Head of School Message This year has certainly been one to remember! As I reflect back on all we have achieved in the midst of the challenges thrown at us by the pandemic, I can’t help but feel immensely proud of our school community; teachers, students and parents; for the resilience and high level of flexibility they have shown. Thank you especially to our parents who have continued to show us unwavering support as we have navigated these uncertain times. This year has been a mix of online and in-person learning, and both elements have brought something exciting to our school calendar. During online learning, many brilliant initiatives arose and several successful theme days were held. Days such as STEAM Day and Cooking Day were a great example of our teachers’ resourcefulness and our students’ interactivity with their work - we saw a number of ingenious activities set for the students and hundreds of videos submitted back to us in return! We also made the most of the times that we were open, hosting a number of successful events wherever possible. We celebrated and paid tribute to our long-serving staff who have
worked at St Andrews Green Valley for over 10, 15 and even 20 years! I was reminded of the talented and loyal community that serves our school, and how lucky we are that they are still working with us today! Other memorable events that come to mind are our Early Years Wheels Day, which saw families and their children whizzing around the car park earning their drivers licences and stopping at the car wash, the ever successful One Day One Goal and other sporting tournaments, multiple music concerts and, of course, the brilliant school production that was Alice in Wonderland. You will have a glimpse into these events as you browse through this yearbook, which I hope shows you just how much our school community gets up to! We are looking forward to the new school year ahead and the opportunities and challenges that are bound to come with it. I have no doubt that it will be yet another success!

Head of Primary Message Looking back on this year fills me with pride and gratitude. I am proud because we have continued to show what a strong, supportive and resilient community we are, despite the continuation of challenges we face. We have also shown that we can find positive and creative ways to overcome these challenges and still ensure that our children receive a full range of activities and experiences at Green Valley. One example of this is our whole-school production of Alice in Wonderland. When many schools decided not to have a production on this scale due to the various restrictions, we decided we would creatively overcome these by organizing a promenade-style production, making use of our beautiful school grounds. It’s adapted events like these that show how we continue to think creatively to go around obstacles that we face and show that things don’t have to stop when the going gets tough. I am also thankful that we all continue to have a positive mindset, work hard and support each other to ensure we make progress in all areas. We also make sure that, as well as supporting each other, we continue to support people less fortunate than ourselves through our various charity initiatives and giving programmes. It is important that we take this time to remember and celebrate all the great things we’ve achieved this year. One area that deserves a particular mention is our journey to becoming a Green School and achieving the internationally recognized ‘Green School award.’ It has been so impressive to see the range of whole-school Green initiatives being set up this year from beach cleanups, recycling and composting projects, the setting up of our eco shop and activities. Our primary Green Council leaders are certainly encouraging us to take a more sustainable approach at school and home and make a real difference in the world.

