Volleyball

What an end to the season for our Senior Volleyballers. The atmosphere at the Senior Volleyball Finals was electric. St Andrew's Division 1 Boys finished in 4th place and the Division 2 Boys ended up 2nd. Our Division 2 Girls team just missed out on first place with a 3 set final against Flinders, with the last set going to 14-16. It is so impressive to see how far these teams have come throughout this season. The game of the season has to go to our Division 1 Girls team finals match. After a hard fought for 2 sets against a very strong Matthew Flinders team, the girls entered the 3rd set on 1 set each. Holding strong, they convincingly won the 3rd set and are now this season's Champions. Congratulations to their super coach Mr Rob Kelly. It was also amazing to see so many supporters at the finals and all the other games throughout the season.
I would like to thank all our coaches, Mr Cade Bonar, Mr Sean Cleary,Mr David Elley, Mr Rob Kelly, led wonderfully by Mr Troy Bates for al their continued efforts and support of Volleyball at the college.
We cannot wait until the Qld Volleyball Senior Schools Cup weekend in August next term.

Rowing

7 of 65

Rowing continues to grow at St Andrew’s. They were superb from our rowers who took out both the Boys and Girls Sunshine Coast Schools Rowing 'Head of the RIver trophy'. It was cold, choppy and windy but it certainly did not dampen the spirits of the team and the support of families. This is the 2nd year in a row our Girls have won the trophy and is a real credit to their efforts at training at 5am over

the last term . Well done team and look out for more Rowing developments coming up! Special thanks to Maroochy Rowing Club for all their hard work in developing Rowing and the wonderful event today. Well done to Amy Wright, Elle Le Faou, Sinead Hayes, Grace Floyd, Zac Allen, Jake Duregger, Josh Batten,Nelson Scholes, Lawson Wrigley, Fraser Hopkins and Will Oakes.

What an unbelievable night for our Junior Rugby players who formed the guard of honour for the Qantas Wallabies and England Rugby at Suncorp stadium on Saturday 11th June. 62 players were on the field prior to the match and then formed the tunnel for the players.

What an absolute thrill. Special thank you to The Australian Rugby Union and Qantas Wallabies for their amazing support. Thank you to St Andrew's families for your outstanding friendship of St Andrew's Rugby.

Rugby

The Open First XV

Final game wrap up The boys had a tough encounter against James Nash state high school. The boys encountered a big and physical opposition however stood tall and are to be commended for their commitment. After a tough first 10 minutes our boys started to dominate the fringes of the ruck and make good metres and we eventually crossed to score two first half tries through Alex Moses and Tom Siemon. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration saw James Nash hit back with two quick tries in the last 5 minutes of the half converting both seeing us trail by 4 points at half-time. Our men rallied in the second half which again was the scene of many ‘big hits’. Special mention to out forwards who worked tirelessly all night against a much larger opposition pack. This allowed two tries through Alex and Tom S and several unsuccessful attempts on the line. With two converted tries a piece the first half conversions proved the difference as St Andrews was defeated 28 to 24.

The final match of the 2016 season saw our Open First XV against a combined PLC/ILC/Maroochy. Our opens started in promising fashion getting over the advantage line consistently to put ourselves in a strong attacking position. Our backline ran great lines to open space for Alex Moses to cross in the second minute. This was followed by another solid backline move creating an overlap out wide for Sean Phillips to cross in the corner. Our forwards were under constant pressure at the ruck and battled several well drilled pilfering players each phase to retain ball. PLC/ILC crossed out wide to take the score to 7 to 10. Our men rallied to see our forwards pick and drive several phases before our backs capitalised on space to see Alex Moses cross off the back of great runs from Tom Siemon and Tom McConner. St Andrews took a 15 to 7 lead into half time.

The second half saw a war of attrition with both forward packs digging deep to retain ball and attack the fringes. The dewy night made conditions tricky for outside backs. PlC/ILC crossed again after a contentious turnover. The match was played at pace and emotions ran high, however our opens held their cool to see the St Andrews First XV run out eventual victors 15 to 12 to finish the season on a high.

