TENDER CREATION

tendercreation.com

// from the Editor Being Fearless in Your Creativity. Creatively Fearless. Being... Writer’s Block....crap. It happens to the best of us (even those of us who aren’t writers). It’s when you have the best intentions to do something creative and you have that spark of thought that should send you into a full flame of artistic madness. And then...nothing. You hold a camera in your hand and can’t figure out what to shoot. You sit in front of a blank computer screen. You can’t figure out exactly why you should put your brush to the canvas. And in this very case...trying to write the From The Editor page. I knew I wanted to write something about being creative and fearless and nothing will come out. But here’s the thing...it’s ok to draw a blank from time to time. I’m reminded of the Simon and Garfunkel song “Cecilia”. Paul Simon wrote “Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart You’re shaking my confidence daily Oh, Cecilia, I’m down on my knees I’m begging you please to come home” For many years, I assumed this song was written about a girl who left him. Then after watching a documentary on their album “Bridge Over Troubled Water” I learned that Cecilia was a goddess of inspiration and the song was instead written about having writer’s block. And that feeling that Simon felt is the same one that we all feel. When our inspiration has left us, our confidence is shot and we beg it to return. And, damnit, that Cecilia just won’t listen. As artists, we often feel the need to always create. That we are only as good as the last photo we took or picture we painted. And sometimes that pressure that we put on ourselves gets in the way of the creativity and our muse leaves us. We can try to lasso her back, force her to help us to create, but the thing is, that will never work. Inspiration comes when it wants to come and nothing we can do can force it. So instead of getting down on yourself and trying to force something to happen, just let go. Go for a walk. Do something fun. Do anything that takes your mind off of what you feel you “need” to do. Because you never know what is going to trigger your muse. Go out and live your life. Enjoy the things that you love and just let go. Before you know it, it will hit you smack in the head and your muse will return. THEN you can grab that pen, that brush or that camera. Then you can be creatively fearless. Which I promise I’ll write about as soon as I get back from a walk. Live fearlessly, my friends, Sharon Wright Editor-In-Chief thestandmag.com All images are owned by their respective photographers and all images are provided with permission.