Other highlights of the year for me are when members of our school community come together to see our children develop and have fun in all areas. Sporting events such as the swimming galas, sports day and primary invitational games are opportunities for children to show their competitive side, be resilient and be part of a team. The year 6 production of the ‘Midnight Gang’ and the Mini Music concerts also show what confident, creative risk-takers our children are becoming. In addition, the overnight trips such as Year 5’s trip to the Navy centre, Year 4 to Khoa Chamao and the Year 3 Camp Out also help our children to develop independence and resilience. The Student Led Conference is yet another example of how our children are becoming active agents in their learning, demonstrating great leadership skills and a passion for learning. It has been unfortunate that we have had two periods of online learning this year. The positive way we have all approached online learning and continued to improve our online programme is also something that we should be proud of. These periods online show us that our children are really developing those 21st century skills and are adaptable, positive and supportive when we face ongoing challenges. Friday Fun days, virtual assemblies and virtual parent workshops have enabled our learning community to stay connected and in high spirits. So even though this hasn’t been a usual school year, I hope you agree we have continued to be successful and make progress in all areas. Thank you for your ongoing support and see you all next year. Head of Secondary Message We are definitely living in both interesting and challenging times! As Covid-19 continues to influence our daily lives I would like to congratulate our students, school staff and parents on the resilience they have shown each and every day during the 2020 – 2021 school year. Two periods of online learning tested us and made us adapt away from our traditional way of learning. As a school, I am very proud that we were able to do this with great resolve and creativity and were once again able to make the best of a difficult situation. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students also impressed me with the way in which they faced uncertainty over IB and IGCSE exams. They maintained their focus and continued to study and work towards their final examinations. The examinations were cancelled again however our students were able to complete a range of assessments to help ensure they will be rewarded with the grades that they deserve. One of the challenges with the situation created by Covid-19 is being careful and looking after ourselves but at the same time continuing to live our lives. At school, even though a number of events were cancelled, we were still able to celebrate many events together. We started the school year with the Global Be Well Day in September which was a timely celebration of different ways to look after our mental health. The whole school community engaged together in a wide range of activities with the focus being on life long changes rather than just a one day event. As a school, our focus on community service has continued as we do our best to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves. We continue to support the Hand to Hand Foundation, Fr Ray’s Foundation, Baan Kru Boonchu and many other local charity organisations. We have also increased our commitment to looking after the environment with a large number of students involved in the Green Council.
Each year during term one, a major event is the secondary drama production. This year’s production of Alice in Wonderland was not only entertaining but inventive. To help with social distancing, different scenes were staged around the school with the audience moving from place to place to enjoy the entertainment. A record number of students were involved, including 7 students playing the part of Alice. Our commitment to continue to function as normally as possible under the circumstances saw many events still take place such as: Carols by Candlelight; The Little Lunchtime Music Concert; the IB Art Exhibition; Swimming Galas; Sports Days; the 3-on-3 basketball competition; the Year 8 residential trip to Koh Chang and the Science Fair which actually expanded it’s size and became the Global Science Expo. Looking to the future, as a school we will continue to face and adjust to the challenges that we are presented with. We will remain confident and optimistic and make the best out of every situation that we are presented with. As the Head of Secondary, I remain immensely proud of all that we have achieved this school year and the positive way we are moving forward to face the new challenges that we are presented with. As a school community, we remain strong and supportive and are well positioned to move forward and take advantage of any situation we are presented with. In closing, I would like to thank our students, parents and school staff for their hard work, resilience, patience and support this year. Even in the face of adversity, we have had a very productive school year!

Head Students Message Despite the global pandemic giving us many challenges, such as restrictions and measures throughout, our student body has been strengthened more than ever by supporting and complementing each other through an intimate bond, persistent dedication and commitment by every student leader. The first and most important objective of the student leadership this year was to create an environment where the student voice could not only be heard but discussed and acted upon by the student leaders - the Student Council, Prefects and Island Community Leaders - in order to improve the school life in many ways. We made this possible through the Student Questionnaire and Online Student Suggestion form, where we opened the door to student evaluation, suggestions and opinions. This helped us to discuss and decide on our projects throughout the year and deliver updates and information on a regular basis. The Primary and Secondary Student Councils worked hard with persevering dedication and motivation, meeting every week to bring suggestions and opinions from their fellow students and discussing ways to move forward with project ideas and plans. Our Prefects brought success to various projects, from the Talent Show to sports competitions, through effective planning, excellent communication and close relationships with students throughout the school. This year, we focused on students’ wants and the main ideas were to have a school stationery shop and a new school sweatshirt. The Stationery Shop was implemented and many students are using this new facility. We also worked throughout the school year to find the best sweatshirt and we made huge advancements into reaching this goal.

