Over the last 12 months we have celebrated a number of Australian cultural and sporting milestones, and released stamp issues that showcase Australia’s natural beauty and wildlife. The 2012 Collection of Australian Stamps brings all these issues together and is a significant addition to Australian stamp collections. In this edition of the Bulletin we are also able to bring you full details of a new stamp issue that will sit within the Australian Legends program: Australia Post Sporting Legends. The first issue of this new series was released on 12 October 2012, as advised on the cover of the last edition, and I hope all collectors made the most of this opportunity. Details of the first Sporting Legend could not be given prior to the day of release because the formal announcement is made at a dinner held each year to recognise the recipient. In this edition we present two Christmas stamp issues, Christmas and Christmas Island Christmas, with the first of these offering a religious celebration and also a nostalgic look at how Christmas has been celebrated through the years by the singing of Christmas carols. With their origins dating back to before the Middle Ages, carols were

originally dances accompanied by singing. They later developed into choral celebrations of the Christmas story, with groups travelling from house to house, and in some towns this is still part of the festivities. The Christmas Island Christmas stamp issue continues to bring to collectors the delightful Christmas Island characters celebrating the festive season in their own way. This year Australia will host the 2012 World Bowls Championships in Adelaide, and an issue of two stamps is being released to recognise the long tradition of the sport here in Australia. The sport has grown in popularity over the years for those in younger age groups and is promoted as being suitable for just about anyone. I’m sure we all know someone who participates, and this is not surprising with around 2,000 active clubs in Australia. Don’t miss a special coverage of next year’s Australia 2013 international exhibition on page 14 along with available show souvenirs. I’m looking forward to meeting many of you there. Happy collecting

Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

1743002 First day cover

This stamp issue is part of the Australia Post Australian Legends program. Created in partnership with the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Sporting Legends issue honours an exceptional Australian athlete who has made a significant contribution to our sporting culture. Since its founding in 1985, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame has inducted more than 500 individuals, each year elevating one Member to Legend. In 2012, Susie O’Neill OAM, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002, joins a group of 33 elite athletes in being named a Sport Australia Hall of Fame Legend.

Technical details

Susie’s international swimming career was launched at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, where at just 16 she scooped both gold and silver in the pool. It was here that Susie set the tone for her future, for she was to return from every international event in which she competed as a decorated athlete. At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur her stellar performance resulted in eight medals, six of which were gold – setting a record for gold at a single Commonwealth Games.

The 1992 Olympic Games were the first at which Susie competed. Her performance in Barcelona earned her a bronze medal in the 200-metres butterfly. Dubbed “Madame Butterfly” in Atlanta four years later, she took gold in this event. She also won silver in the 4 x 100-metres medley relay and bronze in the 4 x 200-metres freestyle relay. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, she took her total Olympic medal count to eight, securing one gold medal for the 200-metres freestyle and three silver medals for the 200-metres butterfly, the 4 x 100-metres medley relay and the 4 x 200-metres freestyle relay. This made her the first Australian woman to win gold in the pool in successive Olympics since Dawn Fraser. But it was at the trials for Sydney that this remarkable swimmer etched her name in sporting history, breaking the world record in the women’s 200-metres butterfly, which was set by the USA’s Mary T Meagher 19 years earlier. Besides Susie’s many medal triumphs in the pool, her contribution to Australian sport has been recognised through a range of honours. These include being named Female Olympian of the Year and attaining the AAF World Trophy in 1996; receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1997; being appointed to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in 2000, from which she stepped down in 2005; being inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2002; and becoming an honoree in the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2006.

Trimming the tree

1745142 Minisheet Located in the Indian Ocean some 2,600 kilometres north-west of Perth, Christmas Island is the sole peak of an underwater mountain range to rise above the ocean’s surface. The island was named by Captain William Mynors, who sailed the Royal Mary past it on Christmas Day 1643.

Issue highlights This delightful issue includes an illustrated minisheet.

Over recent years, the Christmas Island Christmas stamp issue has taken a humorous approach to linking the festive theme to the island’s name. This year artistic licence prevails, as Santa – aided by a Greater Frigatebird, a Green Turtle and Red Crabs – creates sculptures from the island’s granular sand. Joyfully wrapped gifts arrive by land and by air. This is the second in the series by Andrew Hopgood.

Issue highlights The stamps offer a variety of designs for those sending Christmas greetings. From the religious celebration of the birth of the Christ-child, to the childhood memories of Christmas caroling and Christmas Eve.

The traditional Christmas story is presented in two of the five stamps from this year’s Christmas stamp issue. These religious stamps are based on the Adoration of the Magi, a wool and silk tapestry in the Art Gallery of South Australia. The tapestry shows three richly garbed magi, or kings, offering their gifts of myrrh, frankincense and gold to the Christ child. Matthew’s gospel tells how the magi travelled afar from the east, and their origin is suggested by their turbans and embroidered clothing as well as by the dark skin colour of one of the kings. The Virgin and Child are seated on a mound of hay within the manger, while Joseph, pausing from his labour of wood chopping, witnesses the reverential scene. An attendant angel appears in the background, with the illuminating star held in his hands. All around there is a profusion of flowers, including the lily, rose, iris, periwinkle,

pansy and snowdrop, which are all acknowledged as symbols of the Virgin. The Adelaide tapestry was woven between 1900 and 1902 at the Merton Abbey Mills in London, England, and was sixth of 10 versions. It was expressly commissioned by the Adelaide collector The Hon. (later Sir) George Brookman and was acquired by the gallery in 1917. The other stamps in the issue are non-religious. The brightly coloured, celebratory subjects are suggestive of familiar Christmas carols “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”, “Jingle Bells” and “Ding Dong Merrily on High”. The style is deliberately naïve, intended to recall a child’s delight at Christmas time.

