The Office The office - a place for morning announcements, for calming worried parents, and for coordinating student activities and classes. The office is also a place of constant activity - phones ringing, secretaries monitoring student excuses, visitors coming and going. A solution to all problems

Throughout the year, students sought the advice of the guidance department on a variety of concerns. Sophomores needed program choices explained, juniors inquired about College Boards, and seniors just plain worried - about college choices, their vocations, their futures. Besides rearranging schedules and counseling individuals, the department sponsored College Night as well as administered SAT and Achievement tests periodically.

New program combines two approaches The English department was designed this year to deliver the best of two worlds. A semester-long program of American and English literature, followed by a semester of electives combined to better fulfill student interests and needs. An Advanced Placement class was also instituted to answer the needs of the academically gifted. Individual classes were also able to attend productions given by the Virginia Museum, tour the University of Virginia's Rare Book Room , and talk to poet, Ric Masten.

The world of mathematics extends from basic algebra to advanced calculus , with tension climaxing at the annual math contest. Logical or abstract, triangles and sines may presently seem useless to math students. But practical application of this knowledge ultimately enables AHS students to balance their checkbooks!

While Biology I classes meticulously disect frogs with butter knives , Biology II classes study the effects of contaminated distilled water on yeast growths . Individual and team In the long run , a healthy body and mind is probably more advantageous for a student than a world of knowledge. The Health and Physical Education department encourages rules of safety, responsibility , and physical as well as mental fitness . Students are able to participate in individual activities , such as track and tennis, or be part of a team effort in flag football and field hockey. A sophomore's favorite class is undoubtedly Driver's Education , as the student waits impatiently for the magical sixteenth birthday to arrive.

Students assume civic duties The goal of the Social Science department this year was to make the various studies meaningful to each student. Classes analyzed political literature and documents , exercising the skill of critical thinking in place of spoon-fed learning. Classroom instruction was reinforced by field trips and participation as members of mock juries for U.Va. Law School Moot Court trials. County Government Day gave students the unique opportunity to perform duties of various county officials for one day.

Band invited to Mardi Gras Encouraging and developing the creative talents are the functions of such departments as art, drama, and music. The Art department periodically featured the work of local artists and students attended art exhibitions. Drama students were busy with the musical Bye Bye Birdie, the State Drama Festival, and a series of one act plays. The symphonic bands and the choir gave several concerts throughout the year. The big excitement among band members was an invitation to perform in the 1976 Mardi Gras in New Orleans . Besides two thousand new books, the Media Center obtained equipment to tape special PBC television programs for student viewing.

Opportunity for cultural insight There is something about the discipline, " foreign language," that implies a variation from the everyday tedium of regular classes . The department provides AHS students with the opportunity to become a part of different cultures and master a new language. The road to fluency is a difficult one , but there are many rewards. Foreign forensics, language contests and honor societies indicate the outstanding abilities of AHS students. Clubs, international dinners, Christmas assemblies , and trips to Washington embassies have contributed to make foreign language a vital part of student involvement at AHS.

Diversity is the thing at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Center. Students learn by doing from experienced instructors in a variety of fields, ranging from Auto Mechanics to Cosmetology. In simulated classroom situations, students learn to use equipment and techniques they can later utilize in adult life. Directly upon graduation, students are prepared to pursue a career in their chosen field.

1975 cited as turn-around season

197 5 seemed to be a turn-around year for the Albemarle Patriots' Football team. After suffering two consecutive losing seasons , the Patriots managed to end the tough Commonwealth District schedule with a record of 4-6. Under the leadership of captains Vernon Maupin and, Mike Wade, the team enthusiastically worked to strengthen weak areas . The great improvement shown by the defensive team was due to the concentrated efforts of a new defensive coach, Joe Bingler. Head Coach , Jim Arbaugh commented upon the 1975 team's performance: "A special thanks to the seniors for sticking with us through the hard years and giving us the leadership and dedication needed to put the program back on its feet. To them , my personal promise: Albemarle football is on its way back."

Crippled by inexperience and lack of time to organize, the J.V. team finished their season with a 1-5 record. After only four days of practice, the team suffered defeat at the hands of the Madison J.V.'s. One highlight of the season was the team's amazing comeback against Charlottesville in their second encounter.

Patriot hooters achieve The AHS soccer team ended a successful1975 season with a record of 9-4-1. According to Coach Len Hrica, the turning point of the team's career was in 1974, and it has been steadily improving since then. Outstanding players on the varsity team were David Vermillion, Butch Walker, Tom Simpson, Robert Meadows and Tom Seldon. Other seniors who helped arouse the team's spirit were Danny Ivory, Frank Ruiz, Tim Ryalls and Tom Jay. Coached by Chris Malone , the JV team also had an encouraging season , ending with a 6-2 record. JV standouts were Paul VanSylke, Lewis Farina, Tom Farrell, Drake Van deCastle, Scott Martin and Richard Cook.