We also decided that it would be a good idea to include the Primary Student Council in our weekly meetings. It was the first year that the Head Students had active contact with the Primary Student Council and we both believe that it was a great addition to our duties. It fitted well with our goal to increase the bond between the primary and secondary students. This opportunity also opened many doors for potential activities and projects we could do, as we could make activities and projects that fitted all the students in the school rather than only the secondary students. Overall, we had an amazing year as head students this year. We gained a lot of experience through our roles and responsibilities throughout. We focused on the relationship with the students and strengthening the bond and partnership with the primary students too. We would like to thank the Student Council and the Prefects for the achievements that we reached, despite the restrictions posed by the pandemic. We would like to conclude our comment by thanking the GV Community - our students, staff and parents - for all the efforts and support throughout the year.

Parents Testimonials In October 2019 our family relocated to Thailand. We have two sons, Aurelio ( in Y2) and Emilio (in Y13). We choose St Andrews Green Valley because of the Dutch Stream, which helps our sons to maintain and improve their knowledge of their native language. The location of the school and the sports facilities are also a big asset. When my children started at Green Valley, they had EAL lessons with dedicated teachers to help them adapt to the English language. Their progress was amazing! Our sons are very enthusiastic to go to school (online and in person) in Thailand. They have lovely friends and outstanding teachers. Their work stimulates their creative thinking, individual growth and wellbeing. They are encouraged to work on tasks independently. They have an experience for life.

When we relocated, we never expected to experience a pandemic situation. Despite the current situation, we enjoy and are happy to live our dream. We feel proud to be a part of the St.Andrews Green Valley community.
The first time that I saw my two sons, Yuki and Taiki, discussing something together in English at Home, I realised how much they had improved since joining St. Andrews. It was really challenging for Yuki and Taiki to join an international school, because they studied at a Japanese public elementary school before coming to Thailand and their English ability was very limited at that time. We visited a few international schools before transferring from another school. The reason why we decided to join St. Andrews was because of the school’s welcoming atmosphere from friendly staff, the beautiful and unique school environment, the small class sizes and the strong school program. Every time I see my sons riding on the School bus with a smile on their faces, or when they are chatting happily about their day at school, I really feel like we made the best decision.

A Message from Our Prefects Prefects have successfully led projects and initiatives that aimed to improve our school life in various ways. Academic Prefects created a website that allowed access to extended learning resources for students, which also encouraged student interaction and strengthened the relationship between Prefects and students. This academic year was special and unique, which meant that students had a limited amount of activities that were possible. Academic Prefects ran a very successful volleyball tournament that bonded students and staff with joy through matches filled with excitement and competitiveness.

Bridging the gap between Primary and Secondary proved possible by the Primary-Secondary Liaison Prefect, a newly created role from this academic year, through choosing to attend the Primary Student Council meetings and coordinating events that incorporate both Primary and Secondary schools for better communication and improved relations. This was seen through our successful Amazing Race Crossover event, where students collaborated to complete challenges, all the while forging great friendships!

The Primary Student Council worked hard to improve students’ school life in and outside of the classroom environment. They successfully represented the Primary School by regularly meeting to discuss ideas and encouraging their classmates to share ideas of their own, which helped them plan, organise and make positive changes to daily school life.
The Secondary Student council this year faced many challenges due to Covid-19 regulations. There was very little opportunity for any gathering and school events. However, despite this, the student council was able to still continue and lead some projects. We have been able to work on the school sweatshirts and it is well on its way to being a new addition to our school’s uniform. We have also, throughout the year, listened to students’ opinions and tried to take in student ideas, transforming them into actions.
Being in the leading position gave Student Welfare Prefects an opportunity to realise how important wellbeing is in school life. During a challenging time with a pandemic, they looked for new ways that students could reconnect and do schoolwork and revision in a fun, supportive and motivating way.
Despite the pandemic and the period of online schooling challenging them with restrictions and cancellations, it did not take away their spirit of ‘being the best at getting better’, which encouraged all members to keep striving for their best to make the school a better place for all.

