The first snow of the year is so beautiful! I know not everyone agrees, and I know I’ll change my mind by January - but the first snow is magical. It really gets me in the mood to pull out the Christmas tree, sing caroles and invite my doll friends over for lunch. I had a good time assembling this issue, and for the first time I had more photo contributions than could be used. It was an exercise in agony and pleasure as I went through the pictures again and again. I wanted to show the different faces of holidays from dressing up, to enjoying the lights, friends and sitting on Santa’s knee. To our contributors, I say thank you for bringing such joy into our lives! Be sure to take a look at the photo conest as deadlines are coming up and everyone of you should enter! This issue also includes the STAND’s 2nd year of sponsoring the Creating Innovation Awards. This contest turns the spotlight on BJD artists that are moving and inspiring the BJD world with their innovations and creativity. You will find details inside. May your spirit be enriched during this joyous season and throughout the coming year!

Creative Innovation Awards The Creative Innovation Awards are about recognizing the creativity innovations in the ball jointed world that move the industry forward and includes all aspects of the creative process. Now in its second year, the STAND’s Creative Innovation Award, has expanded to 9 categories and is open to artists worldwide. Photos of all entries will be reviewed by a panel of 5 judges. Each submission will be judged by its overall appeal, design innovations, originality, and quality of workmanship. Entry Specifics

• Each entry must match the category specifics exactly. Any deviation will be grounds for disqualification and will not be submitted for judging. Recasts are never allowed. • Entry deadline: Submit between December 4, 2019 and February 28, 2018 – if space is available, all entries will be published in Issue 18 of the STAND on March 31. Judging will take place in April with winners announced at PNW BJD Expo 2019. • Enter as many dolls/items in as many categories as you want, but an individual doll can only be entered once. If a doll was produced in different colors, only one color can be submitted. • The dolls may be made of resin, porcelain or vinyl. • Dolls/items that you submit must have been produced and for sale between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018. • $15.00 for the first entry, $5.00 for each additional entry.

Entry Information – per item, per category

• Name of doll • Height • Material used for head and body • Eye color & material • Costume description (detailed) • Additional description • Two pictures, one full length and one close-up • Photographer name

Notes: The submission link transfers you to a secure sister website for completion. Incomplete or unpaid forms will be disqualified. By submitting your items, you allow the STAND to use your photos in the magazine and for promotional materials. If there are less that 5 submissions in a category, the STAND reserves the right not to judge that category.

Photograph Requirements

You will need to include 2 photographs; one full length and one close-up in front of a plain background. The photo needs to be full resolution with a quality setting of “high” or better. Because of the large size, you will submit photos directly to editor@thestandmag.com – you will need to make sure your submission number is in the “subject” line.

Most Innovative Artist Award

Innovation is creating an original concept that did not exist in the hobby before and that changed or changes how collectors pose or dress dolls. Our 5 judges are taking this prestigious award very seriously in

choosing a list of the industry’s most creative artists for consideration. Their requirement is to nominate artists by answering these questions: name the innovation, how it impacted the industry, and why it’s important. More details will be posted on the website by mid-December.
