Meet Astronaut Nicole Stott
Women of Tomorrow, p 3
1
March is Women’s History Month, and one of the ways we are celebrating here at the Library is with an event featuring some of the influential women of Stark County. It is so important for the young women in our community to have strong women who they can look up to. My daughter, Victoria, is eleven years old, and I know already that she will positively impact this world. Recently, Christy Williams, one of our panelists, came to speak at Vicki’s Girl Scout Troop, and she talked about Christy for weeks. I am so glad that we have so many successful and influential women in our community who can be role models for Vicki – and all of our young women – and inspire them as they grow. Speaking of role models – did you know that 35% of all NASA astronauts are women? In April, we welcome Nicole Stott to our Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books author series. Nicole is a 28-year NASA veteran and was the tenth woman to walk in space! I think you’ll love hearing her talk about her career as an astronaut and how it influenced what she’s doing today. Library Journal once again recognized Stark Library as a Star Library for the seventh year in a row! Star Libraries are the best of the best in the United States, and I am proud of how our staff serves our community with excellence. April 3-9 is National Library Week. I invite you to visit your neighborhood library or come downtown to Main Library. If you haven’t been to the Library recently, you may be surprised at the variety of materials and programs we offer. We are so glad to have in-person programs at the Library once again! Be sure to check out our website for a list of all upcoming programs and events. See you at the Library!

BACK TO Nicole Stott is a veteran NASA Astronaut, aquanaut, artist, mom, earthling, and now the author of her first book, Back to Earth: What Life In Space Taught Me About Our Home Planet - And Our Mission To Protect It. Nicole has a unique perspective on planet Earth. While most of us have only seen Earth from, well, Earth, Stott has seen it firsthand from outer space – from the International Space Station (ISS) and the Space Shuttle. This perspective has given her a poignant viewpoint about the fragility of our planet. In her book, she represents Earth as a spaceship and us as the crew of Spaceship Earth. Stott urges us all to embark on a new mission: Protecting our one (and only) home – planet Earth. On this mission, she encourages us all, as “crewmates” of Spaceship Earth, to work together to keep our planet’s life support system running smoothly.

While on the International Space Station, Nicole brought science and art together; she was the first person to paint with watercolors in space! Her beautiful artwork is her personal interpretation and expression of the view of Earth that she experienced during her spaceflight missions. Nicole’s foundation, Space for Art, focuses on the awe and wonder of space exploration and the healing power of art.

We challenge you to read 1000 books with your child before they start Kindergarten. If you read just three stories each day, you’ll reach your goal in about a year.

Your Library When you walk into one of our Re|imagined library branches, you’ll know you are in Stark Library. The bright colors, open spaces, and friendly staff are all hallmarks of our system. However, each branch has features as unique as the community it serves. Our newly remodeled Madge Youtz branch is a perfect example. The beautiful mural in the children’s section was created just for this branch by June Kucalaba, our resident artist, using Cook’s Lagoon as her inspiration. Stop by Madge Youtz and take a look for yourself. Our Perry Sippo branch is next to be Re|imagined this summer.
