1000 Books Before Kindergarten............ 6
Over the last six months I’ve spent time with many of you—in our branches, in community meetings and events, and just out and about—discussing the impact of the library on your lives, learning the needs of our community, and discovering ways the library can better meet those needs.
Listen at the Library............. 7
I’m very proud that this year we were once again recognized as a Star Library by the Library Journal. This puts us in the top 1% of all libraries across the United States! The true stars here are our staff, who provide exemplary service for our patrons every day. We’ll be highlighting our branches during National Library Week in April—watch our Facebook and YouTube channels for close encounters with our library staff! We’ve started the process of creating a three-year strategic plan for Stark Library. Our goal is simple: To be the best we can be and to serve our community with excellence. We have held several community and staff events to engage both the people who serve as well as the people we serve to gather input as we create our vision and mission. More about that in the next issue of our publication. Exciting things are happening at Stark Library. We are expanding the program 1,000 Books before Kindergarten throughout our entire system, with the goal that every child in our community is ready to read when they arrive at school. The Stark Mini Maker Faire is a celebration of invention, creativity, and curiosity where people of all ages gather to learn, share, play, and make. And don’t forget—you can meet an astronaut at our upcoming Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series. And that’s not all! I invite you to explore this magazine to see the great things that we have to offer our community.

Stark Mini Maker Faire........................ 12
Step into the Final Frontier with Mike Massimino, Astronaut, Author, and All-Around Awesome Guy Even before Mike Massimino watched the moon landing on TV as a child, he knew that he wanted to be an astronaut. It was an ironic career choice for a kid from Long Island with bad eyesight and a fear of heights, but, despite the odds, his love of math and science led him to engineering and—eventually—space. It wasn’t an easy trek. Even though he graduated from Columbia and (eventually) received his doctorate from MIT, he was still rejected by NASA three times. He overcame each roadblock and went on to serve as a NASA astronaut for almost 20 years, logging more than 570 hours in space, including 30 hours of spacewalks! "I was six years old when I watched Neil Armstrong take the first steps on the moon. The next day I asked my mom to take me to the Franklin Square Public Library around the corner from my house to take out every book I could find on spaceflight.
LiBraries have always Been places for me to go to explore, study, and learn. They opened the world to me and provided the foundation for me to fulfill my dream of Becoming an astronaut and flying in space.” You may also recognize him from his recurring appearances on the hit show The Big Bang Theory, where he plays himself. He made his own “big bang” by being the first person to Tweet from Space:
In 2017 he received the Christopher Award, the Columbia University Community Impact Outstanding Community Service Award, and the Communications Award of the National Space Club. As a “down to earth” guy, he’s a professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia and an advisor at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum. And now he’s a New York Times bestselling author. In his book, Spaceman: An Astronaut’s Unlikely Journey to Unlock the Secrets of the Universe, he shares his disappointments and triumphs during his attempts to gain admission into NASA, his first spacewalks, the loss of his fellow astronauts in the Columbia disaster, his decision not to return to space, and his support of future space travel ventures. This is your opportunity to meet an astronaut at the Canton Palace Theatre on April 2. It is going to be out of this world!

Reach for the Stars with
1,000 Books before Kindergarten The Results are Out of this World!
One small step can set your child up for a lifetime of opportunity. Kids who make reading a habit early are more successful in school. That’s why we’re launching a new literacy initiative—1,000 Books before Kindergarten. The program is pretty self explanatory—early learners are challenged to have 1,000 books read, or read to them, before starting Kindergarten. You are your child’s first teacher and your mission is to set them up for success by talking, singing, playing, and most importantly, reading together. This will put them light-years ahead of their peers.
What happens between birth and age 5 impacts a child the rest of their life. If you can do only one thing to help your child get ready for school, it should be reading.
flight and encouraged him to be more outgoing. While Zeke has always been imaginative, he takes it to a new level by incorporating characters and stories in his play time. Zeke's parents hope his little brother Jack will be as eager to participate in the program. “We have been fortunate to be raised in families where reading was always a part of our lives. It was never forced on us, but books, magazines, and newspapers were just something our parents and grandparents read, so we followed their example.” Help your child reach for the stars with FREE literacy programs at StarkLibrary.org/StartSmart

Your Community Library When Andrew Carnegie gave Stark Library (then, Canton Public Library) the money to build a new library building in the early 1900s, he did so with one stipulation: Over the door the words Open to All would be imprinted. Many things have changed in the past century, but one thing will never change. All are welcome at Stark Library.
Stark Library touches lives within our walls and in our community People borrowed (and returned) almost 4,000,000 items
150,000 people attended library programs at 8,000 free events
Our bookmobile made more than 3,300 stops, visiting more than 100 schools and preschools every month
16,000 people received expert assistance from our library staff for job and technical assistance
6,250 kids read for a total of 165,000 days in our Summer Reading program
Readers downloaded more than 425,000 Free eBooks
Our mobile services made 1,250 visits to homebound individuals, delivering library materials
People used our free computers to access information— almost 200,000 sessions
Our SPARK program touched the lives of hundreds of children and their families

In May, a levy will be on the ballot that will increase the current Stark Library levy by about three cents per $100 assessed property value. For a family with a $100,000 home this would mean an additional $26.50 per year—or about the price of one new book.
Pu bli c
Li b
More than half of the Library’s funding comes from the current property tax levy, which expires at the end of 2019. The remaining funds come from the State of Ohio’s Public Library Fund, which has declined 17% over the last decade—with inflation, this equals a $2.87 Million decrease. Funds from the levy will help bridge that gap.

A better Library for just the price of a new book.
If the levy passes:
If the levy fails:
• More children will be ready for school with our early literacy programs • More people can receive job and career assistance from our expert staff • More books, ebooks, and materials • Updated technology for expanded access • Aging buildings will have much-needed repair and maintenance • Stark Library spaces can be re-imagined for the needs of the 21st Century
• Stark Library will lose more than half of its funding • Fewer children and families will benefit from Stark Library’s literacy program • Programs and services—including outreach and job assistance programs—will be cut • Required building maintenance and repairs will not be done • Reduction in library hours
STRONG LIBRARIES = STRONG COMMUNITIES Libraries are a cornerstone of democracy—where information is free and equally available to everyone. — Carla Hayden, 14th Librarian of Congress
