Beautiful Butterflies Cocos (Keeling) Islands: Dolphins RSL 1916–2016 Nostalgic Fruit Labels AAT: Hurley's Journey, 1914–16
Dear Collectors Welcome to you all. I begin this Bulletin by expressing great sadness for the recent loss of a remarkable gentleman of philately. Max Stern was one of the most revered stamp dealers of the modern era, and for Australia Post the loss is significant. With this edition we remember Max and we honour his enormous contribution to Australian philately. Beautiful Butterflies leads our new releases this May. The stamp issue features one of the largest butterfly species; the Cairns Birdwing, from the swallowtail family, has a wingspan of up to 20 centimetres.

In 2016 we commemorate the centenary of the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL). Over the last 100 years the organisation has assisted Australia’s serving and exservice Defence Force personnel and their families through a number of support services. The RSL was also responsible for the implementation of the Anzac Day and Remembrance Day commemorations. Our second May issue marks this anniversary. I wonder how many of you remember the colourful and eye-catching fruit labels displayed on fruit boxes at suburban greengrocers. One of our June stamp issues features
australiapostcollectables.com.au
amazing label artwork from a bygone era. Also in June, we remember moments from Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial TransAntarctic Expedition, captured through the lens of Australian photographer Frank Hurley. With limited photographic equipment and under extreme conditions, this significant photographer recorded the endurance and unlikely survival of the expedition team. Australia Post will be attending, the international stamp exhibition in New York – World Stamp Show NY2016. We look forward to meeting, at the Australia Post stand, those of you able to attend the show. A range of items will be available, so please drop by and say “hello”.

Australia is home to more than 400 butterfly species.
Butterflies are part of the largest insect order, Lepidoptera, which literally means “scaled wings”. The two pairs of scaly membranous wings that butterflies possess is how they differ from all other insects. Their colourful, and sometimes detailed, patterns can serve many purposes, from blending in to their surroundings to attracting a mate. Four bright and beautiful butterflies are featured in this stamp issue. The Pale Triangle (Graphium eurypylus), the Chequered Swallowtail (Papilio demoleus) and the Cairns Birdwing (Ornithoptera euphorion) are all members of the swallowtail family. Swallowtails are typically large, boldly coloured and decorative and are named for the presence, in many species, of a tail on their hind wing. The Pale Triangle is part of the Graphium genus of swallowtails, of which only six of the almost
90 species occur in Australia. The Pale Triangle can be distinguished from the Blue Triangle (Graphium sarpedon) by the extra white spots in the black areas along the outside of its forewings. The large, striking Cairns Birdwing is found only in coastal areas of north-east Queensland. The female of the species is the largest butterfly found in Australia, with a wingspan of around 15 to 20 centimetres. The male of the species looks similar to the Richmond Birdwing (Ornithoptera richmondia), which is endemic to Australia and listed as Vulnerable in Queensland. The Bordered Rustic (Cupha prosope) is a medium-sized butterfly. It is seen in sunny areas, small clearings and along creeks, at the edges of thick rainforest in some coastal areas of New South Wales and Queensland.

Tribute to
Max Stern
Few people in the stamp world are better known than Max Stern, who died on 11 February 2016 in Melbourne, aged 94. Astonishingly, he was a stamp trader for almost 80 years. Everyone who knew him will have a story to tell, and to the philatelic staff at Australia Post he was a friend and adviser, and collaborated on some of our most successful projects. Max was just 13 when his father’s gift of an album of printed illustrations of world stamps sparked an interest that shaped the rest of his life. A few years later, the onset of WWII brought great personal loss and overwhelming sadness, but Max never lost his interest in stamps and his desire to be part of the philatelic fraternity.
Speaking no English on arrival in Melbourne,
Max and Eva Stern attended an Englishlanguage school – essential for their stamp business. In 1950, Max joined the Australian Stamp Dealers’ Association (now the Australasian Philatelic Traders’ Association) and within a few years served as its secretary and president. Max would also become an honorary life member. Many are unaware of Max’s great contribution to Australian philately through his work behind the scenes. He was part of the initial concept group for founding the Australian Philatelic Federation. He was a driving force in organised philately in Australia and encouraged our participation on the world stage. He worked with all 10 Australia Post Philatelic managers of the last 60 years, his assistance bringing many successes. He was instrumental in significant joint stamp issues for Australia, including those with Russia and the People's Republic of China. His contacts and philatelic influence in Europe and Asia were invaluable at a time when the political
atmosphere was one of mistrust, and some countries preferred isolation. He assisted with training staff at the Philatelic Bureau and Postal Training School in Melbourne, advising on all aspects of philately from the collector’s perspective and helping compose philatelic manuals. Max had a genuine love of people and wanted everyone to be a collector. Going to great lengths to encourage this led to his working with the Catholic chaplain at Victoria’s Pentridge Prison, Father John Brosnan (1919–2003). Max held stamp collecting workshops for inmates in the hope they might enjoy philately at times of despondency. His enthusiasm for promoting the hobby was tenacious. He was particularly proud of the Ampol Petroleum promotion in the mid-1960s, during which 70 million stamps were given away to petrol station customers. His effort in sourcing this quantity of stamps was phenomenal. He sold new issues from around the world to most of Australia’s stamp traders and collectors, and enjoyed talking to customers about their interests. He attributed his business success to “fast, uncomplicated, efficient and friendly service”. In 1999, he was appointed a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to philately. Max is survived by his daughters, Judy Seigel and Ruth Paneth, and will be greatly missed.

