Dear Collectors
Welcome to the May edition of the Stamp Bulletin, the first after the recent excitement and success of the 2017 Melbourne International Stamp Exhibition. We were pleased with what we were able to offer collectors and visitors to the exhibition. It was also great to see so many collectors enjoying the four days and supporting the Australian Philatelic Federation and philately in general.

The special exhibits and the daily releases Australia Post produced for the show attracted many to the event. A highlight for some collectors was the official AFL team medallion covers, assembled onsite and individualised with a personal inscription on the back of the medallion. The innovative concept was developed with our print and production arm, Australia Post Sprintpak. The first stamp issue released in May delves into four cave sites, highlighting their specific features. From the impressive stalactites of the Cliefden Main Cave Clown Room to Kubla Khan Cave and its spectacular shawl formations, these intriguing sites are a magnet for caving enthusiasts. Moving from subterranean to urban settings, our second issue released in May celebrates the work of street artists. Over recent decades, unsanctioned graffiti has transformed into sophisticated, colourful artworks that enliven our city streets. In 1967, Australians were asked to vote on changes to the constitution that would bring all Australians
australiapostcollectables.com.au
under federal law and governance, and would count all citizens in the national census. Previously, this was not the case for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. On 27 May 1967, Australians were unified in their call for equality. Our stamp issue recognises this significant milestone. Lions Clubs International, an organisation of volunteers serving communities at home and abroad, turns 100 this year, which we mark with a single stamp. We also recognise one of Australia’s early literary figures: Henry Lawson, born 150 years ago, penned many memorable characters and stories that resonated with his readers. This edition of the Stamp Bulletin also presents two stamp issues for gardening and plant enthusiasts — Australian Succulents, featuring four of our native species, and Garden Fruits of Cocos, full of tropical flavour and colour. You will also find a list of products for the 2017 Australian Legends stamp issue on page 28.

Cliefden is the site of the first discovery of limestone on mainland Australia in 1815.
Located along the Belubula River, north-west of Lyndhurst, is the Cliefden karst environment – one of the most significant cave systems in New South Wales. The stamp features the impressive stalagmites and stalactites of the Clown Room in Cliefden Main Cave. As well as its more than 100 caves, Cliefden also has an abundance of well-preserved and globally significant fossil deposits. Weebubbie Cave, near Eucla in Western Australia, is a culturally significant site to the Mirning people. Formed millions of years ago, it is the deepest cave in the Nullarbor, which itself is made up of the largest continuous block of limestone in the world. As can be seen on the stamp, its lakes are crystal clear. Undara Volcanic National Park, Queensland, is home to Undara
Lava Tube, which is one of the longest lava tube cave systems in the world. About 190,000 years ago, a single flow of lava poured down a dry riverbed. The outer layer cooled into a hard crust, while the centre drained away to leave a hollow tube. Surviving segments of the tube form caves and arches, including Mikoshi Cave, as pictured on the stamp. Kubla Khan Cave and its stunning formations are named after the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem of the same name. Located in the Mole Creek Karst National Park, Tasmania, the cave is filled with incredible features, including spectacular shawl formations DESIGN and a towering 18-metre stalagmite known as the Khan.

In recent decades there has been an explosion of art practice in our urban environments. Street art describes public visual art expression that appears outside traditional art venues. Beginning as unsanctioned graffiti in the 1980s, street art has evolved into a sophisticated range of practices, including stencil art, poster art, spray painting, yarn bombing and installation art. Australia has a particularly vibrant street art culture.
Adnate’s large-scale works can be seen all over the world. His 23-metre mural of an Indigenous boy was painted in Hosier Lane, Melbourne, in 2014. Vans the Omega painted the vivid female portrait on a house in Railway Terrace, Adelaide, in 2015. Rone and Phibs collaborated on Forever Curious, the expressive portrait of a woman in Rutledge Lane, Melbourne, in 2013. Irish artist Fin DAC created the mural Shinka as part of the Little Rundle Street Art Project in Adelaide in early 2016.
This issue represents four street art portraits by internationally respected artists. 1934142 Minisheet $4

