What a brilliant win for our Super Secondary Swim team! It came down to the last few relay events but the team did it. Champions for 2017! Competing against 11 Sunshine Coast Independent District Schools our team competed so brilliantly. There were PB’s, gutsy swims and new records set by our 16 years Boys Medley team. Alek Taylor broke the 100m Freestyle record in a time of 57.71. He joins a very special group of students who hold District records which include former St Andrew's students: Jake Packard, Remy Fairweather, Scarlet Sykes, Nick Parchert and Joe Carty. I was incredibly proud to see how well the team conducted themselves both in and out of the pool – that made the day plenty of fun!

AFL Champions A brilliant day by our Senior Boys AFL team as they went unbeaten to win the Sunshine Coast round of the Queensland Schools AFL Cup. They played 2 pool matches defeating Siena and Good Shepherd and went on to beat Maroochydore in the Semi Final to
come up against Matthew Flinders in the Grand Final. It was a great contest with St Andrew's winning 34-23 in the end. The boys now play the winner of the Wide Bay Region to hopefully continue their run. A huge thanks to AFLQ School Footy and AFL Sunshine Coast for a terrific day. Well done boys
Loving the buzz about St Andrew's AFL in Term 1. In Week 6 our boys got out there and our Junior boys had a great carnival o losing only 1 game but importantly really
enjoyed playing AFL, being part of a team and representing St Andrew's. Thanks again to AFLQ School Footy and AFL Sunshine Coast for a really super day. Our Senior girls
will be involved next term. Thanks Mr C, players and families for your wonderful support.
GIRLS AFL
What a day of AFL for our Girls absolutely loved it! Lost only one game but importantly had plenty of fun at the Sunshine Coast AFLQ School Footy champs. Well done Girls on a great day and thanks to AFL Sunshine Coast and AFLQ School Footy for another terrific event.
Bond were physical and seemed to have more energy than us and it was a relief when our pack created an opportunity for Joe Wikaira to break through and open the scoring. Tim Bain knocked over the extras to take Saints into a 7-0 lead. Bond hit back well and started to get on top of our forward pack. A misdirected offload landed in the grateful arms of the Bond winger who strolled home to level the score.
U12 Saints Rugby shine at Armidale Rugby Festival A magical weekend
in Armidale came to an end with a very happy, but shattered group of Under 12's arriving back at St. Andrews late on Sunday night. Whilst it was aching bodies that trudged off the team bus, the ear to ear smiles told a story of a weekend of enjoyment and unbelievable success for a team that had mixed it with Australia's best Under 12 rugby players.
knowing that our preparation had been good. The team were ready to go and getting to sleep proved to be a challenge!
Saturday morning
The long journey down to Armidale seemed to go quickly as the players and coaches excitement was clear to see. What position would they be playing? How good are Scots College? Where will we be sleeping?!! A million questions soon helped pass the time!
arrived and the draw looked to be a good one for Saints. With our first game not until 10.30am it gave the squad an opportunity to check out the weekends opposition. Our friends from Grammar were first up representing Sunshine Coast rugby and were giving it all against some very tough opposition. Saints first opponents were Bond Pirates from Brisbane and a small pitch was always going to make running rugby difficult.
We arrived late afternoon and the players took in the wonderful setting that is The Armidale School. Some schools were out training, others were walking about, we were just happy
We came out the traps strongly and held onto the ball well. Our big forwards were equally matched in size and it was evident that this would be a tough opening fixture for us.
At half time the coaches asked for more. Bond were starting to dictate proceedings and our pack simply hadn't clicked into gear. As the second half went on Saints were under real pressure and, with our backs to the wall, we displayed character that would help to carry us through the weekend. Reggie Hammick epitomized this with two minster hits on the big Bond forwards. The final whistle was a relief but as the first try scorers, Saints took the points as a win. Maybe we were second best, definitely we were nowhere near our best but our courage in adversity and physicality in defense said a lot about the qualities of this squad. It was time to regroup before a meeting with our old foe, Maroochydore Swans. The break for lunch did not appear to help us as we started slowly. Maroochydore looked like a team on a mission and their forwards were dominating the breakdown with controlled but aggressive clearing out. This laid a platform for their talented backline and only
determined one on one tackling kept the game scoreless. Maroochydore finally got their reward just before half time with a well taken try and would head in to the half time break with a deserved 5-0 lead. In truth, it was difficult to see at this point where the Saints next try was going to come from. Some stiff words at halftime did little to rally the troops as the second half started in the same vein with Maroochydore seeing the majority of possession. We needed some inspiration and it was provided by Joe who scooped the ball off his toes, deep in our own half and rounded the Maroochydore team to score under the posts. 7-5 up and coach Fabio was laying down the law to our forward pack. This moment proved to be the turning point for our forwards as they went on to dominate for the rest of the tournament. W i t h t h e f o r w a r d s n o w fi r i n g , Maroochydore started to tire and simply couldn't get their hands on the ball. By the time Jackson Westphal scored a wonderful solo effort with minutes to go, Maroochydore looked spent. Once again Saints would feel r e l i e f a t t h e fi n a l w h i s t l e . Maroochydore could count themselves very unlucky to have lost the game and were understandably flat as the players exchanged handshakes. Maroochydore are an excellent team and will no doubt be back with a vengeance as the SCRU season gets underway.
