Having survived my first Ohio winter, I am more grateful than ever that we offer snow much to do here at the library! Whether you want to stay in the house and cozy up with a book (that’s my choice), venture to a museum, or make some gifts for the holidays, let us help you make this the best winter ever!
IN THIS ISSUE
This winter, we’re focusing on being together, and what better way than creating together? We recently celebrated the opening of our new Maker Studio at Main Library. This is a perfect opportunity for you to try your hand at something new— and maybe check some things off your holiday gift-giving list! Use the mat cutter to help frame a picture for your mom, transfer a picture to a t-shirt or reusable bag using the heat press, or even cut vinyl to make holiday décor for your walls! Check the listings on the next pages to see some of the many classes we have to offer— or make an appointment to have some one-on-one time with one of our trainers to learn how to use any of the pieces of equipment in the Maker Studio.
Library Coloring Books............ 4
The first two authors in this season’s Dr. Audrey Lavin’s Speaking of Books series were fantastic— Elizabeth Vargas brought in the biggest crowd yet! In February, Cleveland News Icon, Romona Robinson, will be discussing her two books, A Dirt Road to Somewhere and Your Voice Is Your Power (page 6). There’s a flurry of activity at Stark Library this winter! I invite you to explore our program guide to see all that we have to offer.

Best . Winter. Ever. When you think of winter, you think of the holidays, snow days, sledding, cocoa with marshmallows, family moments, and the Library. Wait, the Library?! Yes! After the flurry of the holidays passes, winter can seem unending. That’s where we come in. There’s no shortage of things to do at the Library—whether you prefer to stay in and cozy up or have cabin fever and are itching to explore—we can help you and your family make this a season to remember.

“All I Had Was
a Dream” An Emmy award-winning anchor's incredible journey of faith over fear by Nolan Pastore
E ach e v ening at 6 o’clock , 6-year-old Romona Robinson would sit with her mother to watch Walter Cronkite’s evening news broadcast. She declared that she would one day be a news anchor just like Cronkite and even interview the president. The odds were stacked against her. Robinson was raised in a small town in rural Missouri. She was one of 11 children. Her mother was a single factory worker struggling to make ends meet. “All I had was a dream, and nothing was going to get in my way,” Robinson told me during a recent phone interview.
“My mother always told me that the only way to break the cycle of poverty is to get an education,” Robinson said. Determined to follow her mother’s advice, Robinson worked her way through college, taking the night shift at a country music station. After graduating from Lincoln University with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism, she landed her first job at a television station. Her successful television broadcast career would go on to span more than three decades. Landing in Cleveland, Ohio, in the late 1980s, Robinson set new standards in
About the Author You may have noticed that we have shaken things up with a special guest author for this article. Romona is a huge supporter of kids making an impact in their communities and her segment Romona’s Kids showcases this ideal. As a library, we want to do the same. That’s why we thought “who better to interview the Cleveland News icon than the talented junior reporter Nolan Pastore?” Nolan’s only 13, but he’s already a news veteran and making an impact right here in Stark County. He’s starting his 3rd term with Scholastic Kids Press, an award-winning group of talented Kid Reporters from around the world covering “news for kids, by kids.” Of 50 reporters world-wide, he’s the only Ohio representative. He’s not only a regular at library events, but has covered some pretty impressive guest authors including Eric Litwin and astronaut Mike Massimino for Scholastic Kids Press. Nolan firmly believes that “avid readers make great writers.” We couldn’t agree more.

journalism. She became the first African American woman to anchor an evening broadcast in the city. Robinson was also the first solo anchor of a weeknight broadcast in Cleveland. Over the years, Robinson repor ted thousands of stories, but her favorite spots were those involving children doing great things. “We always hear the negative, but there are so many positive things kids are doing,” she said. In 1990, Robinson introduced a regular segment known as “Romona’s Kids” to spotlight the contributions of young people in the community. “It is so important to encourage children to realize their full potential,” Robinson said.
In 2008, Robinson was honored with Kent State University’s Diversity in Media Distinguished Leadership Award. The YWCA of Greater Cleveland presented her with the 2011 Woman of Achievement Award. She also received the 2014 Edward R. Murrow Award, with co-anchor Denise Dufala, for their breaking news coverage of the Ariel Castro kidnappings in Cleveland.
TeensCREATE is a regular get-together just for teens where you call the shots. Mess around with a CREATEcrate, join a graphic novel book club, get crafty, play video games, or just meet friends and hang out. Ask your Teen librarian for a list of events at your branch, or visit StarkLibrary.org/TeensCREATE
In 2018, Robinson stepped away from the television camera to further pursue her dreams as an author and motivational speaker. Having overcome many personal and professional challenges, she writes from the heart about putting faith over fear in A Dirt Road to Somewhere and Your Voice Is Your Power.
One of the highlights of her career was her 2011 one-on-one interview with President Barack Obama at the White House. “What an amazing opportunity it was to speak with the president,” Robinson said. Robinson was inducted into the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame. She is an eight-time recipient of the Lower Great Lakes Emmy Award.
My mother always told me that the only way to break the cycle of poverty is to get an education. —Romona Robinson

It’s a big project, and we are excited to share the latest updates on what we call our Re|imagine Stark Library project. We have a big vision and we want to share it with you. For a preview, look no further than the Jackson Township Branch coming to life in the North Park complex in Jackson Township. The new space has dedicated children and teen areas with room for tutoring and interactive play, large meeting spaces and flexible rooms to accommodate groups of all sizes, and implements your favorite features from the incubator space. It’s more than a fresh coat of paint, it’s a whole new way of thinking. Systemwide plans include new computers, paint and carpet, study rooms, better access to power for devices, new furniture, and better lighting, as well as other technology updates. We are excited to see our vision brought to life at the new branch and look forward to Re|imagining all our spaces. We can’t wait to see what else 2020 has in store!