Secondary Wrap up Week 7 saw the final round of the schools competition with our opens and Under 13’s both playing twice. The 13’s travelled to James Nash and it was another tale of David and Goliath. Faced by a large James Nash squad we conceded 2 early tries but after a quick regroup under the posts the real Under 13’s emerged. The boys dug deep, tackled low and ran the ball at pace. Tries from Max Davidson, Mitchell James and Lachlan Campbell Balkin were the result of great defence and strong attack. Each try was converted by Matthew Bain which was to prove the difference with James Nash scoring a third try but with only 1 successful conversion the U 13s were victorious with the result being 21 – 17 in our favour. On Wednesday we entertained PLC and had another strong victory. Two tries from Jaxon Woodward, and one a piece from Matt Bain and Lachlan Campbell Balking secured the victory as did 3 conversions from Matt Bain. The final score of 26 – 17 reads well but the game was most definitely a tale of two halves. The first half was structured, good attack and solid tackling, the second half was sloppy, lacking structure and a lot of missed tackles…but we play matches to learn and we will learn from this. The Wednesday season has been

an excellent opportunity for us to experience more rugby, work on more skills in game situations and conquer our fear of ‘larger opposition’.

The Under 14’s regularly came up against much bigger sides and the final round of the season for our U14’s saw them again take on size. They faced a big Unity side that they had faced only the week before at Grammar. The pattern of the game was extremely similar with St Andrews working hard and committing themselves physically in the face of constant Unity pressure. The much bigger Unity forwards inevitably made ground against the smaller St Andrews pack, but were made to work hard for their points. The second half was a similar tussle but the St Andrew’s boys never gave up and were rewarded when big second rower, Charlie Dryburgh powered his way to the line to get St Andrew’s on the scoreboard. The final score was a 46-7 defeat but the boys once again left nothing out on the field. Well done U14;s who consistently never gave up up in touch conditions all season

Team of the Carnival

It was a great day today as our U11 team competed at the DNK Cup hosted superbly by All Saints Anglican School. Some brilliant Rugby with the team finishing a wonderful 3rd overall. At the presentation ceremony we were announced as winners of 'Team

of the Carnival'. Our players and supporters were absolutely fantastic all day and highlighted that Sport truly is not just about what happens on the field. Thank you to Wallaby Ben Daley for presenting the trophy. St Andrew's Rugby is on the move!

Equestrian St Andrew's Equestrian just went to a new level with the College hosting our inaugural St Andrew’s Showjumping event on Saturday 14th May. It was an absolutely fantastic day for the College and thrilling for our St Andrew’s Equestrian community. The feedback about the event has been overwhelmingly positive. I cannot speak highly enough of Kerrie Johnstone who did an absolutely brilliant job coordinating the event and running a super day. She was nothing short of outstanding and an absolute credit to the College. Alex and Bec Watson were equally brilliant in ensuring the event was professional and beautifully presented. We are incredibly fortunate to have their facility, Equestrian skills and expertise on our doorstep and I know they spent many hours preparing the site and we are very extremely grateful. The staff at Equathon were wonderful and many volunteered their time on behalf of the College. Nine Schools were represented involving 42 riders from 8am – 5pm – Matthew Flinders AC, St Andrew’s AC, Sunshine Coast Grammar School, Good Shepherd LC, Glasshouse Country Christian College, Victory College, St John’s College, Coolum High School and Blackhall Range School

The St Andrew’s riders on the day were superb with many ribbons presented and St Andrew’s winning the team event .

Congratulations to Georgia Laird, Ellie Shaw, Margot Hulse, Zaelia Dunsdon, Kitty Kelly, Emma Moore, Maya Hoolihan and India Krattinger, I know that Sophie Bosworth, Riley MacKeown and Lilly Tindal would have loved to have been involved but sadly were unable to. Even though they couldn’t compete, their contribution on the day was super.

The support and assistance by all Andrew’s Equestrian families

was truly wonderful. Special thanks to the Tindal Family and Bakers Delight Noosa for their support of the event.

Thank you to the many staff at St Andrew’s who also came along and assisted – Mrs Mel Rothman, Mrs Anita Close, Mr Alex McConnell, Mr Stuart Koy, Mr Jim Scott and Mr Brad Bowen.

