Kick off the Summer Reading Challenge!
FROM THE DIRECTOR
Slide into Summer Summer is just around the corner, and it’s one of the busiest times of the year here at the library. Kids are out of school, parents are going out of their minds, and the library continues to be out of this world! Did you know that students can lose up to a month of academic learning during summer break? But who wants to think about school during the summer? Reading just six books during the summer can keep your child on track—and the Summer Reading Challenge is a great place to start! Last year more than 6,000 kids participated, and they read for a total of 160,000 days! Our theme for Summer Reading is A Universe of Stories—but that isn’t all that’s going on at the library this summer! We have hundreds of activities, programs, and events to keep your kids active and engaged while school is out. Take a few minutes to read through this guide and explore all we have to offer for you and your family this summer. Check out our Space-themed events. Launch your kids into a new interest by attending Lego Clubs, Chess Clubs, or Maker Events. Discuss a new book at one of our many book clubs—enjoyed by children of all ages. If all else fails, go to one of our BikeSmart hubs, borrow a bike (free with your library card) and head down the trails. There is something for everyone this summer at the Library!

A Healthier Stark with
Be sure to say hi to Maynard if you see him out on the trails!
We’re excited to ride in to our fifth season of Stark County’s award-winning bike share network, BikeSmart. Biking is part of a happy, healthy life style with benefits including stronger bones, lower stress and anxiety issues and better cardiovascular fitness. Whether you love exploring the trails of Stark County, are trying to live a more active lifestyle, or need to run some errands, it’s easy to get where you need to go. The Library, Stark Parks, SARTA and Canton Parks and Rec have partnered on the program to connect you with almost every corner of Stark County. You can check out a bike and explore over 110 miles of beautiful, easy-to-navigate trails with Stark Parks, take a relaxing ride with the scenic Canton Garden Center as a backdrop, or take your adventure even further with our latest partner—SARTA. With 34 fixed routes throughout Stark County and two easy-to-use bike racks on each bus, this partnership is perfect for your first and last mile. Come to SARTA Travel Training to learn about all of the services offered by SARTA, and earn a free 31-day bus pass after taking the class. Please register at StarkLibrary.org. The class will be held Monday June 17, Thursday July 18, and Monday August 19 from 1–3pm at DeHoff Memorial Branch.
If you need more convincing, here are 5 GREAT reasons to sign up for BikeSmart today: 1. It’s cost effective. It’s free to use with your library card. Yes, FREE! We just can’t say that enough. Visiting from out of town? No problem! You can sign up for a library card and ride free—no need to live in Stark County. 2. Great for occasional riders. Maybe you like biking, but don’t ride regularly or have the space to store a bike—it’s a great way to get the benefits without the commitment. 3. It’s healthy. Biking burns calories, builds more muscle, and just generally makes you feel better. In fact, Stark County has ridden almost 90,000 miles and burned more than 5 million calories with BikeSmart. 4. It’s green. Each BikeSmart ride reduces emissions in Stark County. 5. It’s easy to use! Just sign up and ride. Seriously, it only takes a minute to reap big benefits. If you want to check out a bike for a quick ride on the trail, a trip to the farmer's market, or just to zip around town, stop into your local library branch before your first ride to set up your account.
