Dear Collectors Welcome to the last edition of the Australian Stamp Bulletin for the year. No doubt like many of you, I find it hard to believe we have almost seen another year through. The first stamp issue in this edition may be on the Post Office shelves by the time you read this Stamp Bulletin, released in readiness for customers sending mail overseas. Details of Wilderness Australia were not available when the previous edition of the Bulletin went to print, so we introduce it here. For first day cover collectors and those wishing to obtain a first day of issue postmark, the availability date has been extended to meet collectors’ needs.

The final two stamp issues for the year mark the celebration of Christmas. The Christmas Island Christmas stamp designs have been illustrated by Gavin Ryan. This annual stamp issue is a popular choice for general-mail users wanting to send greeting cards with a secular and light-hearted theme. The stamp designs bring together Santa and creatures from Christmas Island, as they prepare for the festive season.
A secular representation of Christmas is also available through the Australian stamp program, with stamp designs depicting, popular symbols of the festive season. This year’s religious-themed stamps use an art form that can be traced back to ancient Rome. Scenes from the Bible, including the Nativity scene, adorn the windows of Christian churches around the world and were originally installed to allow daylight to illuminate buildings lacking sufficient light. In Europe, the art of stained glass reached its peak between 1150 and 1500, when magnificent windows were created for great cathedrals. Tourists flock to these buildings each year to view these magnificent works of art. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy festive season. Australia world-renowned natural assets include many regions of virtually untouched wilderness. This stamp issue, the second in a series, includes three areas noted for natural beauty and cultural significance.
The Blue Mountains National Park, located west of Sydney, is one of the country’s most frequently visited parks, and includes the Three Sisters rock formation. In 2000 the region was placed on the World Heritage List.
Judbarra/Gregory National Park, the largest in the Northern Territory, boasts spectacular ranges, gorges, birdlife and rock art, and incorporates the traditional lands of several Indigenous peoples.
Victoria’s Alpine National Park covers much of the higher areas of the Great Dividing Range, including Mount Bogong, subalpine woodland and the grasslands of the Bogong High Plains.
Australia’s wilderness areas continue to entice modern-day explorers to regions of unique and pristine natural beauty. 1818002

Christmas Island WA 6798
Christmas Island’s rugged coastline is comprised mostly of sea cliffs, with some narrow sandy or coral-shingled beaches. The island rises dramatically from the edge of the Java Trench in the Indian Ocean, with some of the longest drop-offs in the world. Captain William Mynors of the East India Company vessel the Royal Mary named Christmas Island when he sailed past it on Christmas Day in 1643. Christmas Island festive season stamps are traditionally a
light-hearted and humorous depiction of Father Christmas enjoying Christmas festivities on the island with the various creatures, including crabs and birds that the island is renowned for. All are busily preparing Christmas Island for seasonal activities, including gift giving. Crabs dressed in Santa hats join Father Christmas while he carries starfish to adorn the tree. A single reindeer, with a red crab perched on his nose, is watching with interest from afar.

This year’s religious stamps are based on stained-glass windows in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne. This imposing bluestone building is both the tallest and largest church building in Australia and one of the world’s largest Gothic revival 19th century churches— only St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York is comparable. As with medieval Gothic churches, St Patrick’s is embellished with many beautiful stained-glass windows depicting religious and Biblical scenes. Nearly all the windows were manufactured by the English company Hardman and Co.
The windows depicted on the stamps are in the Ladye Chapel situated in the chevet of the cathedral and show scenes from the Life of the Virgin, including the Nativity of Christ and the Flight into Egypt. The windows were fitted to the chapel in 1892. As an alternative to the religious theme, the festive and colourful contemporary stamps represent the familiar trappings and sentiments of Christmas celebration and recall techniques of paper cut design as well as snow crystals.