Thank you also to Nathan who manned the BBQ all day. Thank you to Mr Chris Ivey who came out and witnessed a great afternoon and presented the final trophies of the day.

Special thanks

also to Tania Lee, Alan and Glenn for their work in setting up on Friday and packing away on Monday.

They take great pride in ensuring all our events and so professionally presented.

There are more photos here

What the images show is what a wonderful Sport Equestrian is.

They show young people out active all day and loving their sport. Equestrian encompasses so much, but it is unique with regards to discipline and responsibility and the horses were stunning.

The day also showed that Equestrian creates all the highs and lows that comes with playing Sport. It was a day that also generated a terrific sense of community from our fantastic Equestrian families. From timekeeping, scoring, supervising and directing – our families made sure that our guests were well looked after. It was truly a super day of Sport.

There was plenty of talk on the day about growing Schools Equestrian on the Sunshine Coast and St Andrew’s is happy to take a lead role in driving this and our event will again run in 2017.

Wonderful news of Australian Sport selections out of Canberra for St Andrew' s students. Year 12 girls Rheece Powell and Jacqui Sjogren have been announced in the Australian Schoolgirls Water Polo team. Rheece and Jacqui together with Maddi Coolican have just won Gold with their Queensland Team at the National Championships with a thrilling win over New South Wales. This is first Australian selection for Rheece who has been outstanding over the last 24 months. Jacqui

was again brilliant and makes her second National team. Congratulations also to Harrison Hill Nolloth who picked up silver playing for Queensland and went down to Western Australia. Five St Andrew's students have now made Australian Water Polo teams in the last 4 years - Tiana Sogaard Andersen, Nic Porter, Dylan Coolican, Rheece Powell and Jacqui Sjogren - a fantastic achievement.

Tennis

Congratulations to our Secondary Tennis teams who were competing all term in the Sunshine Coast Schools Tennis competition. All 4 teams has wonderful seasons and all 4 made the Quarter Finals with 3 teams into the Semi Finals and 2 teams into Final. The A team who were undefeated all year went down to strong Grammar team in the Final 5 sets to 3 but our B Division did the reverse and got up against Grammar 6 sets to 2 - honours were shared and

The Finals demonstrated the extremely high quality of Tennis and wonderful sportsmanship from all players. Well done all. Squads and matchplay resume in Term 3

Regional Selection A special mention also to Hamish and Toby Everard who had a very busy day of Tennis and played in the Sunshine Coast 12 years Schools Champs. They were both selected in the Sunshine Coast team to compete at the State Tennis Finals in Brisbane.

AFL

Our Year 5/6 Boys and Girls AFL teams enjoyed a super fun day organised by AFL Queensland as part of the State Cup. The event was at beautiful AFL fields. Our boys were physical and some of them were finding their feet as they are Rugby or Football players but were keen to have a go at AFL and they got better and better throughout the day and just missed out on a Finals place.

The Girls were superb making the Grand Final and going down against a strong St Thomas More team. Plenty of smiles all round and thank you to Mr Christesen and Mrs Bibby for their great work. A special mention to Cooper Langan and Jake Johnson who both represented The Sunshine Coast Schools at the Queensland Carnival. Impressively Jake went on to be selected n the Queensland team to compete at the National Titles.

Cross Country Congratulations to the entire St Andrew’s Cross Country Team of 107 runners who competed so superbly at the Sunshine Coast Independent Schools Cross Country Championships. It was a fabulous day with both the Primary and Secondary teams coming away as Independent District Champions. It was an absolutely superb day of running and every single team member contributed to the overall success for the College. The many weeks of training and hours of hard work certainly paid off and there were so many outstanding individual achievements. Thank you to all families for your support of Cross Country as the wonderful tradition of St Andrew's running continues. The Primary team has now won the overall trophy 11 times - 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2005.
The Secondary team has now won the event in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The students were wonderful and I spoke to the team prior to running that they had an opportunity to make the most of the event and give 100% and without fail, every student did just that. I am a firm believer that you can not only learn a lot about yourself as a person, but also lot about other people from a Cross Country event and the performance on Wednesday made many people proud to be associated with a great group of young people from the College. It is of course a team effort and thank you to Mrs Porter, Mrs Powell, Mrs Bowen and Mr Jones on the day and to our course marshals, Callum and Rory. Thank you also to Nick Croft for his brilliant work with the team with the support of Mrs Bowen and Mr Austin over the last few months and through the holidays. Thank you families for your support with training, fuelling and preparing the students. It truly is a team effort! Lastly to the students – thank you for representing yourselves and the College so proudly. The St Andrew’s Running culture is very special.

