10 Get Reading Suggestions
We love to talk about how libraries are always changing to meet the needs of the community, and the past year has given us the opportunity to show it. When the pandemic hit, our world changed overnight. Things we just took for granted were gone and we were left to figure out how to navigate a “new normal” in a world that didn’t quite make sense anymore. We wondered how to best serve our community during these unusual times. While it has been a challenge, it has also been an opportunity for us to grow. To think outside of the box. To challenge ourselves to think beyond our four walls. We had to be flexible, find creative solutions, and pivot quickly. Thankfully, our library is staffed with very creative and imaginative people, so we did just that.
13 Find a Job
As we re-opened our buildings last summer, we began alternative ways to offer library services. When you couldn’t come to us, we came to you— through Library-to-Go services, the digital library, and virtual programs! Our digital materials usage—eBooks, eMagazines, eAudiobooks—exploded. Our bookmobiles visited at community stops. We were so grateful to be able to continue to connect with the community in new and exciting ways. I see the light at the end of the tunnel and am filled with hope for the future. We hope to begin in-person events in the coming months. As you walk back into the library and familiar surroundings, there are a lot of changes, but one thing stays the same—everyone at Stark Library will be excited to see you!

is Underway! We have an exciting update to share with you—we officially kicked off our Re|imagine project in February! Construction is underway at North Branch and on target for a mid-summer re-opening. We can’t wait to see the results!
What can I expect? We want your library to be a place you want to spend your day. In addition to some cosmetic upgrades such as fresh paint and new carpet, you can look forward to more charging options for your devices, flexible meeting spaces, and comfortable furniture. Of course, these are just a few of the exciting upgrades you can look forward to. If you want a sneak peek at what to expect, stop by our new Jackson Community Branch at North Park to see how we Re|imagined it for the 21st century. Jackson is home to technology and features we plan to roll out systemwide including user-friendly self-checks, dedicated children and teen areas, and study rooms—perfect for school, tutoring, and even small business meetings!
What’s Next? East Canton is our next branch to undergo updates and is slated to begin on June 14. Madge Youtz Branch will follow on August 16. During Phase 2 of Re|imagine, in 2022, Perry, DeHoff Memorial, and Lake Community branches will undergo renovation.
What do I do While my Branch is Closed? Each branch will take several months to complete (depending on the size and complexity), but don’t worry, we would never leave you hanging! Alternate services will be available while each branch is being upgraded—the Bookmobile will visit each location regularly. You can also access our Library-to-Go Services and our Online Library!

Burning Out

A regular school year is hard enough, but this last one has felt like a lifetime for students, teachers, and parents. I’m sure your battleworn kids have taken every opportunity to remind you that summer is FINALLY here. And they deserve it!
The COVID Slide
We’ve asked a lot of our children in the past year—to stay home, avoid friends, wash their hands, wear masks, to change the way they lived and learned—and these changes impacted every aspect of their lives. We’ve asked them to adapt to virtual and hybrid classrooms, and it has come at a cost: learning loss.
Stay Active and Learn
Normally, we see some learning loss during the summer because students tend to read less and have fewer quality learning experiences. We call this the summer slide. Children have the potential to lose some of the progress made in the previous school year, and they start the next school year behind. We combat this with summer reading and summer learning programs.
This year, research is showing that students are experiencing a COVID-19 slide resulting in learning loss similar to the summer slide. Well, we have our work cut out for us! Now more than ever, we need to engage students of all ages to help them succeed in school. Luckily, it’s easier than you think with the Library!
We encourage you to step away from your screen and work your way through the activities on our Summer Challenge list. Visit your local park and spend time reading a fun picture book at our StoryWalks®. Complete the Summer Challenge Scavenger Hunt by visiting participating businesses or parks in your area. Download an audiobook, hide your device in a pocket, and listen to it while you walk or run outside.

Make Learning Fun This Summer! We’ve all spent way too much time staring into the black mirror this past year. Step away from the device and get outside! You are your child’s first, and best, teacher. Every time you sing, play, rhyme, and read you’re building literacy skills, making learning fun, encouraging creativity, and sparking curiosity. Here are more ways to help them learn, have fun, and get ready for school with the Library.

School
With the support of the Sisters of Charity Foundation, and through a collaboration with Canton City School District, we are bringing summer reading and learning to the Canton community. Using the Reimagining School Readiness framework (designed by the Bay Area Discovery Museum), our Bookmobile will visit locations in Canton to bring summer learning to our children and families. FREE Summer Activity Kits Kids in Kindergarten through 3rd grades will receive kits each week that include books and activities designed to build reading, math, and science skills.
Read to a pet Tune in on Thursdays for a weekly Storytime

Kids shouldn’t go hungry! It’s hard to learn on an empty stomach. When school ends, don’t worry about where your child’s next meal is coming from. FREE Grab-and-Go meals from the Children’s Hunger Alliance are also available at these Canton locations.
