I adore Fall! And this year has been especially magnificent. I had an opportunity to drive from Boise to Seattle in October and WOW, I have never seen color that vibrant! It is my very great pleasure to welcome Deborah Hood as the STAND’s Co-Editor. I am looking forward to seeing how her expertise and love of dolls and photography will help explode the magazine to a new level. In this issue, we take a look at the things that awe and delight, certainly the upcoming holidays are a part of that picture.
Enjoy!
Dorothy The opportunity to collaborate with Dorothy on The STAND is truly a dream come true! What I like About BJD Events Allison Pilgrim Hernandez
STAND asked BJD collector and vlogger (video blogger), Allison Pilgrim Hernandez, about her thoughts on attending BJD events such as conventions and meetups. Here’s what she had to say.... The best thing about BJD events is meeting friends in person. We chat a lot online and interact through the various groups on Facebook, but there’s nothing like giving that friend a great big hug! Meeting the artists face-to-face is also very exciting! They share a lot of things in person that they don’t share online. Although I think they may believe those are the mundane things involved with doll making, I find them fascinating. The opportunity to buy exclusive dolls, particularly artist full sets that may not be offered during a pre-order or an exclusive sculpt, is extremely important to me as a collector. If I’m going to take time off from work and spend travel funds to attend an event, my hope is to be able to add something unique to my collection. Having a special doll for the event that all attendees can order in advance can also be a huge draw for me, depending on the doll. I prefer to buy full sets, so when the doll offered is a full set doll and only available to attendees, I’m happy. I also like that dolls can be pre-ordered in advance--when traveling to a show, you are assured that you will get the doll no matter what, and don’t have to worry about being first in line at the sales table in order to get something. The sales room of an event is a big attraction as well. There is nothing like seeing outfits and wigs in person and being able to try them on your doll to get the perfect look! Browsing on Etsy for things can be fun but also frustrating. Being able to see things and try them in person is wonderful. Last, the city in which an event is held is also a strong consideration for me. My vacation time is limited so I prefer to go to events in cities I have never visited before. This way, I can not only do the doll event, but I can do some sightseeing in a new city as well. An additional consideration is where the hotel is located within the city – I like a hotel that is close to the main tourist attractions in the city so that I can walk to them and don’t have to hassle with a car. I am likely in the minority in these feelings because I think most people hang around the event hotel, but I like to travel and see new places, and so when I can double up with an event and a new place, it makes a stronger case for me to attend!
