This edition features a very diverse set of stamp issues in both subject and design. From the 2011 Lunar New Year issue celebrating the Year of the Rabbit, which continues the design of the zodiac cycle by artist Dani Poon, to the romanticism of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Boats. One of the little boats found dotted throughout the islands is featured on our cover. There are two new stamps available for use with the Personalised Stamps™ service in time for Valentine’s Day and wedding invitations. The stamps are quite different visually and are designed to be used for a number of special occasion and everyday uses. The blank first day cover can also be used to make a personal statement when sending invitations or other social mail. Our program continues with a military issue in February. This subject has always been a strong thematic with some collections devoted to different representative corps. This particular stamp issue looks at some of the important aircraft used over the last few decades by the RAAF. Air Force Aviation will be of particular interest to thematic collectors as well as mail users with an interest in planes.
In 2011 we celebrate the Centenary of International Women’s Day. This single stamp celebrates the achievements of women past and present and offers vision to the women of the future. This Bulletin also brings a new set of postage paid envelopes using scenic views of a bygone era a fitting release as we celebrate the centenary of Australian postal stationery. Don’t forget to order your copy of the 2010 Collection of Australian Stamps which provides a great overview of Australia in 2010 and the major anniversaries and events we celebrated through our stamp issue program for the year. There are also a number of special collectables still available online at auspost.com. au/impressions. If there’s a celebration coming up I’m sure you’ll find something suitable in the range available. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my congratulations to the winner of this year’s Stamp Poll and concur with their choice of favourite stamp of 2010. While there were some interesting and varied selections the majority of voters were in agreement. You’ll find all the details on page 21 of this edition. Kind regards
Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

The Chinese zodiac is made up of a 12-year cycle and Chinese animal signs are used for dating the years. According to the Chinese calendar, the year begins somewhere towards the end of January or early February. For festive seasons, such as the New Year, the Chinese Lunar Calendar is the determining factor. The recurring animal year cycle is Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The Rabbit is the fourth sign in the Chinese zodiac and symbolises creativity, compassion and sensitivity. In the Chinese story of the Jade Rabbit, three sages transformed themselves into pitiful old men, and begged for food from a fox, a monkey and a rabbit. The fox and the monkey both had food to give to the old men, but the rabbit, who had no food to give, jumped into a blazing fire to offer his own flesh instead.

1668142 Minisheet
The sages were so touched by the rabbit’s sacrifice that they let him live in the Moon Palace, where he became known as the “Jade Rabbit”. The stamps show the development of the Chinese character for the Rabbit, shown fully in the $1.80 stamp, and the way it is derived from its pictorial representation, shown in the 60c stamp. Paper-cut motifs are used to pictorially represent the Rabbit in the 60c stamp. Paper cuts are one of the most popular forms of Chinese art and are commonly used to decorate windows, lanterns, mirrors, gates and walls during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The miniature sheet tells the story (in Chinese and English) about the Jade Rabbit and how he came to be on the moon. There is a special silver foil overprinting on the stamps, minisheet and zodiac sheetlet. 1668098 Zodiac sheetlet

1670220 Maxicard set of 2
The Valentine’s Day tradition of giving red roses is believed to date from the 18th century, when the French monarch King Louis XVI gave red roses to his Queen, Marie Antoinette, as a symbol of his love. During the 19th century, ribbon, paper lace and cut-outs of flowers, doves and cupids were used in the designs of handmade and manufactured cards. There are two very distinct designs in this issue-the lasting beauty of red roses and a more contemporary design using hearts and vine leaves in a pattern of love.

Centenary of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day Stamp
1673002 First day cover
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It is the story of ordinary women as makers of history and is rooted in the struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. The IWD global centenary is celebrated in 2011.
1673201 Sheetlet of 10
The first IWD was held on 19 March 1911 when more than a million European women united, calling for the right of women to vote, work and hold public office and an end to discrimination. In 1910, at an international conference of women held in Copenhagen, a woman named Clara Zetkin (leader of the “Women’s Office” for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day. Clara would go on to launch the very first International Women’s Day on 19 March the following year.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated on 8 March each year since 1913, when the date was transferred from 19 March. It aims to promote positive change and raise awareness about problems women face in their everyday lives and is also a chance to celebrate the achievements of women. This date is also designated in many countries as a national holiday. The first Australian IWD rally took place on 25 March 1928 in the Sydney Domain, organised by the Militant Women’s Movement of the Communist Party of Australia, followed by IWD marches in Sydney and Melbourne in 1931. The first Australian IWD committee was established in 1936 in Sydney and aimed at organising large rallies and raising the prominence of IWD. The stamp combines images and graphic elements, including the symbol for women, to create a celebratory feel that conveys the sense that this is a centenary for all women.
ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS The women’s symbol in the Centenary of International Women’s Day is printed in metallic ink. A sheetlet of 10 has also been produced.
The International Women’s Day Centenary celebrates women of the past, inspires the women of today and will give vision to the women of the future. Women have made great strides in equality yet there is still a great deal to be achieved on many fronts and the 2011 IWD Centenary will provide a unique and global opportunity to reignite, inspire and channel women’s equality for the future. www.internationalwomensday.com

