Jewel Beetles Dirk Hartog's Landing: 400 Years Norfolk Island Seabirds AAT Ice Flowers SCM Endangered Wildlife A Century of Service: Vietnam War Art of Cocos (Keeling) Islands
Dear Collectors
Welcome to the September edition of the Stamp Bulletin, in which we introduce our special stamp issue to celebrate Stamp Collecting Month. The subject this year draws attention to the plight of seven endangered faunal species and the issue coincides with the centenary celebrations of Sydney’s Taronga Zoo.

One new stamp issue for September comprises two striking se-tenant pairs. The magnificent jewel beetle displays bright, iridescent colours, and these have been captured in the illustrations for the stamps. We mark, with a single stamp, the landing of Dirk Hartog on an island off the Western Australian coast in 1616. His unintended landing was the first recorded of a European ship on the west of the continent. We also release the first Norfolk Island stamp issue by Australia Post, following the 1 July changes. Norfolk Island seabirds shows two species found in and around the coastal waters of the territory all year round. We look forward to reflecting distinct aspects of Norfolk Island through our stamp issue program.

Little is known about the natural occurrence of intricate patterns formed by ice on the glass surfaces of Australian Antarctic bases. The AAT Ice Flowers stamp issue presents close ups of four amazing and dramatic "flowers". In October we continue a series of stamp issues that focus on Australia’s military involvement in conflict since the Great War. This year we mark the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, a decisive victory for Australian troops. The war would have a lasting influence on political and public opinion in Australia. Don’t forget to order your Gold Medallists Collection.

Adult jewel beetle species generally live from between one day and two weeks
Just over 1,280 (of around 15,000) Buprestidae species are found in Australia, spanning more than 80 genera. They are commonly known as “jewel beetles”, due to their spectacular and iridescent appearance. Their colour changes depending on the angle of the light and doesn’t fade, which is how jewel beetles retain their jewel-like sparkle, even after they die. During the warmer months they are often seen on the flowers of native trees and shrubs, in various forests, woodlands and desert environments throughout Australia. Most adult jewel beetles are nectar feeders, drinking from tea-tree and eucalyptus flowers, but some are leaf feeders. Jewel beetles are relatively small. Though many jewel beetles are under 20 millimetres, they can range in size from three to 80 millimetres.
They have an elongated body shape, large eyes, short antennae and a short head, which fits tightly into their thorax. Some jewel beetles, when disturbed or feeling threatened, will tuck their antennae and legs into their body and drop to the ground, as a defence mechanism. There are four bright and colourful Australian jewel beetle species featured in this stamp issue: Stigmodera gratiosa (from Western Australia), Castiarina klugii (found in NSW and parts of Victoria), Temognatha alternata (found on the north-east coast of Queensland) and Julodimorpha bakewellii (found within New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia). The life-like illustrations, by Owen Bell, were based on jewel beetle specimens found within the natural history collection of Museum Victoria.

The map on the stamp is by Hessel Gerritsz, Chart of the Malay Archipelago, 1618. The dish is reproduced from the original in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
A foundation myth of Australia is that Captain James Cook “discovered” the continent in 1770 when he landed at Botany Bay. However, numerous explorers, including several Dutch seamen from the Dutch East India Company (VOC), had already made landfall on the great southern continent. These included Willem Janszoon, who arrived on the western shore of Cape York in 1606 and the western Australian coast in 1618. In 1623, another VOC expedition under Jan Carstensz landed in northern Australia, and in 1642 Abel Tasman made landfall in Tasmania.
its way after setting out from Holland for Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. This unintentional landing made the Eendracht the second recorded European ship to visit the Australian continent and the first to arrive on the western coast. Two days later, before leaving what is now called Dirk Hartog Island, Hartog left a pewter dish inscribed with an account of his visit fixed to a wooden post at a location now called Cape Inscription. The Eendracht then sailed north-east, charting the Western Australian coastline, before eventually arriving in Batavia on 14 December 1616.
On 25 October 1616, captain Dirk Hartog of the Dutch East India ship Eendracht made landfall at an island off the coast of Shark Bay, Western Australia. Hartog’s ship had lost
The painting of the Eendracht on the stamp is by Western Australian Adriaan de Jong and is based on early 17th-century Dutch paintings and documents.

