DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Y
our library is More Than Books. It is a place where people and ideas come together to build a great Stark County. We helped launch the new picture book Twice as Good, about William Powell the only African American to design, own and operate a golf course in the United States. His golf course, Clearview, holds a significant place in the history of the Professional Golfers Association and our home town. Kicking off Black History Month in February, we welcomed author Richard Michelson and illustrator Eric Velasquez to Canton. Twice as Good tells the story of one man overcoming obstacles, beating the odds and achieving something important.
Tena Wilson Executive Director
Our community came together over this book. Events supporting Twice as Good were held at Walsh University, the Canton Museum of Art and East Canton Elementary School. Canton City Schools’ Allen School kids visited Walsh University and readers from Belden School helped us present the book at the library. This amazing event is a great example of how libraries inspire us, bring us together as a community and enrich our lives. Another community-building event of 2012 was “Stomp at the Library” with Elec Simon. Elec brings his brand of percussion and community building to events throughout Canton. We were lucky enough to host him, some of his musician friends and a big group of Stark Countians one hot July afternoon in the Main Library parking lot. Elec’s energy and excitement traveled through the crowd as he performed for the finale of Canton City Schools’ Science of Sound Summer Enrichment which was held at the Library. Hundreds of people, young and old, attended this wonderful celebration bringing together education, entertainment and Simon’s own brand of engagement for a fun-filled afternoon. 2012 was a year of transition, as well. I was very pleased to return to Canton as Executive Director of this library system and to take the reins of this important institution.

When I joined the Stark County District Library, it was already in the midst of a crucial levy campaign to secure its funding through the remainder of this decade. Due to a series of budget reductions from the State of Ohio, the Library needed to request an increase in local support. The electorate of this county responded and voted for our levy. We thank you all for your support. We take our responsibility to you very seriously. Your library responsib is a place where the community comes together; it levels co the playing field by providing access to information to everyone. Your Yo library is More Than Books. Stop in and experience this vibrant center of your neighborhood.

The Stark County District Library Foundation raises funds to ďŹ nancially support and advance the mission and values of the library. The Foundation has received donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses which have been used to support library programming and to build an endowment fund. In 2012, the Library Foundation hosted Tap Into Literacy, a craft brew tasting experience which raised funds for and awareness of the Library Foundation’s mission. In December 2012, the Foundation donated nearly $10,000 to the Library to purchase pre-loaded eReaders for circulation to Stark County District Library patrons.
