As many people around the world get set to welcome in the Chinese New Year, we release our Lunar New Year stamp issue. This first issue of the year – part of a series from renowned stamp designer Dani Poon – makes a beautiful emissary for sending greetings and gifts to family and friends.
In January, we also present Waterfalls, our second stamp issue for the Australian territory of Norfolk Island. In February, we launch the issue Australian Jetties, celebrating some of the charming wooden structures that dot our extensive coastline, serving fishermen and pleasure -craft users alike.
In 2017 we celebrate 20 years of the Australia Post Australian Legends Award, during which we’ve honoured some remarkable individuals. The award, which was introduced in 1997, has

The prepaid envelopes and stamp pack can be used together as a New Year Greeting.
According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the Year of the Rooster runs between 28 January 2017 and 15 February 2018. For Chinese people around the world, Lunar New Year is not only a time of renewal, but also a time for family dinners, exchanging gifts and enjoying public festivals and celebrations. The flamboyant Rooster is the tenth sign of the Chinese Zodiac. The Rooster is considered persistent and reliable, especially as they are the announcers of the new dawn.
1920142 Minisheet $4
Plus, according to Chinese legend, it was the Rooster that coaxed a hiding sun back into the sky and returned warmth to the world. Those born under the Rooster sign are often confident, observant, resourceful and courageous. The honest and hard-working Rooster likes to be surrounded by others. Britney Spears, Cate Blanchett and former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd were all born in the Year of the Rooster.

Norfolk Island
Waterfalls
Cascade Creek is one of Norfolk Island’s few permanent streams. Along with its tributaries, its catchment area covers almost one-fifth of the island and is an important home for native wetland flora and fauna. When it rains, high flows produce two main waterfalls: Cockpit Waterfall and Cascade Creek Falls.
Cockpit Waterfall is located inland, around 100 metres from the sea. Also known as Cockpit Falls, it is located within Cascade Reserve, an area of more than 30 hectares along the northern coast of Norfolk Island. Cascade Creek flows past Cockpit to Cascade Bay, resulting in Cascade Creek Falls.

January–February 2017
Melbourne 2017 committee news For the second time in 30 years Australia will host a FIAP (Federation on Inter-Asian Philately) international stamp exhibition. The Melbourne 2017 exhibition will offer Australian collectors the opportunity to view competitive philatelic exhibits from some 20 countries of the Oceania and Asia regions. The exhibition will be held at the Caulfield Racecourse Function Centre, Gate 23, Station Street, Caulfield East, from 30 March to 2 April 2017, with two floors and 8,000sqm of floor space. In excess of 70 Australian and international stamp and coin dealers will be attending, with material for sale from all over the world. A number of Australian and overseas auction houses will also be on hand to offer advice and appraisals. For coin enthusiasts, a number of Australian coin dealers will attend, along with the Perth Mint. Our major sponsor, Australia Post, will have a centrepiece stand just in from the venue entrance. It will act as the gateway into the postal administrations portal of the exhibition on the ground floor. Collectors will be able to purchase an array of official Australia Post philatelic products and have special postmarks applied. Posting products and facilities will also be on hand.
The layout of the exhibition venue will cover two floors. Australia Post, overseas postal administrations and dealers will be situated on the ground floor. There will be 1,200 frames of exhibits located on the upper level; 1,000 of these are competitive frames from Australia and Asian nations. World-class exhibits from all philatelic classes will be represented, including traditional, postal history, thematic philately, open and youth. A further exhibit of 200 frames of material from the members of the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria will also be on display. The society will be celebrating 125 years since its inception. A dedicated collector and youth corner will be operating for young collectors and novice exhibitors. All literature entries will also be available for examination. Two meeting rooms will provide a venue for various societies and groups over the four days, and visitors will be welcome to join them. The function highlight of Melbourne 2017 will be the awards dinner. This will be held at the Melbourne Aquarium on the Saturday evening. The ticket order form is available via the Melbourne 2017 website. The committee looks forward to meeting many of you at the event in March!
You can support Melbourne 2017 by becoming a member of the Patrons Club or the Supporter Group. You can also purchase various philatelic show souvenirs through the online shop of the Melbourne 2017 website.

The heart and the red rose have long been symbols of steadfastness and devotion. The 13th century French poem Roman de la Rose identified the rose with romantic passion and in 1794, Scotland’s bard,
Robert Burns, famously compared his sweetheart to this exquisite bloom. This stamp issue introduces new designs for social mail users and event organisers.

Jetties dot our coastline and service fisherman and pleasure craft users.
Many of the countless jetties and piers that punctuate Australia’s coastline and waterways were originally built to moor vessels transporting goods and passengers. While some have since fallen into disuse, others are still popular for recreational fishing, diving, snorkelling and other tourist activities. Busselton Jetty, located on Geographe Bay in Western Australia, is the longest wooden jetty in the world, originally built for the transportation of timber. A railway now carries tourists to an underwater observatory at the end of this historic jetty.
A jetty at Tumby Bay on the Spencer Gulf in South Australia was first constructed in 1874 to facilitate the shipping of anticipated supplies of copper from nearby Burrawing Mine. The current jetty was constructed in 1908–09 and is now a well-known fishing spot and scuba diving destination. The picturesque jetty on secluded Shelley Beach lies near the resort town of Portsea on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. The small jetty near Kincumber, New South Wales, is situated between Kincumber and Davistown on the Brisbane Water, an estuary in the Central Coast region north of Sydney.

75th Anniversary of the bombing of
Darwin PSE
On 19 February 1942, mainland Australia was attacked for the first time when Japanese forces mounted two air raids on Darwin. The first attack, which occurred just before 10am and lasted 25 minutes, involved hits on shipping, infrastructure, military and civil aerodromes and the city of Darwin. In the second raid, which began around 11.45am, the Royal Australian Air Force base was bombed. The attacks killed around 250 allied personnel and civilians and several hundred were wounded. Many of Darwin’s civilian population fled, fearing imminent invasion, however the Japanese aim was only to destroy Darwin’s potential as a base for a counter-offensive in the event of their invasion of Timor. In the following months there were 97 air attacks on northern Australia, including 64 on Darwin, before Japanese forces were pushed back.
