Market Towns In Surrey you will find bustling market towns surrounded by sleepy villages nestled in the Surrey Hills and all just 30 miles south of London – but you could be a world away. Within the county you will find modern shopping malls, cobbled high streets and twisting lanes; high street brands alongside unique crafts, and all just a short distance from Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Surrey is steeped in history and you will not need to go far to find timber-framed buildings, castle keeps and an abbey ruin. Surrey was the playground of some of England’s medieval monarchs and even many small villages have royal links. The stunning landscape has inspired artists, architects and gardeners for generations and the Arts and Crafts Movement thrived here. Tennyson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Lewis Carroll, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll all spent time in Surrey and much of their work is still evident. Look out for farmers markets selling fresh local produce and craft markets showcasing local arts and crafts. In Guildford, Farnham, Dorking, Godalming, Leatherhead and Woking you are never far away from beautiful countryside, offering glimpses of rolling fields, wooded hillsides and glittering waterways. Surrey is the perfect place to combine a morning browsing in the shops with an afternoon stroll along an idyllic rural trail – you could also take a break at one of the excellent restaurants or cafes where local produce and fair-trade choices are often on the menu.

Farnham Visit Farnham – A unique Georgian town offering a perfect balance of old meets new. The historic market town of Farnham sits on the Surrey/Hampshire border and is a bustling town with an intriguing history. This special Georgian town is the perfect combination of old meeting new, and has something unique to offer everyone and anyone. Farnham has a magnificent history, and is blessed with Stone Age, Roman and Saxon dwellings which can be found here. Many of the Georgian buildings conceal structures of Tudor or even earlier times. Not least, the town is crowned by a 12th Century castle overlooking the heart of Farnham, built in 1138 AD by Henry de Blois, grandson of William the Conqueror and has been occupied for nearly 900 years, mostly by the powerful Bishops of Winchester. Monarchs from King John to Queen Victoria have all visited, whilst Henry VIII was a regular guest during his boyhood. When Elizabeth I visited, she bought her Court along too and ran the country from Farnham for six months! Farnham is proud to be home to many well known characters and faces over the years, from Jonathan Swift and the radical journalist William Cobbett, to John Henry Knight builder of Britain’s first petrol-powered motor vehicle. Many people also won’t know that the magically famous story of ‘Peter Pan’ was written whilst J. M. Barrie occupied Black Lake Cottage on the Tilford Road. The cobbled streets of Farnham boasts over 200 shops and businesses, including beautiful boutiques to renowned national chains, banks, supermarkets, hair & beauty salons, market squares and delicatessens. Visitors can also enjoy international cuisine, family run delis and an array of drinking establishments, from traditional English pubs to sophisticated wine bars. Farnham is surrounded by outstanding parks and forestry such as Gostrey Meadow, Farnham Park, Frensham Ponds, Bourne Woods and the outstanding Victoria Gardens that won Best Community Garden in the South & South East In Bloom 2011 awards. These are the perfect places to enjoy a

leisurely walk, breathtaking cycle route or family picnic, attracting all sorts of wildlife and not to mention the A List celebrities who shoot films such as Harry Potter, Gladiator and Robin Hood within the magical Bourne Woods. Leisure and entertainment in Farnham is plenty, with the Farnham Leisure Centre in the very heart of the town and the brand new David Lloyd development just on the outskirts. Visitors won’t be short of entertainment with the Farnham Maltings exhibitions and fairs, award winning Museum of Farnham and the James Hockey Gallery at the University of the Creative Arts. During the summer months, local musical groups fill Gostrey Meadow with music every Sunday, whilst Central Car Park plays host to the wonderful Farmers’ Market on the fourth Sunday of every month. Godalming Arriving in Godalming, find TiCL Godalming on your smart phone for up-to-date information and news about what’s going on in the town. Local festivals abound, including the Summer Food Festival featuring foods from around the world and the Great Godalming Bake Off, a must for “foodies”. Godalming’s Christmas Festival and Lights’ Switch-on harnesses a traditional Christmas Market with a festival atmosphere. Many other events during the year include our Town Carnival (first Saturday in June).

Visit Godalming - an ancient market and coaching town delightfully situated on the picturesque River Wey, where to this day cattle graze on the water meadows and canal boats rest up against the wharf. Beautiful wooded hills rise steeply all around, forming a backcloth which greatly enhances the rural setting of the town. The town’s vibrant cultural heritage is reflected in the friendly Godalming Museum (free entry), which celebrates the work of Gertrude Jekyll, garden designer for Edwin Lutyens’ many commissions in the area and offers you the chance to learn more about Godalming in detail. First recorded as “a thriving community with three watermills” in the Domesday Book of 1086 and "of the family or clan of Godhelm"; twelve hundred years later, the inhabitants of the town are still called "Godhelmians". In the 17th century the water mills made way for other industry. Framework knitting, quarrying (of the local bargate stone), tanning, leatherworking and paper manufacture became historically important industries in the town. In 1872 Godalming became home to Charterhouse School, one of the great historic schools of England, and the school’s impressive campus lies on the hill to the north of the town centre. Godalming is the town where Jack Phillips (1886-1912), wireless operator on the Titanic was born. Jack was first educated at Farncombe School, then the old Grammar School in Godalming town centre (now the Red Lion public house). Jack’s first job was at the Post

