FROM THE DIRECTOR
Spring 2020
It may not feel like it when you look out of your window at the grey skies of Ohio, but Spring is just around the corner. While you’re waiting for sunshine and warmer weather, there’s plenty to do to keep you warm—in mind, body, and spirit— at the library! I invite you to explore this guide to discover all that is happening here at your library. I’m so excited to welcome Newbery Award-winning poet, Kwame Alexander, as our next guest in the Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series. Kwame—who started writing at age 12 and has written 34 books—has great energy and a wonderful story to tell. I’m hoping he’ll be an inspiration to budding writers in our community. In addition, in the coming months we are welcoming dozens of authors to events at our branches, and our Author Fair is at Main Library on April 7. And don’t forget to stop in at one our branches during National Library Week, April 19–25, to take part in the special programming (listed throughout the guide). The Library Journal once again recognized us as a Star Library for 2019 for the 5th year in a row! Star Libraries are the best of the best in the United States, and we work hard in our community to live up to the expectation that this rating gives us. As part of our three-year strategic plan, we have established a set of values that we embody across our district. These values are our commitment to you to continue to be your Star Library in Stark County.
Mary Ellen Icaza, Executive Director/CEO Stark Library
OUR VALUES Respect We treat each person with dignity, regardless of race, gender, faith, politics, or status. Equal Access We help all people tap into the tools and resources they need. Serving with Excellence We go above and beyond in our efforts to meet the needs of all people. Confidentiality We always keep personal information safe and secure. Literacy We promote reading, writing, and thinking at every season of life. Collaboration We partner with others to enhance the community—within our branches and beyond our walls. Forward Thinking We proactively evolve, changing and transforming with the times, to better serve our community. Intellectual Freedom We foster a safe space in which varied ideas and beliefs can thrive amidst debate or dialogue. 2
Writing helps to get my thoughts on paper, especially when there are things I’m not ready to talk to anyone about, but writing it down and creating a story from my thoughts makes me feel a lot better. When I was writing Everywhere I Go, I could see myself in parts of the story in ways I never thought possible. —Skylar Hill, author of Everywhere I Go
Skylar was still in high school when she wrote her first book. She didn’t let her age stand in the way of having her voice heard. What’s stopping you? Get inspired by the talent in your own backyard at one of our local author events. Meet Skylar and dozens of other local authors at the Local Author Fair (next page).

Kwame Alexander
Poet Laureate & Bestselling Author Finding your place in the world isn’t easy. Kwame Alexander understands just how difficult it can be. That’s why he uses his platform as a megaphone for an often-overlooked audience—teenage boys. More specifically, African American teenage boys. Kwame knew what it was like trying to navigate growing up, meeting everyone’s expectations, and finding just where he fit in the world. Drawing on his experience as a teen, he decided to write outside the box. Taking a novel approach to his books, he wrote what he would have wanted to read when he was in school. By combining an unlikely pair— sports and prose—he captured the essence of being a teenager. Kwame grew up hearing his dad say, “If you’re your own authentic self, you’ll never go wrong.” Kwame’s dad was right. That advice has taken Kwame on an exciting journey — from writing his first poem at age 12 to releasing The Crossover at 46 —which earned him a Newbery Medal. 4
It was just announced that Kwame’s most recent book, The Undefeated, was chosen as the 2020 Caldecott Medal winner and named one of the Newbery Honor books! Kwame followed a somewhat unconventional path by choosing poetry as a career. It was a risky move. It could have left him a starving artist, but he’s thrived. He has successfully written 34 highly acclaimed books and is the Poet Laureate of LitWorld. Kwame knows where he fits in the world. He tackles the hard stuff head-on—jealousy, competition, and even death—in a relatable way. And it works. He draws you into his world and makes you feel heard.

for Writing Poetry
There are so many types of poetry: sonnets, limericks, haiku, slam, and the list goes on and on. Poetry is what you make it, and it’s for everyone. Kwame believes with his heart and soul that poetry is the basic building block of all writing. Here are some of his tips for getting started:
1
Read anything and everything.
2
Write every day. Anything at all .
3
Inform yourself. Learn about the world.
4
Be authentic. Just like Dad says.

I first heard the sound of a bassoon at a bluegrass festival when I was 10. It felt like someone was singing to me, and from that moment on, I knew what I wanted to do with my life—be a part of music. The bassoon gave me my voice and introduced me to the world of orchestral music, where I have found my home. Now, I have the joy of sharing the music that changed my life with my community. —Rachel Hagemeier, Canton Symphony Community Engagement and Education Manager
Rachel discovered her love of music as a child. As you can see, you can find your voice in the most unexpected ways. It just goes to show you’re never too young to discover how music can change your life. Inspire the next Mozart with these events hosted in partnership with the Canton Symphony Orchestra.

You don’t have to be a writer, poet, or musician to share your voice. You tell the world who you are through your creations. A quilter. A designer. An inventor. You’re whatever you want to be. That’s the wonderful thing about creating—you’re only limited by your imagination. You could learn a new hobby too! Visit the Maker Studio to use cool gadgets like the 3D printer, heat press, poster maker, sewing machine and more to bring your visions to life.