Norfolk Island NSW 2899
This is the first Australian produced Norfolk Island stamp issue.
Norfolk Island, an external Australian territory located in the Pacific Ocean around 1,400 kilometres east of the Australian mainland, has a rich cultural and natural history. These stamps feature two of the more than 20 species of seabirds that can be observed from coastal areas of the island. The spectacular Red-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda roseotincta) has two bright scarlet tail quills and performs
acrobatic aerial courtship displays. The sub-species found on Norfolk Island has plumage suffused with pink. The Masked Booby (Sula dactylatra fullagari) is named for the small black mask around its large yellow or yellowishgreen beak. The smaller islands of Nepean and Phillip and the smaller islets off the Norfolk coastline are important breeding habitats for most of Norfolk Island’s seabirds.

At nearly six million square kilometres, the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) is the largest part of the continent of Antarctic claimed by any nation. The region was placed under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1933 and its three year-round stations, Mawson, Davis and Casey, are administered by the Hobart-based Australian Antarctic Division. The ice flowers or ice ferns represented on these stamps are the names given to the intricate ice patterns that form on glass at AAT stations

throughout the winter months. These icy wonders are created when humid air meets a sub-zero glass pane or window. As winter temperatures frequently fall below -40 ° C, they are a common occurrence in Australia’s stations. The icy patterns seem to grow like plants and resemble ferns or flowers, hence their name. Dust and other matter present on the glass can change the way these formations occur. For instance, droplets of water melted by the sun on the inside of a double-glazed window can be transformed into flowery marvels by ice forming overnight.

Endangered Wildlife

September–October 2016
This stamp issue represents endangered animals that are part of current zoo and/or other conservation programs in Australia. These animals are at risk of extinction and are classified as either Endangered or Critically Endangered according to Australian and international measures. Three animals are exotic and four are native. The large definitive stamp, representing the Southern Corroboree Frog Pseudophryne corroboree, commemorates the centenary of Taronga Zoo in NSW, which has breeding programs for this rare frog. At just 2.5–3cm in length, this small, brightly coloured amphibian is one of the world’s rarest frogs. The frog was so named because its striped appearance was thought to resemble the ceremonial markings Indigenous Australians paint on their bodies in preparation for a corroboree. The carnivorous Snow Leopard Panthera uncia syn. Uncia uncia is a large cat native to mountain ranges of central and south Asia at altitudes of 3,000 to 4,500 metres. These cats are rarely seen because they inhabit harsh terrain with an extreme climate and are distributed across a range of over two million square kilometres across 12 countries. Listed as Endangered on the IUCN List of Threatened Species, it is estimated that there are currently anywhere between 4,000 and 6,500 individuals in the wild. The Asian Elephant Elephas maximus used to roam over most of Asia, but is now
restricted to just 15 per cent of its original range. The population has declined by at least 50 per cent over the last 60–75 years. The most recent estimate of the global population is 41,430. Asia’s largest terrestrial mammal reaches up to 6.4 metres in length and 3 metres at the shoulder.

The Western Lowland Gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla is a large primate native to the rainforests of central Africa, specifically in lowland forest and swamp forest from sea level to about 1,600 metres. Gorillas are mainly herbivorous. Their staple foods are pith, shoots and leaves. They also eat many species of fruit. It is difficult to estimate numbers, as they inhabit some of Africa’s densest and most remote rainforests. The total population is thought to be up to 100,000 individuals but is decreasing.

One of the world’s rarest and most endangered species, the Orange-bellied Parrot Neophema chrysogaster, is on the brink of extinction. It is listed as Critically Endangered under the EPBC Act and on the IUCN Red List. This migratory bird is endemic to southern Australia and breeds only in coastal south-west Tasmania spending its winters in coastal Victoria
and South Australia. The bird is around 21 centimetres in length. The Northern Quoll Dasyurus hallucatus is a small, omnivorous marsupial that once occurred across extensive areas of northern Australia. It has now contracted to only isolated populations. The smallest of the four Australian species of quoll, the Northern Quoll weighs up to 1.2 kilograms. It has a pointy snout and reddish brown fur with a cream underside. It has white spots on its back and rump and a long, unspotted tail.

