Primary Years Programme (PYP) @ St. Andrews

GV Mission Statement: “Developing independent, confident, life-long learners.” Nearing the end of the school year, it is wonderful to walk around the classrooms and reflect on the growth in our students, both academically and personally. Our Units of Inquiry this year have given them exciting and challenging opportunities through which to learn and our passionate teachers have been fantastic facilitators along the way. Each and every student has matured and can proudly talk about their new skills and knowledge. As it is my last term at St. Andrews, I would like to thank you all for your support, enthusiasm and collaboration in making our school the best it can be. I look forward to keep track of everyone on Facebook! Rachel Mustovic, PYP Coordinator

PYP Spotlight: The Value of Reflection Within the PYP curriculum, one of our Learner Profiles is “Reflective” and a Key Concept is “Reflection” so why is it that we value being able to reflect effectively? In education, the process of reflection helps students to develop a deeper understanding of themselves as learners, from their existing subject knowledge to the strategies they use to learn best. Having reflective thinking skills allows each student to have a greater awareness of their own progress academically, personally, socially and emotionally. By evaluating and reflecting on their learning, students can also take part in constructive goalsetting. They can then identify the steps they need to take to achieve these goals.

Teachers reflect too!

Stars of the Week At St. Andrews, we not only challenge students academically, we encourage them to become active, caring, lifelong learners who demonstrate respect for themselves and others and have the capacity to participate in the world around them. These are just some of our ‘Stars of the Week’ who have shown our Learner Profile attributes. Well done everyone!

PYP in Action - Units of Inquiry Here is a round-up of what’s happening during Term 2 in the Primary School. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a pretty inspiring time to be at school! Year

Nursery

Central Idea

Every day I learn more about who I am and what I can do.

Learner Profile

Caring, Communicator

In Term 3 Nursery children are learning to recognise and name some numbers, sizes, colours and shapes through our fun games. They are also learning to count with their fingers.

Year KG

Central Idea Stories around the world can help people learn

KG’s Unit of Inquiry is about stories from around the world. First we set sail on the high sea’s and became pirates while reading ‘Class KG go to Sea.’ We learned how to retell a story through role play and created our own props to support this. Next we set off on an adventure and discovered some dinosaurs had visited KG. The children then created their own stories and predictions about what had happened. This unit has captured the children creativity and imagination. Well done Kindergarten!

Learner Profile Thinker, Communicator

PYP in Action - Units of Inquiry Year R

Central Idea Materials can be used and changed in different ways through art.

Learner Profile Risk-taker, Balanced

Reception have been investigating materials and how materials can be changed. We started off by making slime using three different recipes. Students noticed how the materials we used changed throughout the process. Students then went on to look at some of the properties of materials by taking part in some experiments to find out if various materials were magnetic, waterproof or transparent.

Year 1

Central Idea People have a responsibility to the sea and the sea creatures.

Year 1 has been inquiring into their responsibility to the sea and sea creatures. During this Unit, students worked in groups to research different sea creatures that they were interested in. Then they visited the Sea Turtle Conservation Center in Sattihip to learn more about these amazing animals. In response to this visit, students organized a beach clean at a local beach. Together with parents and some Year 6 students, Year 1 proved yet again what caring and principled students they are.

Learner Profile Caring, Principled

PYP in Action - Units of Inquiry Year 2

Central Idea Habitats have unique features which living things are dependent on.

Learner Profile Inquirer, Caring

The children have devised a science experiment based on a question they have asked about what types of conditions plants need to survive. Some groups are seeing what happens if a plant has no light while others are finding out what happens if you give a plant Coke instead of water! We have learnt about the parts of a plant and what they do. We have created an animation based on the life cycle of a plant. We are going to research and write an information text about the different habitats that can be found around our school.

Year 3

Central Idea When interacting with natural habitats, humans make choices

Year 3 are learning all about how to share the planet. We are focusing on sculptures, living things, water and how we can make a difference to the world around us. We have been learning how to take care of plants and why we need them. We are using our communication skills and research skills in this current unit and reflecting a principled and caring attitude to the world around us and protecting different species. Year 3 are always working so hard and showing such a passion for their learning.

Learner Profile Principled, Caring

PYP in Action - Units of Inquiry Year 4

Central Idea Understanding ours and others rights and responsibilities shapes our community.

Learner Profile Reflective, Caring

Year 4 have just completed their “favourite unit of the year”. We have been learning all about structures and how material, design and location have an impact on a building’s strength and stability. We had special lessons from experts and a challenged presented to us by Ms Michelle – to design an eco-friendly outdoor classroom, that is weatherproof and has seating for a whole class. In groups we inquired, investigated and used maths to design our classrooms, we then used persuasive language to present these designs to a panel of judges. Now we eagerly await to see the winning design come to life over the summer.

Year 5

Central Idea Innovation, planning and product development contribute to running a successful business.

Learner Profile Reflective, Thinker

During this term, the students have been using our lines of inquiry to structure a research project into a chosen ancient civilisation. The students discovered about how different ancient civilisations started; different beliefs, cultures and social structures involved in different ancient civiliations; what inventions/technologies were used and how they connect with our world today. The students used many different inquiry techniques including planning and designing their own game, analyzing and recreating ancients artifacts and researching using keywords and paraphrasing enhancing their skills.

Learner Profile PYP Exhibition: #GenerationIB

Year 6 have been busy with their PYP Exhibition this term. Each group has been working on a project that is linked to the 17 Global Goals and within an area they feel passionate about. They have been demonstrating all learner profiles during this time and they have shown fantastic team work skills. They are currently working on their actions and applying their learning into real-life situations by doing their bit to help within the local community. The following two weeks they will be putting all their work together to then present it to the community on the 12th & 13th June.

PYP in Action - Specialists Our specialists have been hard at work as well... Music—Y1-5 On Thursday, 30th of May, students in Year 4 as well as Year 5 presented "Recorders and Refreshments" to the parents. These are songs that the students have independently chosen, practised, and performed. This is part of the music stand alone unit "Everyone can be a Musician".

PYP in Action - Specialists Music—Y6 Year 6 have been busy thinking about how Music can help them promote or send a message about their Global Goal for Exhibition. They've recorded their group songs and are rehearsing a whole year group performance as well (details are being kept top secret to allow for surprise on the night!)

Mandarin Year 5 Mandarin class have been learning about colours. The whole class walked around our campus and described the colour of the trees, flowers and flags. We have made videos and uploaded them on Seesaw so take a look!

Thai In Year 1 Thai, we are reading Thai books with /um/ as in -yumsound. We went on a mini trip to the big tree behind the Reception area called Chum cha. We discussed and learned that the tree's name Chum cha can be called Garm pu too. We had fun and they enjoyed reading more than usual.

In Year 2 Thai, we are having fun with reading sight words/ frequency words with all the vowels they have been doing in class with the dice game.

Thai MFL In Year 2 their class Unit of Inquiry is looking at living things. In Thai we’ve been supporting this by learning about plants. We even did an experiment to see how the roots work! We also enjoyed singing Thai songs about the parts of plants and learnt about colour.