Issue highlights The stamp images were photographed by Joe Sabljak on the greens of the national office of Bowls Australia in Northcote, Melbourne. Bowls Australia is the national sporting organisation responsible for the leadership, development and management of lawn bowls in Australia. It is a not-for-profit organisation governed by a voluntary board. Bowls Australia’s members are the nine state and territory bowls associations.

Lawn bowls is one of Australia’s most popular sports, with more than 240,000 playing members in almost 2,000 bowling clubs throughout the country. Every year more than 490,000 people regularly participate in the sport, particularly in country areas, where clubs outnumber those in metropolitan areas by more than two to one. The first recorded game of lawn bowls in Australia took place in 1845 at the back of the Beach Tavern at Sandy Bay, Tasmania, between a Mr T Burgess and Mr F Lipscombe. The following year Australia’s first bowling club was established at Sandy Bay, alongside the Bowling Green Hotel. The club was short-lived, closing when the hotel was sold in 1853. The oldest Australian bowls club still in existence is the Melbourne Bowling Club, established in 1864.

The first formal bowling association in the world was established in Australia in 1880 – the New South Wales Bowling Association – followed soon after by the Victorian Bowling Association. Organised inter-colonial competition began in April 1880, with a match between New South Wales and Victoria at Kentville, New South Wales. Victoria was the winning side. The first ladies’ bowling association in the world was also Australian, the Victorian Ladies’ Bowling Association, founded in 1907. Lawn bowls attracts players from diverse backgrounds and age groups. In recent years the sport has become especially popular with younger people, many of whom number among our top players. This year Australia hosts one of this year’s premier bowling events, the 2012 World Bowls Championships which will take place in Adelaide from 24 November to 9 December.

10–15 May 2013

Australia 2013

Australia 2013 is a major philatelic event taking place in Melbourne – a six-day showcase of stamps and stamp collecting to enthral collectors, the general public and visitors to the city. This is the fourth world stamp exhibition for Australia, with the first being held in 1984. It will be an opportunity to see the best the stamp world has to offer.

Australia 2013 World Stamp Exhibition: just six short months to go

The exhibition opens on Friday 10 May and closes Wednesday 15 May 2013, and will be held at the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne. A highlight will be the celebration of the centenary of the 1913 Kangaroo and Map stamps, Australia’s first nationwide postage stamps. The release was to set the path for Australia to become a world leader in postage stamp production through technical and design innovation. World stamp exhibitions give the postal administration in the country hosting the event an opportunity to showcase new product and service releases. For instance, in 1999 the world saw the first personalised postage stamps at the Australia 99 World Stamp Expo. Released by Australia Post, the technology went on to be adopted for use by other postal administrations. In 2005 Australia Post made available to visitors attending Pacific Explorer a personalised booklet (Snapshot!), expanding the technology further.

Royal Exhibition Building postcard (250 numbered) $7.50

The organising committee has been working hard behind the scenes to make sure Australia 2013 is a success and leaves a lasting impression on everyone who attends. An army of volunteers from the Australian philatelic collecting fraternity is being organised at present to assist the committee with the various activities to take place throughout the show and to assist with visitor enquiries. One of the key features of a stamp exhibition is the competitive exhibits shown in display frames. At Australia 2013, about 54,000 album pages of competitive exhibits of the highest standard will be submitted by philatelists from around the globe. The Australia 2013 exhibition is being held under the patronage of the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie.

A highlight will be the Court of Honour, comprising a number of spectacular exhibits. Collectors are urged not to miss viewing these important works. With the gracious permission of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, selections of the Royal Philatelic Collection will be on view and, in keeping with the Kangaroo and Map stamp theme, the royal exhibit will feature early Australian Commonwealth stamps. King George V, who formed the Royal Philatelic Collection, purchased most of his Australian stamps in 1930 from Melbourne solicitor Bill Purves. The organisers expect about 110 trade stands to be operated by local and international stamp dealers, auction houses, postal administrations, mints and other stamp organisations. There will also be special children’s areas set aside, with activities designed to introduce them to the pleasures and the educational benefits of stamp collecting. As the major sponsor, Australia Post will have a large stand offering a comprehensive range of stamps and philatelic products, as well as other collectables. Visitors will also have the chance to meet Australia Post stamp designers over the six days.

Visit Australia 2013 minisheet (250 numbered) $15

Show highlights include the release of new stamp issues by Australia Post throughout the exhibition, including a commemoration of the 1913 Kangaroo and Map stamp. Further details of the program of stamp issue releases will be revealed closer to the event. If you happen to live in Victoria, attendance at Australia 2013 is a must for you, your family and your friends. And if you live interstate, consider making a visit to Melbourne to see this exhibition and the other great sights that Melbourne and Victoria have to offer. If you can manage it, try not to miss the opportunity to experience all the excitement of a world philatelic exhibition.
