Sensational IB Results (again) The IB Diploma Programme is a two year course where students study six subjects; three at higher level and three at standard level. The maximum grade a student can achieve in one of their six subjects is seven points. In addition to the six subjects, Diploma students study Theory of Knowledge and complete an Extended Essay which provide up to three bonus points for students. The maximum IB Diploma score is therefore 45 points. The minimum score needed to pass the IB Diploma is 24 points and the world average each year is around 30. Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) is also a core element of the IB Diploma Course as it encourages students to engage with the local community and also continue to find ways to improve themselves. The class of 2018 achieved outstanding results and we are very proud to report that in what is now becoming a proud tradition for St Andrews Green Valley, we once again achieved a 100% pass rate compared to a world average of 80%. This is the sixth year in a row we have achieved this result!
Other headline facts include:
A total of 11 students followed the IB Diploma curriculum in Year 13 with 9 of these students completing the full diploma.
Our Average Diploma Score was 34.89 compared to a world average of just under 30.
All 9 full diploma students achieved a diploma score higher than the world average.
St Andrews’ Average Grade was 5.28 compared to a world average of approximately 4.70.
Sasiwimon (Thangkwa) Suksaisakulsakdi achieved a score of 40 points (top 10% in the world), Isabella Hickox achieved 39 points, Nongpassorn (Ping) Archawapongpanish 37 points and Jordan Hickox 36 points.
Our Diploma students achieved an average of 1.78 bonus points compared to a world average of 1.28.
Congratulations and well done to all of the Graduating Class of 2018!!
Fantastic IGCSE Results Our IGCSE results were once again very strong with a few highlights being:
80.4% of grades A* - C’s compared to a UK average of just under 70%
36 % of grades A* - A compared to a UK average of around 22%
100% pass rate in English Literature, Additional Maths, French, Mandarin, Dutch, History Art, Chemistry and Physics.
St Andrews students also achieved a number of individual successes. Highly notable results were achieved by:
Yujun 11 x A*
David 9 x A* / A
Toosje 9 x A* / A
Foei Foei 8 x A* / A
Accelerated Programmes Many of our students take the option to sit IGCSE exams one, two or even three years early, nearly always with great success. A few highlights from the May / June 2018 exams were:
16 Year 10 students sat the IGCSE Maths exam and passed achieving 10 x A*, 4 x A and 2 x B. An amazing result!
28 Year 9 and 10 students sat the English Second Language exam with 93% achieving a grade of C or better!
We had students from Years 8 and 9 sit IGCSE exams in First and Second Language French, First Language Japanese and Second Language Dutch with 100% of students achieving grades of A* - B.
Alumni Update In 2017 Pierre achieved 43 points in IB and secured a place at Imperial College London to study Chemical Engineering. After his first year at University, in addition to being on the Dean's List (top 10% of students), he was then named as the top student for Faculty of Chemical Engineering and awarded the 'Institution of Chemical Engineers Books Prize'. Nick, his father, wrote: "We were so proud to find out that Pierre has been awarded this prize. A key factor of his success can be attributed to the progress and guidance that Pierre made at St Andrews and reinforces the pride you should all feel for your school." Pierre credits his achievements to the thorough preparation he received whilst studying the broad IB diploma programme, and whilst he is on an engineering degree he has drawn on many other aspects of his IB course such as Economics, English and the Theory of Knowledge. However, he says by far the biggest praise he can give IB compared to other curriculums is simply the experience of doing it: the timemanagement skills needed to complete internal assessments and CAS projects, the writing skills employed for the extended essay and the ability to meet tight deadlines. Congratulations Pierre!
PTG Sala
Our 21st Anniversary sala has arrived and the children are already enjoying this new space. Thank you to the PTG for their kind donation.
Year 12 IB Retreat A productive 2 days were spent on retreat in Rayong with the new Year 12 cohort. This was an invaluable opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of the IB structure and curriculum and the students rose to the challenge making their own promotional videos of the IB. The resulting films considered the course requirements, assessments, key skills, learner profiles and how the IB compares to other curricula such as A-levels. Students worked in teams to produce funny, imaginative movies that will be enjoyed by our future IB students. In addition to movie making, the students undertook a number of challenges linked into the IB learner profiles. Building bamboo stretchers and transporting peers along the beach, tested communication and decision making. A beach clean focused on being Principled and Caring. Mindful meditation looked at managing stress and encouraged open mindedness and reflection. There was also time to enjoy beach sports and share delicious meals together. A particular highlight was the spontaneous sing alongs accompanied by Toosje on Ukele. We went away as a group of Year 12 students and teachers and returned as an IB family. Well done Year 12.
Wine and Cheese Evening Our annual 'Meet the teacher' cheese and wine evening was a great success as always. Parents initially had the opportunity to meet teachers during information sessions based in the classrooms, and then gathered in the heart of our school to meet old friends and welcome new members to our community. The IB CAS students did a terrific job at organising the event, and were rushed off their feet preparing and serving the delicious canapĂŠs and cheese. Mr Harrison also introduced new teachers and presented some of the highlights from our continually impressive IGCSE and IB Diploma results. Thanks to all involved.
IGCSE Art results Congratulations to the IGCSE Art and Design class of 2018 for a 100% A*- C pass rate and some wonderful artwork produced.
100%
A* - C pass rate in Art
Year 9 Scientists extract DNA As part of their unit on Inheritance and Selection Year 9 have been extracting DNA from Onion, Kiwi and Banana cells. Can you spot their DNA molecules?
Learner Profile Awards In Secondary, we regularly celebrate students who demonstrate outstanding IB Learner Profile attributes. Our first award winner for this academic year was Muk, who has been an outstanding Inquirer in her English lessons, and made huge improvement. Thank you to Mrs Standen for the nomination, and congratulations to Muk!
Year 7 Science Safety In Science, Year 7 have started the term learning all about lab safety, potential hazards and how to recognise, name and draw laboratory equipment. They have also gained their Bunsen Burner licenses as they can all light and use a Bunsen burner safely.
New IB Study and Common Rooms To help accommodate our largest group of IB students ever, we had a new IB Common Room and IB Study Room built over the July - August holiday. These facilities help to recognize that Year 12 and 13 students are now young adults who need quiet spaces to both study and relax as they work towards graduation.
Island Community Football We kicked off the sports events for the new academic year with the Island Community football tournament. As the teams battled it out it was great to see so many of the new students getting involved and displaying their talents. Congratulations to Phuket who won overall, putting an end to the long run of Samet winning many of the sports events!
Community Service: Operation Smile IB students from Green Valley, through the CAS initiatives, have supported Operation Smile for a number of years now. It is a special opportunity for our students to make a life-changing difference to another person's life. Some Year 12 students will be getting on-board with this project this term and supporting the up-coming mission in Mae Sot. Recently we were honoured to have a special visit from one of the Operation Smile team. Dean who coordinates the school projects talked to the Year 12 students about Operation Smile: its foundation, purpose and how the students could get involved in the next mission in Mae Sot. Jade from Year 13 who helped on the mission last year also spoke about this life changing experience and how it has inspired her to research more about the causes of cleft lips and palates for her IB Extended Essay.
