Library Card Services LIBRARY CARDS

SCDL offers everyone the opportunity to have a free library card. Your library card will provide you with access to all library materials and online services. Each library card holder is responsible for: • All materials borrowed • Not allowing others to use their card • Charges for late, damaged or lost materials • Reporting a lost or stolen card • Cost of replacing lost or damaged card ($1)

TO OBTAIN A LIBRARY CARD

Patrons age 18 and older must: • Complete a library card application • Provide an acceptable form of identification (Photo ID with current address) Patrons ages 16 and 17 must: • Complete a library card application • Provide a parent/legal guardian’s name • Identification (school ID is preferred) Patrons under age 16 must: • Provide a completed card application • Provide a parent/legal guardian’s signature Educators may obtain a library card

for educational purposes. Please review the Teacher Loan Procedures brochure for educator privileges. Corporate/Organization library cards are available upon request.

FINES

SCDL does not charge to check out library materials. Due date receipts are given at every checkout. However, if items are not returned or renewed by the due date, overdue fines will accrue. The fine for all materials, unless specifically noted, is 10¢/day/item. Fines for videos, DVDs, SearchOhio and ILL material are 50¢/day/item. Patrons may not check out or renew items if fines, fees or overdue materials exceed $5.00. • 1st Overdue Notice by phone, email or text one (1) week after an item is due. • 2nd Overdue Notice is sent three (3) weeks after the due date. • Four (4) weeks overdue, a bill will be mailed. Customers who have more than $25 in fines or overdue materials may be sent to the library's collection agency once the items reach 2 months overdue. Fines may be paid online or in person. All SCDL locations accept cash, personal checks and major credit cards. Restrictions may apply.

SearchOhio allows you to access the collections of 20 Ohio public libraries simply and easily using your Stark County District Library card. The SearchOhio portal allows direct, online requesting for residents of Ohio and delivery of books and other library media within a matter of days. Director’s Message

hat a great welcome to Stark County by the local voters who passed our levy, Issue 42, this past November 6. Your vote of confidence inspires us to renew our mission TENA WILSON to serve you – Executive Director, Inspiring Ideas, Stark County District Library Enriching Lives, Creating Community. We are very grateful for your support and will work hard to exceed your expectations. However, it seems that not everyone is a library user. The day after the library levy passed, The Repository online asked residents when they had last visited their library. Believe it or not, a significant percentage responded that they had never visited their Stark County library. This prompted me to imagine my life without a library. Imagine your life as a puzzle; some of the pieces fall easily into place; some take a bit of forcing, or they eventually get pushed aside to make room for a piece with a better fit. I expect there are many people who haven’t tried the library because it doesn’t “fit.” I meet many library users who share

stories of bringing their children to the library to use the vast resources and expose them to a world of knowledge. I also hear from some that, as high school approaches and schedules clash, the library visits become less frequent or even stop altogether. From retirees, I hear that, for the first time in a long time, there is time to read, attend programs of interest and meet friends at the library. For those of you who don’t visit, you may be surprised at what your library can offer. If you’re too busy, let your librarians save you some time. Call or go online to our 24-hour library and reserve titles that will improve your work performance or time management; download them directly to your Kindle, Nook or tablet. Ask a librarian to assemble resources to help you build a functional team. Oh, and tell them you’re too busy to remember to return your items on time, so please text or email with reminders about the due date. I once saw a sign that said, “You can live without a library, but who would want to.” I invite you to check out your library – again, or for the first time. You may be surprised to find that it “fits” quite well into your busy life.

FOL Presidents Message We have had a stellar year in 2012. I would like to thank all of our FOL Volunteers who are faithful hard workers. We could not achieve what we do each year without them. This past year we had excellent book sales which brought in the revenue we need to give back to the Library. The FOL enhances the Library experience, Penny Marshall, through things like new furniture, scholarships to staff obtaining MLIS degrees, FOL President fund raising events to further our efforts and our membership, and staff and volunteer appreciation luncheons. Being a member of the Friends of the Library is a rewarding experience particularly if you get involved in what we do. "Books for Babies" is one of our most special programs. We encourage new mothers to read to their children from the time they are born. Our Gift Shop located in the lobby of the Main Library at 715 Market Avenue N is open Monday through Saturday for your shopping needs. Items for readers are unique and mostly thrifty. Remember us when you begin your Christmas shopping this holiday season. Thank you to everyone who voted for the Library Levy Issue 42. You have made a choice that will benefit our entire community for years to come and you are helping the Library lead us all into the future.