Green Council Promoting a Green ethos at Green Valley This year at Green Valley, we have had a big drive on promoting environmental issues and encouraging a green ethos amongst our whole school community. We set up an Environmental Strategic group of Teachers, our Green Council of committed students and “Green matters”, a group for the whole community to become part of. We have had a highly successful first year. Our Green Matters website was administered by Mahiro, our Senior Eco-rep. We also have a Facebook and Instagram account and publish a monthly Green Matters Newsletter. We are encouraging sustainable consumption through our online second-hand store and Eco-shop. We have introduced a wide range of environmental initiatives and projects as we progress towards the Eco-school’s award.
The Eco-schools Award Independent research has found evidence of the positive impacts of the Ecoschools Programme on pupils, including increased confidence, development of leadership skills, improved pupil well-being and behaviour and greater motivation at school. As well as the pupil benefits, which have a hugely positive effect on the whole school community, GV will benefit from reducing our environmental impact. A key element is an involvement of pupils in the whole process, including monitoring, action planning and decision making, leading to ownership and an increased sense of responsibility to the environment and the local area.
The Environmental Strategic group The Environmental Strategic group at GV consists of a mix of Primary and Secondary teachers, passionate about environmental issues and determined to make St Andrews GV a great Eco-school. Mrs Gilbert and Ms Ferrier supervise the Primary and Secondary Green Council, Mrs Kinsella and Khun Noo run eco craft activities each week, Ms Ginny gardens with the primary school, Mr Ben runs Forest school and composting, Khun Noo is creating recycling opportunities, Mrs Thiery is organising our GV Beach Cleans, Mrs Gilbert and Ms Ginny also worked on a school-wide growing community project with Hand to Hand and our CAS students. The objectives of the group are to achieve the Schools Eco Award- Gold level whilst delivering integrated whole school initiatives showcasing Green Valley as an inspirational Eco-school. In doing so we aim to improve student and staff well being through a connection with the natural environment and inspire our students to go out into the world and be the change.
The Green Council Launched in 2020, the Green Council, consisting of members from Years 4 up to 12, worked together to make Green Valley even greener through spreading the active mind towards the local climate and environment. The Councils met every week to address and discuss the challenges which helped them decide on action plans to work towards. At the start of the year, students carried out the Environmental Audit which helped them evaluate the current outlook on environmental issues and sustainability. Those actions included offering opportunities for student and community engagement in Eco Activities such as the Eco Bricks Challenge and Tetra Pack/Milk bottle collection, and Earth Day Celebration where students contributed to the Earth Day Selfie Wall and a Mangrove Fundraiser (the GV community made donations to plant more than 230 mangrove trees in Rayong and Sattahip) to help tackle the deforestation issue on a national scale. Utilising the Green Matters Website, the GV Green Newsletter and other social platforms enabled frequent engagement where students were encouraged to join the Green Matters movement and take actions themselves. Overall, the Green Council has taken a big step towards making an impact on the way Green Valley approaches a global environmental issue by raising awareness of and fostering community actions towards sustainability and building eco-minded ethos among fellow students. Green Council
Eco-activities GV gardening projects Gardening projects continue to offer great outdoor learning experiences. In the first term students in primary and secondary grew vegetables that were transferred down to Hand to Hand community garden by students in Year 12. We are now focusing on extending the Primary Garden area with terraced flower and vegetable beds behind the garden hut. The school fence will be covered with Ceylon spinach seedlings which the children have grown from seeds. Next academic year we will be promoting continuing stewardship with the introduction of Island community allotments in the Giving and Primary gardens for students to grow their own produce.
GV Beach Cleans November saw the GV beach clean team out in force, clearing litter from Namrin Beach. We were out again in the heat of April where 3 truckloads of trash were removed from Payoon Beach. Such action aims to Spread Awareness and increase wellbeing through meaningful and social activity. This activity involved community and students from all ages (Nursery to
IB). Well done to everyone who was involved.
Recycling projects Our action plan aims to educate and provide opportunities for recycling at GV. So far we have run several recycling campaigns in school: Eco bricks, Tetrapak, milk bottles, soap from used oil and plastic bits have been recycled. The Ecobrock challenge was completed with the Youth club using the bricks to make furniture as a STEM project.
Composting This year we have set up a composting area where green waste can be processed to become new soil which can be used in the gardens and flower beds. So far we have cleared the site and purchased a mulcher. The concept of composting has been introduced through forest school and we are encouraging responsible use of garden waste, with our gardeners burning less. Students can see the positive change in soil structures and biodiversity during lessons
Our “Green Christmas” Eco stall raised over 4000 baht for further eco projects. We have introduced an online secondhand market and eco shop on the GV Green Matters website. Weekly Eco Activities have taken place where students learned the skill of upcycling and producing sustainable products (including soap from recycled oil, notebooks from recycled paper, and lanterns made from food-cans and bottles). Future projects will encourage students to make beeswax paper and planters from jars and twigs. Students are practicing the skill of setting up and running an ethical business whilst educating other students and parents to reduce, recycle, reuse, repurpose- to consume more sustainably
Earth Day Celebration Being online did not stop us from celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd. The Green Council set a challenge to fund the planting of 500 mangroves in the local area to help to offset our carbon emissions. The GV Mangrove Challenge was launched to raise awareness about the importance of these crucial wetlands to biodiversity, water quality, coastal protection and local livelihoods. So far, more than 250 mangrove saplings have been sponsored by the GV community. We hope that students will be actively involved in planting these next year. Yearbook 2020-2021