Two games remained against the top two sides in the group, Sydney private schools St Patrick's College and The Scots College. First up was St Pats. In short, Saints never looked back after beating Maroochydore. The first half demolition of St Pats had the neutrals applauding and our rampaging forwards were at the heart of it. Dan Cashman and Matt Cashman led the charge and the rest of the forwards were only too happy to follow. Rhys Coolican was back to his best and seemed to be at every breakdown. Sam Lambert was again the turnover king stealing possession at regular intervals. Joe got the scoreboard ticking over with a typically strong run and quick thinking by Andrew Doyle saw him tap and score under the
posts. Richie Poa jinked his way over for a smart try in the corner after excellent work by centre, Angus Campbell-Balkin. Joe soon got his second and Finn O'Reilly's darting run made it 28-0 at half time. Fletcher Fairbanks and Joel Broderick were leading the tackle count as the black and yellow shirts could find no way through. Finally we were seeing the real Saints and the power and pace was a pleasure to watch. All credit to St Pats who came out and fought hard in the second half. The teams traded a try apiece with Joe completing a fine hat trick. The final score was a resounding 33-7 win but this was a performance which made everyone else start asking, "who are these Saints?". The final game was quickly upon us and Saints would definitely benefit from the short break.
Sydney's Scots College lay in wait and only the best from Saints would be good enough. Scots College have dominated the GPS rugby landscape in Sydney for some time and the outcome of this game would give us an indication of just how good this Saints team really was. The match itself contained a level of play that I'd not seen in under 12 rugby, ever. Committed defence from both teams, ball handling of the highest caliber and a structure of gameplay that belied these young players years. The first try was always going to be crucial in a game where missed tackles were scarce and once again, it was Joe who made the decisive line break.
A set move in midfield was perfectly executed by captain Zach Jones and Angus, mesmerizing the Scots defenders to send Joe through a hole to score. Now chasing the game, Scots had to open things up but as the game got stretched it simply played into Saints hands.
Our forwards were now at a different level entirely. Jemima Ward and Lewis Gray made immediate impacts as they came on in the forwards, both working tirelessly around the park. Cooper Law was looking every bit a flanker in his new position and as a collective group, the forwards were simply formidable. The interval changed nothing with Saints relishing the chance to pit their wits against the best. A smart cross kick from Zach was well taken by Jimmy Jackson, who still had much to do. Quick feet and a burst of pace took Jimmy through the defensive pack and he sprinted away to improve the score to 21-0. By the time Joe completed the scoring, and his second hat trick of the day, Saints were rampant and had made a massive statement in beating a shell shocked Scots outfit that was full of quality players. The final whistle was met with cheers of joy from players and supporters and the Scots parents were equally complimentary in their praise of the performance they had just witnessed. Four wins from four and a Sunday morning final against rugby powerhouse The Southport School quickly became the next focus.
Sleeping was not so much trouble on the Saturday night!!!
Sunday arrived and one last effort was required. The players were determined and full of confidence. Several spectators had been drawn to watch this intriguing match up of the unknown team from the Sunshine Coast against the GPS giant. Many thought this might be one step too far but the players had different ideas.
After two immense displays of power, our pack was playing with complete confidence. Several controlled phases created the platform for our backs to attack and Angus, Joe and Zach took full advantage. After knocking on the door a few times, Saints eventually saw a chink in the armour and Joe crossed under the posts to get the scoreboard moving. This seemed to lift TSS and they came back strongly. This was a wonderful test for Saints and momentum continued to switch between the two teams. Despite strong defense, TSS hit back with a try of their own and with the scores level it was anybody's game to win. The coaches talked about 'pride' and asked for one final effort at the break. As they had done all weekend Saints answered the call.
Joe completed a fine individual weekend as he scored his 10th try of the tournament. A fantastic achievement and one which did not go unnoticed by the neutrals. With minutes remaining Saints made the game safe and it was fitting that Captain Zach crossed for the winning try. Tim Bain completed a fine tournament with the boot and the final score of 21-10 meant that Saints had won the final and completed an unbeaten weekend against Australia's top schools. As the players found their proud parents, all involved could reflect on a simply amazing achievement from the Saints squad. A whole range of qualities had been on display from this gallant team. Whether it was finding a score when not playing well, or finishing teams off when the initiative had been seized, Saints rose to every challenge and more. Between ourselves Maroochydore and Grammar, Sunshine Coast rugby had really been put on the map. A big thank you should go to the parents who were
excellent throughout the weekend, allowing the players to have their own space and yet providing the loudest and most enthusiastic support of all the teams involved. I know that the players loved having you there. Thanks to Fabio Westphal for his unrivaled commitment to coaching and caring for this wonderful squad, parents and players are lucky to have his wisdom and passion. Finally thanks to all at The Armidale School for staging the most wonderful experience for U12 rugby players. In particular Will and Gaye for looking after us so well. For now, we look to the season ahead and the league campaign but it's safe to say that this weekend will never be forgotten by everyone involved from the Saints community. MR JIM SCOTT