The stamp design captures the unifying impact of the referendum, the dot-art and line elements forming a powerful symbol of two fingerprints merging to form one, in a gesture of coming together.
This stamp issue commemorates Australia’s most successful federal referendum. On 27 May 1967, Australians were asked to vote on two issues: the first concerned the balance of numbers in the Senate and House of Representatives; the second – the one for which the referendum is remembered – concerned the constitution’s inherent discrimination. The proposed changes to the constitution would bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians under
ls tai d De rgoe ba m e
federal rather than state laws and governance, which differed and could be highly inequitable. Importantly, it would also include them in the census, from which they had previously been excluded. Australians were united in their message to government. The vote was decisive, with 90.77 per cent of Australians making their desire for equality known by voting “yes”. As a result, amendments to sections 51 and 127 of the constitution came into effect in August 1967.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands, WA 6799
The sap of the Sapodilla tree is the origin of chewing gum.
On Home Island, in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, many locals maintain their own fruit gardens. These gardens typically contain bright orange drinking coconuts and red bananas, as well as the four colourful fruits featured on these bright and cheerful stamps. The small round fruit of the West Indian lime is yellow when ripe,
but is often picked when still green. As its name suggests, the pink bell-shaped rose apple (also known as apple guava) has a distinct rose flavour. Sapodilla is a soft brown fruit with a very sweet vanilla flavour. When slightly unripe, breadfruit is much like potato. Cocos locals like to cut it into chips and fry it in oil.

Henry Lawson was often referred to as the "Poet of the People".
The stamps in this issue depict two pieces of Henry Lawson’s short fiction: the well-known “The Drover’s Wife” and the lesser known “Mitchell: A Character Sketch”. The stories, which are conveyed through emblematic scenes, represent two modes of Lawson's writing – a traditional narrative and a character sketch. The son of immigrant gold prospector Niels Hertzberg (Peter) Larsen and Louisa Lawson, Henry was born on 17 June 1867 in Grenfell, New South Wales. He was the eldest sibling and a fairly unhappy child, due in part to deafness that resulted from illness. Lawson said that his partial deafness affected not just his childhood but his entire life; it made him inward-turning and most likely drove his compulsion to write. Lawson was known as the “Poet of the People”, a quintessentially Australian voice in our early literary culture. He is
remembered more for his stories than his verse, though he did publish many poems, including the notable “Andy’s Gone with Cattle” and “Faces in the Street”. Lawson’s writing was distinctly of his place and time, his sketches expressing certain archetypes and images of Australia. Written in the two decades either side of Federation, his characters reflected a national sentiment that expressed both specificity and a distance from Britain. Lawson’s narratives are focused and incisive – often character sketches – crafted through direct language, short sentences, and the distinctly accented dialogue of his characters. His stories summon rich imagery and convey carefully wrought encounters. The themes that often structure his stories are stoicism in the face of rural hardship, poverty in the city, human resourcefulness and republicanism. So too does gender take a central place.

All four plants featured on these stamps are endemic to Australia.
Succulents are a popular choice of plant for gardens. Perfect for low-water environments, their bold forms and adaptability to pots also make them ideal for small spaces. Their hardiness means they require minimal care and many species are easy to cultivate from cuttings. Australians are, however, much more familiar with exotic succulents, available through nurseries, than they are with our native varieties. This stamp issue showcases four of Australia’s 400 or so succulent species, plants that have adapted to dry conditions over thousands of years by developing the ability to store water in the tissues of their leaves, stems or trunks. The circular leaves of Portulaca cyclophylla reflect the gravelly habitat in which it is often found, the textured
upper surface providing a camouflage effect. The plant’s large, showy blooms have an extended central stigma. Tecticornia verrucosa is a low, bushy perennial shrub that grows to around 55 centimetres in height. This unusually formed plant comprises multisegmented stems that function photosynthetically like leaves. The mostly prostrate annual Calandrinia creethae radiates rosette-like to a diameter of around 80 centimetres, with trailing stems. Its leaves vary in colour and the flowers are pink and/or white.
The perennial Gunniopsis quadrifida is a low-growing shrub that reaches around 50 centimetres in height. It has rounded linear, greenish leaves and its fleshy flowers open up with four leaf-like outer “petals” and white to cream centr es. MANAG DESIGN
