// from the Editor I recently went to a local doll show in San Antonio and came across a book that stopped me in my tracks....it was “The Lonely Doll” by Dare Wright. Originally published in 1957, this book chronicles the journey of Edith, a sweet but lonely doll, and her teddy bear companions. Black and white photography captures each step in the doll’s journey--tea parties, shopping, and fun adventures. I have always thought of doll photography as something rather new, as an art form that emerged in the last couple of decades or so with the rise in popularity of BJDs and highend fashion dolls. But as I flipped through the pages, I began to reflect on this niche photography passion we all have. We know that dolls have been photographed since the invention of the camera, albeit in portraits or toy catalogs. But this book, perhaps even the first doll photography book ever published, captures more than just doll pictures. It is storytelling. As I looked at the poses she chose, props she used, and the humor she captured, I see similarities to photos I have taken myself. And, as I study her photos, I also get the impression that the author loved what she did. The book was being sold together with a repro of the doll, and I was delighted to whip out my money and take home a little piece of history. The challenge to our photographers for this issue was to show their interpretation of the theme, “Love is in the Air”, and as you’ll see, they stepped up to the challenge. Love has been captured in images that portray deep affection, tenderness and even intimacy. I thank our contributors for their wonderful images which will be sure to delight you as you turn each page. I hope that you will not only see themes of love in the photos, but also feel the passion our photographers have for their craft to be able to create the beautiful images they do. Like the pioneer Dare Wright, it takes a special love to make an image come to life and I thank our photographers for sharing that love with us. On a last note, it is a tough time for many right now, and my mind is on our friends in the Ukraine and Russia who are in the middle of the conflict. My love and hope for safety and peace is with them. Let love be in the air for all!
