he Early Childhood Resource Center, which houses a specialized early childhood library in collaboration with the Stark County District Library, recently moved to a new location, 1718 Cleveland Ave. NW. In the new facility, exciting new programming has been added to include children and families. Thanks to the generous support of PNC Bank, the Early Childhood Resource Center began programming for children and their families in March 2011. Programs are hands-on and designed to support early learning and development of young children ages birth-8. These theme programs are offered on Tuesdays at 6:45 pm, Thursdays at 10:00 am and the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month at 10:00 am. Each session lasts approximately one hour and includes a take-home activity, storytelling and a performance or other special event. Also plan to explore the new Inspiration Station, an interactive classroom which provides opportunities for individuals or groups to work with young children on age appropriate activities that spark imagination and promote learning. For a current program schedule visit our website, www.ecresourcecenter. org. Registration is required. For more information call 330.491.3272 or stop in.

New Board Members FOL Volunteers set up a special display of used books for sale at the Annual SCDL Black History Celebration.

2010 FOL Accomplishments In this past year, over $23,000.00 was contributed to help the SCDL better serve the community. Some of the purchases included technology equipment, staff training, display units and the relocation and furnishing of the FOL office and gift shop. FOL also contributed to Vote Libraries. The FOL provided many hours of volunteer services, including: supplying the awards and food for the Tri–County Academic Challenge League; providing books to the Books for Babies project, the USO, Walsh Nursing Students’ inner city Health Fair and to an elementary school in Taiwan for its English Library. The FOL participated in the Black History Celebration and assisted with the Youth Poetry Contest. SCDL Strategic Planning is Underway

I

n the fall of 2010, the Stark County District Library began the process of determining the direction of library services for the next three years, 2011-2013. Strategic Plans look at where you are, what you do well and where you want to go. This is the third Strategic Plan for the library. The first task was to survey the community, the library Board of Trustees and our library staff about current library services. Participants were also asked what the goals for future library services should be. Current demographics of our communities, including population, education and economics were evaluated. This research set the stage for the Strategic Planning group, comprised of a broad spectrum of library staff, to determine the objectives and activities to be undertaken over the next three years. The key tasks that the library will carry out during the action portion of this Strategic Plan are: Satisfy Curiosity: Lifelong Learning: and Express Creativity and Stimulate Imagination: Resources will be available for people to explore topics of personal interest and learn throughout their lives. Connect to the Online World: Public Internet Access: The library will provide high-speed access to the digital world with no unnecessary restrictions or fees. Literacy Across the Lifespan: Services and programs will be designed to ensure that children will enter school ready to learn and teens and adults will

have opportunities to improve their skills in order to meet their personal goals and fulfill their responsibilities. Visit a Comfortable Place: Physical and Virtual Spaces: Our libraries will be safe, comfortable and accessible spaces so that individuals may interact with others or find quiet space. Virtual spaces will be open and accessible and support social networking. Make Career Choices: Job and Career Development: The library will provide resources so that people can identify career opportunities that suit their individual strengths and interests. This is a very lofty sounding set of goals. Accomplishing them requires hard work on many small tasks. The library is looking at its buildings to make sure that

they are safe, comfortable and inviting. The library collection is being analyzed to make sure that the right balance of materials is on hand so that people can find the information that they need. Our website and the materials that we make available electronically will also be part of this evaluation. And, programs and services are being evaluated to assure that they fulfill the needs of our communities. One of the best things about libraries has always been the ability to find things that you didn’t know you were looking for. Browsing the shelves or attending programs, you can stumble upon things that open windows to ideas that you never before considered. Though the model of how books and information are delivered is changing, the ability of the library to provide access to them has not. As we look at Satisfying Curiosity and Expressing Creativity, our goal is to continue to provide those windows. Finally, Literacy. Whether it is early literacy programs such as Story Times which help our children start school ready to learn, or technological literacy which helps our adults find work in the changing marketplace, the library is here to help develop the skills people need to excel in today’s world. This Strategic Plan sets forth a set of goals that the library believes are necessary to accomplish both its long-term success and our community’s long-term success. We ask for your support and invite you to take part in our collection and our programs and services improving all of our lives in Stark County.

The library's new Strategic Plan will keep it focused on key services such as early literacy through programs like Story Times (above) and job and career support, through programs like the Opportunities Job Fair (right). In addition, emerging technologies and online support will also be important in the coming years.
