The Student Co-operative Association is the recognized student participation organization within the school. An S. C. A. does not conform to any one set mold or standard type in its organization, administration, and program of activities. Rather, stress is laid on adapting the type of organization to the program of activities needed in the particular school. Some general aims for the state S. C. A. this year are: to develop worthy citizens of the school, to pr ornate good sports rna nsh'i p' in interscholastic and community activities and to work with the school faculty in improving the guidance program for better understanding on the parts of students and parents. This year the Albemarle S. C. A. has named a committee to be responsible for the selling of tickets at basketball games. During the last semester the members plan to start an "Honor Code" and to get a motto. 84

The Band Club was created to foster interest in the multiple activities surrounding a Band. This year they have aided in collecting more information concerning the selection of uniforms. They have sponsored band movies, aided in buying needed equipment, chosen a music magazine, assisted the Band in its functions, and in general explored the possibilities for improvement. The members of this organization are eligible for a club letter upon having completed a speci1ied number of hours of work devoted to furthering the Band itself.

The A. H. S. Band first met in January, 1954. January, 1956 marks the beginning of its third year. The Band is composed of members whose homes are dotted like the spokes of a wheel from Greenwood to Cismont, from Burnleys to Alberene. Backed by the A. H. S. Band Parents Association, sponsors of the U. S. Marine Band Concerts, this small nucleus (above) should grow into a size and quality befitting Albemarle High School.

The Bible Club is, as its name implies, one which tries to promote a better understanding and love for the word of God among youth. The club feels that, to a great extent, this purpose has succeeded, for this year the regular membership was raised from a lower number to thirty-six, which is a definite sign of interest, created to a great extent by the members and officers of the two preceding years. This year the club began in December, as a project, to have a devotional period in the morning for the entire school. "We feel that in this way we begin the day right, and we hope that in the future this can be a continued practice." We have, during the year, learned a great deal about the various denominations of our members, which promotes understanding. Our hope for the future is that our club might continue to promote true Christian living, thus making a better America." BIBLE CLUB OFFICERS ARE: President . Vice-President. The "Albemarle Highlight" was edited by the Publications Club during 1953, 54', and part of 55', before the Journalism Class was organized in September of 1955. The new Journalism Class, taught by Mrs. McVey, consists of nine students. All the permanent class students and "beat" reporters assist in making the three-year-old ''Highlight'' a success. Among them are : Betty Tilley, Editor; Circulation Manager; Mildred Morris; Business Manager, Mary Virginia Woodson; Editorial Editor, Margaret Cutright; News Editor, Dot Napier; Sports Editor, Jimmy Statton; and Photographer, Tom Kelsey. Mrs. Herndon is the business staff advisor. Though the size of the paper has been changed this year, it has been met with enthusiasm. The "Highlight" is still a young paper, and although progress and improvement have seemed slow, it has come a long way since the first issue in 1953. 101
