Dear Collectors
Welcome to a special edition of the Stamp Bulletin as final preparations for the 2017 Melbourne Stamp Exhibition in March are well underway. We extend an invitation to all our readers to come along and see what’s new in the world of philately.

All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps should be made in writing to: Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 mailorder@auspost.com.au
The atmosphere of this international stamp exhibition will be exciting for collectors and casual enthusiasts, and there’ll be lots to see and do. The Australia Post stand will offer a functioning post office, postmarking facilities, a designer gallery and the latest stamp issues and collectable material. There’ll be daily releases and limited editions, and also special exhibits and collections for your interest.
Philatelic material using this theme will be a feature of the Melbourne 2017 Stamp Exhibition.
The city of Melbourne has a lot to offer visitors while you’re here. With its mix of traditional and contemporary architecture, great restaurants and cafes, museums, art galleries and renowned public gardens there’s a lot to see. You’ll find more information about the exhibition throughout this edition, including some of the special interest exhibits and products available at the event.
Other featured stamp issues are the colourful AAT: East Antarctic Deep Sea Creatures released in early March, a celebration of the Queen’s birthday, and the fourth installment in our World War One series. WWI: 1917 commemorates the first flights by the Australian Flying Corps over France and the participation of Australian mounted forces in the advance into Palestine. The stamp issue also reflects on the appalling conditions in the battlefields of Europe and the support our forces received from back home.
The first stamp issue in this edition sparkles with natural beauty. Rare Beauties presents some of the natural gemstones housed by the Australian Museum in Sydney.

This year we celebrate anniversaries of the birth years of two outstanding Australian artists, Sir Arthur Streeton (1867–1943) and Sir Sidney Nolan (1917–1992). The stamps in this issue represent a well-known work by each artist together with a photographic portrait.

Throughout human history gemstones have been valued and used for personal adornment and ritual practice. As well as being objects cherished for their intrinsic beauty, gemstones have been – and continue to be – valued as symbols of wealth and status. Over the ages, the cutting of gemstones has evolved from a limited practice into a complex art that uses sophisticated technology to reveal a mineral’s hidden beauty.

The gemstones shown in the stamp designs are in the collection of the Australian Museum, in Sydney. The golden sapphire and the pink diamond represent precious gemstones that are cut and polished as possible centrepieces for exquisite jewellery. The rhodonite and the fluorite exemplify stones that are valued as collector stones, rarities transformed by lapidaries into singular specimens for the pleasure of gem specialists.

This year marks the birth anniversaries of two great Australian artists, Sir Arthur Streeton (1867–1943) and Sir Sidney Nolan (1917–1992). Alongside fellow Australian Impressionist artists, Streeton endeavoured to depict the unique qualities and intense light of the Australian landscape. A leading figure of Melbourne’s Heide Circle of modernist artists, Nolan’s colourful, expressionist works included interpretations of the Australian landscape and iconic figures like Ned Kelly and Burke and Wills. The stamps represent a work by each artist together with a photographic portrait. Streeton was a member of the Heidelberg School of painters. Influenced by the French Impressionists, these artists painted outdoors and aimed to create a new type of Australian art.
The oil on canvas work, Near Heidelberg, now in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, was painted at Eaglemont, then on the outskirts of Melbourne, in 1890. With a blue and golden palette evoking a warm, sunny day, it shows well-dressed men and women walking down to the Yarra River. Nolan is represented by his enamel on composition board Footballer, 1946 also in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, which shows an Australian rules footballer before a crowd of fans. The jersey colours are intentionally generic, but the figure is thought to represent a St Kilda player, although opinion varies as to his identity. With its bold colours and forms the painting is characteristic of Nolan’s expressionist realism of the 1940s.

