Library Card Services Library Cards

SCDL offers everyone the opportunity to have a free library card. Your library card will provide you with access to all library materials and online services. Each library card holder is responsible for: • All materials borrowed • Not allowing others to use their card • Charges for late, damaged or lost materials • Reporting a lost or stolen card • Cost of replacing lost or damaged card ($1)

To Obtain a Library Card

Patrons age 18 and older must: • Complete a library card application • Provide an acceptable form of identification (Photo ID with current address) Patrons ages 16 and 17 must: • Complete a library card application • Provide a parent/legal guardian’s name • Identification (school ID is preferred) Patrons under age 16 must: • Provide a completed card application • Provide a parent/legal guardian’s signature Educators may obtain a library card

Fines

SCDL does not charge to check out library materials. Due date receipts are given at every checkout. However, if items are not returned or renewed by the due date, overdue fines will accrue. The fine for all materials, unless specifically noted, is 10¢/day/item. Fines for videos, DVDs, SearchOhio and ILL material are 50¢/day/item. Patrons may not check out or renew items if fines, fees or overdue materials exceed $5.00. • 1st Overdue Notice by phone, email or text one (1) week after an item is due. • 2nd Overdue Notice is sent three (3) weeks after the due date. • Four (4) weeks overdue, a bill will be mailed. Customers who have more than $25 in fines or overdue materials may be sent to the library's collection agency once the items reach 2 months overdue. Fines may be paid online or in person. All SCDL locations accept cash, personal checks and major credit cards. Restrictions may apply.

SearchOHIO, Ohiolink and Interlibrary Loan

All Stark County District Library locations provide free Internet access. Filtered and unfiltered Internet access is available. If you wish to temporarily bypass the filtering software you must enter your authorized library barcode and have parental consent if under 16. All SCDL locations provide free WiFi and computers with Internet access and word processing. Printing costs apply.

SearchOhio allows you to access the collections of 19 Ohio public libraries simply and easily using your Stark County District Library card. The SearchOhio portal allows direct, online requesting for residents of Ohio and delivery of books and other library media within a matter of days. ILL is a free service to borrow library materials from other libraries outside the Stark County District Library system.

Director’s Message

his November, the Stark County District Library will be on the ballot with a 1.7 mill levy. We hope we can continue to count on our incredibly supportive community to help us provide services to you. The increased need for new technology, the expansion of online services to the population (such as, filing taxes online, applying for jobs, etc.) and continuing costs just to maintain existing facilities and services make it impossible to keep up with what our community needs while at the same time accommodating continual cuts in state funding. We have worked Karen Miller very hard to minimize impact on the community while adjusting Interim Executive Director, Stark County District Library to smaller and smaller revenue from the state, but we will not be able to continue without further support from you, locally. How does the library support our community? In March 2012: ●● In just one month, nearly 10,000 children attended story time programs. ●● The library provided 24,000 people with access to computers and the Internet. ●● Our 7th Annual Opportunities Job Fair attracted hundreds of people to meet with more than 30 employers. We were pleased to hear back from some of the employers who placed 13 employees as a direct result of this fair. ●● 275 adults attended free computer training classes. ●● Over 300,000 books, movies and other items were loaned to our customers. We believe that the library provides essential services to the community by teaching critical early literacy skills to young children, by supporting education, and by providing access to information and technology. We want our community to succeed! We want to continue to help people find information, locate jobs, and learn new skills. And, with your support, we can continue to provide excellent service to our community.

Travel with Friends: Author Duo The Friends of the Library invite you to join us on our chartered coach to Cleveland to hear Pulitzer Prize winning husband and wife duo of Geraldine Brooks and Tony Horwitz at Playhouse Square on Tuesday, November 13, at 7:30 pm. The latest book by Tony Horwitz is Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid That Sparked the Civil War. Other books by Horwitz include Confederates in the Attic, A Journey Long and Strange and Blue Latitudes. Caleb’s Crossing is the latest book that Geraldine Brooks has written. Her other works include March, Nine Parts of Desire, and Year of Wonders.

The Mayor’s Literacy Commission has selected the autobiographical book That’s Why I’m Here by Chris Spielman for the 2012 One Book, One Community program. Written with co-author Bruce Hooley, the book traces Spielman’s football career, then relates the story of how Spielman and his wife Stefanie faced many challenges during her lengthy battle with breast cancer. The Mayor’s Literacy Commission and co-sponsors Malone University and the Stark County District Library invite you to attend these special events and any of the book discussions.

All Ages: Neil Zurcher has logged more than a million miles on Ohio’s roads over 25 years as a TV travel reporter. He was the original host of the “One Tank Trips” travel report, which aired on Fox 8 Television in Cleveland. Books will be available for purchase and signing. 2012 One book one community The Mayor’s Literacy Commission has selected the autobiographical book That’s Why I’m Here written by co-authors Chris Spielman and Bruce Hooley for the 2012 One Book, One Community program. The book traces Spielman’s football career, then relates the story of how Spielman and his wife Stefanie faced many challenges during her lengthy battle with breast cancer.