Thinclads overcome slow start Coached by Paul Cale, the Cross Country team overcame early seasonal difficulties and finished the season with a 7-7 record. Pacing the thinclads was student-teacher, Max White, one ofthe finest U.S. distance runners and the defending U.S. champion of the 50 mile event. Led by M.V.P. Maverick Granger, and seniors, Brett Figgatt and Lindy Bain, the team earned entry into the tough Commonwealth District Meet. Girls twice outscore Black Knights The AHS Girls' Basketball team enjoyed a winning season taking the third place in the Commonwealth District Tournament. During the course of the season, the Lady Patriots compiled a 13-7 overall record, defeating arch-rival Charlottesville High School in both encounters. Leading scorer, Donna Sprouse, was elected to the All-Tournament team and received an All-District Honorable Mention. Coaches Brenda Langdon and Susan Miller will miss the fine efforts of seniors, Tricia Armistead, Lauren Pettit, Lisa Rexrode and Donna Sprouse. 1

J.V.'s lead Commonwealth District The Albemarle Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball team had an extremely successful season this year. Led by captains, Vicki Wood and Willie Wilson, the team posted a 15-3 overall and a 12-2 Commonwealth District record. Under the leadership of Coach Marcie Mason, the team captured first place in the Commonwealth District. Through their combined efforts, the Lady Patriots defeated arch-rival Charlottesville High School twice this year in impressive shows. Varsity coaches look forward to working with this new talent.

Inexperience cripples Hockey Team

This year for the first time, AHS added a Girls' Hockey team to the athletic roster. The girls suffered a disappointing season as they were scheduled against more experienced teams. Under the patient coaching of Dottie Bohannon, the girls increased their playing skills both individually and as a team. The team looks to co-captain , Barb Bledsoe, for leadership on the hockey field next year.

Patriots win second straight

For the second consecutive year, the Albemarle Patriots won the regular season Commonwealth District Championship, although they were not picked at the beginning of the season to retain their title. Due to the excellent coaching team of Head Coach Frankie Allen and Assistant Coach Jamie Brown , the Patriots showed a much improved effort. The Patriots quickly developed a winning formula, even though the team was young . Greg Maynard, Mike Mitchell and David Bates gave the team the needed depth. Robert Meadows supplied strong leadership even though he was injured during the tournament co~petition. Evan Williams, the stand-out performer, was named to the First Team All District, to the First Team All Northwest Region, and was selected MVP of the Commonwealth District. Rising senior talent, Phillip Brown and Lester Perry, may help the Patriots do it yet a third time! Coach Dave Hill , in his last year with the team , coached the JV's to an outstanding 16-5 record. Tri-captains Joe Carey, David Hamer and Keith Hawkins will be welcomed newcomers to the varsity team next year. 2

Indoor Track Team

After losing three All-Americans , the indoor track team finished with a disappointing season compared to the past few years. However, considering the inexperience of the team and the injuries to some of the members , the team put forth a very pleasing and constructive effort. The team was strong in dual and tri-meets , but less effective in larger meets. Coach Gay has done a good job in bringing the team to a competitive level and has a broader outlook for the outdoor season. Leading the team this year were: seniors , F. Miles, B. Figgatt, T . Conrad Birdie hits AHS stage Rock 'n roll idol, Conrad Birdie hit the AHS stage this fall in all his skin-tight satin, hip-shaking glory. Portrayed by Mark Maslyk, Conrad joined the efforts of his composerpublic relations man, played by Jim Moore, in pulling off a gigantic publicity stunt. The duo, with Girl Friday Sue Tewksbury, descend on a small Ohio town for Conrad's last public appearance before entering the Army draft . Tracey Williams played the girl lucky enough to receive Conrad's last kiss. The enthusiastic production was directed by the talented Mrs. Marcia Dobbs , assisted by student-directors, Mark Maslyk and Art McDermott. 1

The evening of January 16th, AHS was treated to presentations by Mime's Bigger Than Yours Pantomime Troupe. For those not familiar with this theater form , pantomime is a wordless communication, expressed solely through the performer's movements and gestures . The troupe's style is a combination of the classical French approach and the more casual vaudeville school of American mime. AHS 's mime artists have performed in Virginia and North Carolina, and have been invited to the International Theater Arts Conference in Muncie, Indiana to be held in June.

highlight musical year

Under the talented and versatile direction of Mr. Elmer Sampson, the Symphonic, Stage and Concert Bands performed another exciting year of seasonal concerts and band competitions. Because of a fine statewide reputation, the band received invitations to perform in several Spring Blossom festivals, numerous parades, and at the New Orleans Mardi Gras. The Concert Choir and Mixed Chorus, directed by Mr. David Blanchard, received high marks in All-Regional competition, and staged several well-received concerts . 1

Tutoring services provided by

Classroom interest in foreign language and culture expands to active support and participation in the French and Latin Clubs. Club members joined in many exciting activities, including the International Dinner and Christmas caroling at various local nursing homes . French and Latin club members were also involved in homecoming festivities, placing first and second in the Homecoming Float Competitions. The French Honor Society provided tutoring services and awarded two academic scholarships.

The Chess, Guitar, Young Democrats and Concerned Black Youth clubs are groups drawn together out of common interest in a skill or concern. Chess and Guitar club members hoped to master more sophisticated skills, as well as stimulate enjoyment from their hobbies. Concerned Black Youth promotes pride and interest in black culture through group discussion on racial problems and the Negro cultural heritage. CBY also co-sponsored a dance with the SCA. Students interested in the fine arts were able to join such clubs as the Critique Club, Crafts Club, Art Club , Albemarle Players and Thespians , and the Photography Club. The Art and Crafts clubs added to the school's permanent collection displayed in the hallways, the office, and the media center. The Outdoor, Erutan , and Ecology Club members were involved with the preservation and enjoyment of the great outdoors. Scheduled trips included various picnics and overnight hikes. The Bicycle Club planned six trips throughout the year , the biggest excursion being a three day venture to the Peaks of Otter. Sports related activities

The sports-minded found numerous clubs to enhance their interests. The exciting Junior-Senior Powderpuff game, sponsored by the GAA , ended in a tie. Through the enthusiasm of club members, Lacrosse is one of the up and coming varsity sports. The Rally Club members practiced precision driving under set limits on local rallies.