Exhibition standholders and special exhibits
INTERNATIONAL
STAMP EXHIBITION
The Melbourne 2017 International Stamp Exhibition will feature the largest collection of philatelic and numismatic material on show in Australia since 2013. In addition, on the first floor there is a dedicated space for youth and young adults that includes stamp boards and other activities. There will be 70 standholders on the ground floor of the Rupert Clarke Grandstand venue. These comprise the dealers, auctioneers, mints and postal administrations attending, and free valuations are available from leading national and international dealers. A full listing of standholders can be found on the exhibition website: melbourne2017.com.au. More than 20,000 pages of competitive exhibits from 18 countries will be on display on the level above the standholder area. Take time to view these exhibits ahead of the competition result announcements.
Collections on show The exhibition will feature rare philatelic material from the Australia Post National Philatelic Collection and the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria Collection. A special feature is a non-competitive exhibit ‘ROYALPEX”, involving at least 200 frames for members of the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria (RPSV). The event coincides with the 125th anniversary of the RPSV and continues a tradition of non-competitive exhibits by the society – centenary (1992) and 75th anniversary (1967).

The Australian Antarctic Territory is located 3,000 kilometres to the south of the Australian continent. The huge continent of Antarctica occupies 13.5 million square kilometres and of this area, the vast Australian Antarctic Territory makes up around six million square kilometres. This region, almost entirely covered with permanent ice and snow, is equivalent to around 75% of the land mass of Australia. The AAT was placed under Australian administration in 1933 and today Australia maintains three permanently manned scientific stations on its Antarctic

territories and a fourth on subantarctic Macquarie Island. East Antarctica makes up two-thirds of the Antarctic continent and includes the 5.9 million square kilometres of the Australian Antarctic Territory. The East Antarctic ice sheet flows off the Antarctic continent into the surrounding Southern Ocean. Many species, including penguins, seals, seabirds, corals and fish rely on this pristine environment for survival. This stamp issue features several deep sea creatures that contribute to the unique biodiversity of the waters off East Antarctica.

This year also marks the Queen’s sapphire jubilee, which recognises her 65-year reign.
In 2017, the Queen will turn 91. The Queen’s Birthday 2017 stamp issue celebrates this incredible milestone. In the domestic base rate stamp, we show the Queen greeting the crowd during a day of public engagements with Prince Philip. On this occasion, Her Majesty is visiting the Broadway Theatre, situated in the London borough of Barking and Dagenham. This year will also mark the 70th anniversary of the marriage of Princess Elizabeth and His Royal Highness Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, which took place on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey, London.
FIRST DAY OF ISSUE 4 APRIL 2017 ELIZABETH SA 5112
The international rate stamp features Her Majesty and Prince Philip, in recognition of the longevity of their relationship. The couple are riding in the Royal Procession as part of the prestigious five-day horseracing event Royal Ascot. First introduced in 1825 by King George IV, the Royal Procession signals the beginning of each day’s racing. A royal carriage procession, headed by the Queen and Prince Philip, travels up the straight mile in a circuit, transporting the Royal family to the Royal Box. In 2013, The Queen’s own horse, Estimate, won the prestigious Gold Cup race.

This stamp issue is the fourth in the five-year series commemorating World War I. It represents some of the main events of 1917, most notably the Third Battle of Ypres. In this series of actions in Flanders, Australian troops were effective for their part in taking ground, but Ypres was a costly offensive, with 38,000 Australian lives lost. The Australian Flying Corps made its first flights over France in 1917, the war in the air expanding from the Middle East to the Western Front. In the east in 1917, Australia’s mounted forces, which had already secured the Suez Canal, participated in the advance into Palestine, fighting in

actions at Gaza, Beersheba and Jerusalem. This stamp issue also represents aspects that shaped Australia’s broader contribution to the war. Bitter weather and incessant rains in Europe turned battlefields into lakes of mud, and soldiers suffered terribly from fungal “trench foot” and freezing conditions. On the home front, an army of women and care agencies, such as the Red Cross and the Comforts Fund, knitted, sewed, fundraised and packaged goods to support the troops.