Football

A lot has happened over the past term within St Andrew’s Football. Due to wet weather some games and training sessions were cancelled which only gave our players more energy and determination to get out on the field each week.

Our junior divisions continue to demonstrate the meaning of team sport with plenty of smiles, laughter and hi-fives. With many super stars it is exciting knowing that the future of St Andrew's Football will be strong. Our U13 Boys had a thrilling last game game of Term 2 with an equaliser scored by Cambell McDiarmid in the final seconds of the game. Cambell was quickly surrounded by his team mates, enjoying a special moment of triumph, securing a draw against strong opposition. Our U16 Girls had a convincing win over Cooroora on the last day of Term 2 with a final score of 4 – 1. Emma Jackson scored an amazing three goals to help secure their win. The team have worked hard all season with their training and games, their determination is paying off and is well deserved. A big shout out of appreciation to both Ed Parfitt and Nigel Jackson for their hard work in guiding the girls this season. Their dedication to the team is reflective in the way the girls play football in such a friendly and supportive environment. Well done to all teams and supporters on a super Term 2

Another special mention is needed for Callum “Scoops Hutton. Callum has been one of St Andrew's Gap Students for the past 12 months. He has been coach to the U9 Red team this season and will be greatly missed by all. He has successfully passed on his can-do attitude

to his football team who will miss his coaching. Callum has always been there to offer a helping hand and to have a friendly conversation. Upon returning to the UK Callum will be studying a degree in Sports & Exercise Science and we wish him all the best in his future studies.

Football continues in Term 3 and there are quite a few catch up matches due to the wet weather later in Term 2. Keep an eye on updated fixtures. All fixtures will finish at the end of August for teams so still lots more fun to be had out on the Football field.

Netball

Secondary Netball 2016 concluded with some excellent results for our secondary teams. From 14 teams we had five playing in semi-finals with two eventual grand final winners. St Andrew's Open Red dominated the whole season and remained focused to become Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools Netball Competition Premiers in their division. Junior Cherry were also strong the whole season and fought hard to take out the 2016 Grand Final in their division. Well done to all teams who participated in this secondary competition, some outstanding displays of team work, determination and skill was shown by all, you should be proud. A big thanks to all of our dedicated coaches for another successful season, without you it would be difficult for our Girls to enjoy the team experience and to further their skills. Congratulations to the following Girls for their selection in the 2016 St Andrew's Vicky Wilson Cup Team: Jordan Kath, Jenna Kath, Rheece Powell, Maddy Coolican, Kate Ansell, Libby St Baker, Zoe Dick, Yvette Parker, Ellie Deegan, Robbie DeVincenzo. This team will compete at the regional carnival on Thursday 28 July to advance through to the State carnival.

Special mention to Robbie DeVincenzo for her selection in the 2016 Netball Queensland regional squad and for her selection in the 17yrs District team this year. Also to Darci Stone, Kate Condon and Kendall Sykes for their inclusion in the Suncoast Lynx Junior development squad. Well done Abby Weldon for her selection in the 12yrs District team. We currently have 22 St Andrew's netballers representing Coolum Districts and in preparation to compete at the Junior State carnival in July.  We certainly have some very talented netballers at St Andrew's.

Primary Netball With the last centre pass taken for our Primary teams, the season again has been a huge success with many happy young netballers and families. While our Years 2Â to 5 teams have been playing in a non-competitive competition, it is certainly obvious that St Andrew's is strong and present!! All of these teams showed tremendous enthusiasm and have responded very well to our dedicated coaches who have done a fabulous job. Well done to our Year 6 teams, Diamonds, Road Runners and a Year 7 team Red Dogs for making semi finals. Road Runners finished Runners up in their Grand final.