Air Force Aviation 60c
This stamp issue marks the retirement of the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) most prominent aircraft – the F-111 “Pig”. After 37 years service, this stalwart of aviation combat is being replaced from 2010. The aircraft represent a range of military functions and capabilities and includes F-111’s replacement.
F-111
60c
F-111 The F-111 “Pig” is a twin-engine, swing-wing aircraft that can take off and land at relatively low speeds. The aircraft gets its nickname from its ability to hunt at night with its nose to the ground due to its terrain-following radar. The aircraft was introduced to the RAAF in 1973.

F/A-18F The F/A-18F Super Hornet is the new strike fighter that replaces the long-serving F-111. The Super Hornet, is a battleproven aircraft with a multi-role capability. It has exceptional manoeuvrability and a limitless angle of attack.

In 1968 the Floral Emblems definitive stamps featured the flowers adopted as emblems by each state. Four of the six stamps were the work of two artists - Nell Wilson (1901–1985) and Dorothy Thornhill (1900–1987).
Women Stamp Artists Until 1959 every Australian Commonwealth stamp had been designed by a male artist, but several Australian colonial stamps were designed by women artists. In 1887 New South Wales staged a public competition to produce designs for the Centennial stamp series. Two women were amongst the eight first prize winners; each entrant’s submission being judged anonymously by the use of a nom-de-plume. Although Miss Devine’s prize winning design was never used for a stamp, she was commissioned to prepare the 2d Emu and 8d Lyrebird Centennial stamp designs. Another of her competition designs gained second prize ranking and was adopted for the NSW 2½d stamp of 1891. The second winner, Mrs F.W. Stoddard, submitted a design featuring the NSW Governors of 1788 and 1888, respectively. This design was adopted for the 20s. Centennial stamp. During the next 70 years no woman designed an Australian stamp because the designs were routinely prepared by male artist-engravers of the Note Printing Branch, Melbourne.
20
In 1959–60, definitive stamps featuring native Australian flowers were the work of Margaret Stones (b.1920), a noted botanical artist. Three of the Flowers series stamps were printed on yellow-tinted paper to simulate two-colour printing. Around this time, a definitive stamp series featuring animals was designed by noted book illustrator, Eileen Mayo (1906– 1994). Six Animals stamps were issued between 1959 and 1962, and Stamp Collecting Annual (UK) selected three Mayo-designed stamps for the world’s top ten stamps of the year during three consecutive years. Following a decision to introduce multicolour photogravure printing of stamps, the Australian Birds definitive series was issued during 1964–65. The stamps were designed by Canberra artist, Betty Temple Watts (1901–1992). Although the stamps had less than two years’ life before decimal currency caused their withdrawal, five of the designs, as well as three new Birds designs by the same artist, were issued in the 1966 Decimal Definitive series. The 1966 series also included stamps featuring Great Barrier Reef marine life by Eileen Mayo.
A remarkable situation had emerged. Between 1959 and 1968, female stamp artists had designed 34 Australian definitive stamps that remained current for several years. Since the 1970s, numerous women have designed stamps and it was becoming more commonplace rather than the exception. From 1978 to 1980, Kay Breeden Williams designed 20 stamps featuring Australian birds. Considering the postal usage the Birds definitive stamps were put to, the Birds stamps of Kay BreedenWilliams were probably the “most seen” issues of any Australian stamp designer of the time. Sue Passmore is another prolific stamp artist. She designed the 21 Bicentennial stamps issued for the First Fleet during 1987–88, as well as 12 of the 19 Sports definitive stamps issued between 1989 and 1991. It is interesting to note that Australia Post’s three stamp design competitions held amongst primary school children to generate designs resulted in eight of the nine winning designs adopted as stamps being the work of girls. In judging each competition the entries were identified by age group but not by gender.