Our Dutch Stream The school year has come to an end and it has been an exciting one for the students of our Dutch stream. We started the new school year with a new teacher, Mr. Daan. Daan came together with his two sons Olle and Abel and their mum Jonne. We also welcomed Jo-Anna, Femke, Nienke and Arianne as new students in the Dutch Stream. They have adapted quickly and are now full members of our community. In December it was time for our yearly Sinterklaas celebration. The primary students got together to sing Sinterkaas songs and unwrap their presents. The secondary students made anonymous surprise gifts for each other and they also wrote a poem for our ‘Pakjesmiddag’ in school. Sinterklaas rewarded our students with an overload of sweets, which can only be explained by their good behavior over the past year. After the Christmas Break we had a short switch to online learning due to Covid-19, but we were back in school in time to celebrate NOB’s 40th birthday. Throughout the year the students have been working hard on their Belgium-Netherlands projects. Unfortunately, not everyone got to present their amazing work because we had to go back to online learning after the Songkran holiday in April again. We managed to celebrate Kings’ Day together online playing games with all the students and parents in orange. After this school year we are going to say goodbye to the Colpaert family, who have been with us for five years. They are moving back to Belgium and we wish them all the best in their future education. We wish everybody a lovely holiday and we hope to see everyone back in good health in August. Youth Club This year our students got a taste of the newly-opened GV Youth Club. Taking place after school, it includes a range of activities that take place in a safe space where young people can develop a sense of belonging, socialise with their peers and develop relationships with adults they can trust. The Youth Club recognises that with the right supportive relationships, strong ambitions, and good opportunities, all young people can realise their potential and be active members of the community. Our activities have had a positive impact on students’ wellbeing and social skills. As the number of young people attending increased, so did the needs of the group. Core activities such as Boxing for Fun, Foosball and Table Tennis have been great entertainers for all year groups. Additionally, voluntary support from staff, IB and year 11 students helped us to deliver a dynamic range of opportunities, such as weekly Mosaic art, Karaoke, Cycling, DT building, Chess coaching and Cooking to cater for different key stages. Throughout the year, this space is also used for regular parent Yoga and Pilates classes in the morning. The student peer mentoring programme provided support to those in need of fun, diversionary activities. The Youth Club has run workshops for Math and English, as well as giving other departments an opportunity to open their environment by taking their learning out of the classroom. What’s next for the Youth Club? We hope to increase the number of young people accessing the Youth Club and continue having a positive impact on the community. We also hope to continue sessions in positive, informal educational activities. We would also like to deliver refreshments at the Youth Club, continue Eco-brick building, paint the inside, encourage more Music and build a digital platform for online engagement. CAS (Creativity,, Activity and Service)
This academic year will certainly be remembered as a year like no other! Many of the traditional CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) opportunities that were available to students in previous years were no longer possible due to Covid-19, however, we could not be prouder of how our students and community rose to this challenge and how positive and adaptable they have remained. CAS, an integral and core component of the IB Diploma Programme, has continued and indeed thrived with our students proving innovative and open to different opportunities. CAS encourages students to develop vital skills such as