Director’s Message

A

nnual events and traditions make up the fabric of our lives. Included with this issue of Stark Scene is programming that highlights two of our traditional SCDL celebrations. Kent Oliver Black History Month Executive Director, Stark events have long been County District Library the focus of SCDL’s February programming. In 2012 our exciting programs and events take this observance to another level. Among those programs is the recognition of a local pioneer in golf and Black History. A new book celebrating William Powell and Clearview Golf Course’s place in history will be released in January. Along with Walsh University, the Canton Museum of Art and Coming Together Stark County SCDL celebrates Mr. Powell’s legacy as we host the author of Twice As Good, Richard Michelson and illustrator

Eric Velasquez for a series of community appearances. And yes, it’s true, during the February 4 event the Main library will be turned into a golf course! Did you know; there are more public libraries than McDonald’s in the U.S.– an estimated 16,604 in 2010 including branches? Another annual event close to our hearts is National Library Week, April 8th through 14th. Library staff has planned programs that will acquaint you with SCDL just a little bit better. Discover the many public services and programs available that you may not have been aware of along with a new branch library or two. In past years our programs surrounding this week may have snuck by you. This year take part and discover why your public library is so important to the lifeblood of our community. Public libraries are not just nice, they are necessary. Celebrate with us during their week!

Twice as Good The Story of William Powell and Clearview

I

n his autobiography, William J. Powell said when he was 12 years old his school principal told him “Billy…you have to realize you can’t do things just as good as a white boy–you have to do them better!” “His words became a very important tool for my life and became the under-pinning for every step I took,” Powell said in his autobiography Clearview: America’s Course…the triumphant story of William J. Powell, the only African American to design, build and operate his own public golf course.

Richard Michelson and illustrator Eric Velasquez have created a picture book entitled Twice as Good which tells the story of a man who fought for his country in World War II, yet was unable to pursue his love of golf when he returned home from the war. In response, Powell went the extra steps to design, build and operate his own golf course. Twice as Good will be released in January 2012, and the author and illustrator will be in Canton February 2 through 4 for a series of events introducing the book and “teeing off” the library’s Black History Month observances.
