Director’s Message

L

ewis Carroll, author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, noted that “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” For nearly a year SCDL has been determining where the library is going so we can continue on the right road in serving our community. Last fall the library completed the planning phase of SCDL’s third Strategic Plan. This time around the library has based its planning on the Public Library Association’s model. Six roles were identified as being priorities around which to build library services and devote resources. They were: Satisfy Curiosity, Connect to the Online World, Literacy Across the Lifespan, Express Creativity and Stimulate Imagination, Make Career Choices, Visit a Comfortable Place: Physical and Virtual Kent Oliver Spaces. Executive Director, These roles provide a framework to address such critical topics Stark County District Library as important job training programs, literacy programming and expand our reach in the area of technology and social networking. While public libraries are sometimes seen as being all things to all people, our planning will help us focus our resources which are scarcer and more limited than ever. We believe this type of disciplined focus will continue to help us meet the needs of Stark County and allow SCDL to continue to be an award winning library. Our world is always changing and SCDL is evolving with it, remaining essential and relevant in your lives.

We’re on a mission. We need to expand and renovate the Jackson Township Branch Library. Find out more about the project and learn how you can help. Visit us online at:

Library and Mayor’s Literacy Commission Forge Partnership The Stark County District Library and the Mayor’s Literacy Commission (MLC) have formed a partnership to better serve the literacy needs of the citizens of Stark County. Following months of discussion with the MLC Board of Directors, along with a review of the MLC Strategic Planning process, the library and the MLC have entered into a formalized relationship to “advance literacy for an improved quality of life.” Diane Stroud, literacy and events coordinator for the library, has been named to act as liaison to the commission. The MLC will retain its separate 501(c) (3) status, and will continue to operate under the auspices of a volunteer board. “The MLC has worked productively with the library for years. It is wonderful to now have that partnership made even more intentional with this new arrangement,” said Dr. Patricia Long, chair of the MLC. The MLC continues to be housed at the Stark County District Library’s Main Library, 715 Market Ave N, Canton, with volunteer offices and support of GED and adult literacy training.