adaptability, communication, cooperation and problem-solving. The pandemic has challenged them further and they have continued to thrive and show the commitment and perseverance to uphold the CAS principles. This year has seen many inventive CAS initiatives such as teaching others how to solve the Rubics cube; packing Eco bricks and turning them into furniture in the Youth Club; turning old 5kg rice bags into reusable shopping bags for the market and collecting milk cartons and converting these into planters for the Grow2Give project with Hand to Hand. Some of our CAS students have also been active on the Green Council, organizing meetings, creating web content, fundraising for the Mangrove challenge, setting up a second-hand exchange of goods and leading primary eco activities. They have also volunteered to help at One Day One Goal and United Football and teaching playground science to primary students. Many have learned to cook or bake at home or school in the popular cooking classes run by Chef Alfie. Exercising at home and learning instruments, such as the guitar, have proved really popular during this disrupted year of learning. There is a huge breadth of opportunities available and whether being actively involved within the successful drama production ‘Alice in Wonderland’ or obtaining a First Aid certification, CAS students have immersed themselves fully in extra-curricular and service experiences. A particular CAS highlight this year was the establishment of online teaching sessions, as part of the Remote Reading/Tutoring project with Myanmarese refugees at the KGED School in Maesot. Commencing in October 2020, GV student volunteers from Years 10, 12, and 13 each led a video call via Zoom each Saturday morning. These calls helped the Myanmarese students target specific areas within their GED (General Educational Development), an American qualification consisting of English, Math, and Social Studies components. The score from the GED qualifies these students to enroll at Thai universities. This project could literally help change lives for the students, assisting them to get to University. It is a superb project which was 100% organised and administered by Mahiro, a Year 12 IBDP student. Green Valley is incredibly proud of Mahiro, this project and its achievements so far. Well done GV CAS students on another successful year!

Our Online Learning The silver lining of the unavoidable stumbling blocks of Covid-19 has highlighted the many strengths we share as a learning community. More than ever before our learners, parents and teachers are emerging as heroes, tackling head-on the challenges of online learning to strive and thrive. Together, we have navigated these uncharted waters in shaping our online learning platform collaboratively to ensure we remain connected and our learners continue to grow holistically. Although online learning is not a replacement for school, we have focused on goals rather than challenges, providing the best possible educational opportunities for all. A blend of live lessons with class and subject specialist teachers, with the interactive nature of Seesaw, has empowered our learners share their learning creatively whilst maximising their engagement. Integrating learning support throughout our online learning platform has enabled all of our pupils, regardless of any challenges they may have, to receive high-quality support to enable them to be successful. Online learning does not mean remote learning at Green Valley! We have maximised opportunities for social interaction in order to remain connected as a community and have fun together through weekly assemblies, themed days such as Earth Day and Friday fun days. We are proud of what we have achieved during our online learning platform. But don’t just take our word for it! Take a look at some of the feedback we have received from our parents and pupils: “Lessons have been delivered in a fun, engaging way with the teacher online, supporting the student at every stage of the task. My daughters really appreciate the interaction with the teacher and their friends throughout each lesson.