Office from where he progressed to Chief Marconi Officer on "RMS Titanic" and lost his life on 15th April 1912 when the ship sank on her maiden voyage after its infamous collision with an iceberg. Visit the newly restored Phillips Memorial Cloister, named in Jack’s memory; an Arts & Crafts building designed by Hugh Thackeray Turner and surrounded by planting designed by Gertrude Jekyll. The cloister and surrounding park is the world’s largest memorial to a single victim of the Titanic. Godalming boasts many local, wonderful assets such as National Trust attractions, sports and leisure facilities, historic and other places of cultural interest including Godalming’s iconic Pepperpot (the town’s symbol) dating from 1814. Throughout the summer, Godalming offers a series of guided Heritage Trails, giving a fascinating insight into Godalming’s past through its many historic buildings, interesting architecture and how various trades and businesses influenced the buildings as the town developed. Visit www.godalming-tc. gov.uk/heritage-walks for details (walks last around 60- 90 minutes). The beautiful River Wey represents an important part of Godalming's history. There are many ways of enjoying this lovely stretch of water. Riverside paths and then the towpath combine to create a leisurely, traffic-free route from Godalming town centre to the centre of nearby Guildford. Or, you can take a boat and enjoy a day spent messing about on the river.

Our pleasant, easily accessed High Street along with walks in our delightful countryside, our wealth of pubs, restaurants, our unique and individual shops make Godalming a fine place to visit. Whether taking afternoon tea, shopping in Church Street (well known for its appearance in the Hollywood film “The Holiday” starring Cameron Diaz and Jude Law), drinking in one of our quaint pubs or eating in any of our excellent restaurants, a warm welcome is always assured.

For more information on tourism, leisure and culture facilities in Godalming visit www.godalming-tc.gov.uk Godalming Town Council, Municipal Buildings, Bridge Street, Godalming, Surrey GU7 1HT Also visit the Godalming Visitor Information Centre, located within the Godalming Museum at: 109a High Street, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1AQ Visitor enquiries to: godalming.museum@waverley.gov.uk www.waverley.gov.uk/godalmingmuseum

Heritage Delving into Surrey’s past is a truly fascinating way to immerse yourself in the area. Spending an hour or more in any of the local museums (see page 23) will unlock times gone by and reveal how these places have been shaped by historic events. Many areas offer guided tours by experience guides who bring the local area to life. Tours vary from Ghost Tours, to strolls around the town taking all the hidden signs of the past. Learn about life in medieval times and famous (and infamous!) past residents – from Kings to scoundrels, industrialists to artists. Don’t miss the National Trust’s Dapdune Wharf and Shalford Mill, explore Brooklands Museum and step back in time at the Rural Life Centre. The Great Barn at Wanborough lies just to the north of the Hog’s Back. It is one of the largest and most important medieval barns in south east England. It was built in 1388 by the Cistercian monks of Waverley Abbey, five miles away, as part of a ‘grange’ - a farm which supplied the abbey itself. Waverley Abbey was closed down by King Henry VIII in 1536 but the barn has remained essentially as it was in the Middle Ages. Displays in the Great Barn mainly cover aspects of local history, including Wanborough’s role in training SOE (Special Operations Executive) agents for France in World War II.

The medieval Undercroft on Guildford High Street is one of the finest examples in the country. Dating from the end of the 13th century, this stone vaulted semi-basement is thought to have been a merchant’s shop, selling wine or expensive cloths or silk. Undercrofts like this are a feature of towns engaged in the import and export trade, and the merchant who built this Undercroft must have expected to deal with prosperous clients who sought luxury goods. There are traces of perhaps half a dozen Undercrofts in Guildford at the time that this one was built. They were very expensive and only a rich merchant could afford the masonry work, indicating that Guildford was very wealthy throughout the middle ages.

Stewards are available on the above open days to conduct tours of the hamlet including the barn and church. Visits by groups can be arranged on other dates.

French Brothers operate boat trips on the Thames from the Runnymede Boathouse. Trips include a boat service to Windsor as well as Hampton Court. The experience allows for passengers to arrive in style having had a relaxing boat trip that transports them to their chosen destination. If going to Windsor then one is free to visit the Town for shopping and lunch before retuning later in the day. With a shorter time ashore, those travelling to Hampton Court may disembark the boat and visit Cardinal Wolsey’s majestic palace, perhaps returning by public transport. Those returning on the boat benefit from a full day on the River. Alternatively there is a regular 45 minute return trip from The Runnymede Boathouse which also calls in at the Runnymede Pleasure Grounds. This trip is particularly suitable for those with small children. French Brothers also operate trips from other locations such as Windsor and Maidenhead.

A “Flavour Journey” perfectly describes dining at Drake’s, and is also the name of this Michelinstarred restaurant’s six course tasting menu. Steve Drake’s unusual flavour combinations have been praised by some of the UK’s top critics and the restaurant also holds the title Wine List of the Year in the 2013 Good Food Guide. A stylish interior, with soft, muted tones gives the perfect ambience for diners to appreciate leading edge food and excellent wines. A nine course Flavour Discovery menu is also offered, and vegetarian alternatives are always available.

Hugo’s is an informal restaurant with stylish surroundings and a friendly relaxed atmosphere. It’s known as one of the most hospitable restaurants in Woking. Our restaurant’s new modern a la carte menu, created by our Executive Chef, features an eclectic fusion of Continental and British food, and the wine list is as imaginative as it is extensive.
