SCDL does not charge to check out library materials. Due date receipts are given at every checkout. However, if items are not returned or renewed by the due date, overdue fines will accrue. Director’s Message Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, Kent Oliver and to petition Executive Director, the government Stark County District Library for a redress of grievances. – Amendment I, United States Constitution Libraries and librarians are great defenders of the First Amendment; we believe that everyone should be able to read what they choose. Banned Books Week is an event recognized annually at SCDL celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Beginning September 25 this year, Banned Books Week displays will highlight the benefits of free and open access to information. The overall impact is drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States. The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings throughout the world. The books include some of the world’s greatest literature. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority
of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and community members to retain the books in the library collections. Banned Books Week is a powerful tool recognized each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature. It draws attention to the dangers that exist when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society. As individuals and parents it is certainly appropriate that we set boundaries for reading for ourselves and our children. What is not appropriate is when individuals set limits for other individuals and parents as we exercise our reading rights. As Supreme Court Justice William Brennan said in the 1989 United States flag burning decision, Texas vs. Johnson, “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.” SCDL values intellectual freedom for our customers—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular. Banned Books Week stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.

MURDER OF A JOURNALIST
The murder of a journalist almost 100 years ago in Canton was big news – nationally. Media magnates such as William Randolph Hearst weighed in on what was known as more than a murder, it was an assassination and the victim was a martyr according to Thomas Crowl in his book Murder of a Journalist: The True Story of the Death of Donald Ring Mellett. Don Mellett, the publisher of the Canton Daily News was gunned down outside of his home July 16, 1926 for his newspaper’s crusading editorials against the corruption flourishing in the city. He was only 35 years old. In the midst of Prohibition and the crime that flourished around it, Canton had become a city rife with purchased politicians and corrupt cops. “Canton had a national reputation as a city wide open for prostitution, narcotics, gambling, and bootlegging and was living up to its ‘Little Chicago’ nickname.” (Murder of a Journalist, Pg 10)

Following in the footsteps of Joseph Pulitzer, a crusading newspaper publisher and founder of the Pulitzer Prizes, Mellett decided that taking on the crime and corruption prevalent in Canton was the way to get people to buy more newspapers and make himself a success. Unfortunately, his strident editorials ran him afoul of local crime bosses and corrupt police. He received multiple death threats in the weeks leading up to his assassination. Yet, he stood fast in his fight to clean up the streets of Canton.
Mellett had been in town less than two years, taking over the helm of the Canton Daily News which was a distant competitor to The Repository when he was killed. He had been editor of his college newspaper the Indiana Student when he attended Indiana University and had worked for several papers before coming to Canton. His experience as a newspaperman set him on course to challenge the status quo in Canton. When he first became editor of the Indiana Student he prophesied his crusading stance in Canton, writing, “Print the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth… Legitimate publicity is the cure for almost all evils.” (Murder of a Journalist, Pg2) Mellett’s crusading resulted in a Pulitzer Prize for the Canton Daily News in 1927, including posthumous recognition for Mellett.

Thomas Crowl, local amateur historian, has taken a look at the Mellett case from his move to Canton to the trials of his murderers. The Mayor’s Literacy Commission has chosen his book as this year’s One Book One Community selection. Events celebrating this book will begin September 29 with a Speak Easy at the Canton Cultural Center and include book discussions with the author at many of the Stark County District Library book groups. Free, hands-on computer classes at your local library The Stark County District Library provides an extensive list of programs and services to aid our community in their search for employment. From its annual Opportunities Job Fair to entrepreneur and home-based business fairs, the library seeks to provide individuals with exposure to opportunities for employment. In addition, the library provides regular programs on job skills such as resume writing and seeking employment on the Internet. Its website includes a Job and Career Center with links to various job search and job skills websites. Finally, the library partners with the Department of Job and Family Services Employment Source for job skills training and programs. For those who feel they need additional computer training to improve their employment opportunities, the library offers a Job Skills Series. The SCDL Job Skills Series is a weekly meeting of individuals who need to gain Microsoft Office 2007 software skills for the today’s job market, school, or personal use. Classes include Microsoft 2007 products such as Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and PowerPoint. These are hands-on, instructor lead classes held at the Main library or branch typically, once a week for 3 to 4 weeks.
