FINES

SCDL does not charge to check out library materials. Due date receipts are given at every checkout. However, if items are not returned or renewed by the due date, overdue fines will accrue. The fine for all materials, unless specifically noted, is 10¢/day/item. Fines for videos, DVDs, SearchOhio and ILL material are 50¢/day/item. Patrons may not check out or renew items if fines, fees or overdue materials exceed $5.00. • 1st Overdue Notice by phone, email or text one (1) week after an item is due. • 2nd Overdue Notice is sent three (3) weeks after the due date. • Four (4) weeks overdue, a bill will be mailed. Customers who have more than $25 in fines or overdue materials may be sent to the library's collection agency once the items reach 2 months overdue. Fines may be paid online or in person. SEARCHOHIO, OHIOLINK AND INTERLIBRARY LOAN

SearchOhio allows you to access the collections of 19 Ohio public libraries simply and easily using your Stark County District Library card. The SearchOhio portal allows direct, online requesting for residents of Ohio and delivery of books and other library media within a matter of days. ILL is a free service to borrow library materials from other libraries outside the Stark County District Library system.

Director’s Message

y the time this Executive Director’s Message is released I will have left the Stark County District Library after ten and a half years as its Executive Director. It has KENT OLIVER been a pleasure Executive Director, Stark working with the County District Library Library Board, staff and the community during that time. In June I will begin as the new Library Director for the Nashville (TN) Public Library. The Library Board is in the process of conducting a national search for SCDL’s new Executive Director and has an Interim Director in place for the transition period. During this last decade, SCDL has had some remarkable success in serving the community. We developed exceptional programs and services such as our literacy initiatives, free computer training classes, and job fairs. The new Innovation Center, which opened this spring, makes it possible for entrepreneurs, businesses and not-for-profits to meet in a high tech environment as they advance the mission of their business or organization. SCDL’s Little Theatre Troupe has grown and flourished. All while a number of library branch buildings were added or renovated. The library was honored for its services and out of the box thinking with the National Medal for Museum and Library Service in 2009. This award is a credit to the dedication of the library’s staff for innovative thinking and a commitment

to excellence. It is also recognition of the collaborative spirit SCDL has adopted as it works with partners in the Stark community to develop valuable, essential, and efficient programs. Our list of formal and informal partnerships is simply too long to list. Through much of my tenure here, Ohio’s public libraries, and SCDL, have seen their financial support from the State of Ohio dwindle. As a result, SCDL is reliant upon its local operating levy to support daily operations. The library will seek a renewal and slight increase of its existing levy this fall. The 2012 levy campaign is critical to the library’s future. On one hand, SCDL continues to be recognized for excellent service but on the other hand, our financial resources are fragile and constantly in jeopardy. As I did in November 2001, I continue to believe that public libraries are the most important public service in a democracy. They build and strengthen community. Everyone is welcome to use our free services regardless of their circumstances or walk of life. Each person’s needs are met by library staff, one person at a time. Intellectual freedom, the right of each person to access information in our society, is a core value. Rather than diminishing the role of the public library, the era of rapidly changing information technology actually enhances the need for it. Public libraries have always been about more than books. Libraries are resilient and adapt to change. I firmly believe that the best days for public libraries, and SCDL, are yet to come.

First Fridays with the Friends

Do you attend the Canton First Friday events each month? There is an art, music and activities boom happening in downtown and we're a part of it. Be sure to stop at the FOL Book Sale Building and get a FREE book! We'll be there from 5:30–7:30 pm, May through September 2012. More Than Books

ou may be noticing billboards, radio ads and newspaper ads telling you that your library is More Than Books. When we talk about all the great things your library does, the most common comment we hear is “I didn’t know the library did that; that’s great.” So we decided to toot our own horn: your library is More Than Books. Did you know that in March (the most recent month for which we have data) almost 10,000 young children attended a story time? 25,000 people used our public access computers, 117,000 people visited the library and 45,000 people visited our website.

Not only is the library More Than Books, it is the best value in town. For someone who listens to only one audio book per month, you can save about $500 per year by using your library. In fact, when we compared what your library costs in taxes with what we return in service to the community, we found that for each dollar in revenue that we receive, we give back $5.00 in service. That’s a pretty good value, we think. We may be More Than Books, but don’t worry, we still love them and we pledge to have them for you in whatever format you choose, hardback, paperback, audio book or eBook.

have been a librarian for 30 years. I am now retired but still connected to the library as a Friend of the Library volunteer. When revising my will I was concerned about leaving a legacy for future generations. My love for our public library seemed to be a perfect way to do that. In up and down economics the doors of the Stark County District Library Penny Marshall, library have remained supporter and philanthropist. open, providing free access to information in all its forms to the people of our community. Planned giving is a way to be a supporter of our Library system for years to come. The public library system is such an integral part of who I am, what I’ve accomplished and what I enjoy about the world around me and beyond. There must be hundreds of other people in our community who have had the same experience.
