This summer has be a hot one, that’s for sure. After spending last week in Phoenix, coming back to the relatively cool 90’s of Reno was a relief. Still hot enough that even the chickens need a fan. I have always viewed dolls as art and love decorating with dolls, even the antiques. I am particularly interested in the how the dolls move and creative process that allows movement. The bodies of BJD’s are somewhat similar to the bodies of dolls produced in the 1800’s. The fantastic thing is that every generation takes some part of the old and fashions it just a bit better. In my opinion, our current generation has surged ahead of all prior timeperiods and is stretching their creative muscles in so many directions, it is mind boggling. When I asked for contributions for this issue, I gave the broad theme of Summer. I am thrilled with the results! All of the photos told a story - and to some, I laughed out loud ... BRAVO to our contributors for their imagination and images of summer. In addition to telling a story, many of the photos in this issue evoke an emotion. I am sure that the story you see on the pages will differ from my perception, but isn’t that what makes it fun? So enjoy summer and this Lookbook - read a story or make one up, plan a trip, catch some sun, decorate a bit, take a class, dream, try a new hobby, or explore a new frontier. But most of all, have FUN! Everyday the slate is blank - let’s write on it together,

Contributers: Submit your photos to editor@thestandmag.com for consideration at any time. You will be contacted by the editor of photos that may be used in an issue. Show Reports: Submit within 60 days of the event taking place. The report is limited to 1000 words supported by as many high quality (300dpi) pictures as you would like to send. THE UNITED FEDERATION OF DOLL CLUBS held its 69th annual conference at the JW Marriott hotel, Phoenix July 17-21, 2018. Themed Passport to Adventure, the souvenir doll was by Ruby Red Galleria, shown below. There were so many educational and fun activities going on, I can not cover adequately here. I spent most of my time in the salesroom and will report on that aspect of this large doll convention. I am told that some folks feel that the UFDC is primarily about antique dolls, and there certainly were a lot of booths in the salesroom that featured antique dolls. A couple of things pleasantly struck me as I walked around. I found booths with BJD size accessories at affordable prices. I spent significant time shopping in booths that had fabrics, trims and dolly size hats. I found a number of current artists in the room and share just a tiny peek at their work on the following pages. I also enjoyed looking at the many faces of doll history displayed in the room. I spent extra time looking at the bodies of antique dolls from the 1800’s and enjoyed seeing that they are very similar to the BJD’s ... made from wood and jointed differently but similar nonetheless. The biggest difference between the antique dolls and our BJD dolls is that we are able to enhance with face-ups, as well as change their eyes, hands, wigs and clothes frequently. And yes, having dolls that travel with us to interesting places with amazing photo-ops ... well that’s the bonus! Please enjoy this photo journal of the UFDC artist experience!
