A Stark Look at Addiction with

Our Community Discusses the Addiction Epidemic Page 8

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Inviting. Informing. Transforming our Community.

Above: Mary Ellen Icaza and Steve Pittman, President of the Board of Trustees.

I have just passed my one-year anniversary at Stark Library and we have so much to celebrate! Before I talk about all of the great things that are happening in our libraries this fall, I’d like to thank Stark County residents for understanding our need and voting to increase our property tax levy. We are so grateful for your trust in us and support of public libraries, and are looking forward to working together to Re|imagine Stark Library for the 21st Century. Every day in our nine branches and main library, thousands of people attend classes, learn how to use—or even build—computers, gather to discuss a book, play, study, learn how to write a resume, access the internet, or even just sit and relax. Did you know that 25% of households in Stark County do not have internet access? Our free public computers and Wifi access allow individuals to do necessary, everyday tasks that they may not have the resources to complete at home. Our Re|imagine project will touch all of our locations to make them more accessible for the changing needs of each individual community. We are investing in our locations so that they can be welcoming, safe spaces for the community to gather. We just finished our Summer Reading Program—A Universe of Stories. More than 5,000 children read over 30,000 books and logged more than 100,000 days of reading! Thousands of children and their families attended the finale event. This program helped these children to continue their learning throughout the summer and be ready for school in the fall. In September we’ll open our 2019–2020 Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books series season with Elizabeth Vargas. We’re also opening our new Maker Studio at the main library and will celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month with a new library card design! There’s so much going on at Stark Library this fall! I invite you to explore our program guide to see all that we have to offer.

We are excited to officially announce our Re|imagine Stark Library project. Over the next several years we will update and renovate our library buildings to make them more dynamic and community-centric. Each location is currently being evaluated to determine the needs of staff and patrons. We are working with HBM Architects, the firm that designed our Perry/Sippo, Plain, and Jackson locations, during this process. HBM is a nationally-recognized firm with a focus on library planning and design. Recently, Fred Olivieri Construction Company was chosen to be the Construction Manager at Risk for the entire Re|imagine project. Olivieri has nearly 60 years of extensive construction experience and is building our new Jackson Township branch. They will work closely with HBM and the library staff to determine the scope and schedule of all renovations.

Explores the ADDICTION Epidemic

What happened to my beautiful boy? To our family? What did I do wrong?

Those are the wrenching questions that plagued David Sheff’s journey through his son Nic’s addiction to drugs and tentative steps toward recovery. Each fall Stark County residents join together to read a common book and share ideas through lively—and challenging—community conversation. With 1 in 4 Stark County residents concerned with the growing addiction epidemic, this year’s book selection, Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction, by David Sheff is a timely topic.

8

Beautiful Boy offers raw insight into the world of addiction, relapse, and recovery—through the eyes of a parent watching their child spiral out of control. It was named Best Nonfiction Book by Entertainment Weekly, an Amazon “Best Books of 2008,” and won first place in the Barnes and Noble Discover Award in nonfiction. In 2018, it was adapted into a film starring Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet.

Meet Author David Sheff

In addition to being an avid advocate for drug and addiction awareness and recovery, Sheff is also the author of Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America’s Greatest Tragedy, HIGH: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs, Game Over, and is working on his next book, The Buddhist of Death Row: Finding Light in the Darkest Place.

Join us for a discussion as David Sheff talks about his book, Beautiful Boy, and shares his family’s story of helping their son overcome drug addiction. Followed by Q&A and book signing. 

Younger Readers Join in the Conversation With the growing drug epidemic, early education is more important than ever for kids and teens. Young readers will join in the One Book, One Community conversation and read and discuss HIGH: Everything You Want to Know About Drugs by David and Nic Sheff. High presents factual, evidencebased information about drugs, alcohol, and addiction in an easy to digest, age-appropriate manner. This book tells it as it is, with testimonials from teens and families who have lived through the addiction of a loved one, along with the cold, hard facts about the consequences of drugs and alcohol. It also offers tips on how to navigate peer pressure, outlets for stress, and stresses the potential consequences of experimenting.

THE REALITIES OF

AD D I C T I O N : It CAN Happen to You

Emmy-winning journalist Elizabeth Vargas shares her journey to sobriety A staggering 1.1 MILLION people, or 1 in 10 Ohioans, are facing a battle with alcohol or drug addiction. Addiction is a complex disease that doesn’t care where you’re from, what you do, or who you are. Your neighbor, friend, or even your child could be suffering—it can happen to anyone.

You may recognize Elizabeth Vargas as a hard-hitting journalist known for anchoring live, breaking news including Hurricane Katrina’s devastation and Emmywinning coverage of the Elian Gonzalez case. In 2016, Vargas went public with her struggle with alcoholism, anxiety, and recovery on a special edition of 20/20. She detailed her downward spiral and the high cost of her addiction— damage to her relationships and career—with honesty and vulnerability. Her bestselling memoir, Between Breaths, continues her story of healing. Vargas’ journey was not without setbacks, but with a strong support network and determination, she continues to be in recovery. She is a successful author, host on A+E Investigates, and speaks on her past to help break the stigma of mental health and addiction and misconceptions about the disease.