The RSL badge features images of servicemen and women taken from recruitment posters for the armed services from the 1940s and 1950s.
The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) is one of Australia’s oldest and most respected national organisations. Its primary mission is to ensure for the wellbeing, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and ex-service Defence Force members and their dependants. This includes caring for the sick and elderly; providing grants and scholarships; perpetuating close and kindly ties of friendship created by mutual service in the Australian Defence Force; preserving the memory of those who suffered and died for our nation; and promoting the defence of Australia. In the early days, the RSL was instrumental in organising Anzac Day and Remembrance Day commemorations. It also advocated for veterans’ entitlements, the protection of former battlefields and the rights of serving soldiers, sailors and airmen.
The League was initially established to care for the welfare of servicemen returning from the Great War (1914–18). In September 1916, a conference in Brisbane recommended the formation of The Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA) which included representation from Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. New South Wales was admitted in 1917, Western Australia in 1918 and the ACT in 1927. The name has undergone several changes; the current title was established in 1990. Since its foundation, the RSL has grown to 1,200 sub-branches Australia-wide with more than 170,000 traditional and affiliate members, making it the largest ex-service organisation in the country. The RSL’s motto is “The Price of Liberty is Eternal Vigilance”.

The designs of Australian fruit labels were heavily influenced by the orange crate labels of North America.
Expansion of primary production in early 20th century Australia was so rapid that supply far exceeded the needs of the domestic population. Australia became a major food exporter, particularly to Britain until well after World War II. Early means of identifying fruit for market was by stenciling wooden fruit cases, using metal stencils brushed with black paint. Details included the grower’s name as well as the type, size and grade of fruit. But as Australia’s fruit export industry expanded, so did the need for marketing of the fruit. While some continued with the use of stenciling only, others chose to add paper labels to promote their “brand”. Paper labels, pasted onto the end of wooden cases, formed part of the fruit industry landscape between the 1920s and 1970s, before the widespread use of cardboard
cartons. There were local market labels, grower labels and more, but the most colourful were the labels used for export. And while labels were used for various types of fruit, apple labels from the “apple isle” Tasmania were by far the most numerous. In addition to the State Library of Tasmania, one of the largest public collections of fruit labels is part of the Troedel Printing Archive in the State Library of Victoria. The sample books of lithographic printing firm Troedel and Cooper contain an amazing array of colourful designs. Three of the labels featured in this stamp issue are from that collection. The fourth is the Western Australian label for Paterson & Co., one of the largest shippers of apples and pears in the west from the labels era.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands WA 6799
Dolphins are cetaceans, which as a group also include whales and porpoises.
Visitors to the waters of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands may be lucky enough to see the three sociable and playful dolphin species featured in this stamp issue. The Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) is seen regularly in the inner lagoon, usually in groups. The species is similar in appearance to the Common Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), but is generally smaller, has a longer beak and develops spotting on the belly as a mature adult.
The Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris), usually seen in small groups, and also in the waters of the inner lagoon, has a very long, thin beak, with a distinctive dark grey back, grey flanks and white belly. The Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is slender with a long beak that protrudes sharply from its face. This species, easily distinguished from other dolphin species by a unique crisscross colour pattern on the top of its body, is sighted regularly in the deeper waters of the Pulu Keeling National Park lagoon.

Photographing the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition
This stamp issue features the work of one of Australia’s most celebrated documentary photographers, James Francis (Frank) Hurley (1885–1962). In the early 20th century, he visualised a largely unknown Antarctica for a fascinated public. While the stamp issue is part of the AAT program, the geography of its narrative is not part of what later became the Australian Antarctic Territory. Hurley’s passion for photography was matched by his desire for adventure. His photographs illustrate not only his technical and aesthetic skills under extreme conditions but also his talent for conveying the experience of being there. He achieved this through a practice that included straight and modified photographs, multiple-exposure stills, moving pictures and early colour photography.
A pioneer of polar photography, Hurley was invited to join Ernest Shackleton’s British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which set out to cross Antarctica by foot in 1914, from Vahsel Bay, on the Weddell Sea, to the Ross Sea. This stamp issue tells the tale of that ill-fated journey through the lens of Hurley. Despite having to abandon much of his specialist equipment and many glass-plate negatives when the ship, Endurance, was sent to its icy grave in October 1915, Hurley photographed the unfolding calamity. Left with only a pocket camera, a few rolls of film and 120 remaining glass-plate negatives, Hurley visualised a compelling narrative of extreme misfortune, remarkable endurance and survival against all odds.