This stamp issue features graphic illustrations of two iconic Australian animals against a backdrop of native foliage. The Playtpus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) and the Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) are both egg-laying mammals, known as monotremes (from the animal order Monotremata). Monotremes share similarities with other placental mammals; they are warm-blooded, covered in hair and produce milk for their young. But there are also differences, including a lack of teeth as adults. The Platypus is a semi-aquatic mammal found in freshwater environments within the eastern states of Australia, including Tasmania, and on Kangaroo Island. Its dense fur serves as insulation, and its broad, flat,
duck-like bill helps it to detect the electrical fields of its prey. The diet of the Platypus includes crustaceans, worms and tadpoles. There are two genera of Echidna still in existence – the longbeaked Zaglossus (three species) and one species of Tachyglossus – the Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus). It is the Short-beaked Echidna that is found widely throughout Australia (as well as in parts of New Guinea). The Short-beaked Echidna eats mainly ants and termites, and uses its snout and claws to find food. Echidnas are covered in both fur and spines, the spines serving as a protective mechanism for this shy creature.

This issue is the third in a series focusing on conflicts involving Australian troops since World War I. The Vietnam War (1955–75) was fought between communist North Vietnam and American-backed South Vietnam. Australia entered the war in 1962 to help USA and its allies, initially sending 30 military advisers. In 1965 Australia sent a battalion and in 1966, a task force. Australian troops did not withdraw until 1971; it was to be our longest conflict of the 20th century. In the Field This stamp features a well-known photograph of Australian servicemen taken on 26 August 1967 and shows members of 5 Platoon, B Company, 7th in the Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, just north of the village of Phuoc Hai, on the road leading to Dat Do. Long Tan Cross This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, which occurred in a rubber plantation in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, on 18 August 1966. It was a decisive victory for the soldiers of the 1st Australian Task Force, who were outnumbered by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese units by 108 to between 1,500 and 2,500. Aid and Recreation Australian troops undertook civil action during the war, including medical and dental aid, construction work, agricultural
assistance and education to the Vietnamese people. The army delivered some 253 aid projects between 1967 and 1971. Opposition and Withdrawal The National Service Scheme required many young Australian men to serve compulsory combat duty in Vietnam, and was widely opposed. By 1970 and 1971 our involvement in the war was the cause of widespread social and political dissent. Commemoration For decades many Vietnam veterans felt vilified by the Australian public for their participation in the war. In recent years there has been increasing acknowledgement and respect for their service and sacrifice. Vietnam Veterans' Day, celebrated every year on 18 August throughout Australia, commemorates the Battle of Long Tan and those who served during the Vietnam War.

Art of
Cocos (Keeling) Islands
This stamp issue celebrates creative culture on Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The Big Barge Art Centre, housed in a restored former working barge, is a local hub for fostering traditional and non-traditional art-making. Two of the centre’s recent community projects are Art Adrift and Art Afloat, the works of which express a vital connection with place, responding to the ebb and flow
of life on the islands. In the long tradition of beachcombing, the artists have gleaned their materials from the shoreline, refashioning the flotsam to give it new meaning. While the artworks reflect the rhythms of island life – boats and sea floats, for example – they also respond to the pressing environmental problem of detritus borne across the waters on ocean currents.

Tallent shines through
6841501 Jared Tallent Gold Medallist sheetlet of 10 $10
Add to your 2012 Gold Medallists Collection
History was rewritten this year when it was announced that Jared Tallent, the three-time Olympic medallist from Ballarat in Victoria, would be awarded gold for his 50km walk in the London 2012 Olympic Games. This followed the disqualification of Russian athlete, Sergey Kirdyapkin. To commemorate the special gold medal award and ceremony
in Melbourne, Australia Post released a gold medallist stamp in a
sheetlet of 10. Jared Tallent joins fellow 2012 gold-winning Olympians
Tom Slingsby, Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie, Melanie
Schlanger, Sally Pearson, Anna Meares, Iain Jensen, Nathan Outteridge,
Jacob Clear, David Smith, Tate Smith, Murray Stewart, Malcom Page
and Mathew Belcher.
