Your BEST SHOT As part of an ongoing article series, STAND presents tips, tricks and best practices to help you “STAND out” in your photography. In this issue, let’s talk about traveling with your dolls and shooting "on location". This summer, travel is making a well-deserved comeback after a long hiatus. One of the things I enjoy in photographing my dolls is taking them "on location". Whenever I have a trip planned, whether for business or pleasure, I try to leverage the location to get shots I might not normally be able to get at home. It also makes traveling extra fun to have some "doll time" built in. Here are some things to consider when traveling with your dolls: • First, think about where you are going and what kind of shots you want to achieve...are you going to the beach? To a park? To a famous monument? To Disney? Once you know the location, everything else will be easier to sort. I tend to do as much research as I can about a destination before I leave. This also includes taking a look at the weather forecast....all those sunny beach scenes you want can be ruined by a tropical depression coming your way. Pay attention to sunrise and sunset times, too. • Next, think about what equipment will you need. Sometimes this maybe dictated by how you are trave-ling (by air vs. by car), so you may be limited by luggage restrictions or you may simply not want to haul around multiple lenses, lighting, etc. while you are on vacation. But you should think about whether you will need a certain type of lens, whether you are shooting indoors or out, or if the reality is you will only be able to carry your cell phone on your trip. • After determining the above, it's time to consider which doll or dolls you will want to take with you. Some sculpts perfectly suit a particular setting...for example, if you are visiting an old castle or cemetery, a vampire sculpt may be your choice. A bustling cityscape may a great backdrop for a fashion doll. Size may also be a factor...frankly, it is a lot easier to travel with YOSDs than SDs...easier to travel with multiple dolls and (bonus!) easier to haul around. • Keeping your dolls safe in transit is also important. If you don't have one already, invest in a good travel case with good cushioning that can survive the bumps from running through an airport or journey through an x-ray machine. • Now comes the fun part! I like to plan out the scenes in advance and gather any props, clothing and accessories needed for the shoot. I put it all in a zip lock and tuck in my travel bag so it's not forgotten. Going to the beach? Gather up swimsuits and beach toys.
Deborah Hood, PhD Going to a park? Gather up outdoor attire, camping or sports equipment. The location itself will serve as the biggest "prop", but your extras can add a sense of realism and bring your photo to life. Remember, your images can be whatever you want them to be. Take a doll on your next outing and experiment with shooting on location. Shooting using backdrops can be fun, but there is nothing like the real deal! Most of all, have fun getting your best shot!
Sculpts: Little Ted and Tiny Ted by Liz Frost On Location at the U.S. Capital, Washington, DC Photo prep included selecting "casual" attire and shoes that would fit a patriotic theme and purchasing a tiny US Flag for the shot.
Sculpts: Little Ted and Tiny Ted by Liz Frost On Location at JAX Beach, Jacksonville, Florida Photo prep included gathering swimwear, beach toys as well as the resin sand castle for the shot. Planning also included scheduling the shoot at sunrise to leverage the sun and the scarceness of people on the beach. thestandmag.com