Congratulations to the following Girls who have been selected to represent St Andrew's at the 2016 Samsung Primary Schools Cup in October: Year 6 team, Perry Harris, Cecilia McCarthy, Marcella Donger, Maddy Bebbington, Lili Naudin-Dovey, Jessica Caffery, Ella Horsecroft, Zyali Rubilis and Jemima Brommage; Year 5 team, Katelyn McManus, Molly

Wandery-Jones, Lucy Bowen, Sarah Gordon, Ava Butler, Elodie Dennison, Grace Scammels, Georgia Eadie, Sienna Hartnett and Kelly Smith. Last but not least, a huge thanks to all netball parents for allowing your girls to participate and for giving your time to make sure they could train and play, your support is invaluable.

St Andrew's Netball Club

With only three teams playing in the Sunshine Coast Netball Association competition on a Saturday morning, we have had some varied results however as our future team numbers grow along with player depth this competition will also be one in which St Andrew's will certainly have a presence. This competition is a very

strong one for Junior netballers on the Sunshine Coast and our teams have been graded quite high and displaying some terrific netball week in and week out. This season is only half way through, so I would like to congratulate these teams for their hard work to date and to encourage them to finish the season strong. Thanks everyone for a fabulous 2016 season and I hope to see you all courtside for an even bigger and better 2017

Another very successful year in Sailing with a record six (five secondary and one primary) St Andrew’s teams entering the Stratogen Interschool Dinghy Regatta held on 11 and 12 June. Teams competed against 25 other teams from Sunshine Coast Grammar, Matthew Flinders, Immanuel, Sunshine Beach State High and Noosa Pengari Steiner. Maja Poff and Harriet Simpson led the other St Andrew’s Teams of Kye Evans and Harry Jenner, Alice Simpson and Sophie Rogers, Bailley Wood and Maxim Bock, Logan Gray and Hazel Hendry, Oscar Hendry and Max Rosing throughout the weekend competition, helping with team

organisation and boat preparation. Skippers Kye Evans and Logan Gray were most successful placing first and second in their pool on Sunday morning and progressing into the final. All teams sailed extremely well and were crowd favourites due to their sportsmanship on the water and exemplary behaviour on shore.Special thanks again to Paul Blundell and the friendly staff at Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club for hosting the interschool regatta. St Andrew’s has a strong relationship with the club through our recreational sports program and sailing coaches traineeships.

Basketball

Congratulations to all 8 teams who competed in the Noosa Basketball season throughout Term 2. Our young U14 boys teams have developed really well against much older teams as did our U16 Boys teams who really honed their individual and team skills. Both our U16 Girls teams made the Semi Finals with U16 Red making the grand Final at the time of writing this. Both U18 Boys teams also made the Semi Finals with our Red team going down in the Grand Final. We now move on to the Schools competition which begins in Week 1, Term 3. A big thank you to Fletch, Mrs Mel Rothman, Mrs Ian Jones, Mrs Wendy Hunt, Mr Marc Brenner, Mr Anthony Jenkins and Mitch and Cj Regan for their great work. Special thanks to all St Andrew’s students who have officiated all season.

Australian Selection

Emily Nicholas and Jack Payne are the very latest St Andrew's students to be selected for Australia. They will represent Australia in Athletics at the upcoming Oceanic Melanesian Games in Fiji. This is such a deserved selection for two wonderful athletes and students. Jack is enjoying a super year, his selection comes after placing 2nd at the Australian Juniors Athletics Championships earlier in the year in the U/18 Men’s Discus Event. Jack has been juggling both national Athletics and also his U18 Queensland AFL commitments this year. Emily is a brilliant Javelin thrower and her selection is reflective of her wonderful State and National success over recent years. Our very best wishes to Jack and Emily in Fiji.

Special thanks to our First Olympian

Jake Packard We were delighted to welcome back Jake as our guest speaker at our 14th Foundation Day and he also presented Rafter House with the overall Diamond Dash Trophy. We wish Jake well at the Rio Olympic Games where he will be representing Australia in the 100m Breaststroke and 4x 100m Medley Relay.

Thankyou for a wonderful Term 2
