anniversary of INTERPOL. Inspector Maigret of the Parisian police is another world famous policeman. He was invented by Belgian Writer Georges Simenon (1903-1989) who wrote numerous stories about this pipe smoking inspector. He was also depicted on the previously discussed Nicaraguan stamp set (Fig. 4). Nordic crime writers have of course learnt a lot from their more famous international colleagues but

they have also added a lot to the genre. Maj Sjöwall (1935-2020) and her partner Per Wahlöö (19261975) worked together to produce a long series of crime novels with Chief Inspector Martin Beck as the main character. He works at the major crimes unit in Stockholm. The authors certainly perfected the art of producing good crime fiction. In their novels they introduce the social background in which all sorts of murders occur. Inspector Beck is a low key person who works hard trying to figure out who the culprits are and he also tries to find out why. In 2010 Sweden released a set of six stamps featuring some of the most popular Swedish crime writers. Sjövall and Wahlöö were of course included. A rather interesting feature of the designs is that they include bullet holes. (Fig. 5). There have been quite a number of films about Martin Beck and his colleagues. In the most recent ones, Beck planned to retire but he was instead promoted to an even higher position within the police force.

Stamp News - 51
CRIME ON STAMPS Another extremely successful policeman was created by Henning Mankell (1948-2015). Inspector Kurt Wallander is based in the town of Ystad in the south of Sweden where he heads the major crimes unit at the local police station. He is very fond of opera music and enjoys the company of women but his relations with the opposite sex are never successful (which seems to be the sad destiny for most policemen, at least in novels). Mankell was not only a prominent crime writer but he also wrote plays and he certainly was a student of contemporary Swedish society. For many years he lived in Mozambique in Africa where used much of his money to help finance a variety of local development programmes. Like Doyle, Mankell wanted to discontinue his main character and, in the last book of a fairly long series, Wallander shows sign of beginning dementia. Despite his ever more serious health problems,
he manages to catch the murderer and solve his last case. In the last paragraph of the novel, Mankell writes that Wallander has reached the final stage of dementia. Thus we can expect no resurrection of this literary hero. However, this does not prevent film producers from releasing new films based on the characters once created by Henning Mankell. Henning Mankell was also honoured on the Swedish 2010 set (Fig. 6). The stamps were printed in the form of a booklet pane and released in connection with the 2010 Stamp Day, an annual event in Sweden. My local stamp club organised Stamp Day in the Municipal Library, a rather impressive building in my home town of Halmstad. A local crime writer had been invited to talk about his work and the members of the club had prepared an exhibit of stamps featuring some of the more famous literary detectives.
